    Daily Sports Roundup: April 30

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The White Sox take on the Yankees, the Penguins host the Canadiens, and the Lakers try to close out their series in OKC.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA playoff schedule for Friday has Denver at Utah, Atlanta at Milwaukee, and the Lakers at Oklahoma City. The Jazz, Bucks, and Lakers all hold 3-2 advantages in those first-round playoff series and will be looking to advance to the second round with wins on Friday. Los Angeles got a leg up in their series with the pesky Thunder on Tuesday night, winning by a final score of 111-87 at home. Kobe Bryant was held to just 13 points for the Lakers in that contest, while Pau Gasol picked up the slack with 25 points. Kevin Durant had a team-high 17 points in the defeat for the Thunder, and Russell Westbrook poured in 15 points.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

In the American League on Friday it'll be Boston at Baltimore, Minnesota at Cleveland, the Angels at Detroit, Oakland at Toronto, Kansas City at Tampa Bay, Texas at Seattle, and the White Sox at the Yankees. Chicago's John Danks (3-0, 1.55 ERA) is scheduled to take on New York's Andy Pettitte (3-0, 1.29 ERA) in that last matchup. Lefthander Danks beat the Mariners in his last trip to the mound, surrendering just two earned runs on seven hits over eight innings of work. Lefthander Pettitte was even better in his last start, holding the Angels to just one run on six hits over eight innings of work while striking out eight batters.

Meanwhile, the National League on Friday offers up Arizona at the Cubs, the Mets at Philadelphia, Washington at Florida, Houston at Atlanta, Cincinnati at St. Louis, Milwaukee at San Diego, Pittsburgh at the Dodgers, and Colorado at San Francisco. The Rockies will send Aaron Cook (1-2, 5.01 ERA) to the hill, while the Giants will go with Barry Zito (3-0, 1.32 ERA). Righthander Cook broke into the win column in his last trip to the mound, holding the Marlins to one run on five hits over nine innings of work. Lefthander Zito dominated the Cardinals in his last outing, tossing eight shutout innings while giving up three hits and striking out 10.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the defending-champion Pittsburgh Penguins begin their second-round NHL playoff series on Friday at home against the Montreal Canadiens. The Penguins knocked out the Senators in six games in the opening round, storming back from a 3-0 deficit to pick up a 4-3 road win in overtime in the clincher. Pascal Dupuis had the winner in that extra frame. The Canadiens bounced the top-seeded Capitals in the first round of the playoffs, winning Game 7 by a 2-1 score on the road on Wednesday. Marc-Andre Bergeron and Dominic Moore had the goals for Montreal in that game, and Jaroslav Halak stopped 41 of 42 shots.

Bettors' best friend: Friday's wagering tips

      Line off the board

The total for the Diamondbacks-Cubs game is being withheld pending wind speed and direction.

Lines to keep an eye on

Hawks opened as 1-point favorites over the Bucks but that figure has doubled to 2.

Jazz came out as a 3.5-point favorites over the Nuggets but that number has climbed to 4.5. The total fell from 218 to 217.5.

      Weather to watch

The forecast calls for an 80 percent chance of thunderstorms at Churchill Downs on Saturday (Mudders' Day comes early in the Kentucky Derby).

The wind for the Diamondbacks-Cubs matinee should be howling out of Wrigley Field to left-center at 22 mph (further proof that left field sucks).

The Nationals-Marlins contest calls for a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms (the forecast for all Marlins' home games through September).

      Who's hot

Over is 7-0-1 in Bucks' last eight home games.

Canadiens have won three straight and yielded 7.65 units.

Mets have won seven in a row and nine of their last 10.

      Who's not

Nuggets are 1-8-1 ATS in last 10 road games.

Canadiens are 1-5 in last six against Penguins.

Braves have lost nine in a row.

      Key stat

38.9 - Lakers' All-Star Kobe Bryant's shooting percentage in the 2010 playoffs, the lowest since his 1997 rookie year of 38.2. Those are the only two postseasons in which he shot less than 40 percent from the field, including percentages of 45.7, 47.9, 46.2 and 49.7 in his last four playoffs.

      Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Denver Nuggets forward Nene is out for Game 6 with a knee injury after getting tangled up with Utah's Carlos Boozer in Game 5. More bad news for the Nuggets, who face elimination and a huge home-court advantage. Nene was averaging 14 points and 7 rebounds in the first four games of the series, but more importantly he gave Denver an inside presence against Boozer.

