                  Friday, April 30

Milwaukee won last three games, stunning Hawks in Atlanta in Game 5, rallying from down 8 at end of third quarter to win and set up potential series-ender here. Kurt Thomas took only one shot in 21:17 on floor in last game, but Bucks were +21 when he was on floor, -17 when he was off. Hawks' starting Gs and Crawford combined to go 11-39 from floor in Game 5. Bucks shot 51%+ from floor in both home games in series.

Home side is 5-0 SU in series, with Thunder winning here by 5-21, with Oklahoma City taking 82 FTs, Lakers 40 (FTs at Staples: 85-81 Lakers) in the two games. There was nothing good about Game 5 for Thunder, whose starting Gs shot 5-20, in game they fell behind by 15 after first period and it got worse from there. Anytime Bryant takes fourth-most shots amongst Laker starters, you know they've had a good game. Last three series games went over the total.

Nuggets put squabbling aside in Game 5, stayed alive with 116-102 win in game where Jazz took only 25 foul shots, after averaging 38 in series up to that point. Look for Utah to attack basket at home, where they won previous series games by 12-11 points, shooting 47/53% from the floor. Other than Millsap, Jazz bench was combined 0-10 from floor in Game 5, as Utah depth has been depleted by injuries to Okur/Kirilenko.

Penguins won five of last six games vs Montreal, winning the last three games in this building by combined score of 14-6; Canadiens just ralled from 3-1 deficit to stun #1 seed Washington in seven games, allowing a total of three goals in last three games, despite being outshot 134-66, as goalie Halak has been stellar between pipes. Penguins had extra time to rest but needed it, as last two games in Ottawa series both went to OT.

Atlanta Hawks at Milwaukee Bucks [ESPN | 7:00 PM ET]

Hawks (-2, O/U 190): Atlanta is on the verge of an epic collapse, as they were up 2-0 in their first round series against Milwaukee. The Hawks were a huge favorite in this series, yet they've lost the past 3 games to stare elimination right in their faces. The Hawks will have to learn how to win on the road in a hurry, otherwise they will have an early start to their summer. Atlanta is 55-32 SU and 50-37 ATS overall this season, but their road record isn't nearly as good. The Hawks are 19-24 SU and 22-20-1 ATS away from home this season. Atlanta is also only 2-3 as road favorites of 3 PTS or fewer this season. The Hawks are also only 1-10 ATS this season when playing against a team that beat them previously in Atlanta. The Hawks played well in Milwaukee during the regular season, as they went 2-0 ATS against them. The Hawks have struggled to score over their past 3 games, yet they still have 6 different players averaging double figures in PTS this series. G Joe Johnson is leading the Hawks with 23.2 PPG during the playoffs, along with 6 APG. The Hawks need more scoring help from their bench, which has been nearly nonexistent since the playoffs began.

Hawks are 0-5 ATS last 5 games following a SU loss.
Over is 4-0 last 4 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600.

Key Injuries - F Josh Smith (eye) is probable.

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 98

Bucks: Milwaukee is one win away from a very improbable first round upset. The Bucks showed their fighting spirit, as they came from 9 points down in the final quarter to steal Game 5 in Atlanta. After losing the first two games of this series, the Bucks have won the past 3. The Bucks have been the listed underdog in 4 of the 5 games played thus far, and will again be the listed underdog tonight. Milwaukee has been fighting for respect all year, as critics continue to not believe in this Bucks team. This criticism is part of the reason the Bucks are so successful from an ATS standpoint. The Bucks are 49-38 SU and 55-30-2 ATS overall this season. The Bucks have easily been one of the elite teams ATS this year. Milwaukee is 30-13 SU and 26-16-1 ATS at home this season. The Bucks are also 26-16 ATS as the listed underdog this season. Milwaukee was an unbelievable 27-12 ATS during the 2nd half of the regular season. Milwaukee is 29-19 ATS this season when facing teams that score more than 99 PPG this year. PG Brandon Jennings continues to play beyond his years, as he's leading the Bucks in scoring during the playoffs with 20.8 PPG.

Bucks are 14-4 ATS last 18 games as an underdog.
Over is 6-0 last 6 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.

Key Injuries - C Andrew Bogut (elbow) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 99 (OVER - Total of the Day)

Los Angeles Lakers at Oklahoma City Thunder [ESPN | 9:30 PM ET]

Lakers: Los Angeles is plenty motivated for Game 6 in Oklahoma City, as they want some rest. That rest is much needed, particularly for G Kobe Bryant. Bryant is nursing several injuries, and it's quite obvious that Bryant is far more injured than he's letting on. This Lakers team is a veteran unit, and they know they need to win tonight to ensure some rest. Los Angeles was ultimately successful in Game 5 thanks to their defense and their reliance on getting the ball inside offensively. Bryant is only averaging 21 PPG this series, far below his season scoring numbers. However, Bryant guarded Russell Westbrook and harassed him all over the court. Bryant proved just how valuable he really is, as he was ultimately successful in hindering the Thunder offensive attack. Forward Paul Gasol and Center Andrew Bynum are combining for 33 PPG against the Thunder. The Lakers are 60-27 SU and 35-49-3 ATS overall this season. The Lakers are 23-20 SU and 18-24-1 ATS on the road this season. Los Angeles is a paltry 2-7 ATS as a road underdog of 3 PTS or fewer this season.