      Game of the day

      Lakers at Thunder (-1.5, 194.5)

      Notable quotable

"I'm not going to the range today. To hell with it."

-- Tiger Woods said following his opening round of 2-over-par 74 at the Quail Hollow Championship on Thursday.

      Tips and notes

With heavy rain in the forecast for the Kentucky Derby it's a good time to look at the mudders in the field. The Wet Tomlinson Rating judges horses' performances in the slop and only two of the 20 entries have WTR scores over 400 - 12-to-1 Noble's Promise (468) and 15-to-1 Super Saver (412), which broke his maiden in his second race by seven lengths on a soupy surface. Coincidentally, 3-to-1 favorite Lookin at Lucky has the third-highest WTR in the field at 392.

Help is on the way for the struggling Phillies' bullpen with word that closer Brad Lidge will rejoin the team in time for this weekend's series against the Mets, who have overtaken Philly for first in the NL East. The Mets have won nine of their last 10 but all came at home. They're a poor road team (2-4 this season and 16-38 in their last 54) while the Phils are home for the first time in 10 games. A hungry home crowd and a healthy Lidge should give Philly a mental lift.

The red-hot Rays took a league-best 16-5 mark into Thursday night's game against the Royals and they love to put up big numbers for tonight's starter Jeff Niemann. Talk about run support, the Rays' offense has produced at least eight runs in each of the right-hander's last three starts. Throw in the fact that Niemann beat the Royals twice last year, giving up just one run over 17 innings, and this could be a Royal beating.

        Friday six-pack

Top six payrolls in major league baseball.........

        6) Mets $126,498,096-- Santana makes $20.15M, Beltran $19.4M

        5) Detroit $133,895,400-- Cabrera makes $20M, Ordonez $17.8M

        4) Phillies $138,178,379-- Howard's new deal not counted in this.

        3) Cubs $144,359,000-- Soriano makes $19M, Zambrano $18.9M.

        2) Boston $168,109,833-- Lackey makes $18.7M, Drew $14M.

        1) Bronx $213,359,389-- Left side of IF makes $55.6M. Two guys.

        ***************************************

Friday's List of 13: Random thoughts on last day of April........

        13) There were only 28 new head coaches in college basketball this year; so far this offseason, there are 45, with four openings left to be filled, and if Rutgers hires Mike Rice Jr or another current head coach, that'll make an even 50 for next season.

        12) Jake Peavy is 0-2, 7.85 in five starts; he says he's healthy, but he has bad mechanics. He's put 32 men on base in his last 18 IP.

        11) Rich Harden threw 87 pitches for Texas Wednesday, only got one swing and miss, while throwing 41 balls, 46 strikes; that said, White Sox couldn't get a run off him until the sixth inning.

        10) St John's sold 110 season ticket packages in the first five days after Steve Lavin was named head coach. Criticisms of Lavin at UCLA never related to off-court stuff; it was more like they wished he coached as well as he recruited. Seems like a good guy; interesting to see how he does.

        9) Also want to wish good luck to Mitch Buonaguro at Siena and Glenn Braica at St Francis NY, recently named to their new positions; have had the chance to meet both guys-- Buonaguro has to maintain the success at Siena, Braica has to break losing mold in Brooklyn. Both are terrific guys and we wish them well.

        8) Two interesting non-conference football matchups that caught my eye as I was starting to plan a Las Vegas trip for September; UCLA-Texas is being played September 25, Clemson-Auburn the week before. Clemson has had five head football coaches who were Alabama graduates.

        7) If I ran an NFL Draft, I'd care a hell of a lot more about game film than I would about postseason workouts. Can the guy play??????

        6) Did you know that Indiana, PA claims to be the Christmas tree capitol of the world? Its also the next town over from Punxatawney, PA, where the ground hog stays famous depsite working one day a year.

        5) Trevor Hoffman allowed two home runs, 11 runs all of last year. So far in 2010, he's allowed six homers and 13 runs. In one month.

        4) Bronx Bombers have highest payroll in baseball ($213,359,389); teams with lowest payrolls are Pirates ($39,068,000) and Padres ($37,799,300).

        3) 23 games into season, A's already have eight guys on DL, with Suzuki and Duchscherer likely headed there, too. Very frustrating.

        2) Padres had eight straight hits in fifth inning Thursday; their first 13 hits were all singles, as the Brewers lost yet another game, 9-0 at Petco.