Lakers are 0-6 ATS last 6 road games vs. a team with a home winning % greater than .600.
Under is 11-4 last 15 games as a road underdog.

Key Injuries - C D.J. Mbenga (eye) is questionable.
G Sasha Vujacic (ankle) is out.

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 93

Thunder (-1.5, O/U 194.5): Oklahoma City finally played like the young team they are. After tying their series with the Lakers at 2-2, the Thunder were blown out in Los Angeles. The Thunder still have plenty of confidence, as they know they have dominated the Lakers at home in this series. The Thunder are also playing with a nothing to lose mentality, as they know they weren't expected to challenge the Lakers in this series. The Thunder are 3-2 ATS against the Lakers in this series, with one of their losses coming by a half point. Oklahoma City is 52-35 SU and 51-36 ATS overall this season. The Thunder are 29-14 SU and 24-19 ATS at home this season. One of the biggest reasons why the Thunder have been so successful at home this year is because of their electric crowd. The Thunder are 5-3 ATS as a home favorite of 3 PTS or fewer this year this season. Oklahoma City will again look to F Kevin Durant and PG Russell Westbrook to lead them to victory tonight. Westbrook will look to bounce back from a poor performance in Game 5, where he had 8 turnovers while being shadowed by Kobe Bryant.

Thunder are 8-1 ATS last 9 games following a SU loss of more than 10 points.
Over is 4-0 last 4 games as a favorite.

                              Key Injuries - None.

PROJECTED SCORE: 102 (Side of the Day)

                                Len's Top 5

TGIF everyone, here's my Top 5 for April 30, 2010 from Len Berman.

                                1. Quick Hits

Tomorrow is the 136th running of the Kentucky Derby.
Tiger Woods shot a 2 over 74 at Quail Hollow and trails by 9 shots after one round.
San Antonio and Phoenix advance in the NBA playoffs.
The NCAA has approved increasing the field of its basketball tournament from 65 to 68 teams.

                                2. The Color Barrier

When Jackie Robinson blasted trough the color barrier in 1947 it led to a flood of black baseball players. That number has been reduced to a trickle. Last season, 9% of major leaguers were black. That's all, as opposed to 27% Latino. The low point for blacks was 8.2% in 2007. The reason appears obvious. Young blacks would rather play basketball and football. I'm guessing one reason is that they see they can become instant stars in football and especially in basketball. LeBron James jumped from high school to super-stardom. Baseball takes more time to make it as players must mature through the minor leagues. Just speculatin'.

                                3. Post Time

For many sports fans, the Kentucky Derby is the only horse race they'll watch all year. They call it the fastest 2-minutes in sports, although no horse has done it faster than Secretariat who ran it in less than 2-minutes. Anyway, when Secretariat won the Triple Crown in 1973 he broke a 25-year drought dating back to 1948 and Citation. That was considered forever. Until now. The current drought is 32 years since Affirmed. Maybe no horse will win the Triple Crown again, maybe it's just too hard. But after tomorrow only one horse will have a shot this year. And maybe he'll just do it. Wanna bet?

                                4. Friday eMailbag

When I joked that the Mets Jewish rookie didn't have to skip a World Series game this year like Sandy Koufax, because Yom Kippur falls in September, subscriber S.D. emailed, "Ike Davis would be better off attending Temple on Yom Kippur to atone for Minaya and Manuel's sins of putting together a lousy team that will remain in last place."
Editor's Note: Maybe you should check the standings.

As for the possible liaison between George Steinbrenner and Barbara Walters, M.F. has the "inside scoop."
BARBARA: "Oh, George. You're sooo big and strong. Take me, George. Oh yes, yes, yes, YES !!!!
GEORGE: "That's it! that's what I'll call my network."

And subscriber F.W. has my back. He emails "Have you thought about asking your existing readers to recommend your Top 5 to friends and colleagues? Maybe you can ask your readers to give you five e-mail addresses and enter them in a competition for some prize?"

Editor's Note: I think about it all the time. So here goes, send me at least 3 email addresses of friends or colleagues and be eligible to receive free autographed copies of my best selling kids book The Greatest Moments in Sports.

                                5. Spanning The Week

Subscriber Tony T. suggests that we should include video links to great sports highlights. While there are plenty of sites that do that, maybe we will start a Spanning the World highlight of the week. How about his one? In an Argentinian soccer game, two teammates....one ball......Take a look.
Just call it a "Bicycle Built For Two."
Feel free to send along suggestions for this new feature.