        1) The record for most new college hoop head coaches in one offseason is 60, back in '07, when Tubby Smith went to Minnesota, Billy Gillispie replaced him at Kentucky, Mark Turgeon went to Texas A&M, Gregg Marshall replaced Turgeon at Wichita and Randy Peele took over as the Winthrop Eagles' coach. One hiring created five new openings.

Game of the day: Lakers at Thunder
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Lakers at Oklahoma City Thunder (-1.5, 195)

            Not your typical series

Oklahoma City won Games 3 and 4 at home to knot the series up at two games apiece. The Lakers returned to Los Angeles on Tuesday and rocked the Thunder by 24 points to put them within a game of closing out the series. Oklahoma City is 29-14 at home this season (24-19 ATS) while Los Angeles is 23-20 on the road (18-24-1 ATS).

            Head to head

The Thunder prevented a regular-season sweep by winning the final meeting 91-75 on March 26. That win seemed to give them a sense of confidence against Los Angeles. OKC now needs a win to force a Game 7 on Sunday.

In Tuesday’s Game 5, Oklahoma City recorded just seven fast break points after recording 72 in the first four games. The Thunder made it to the line 24 times (making 18) in Game 5 after 80 free throw attempts in Game 3 and 4 alone.

The home team is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings and the favorite is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings. Los Angeles is 0-4 ATS in the last four meetings in Oklahoma City.

We’ve seen home-court advantage play a huge role in this series. Will OKC continue its dominance at home or will Los Angeles steal one and close out the series on the road?

            Win or go home

The Lakers made some key adjustments in Game 5 by swapping Kobe Bryant off of Kevin Durant and putting him on Russell Westbrook. It threw off Westbrook and drained less of Bryant’s energy on defense.

Westbrook averaged 21.8 points, 6.5 rebounds and 5.3 assists while making more than 55 percent of his shots in the first four games. But in Game 5 Bryant harassed Westbrook into a 4-for-13 shooting while forcing eight turnovers.

"That's Kobe," Westbrook said. "That's who he is. That's why he's probably the best player in the league."

NBA coach of the year Scott Brooks adjustments have been masterful in this series. He’s done a good job of coming up with schemes to stop Kobe, holding him to 21.8 PPG this series (-5.2 PPG off regular season average). They’ve also held the Lakers to just 95.6 PPG, keeping them under 100 points in four of five games of this series.

The Thunder have done a great job against Bryant at home, holding him to 15 of 39 shooting (38 percent) and 36 points.

Sometimes wins can’t be assessed with stats. In all the games this series, the home crowd has certainly made a bigger difference than stats can analyze. The electricity at Ford Center overwhelmed the Lakers in Games 3 and 4. And the buzz around Staples Center in Game 5 seemed to lift the Lakers to a blowout victory.

            L.A. story

Ask Los Angeles coach Phil Jackson what the key to winning Game 5 against the Thunder and he’ll give you a rather simple answer.

"It was just raw energy. That's all there it was to it."

The Lakers stormed out to a big lead by going into the paint early and often. Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum combined for 46 points and 22 rebounds.

This isn't a make-or-break game for the Lakers. Should they need it, the seventh and deciding game would take place Sunday at Staples Center. But history appears to be on the Lakers' side; the Purple and Gold are 17-0 after winning Game 5 at home.

Still, the Lakers would surely like to end this series sooner rather than later.

"We don't want to try to stretch this out," Lakers forward Pau Gasol said, "and give them another chance."

The extra rest between games seemed to help Jackson's boys quite a bit. The Lakers looked old and slow in Game 4 but with a couple of days off, they bounced back to get a blowout victory in Game 5. Once again, they get a couple of days off to prepare for Game 6.

"I think it helped all of us, not just from a physical standpoint, but more so even just from a strategic standpoint of really gaining an understanding of the things that happened the first three or four games and what we could do going into the fifth game that could work well for us as a group," Derek Fisher said.

Said Bryant: "We know they're going to come back strong, make their own adjustments and come back with their best game in front of their fans, so we've got to improve even more."

Key statistical information - Away/home comparisons

            Points per Game

            Oklahoma City: +3.7 RPG

            Trends

Oklahoma City is 8-1 ATS in its last nine games following a SU loss of more than 10 points and 10-3 ATS in its last 13 games playing on two days' rest.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Hawks at Milwaukee Bucks (+2, 190)

Who would have thought after the first two games in this series that Milwaukee would have a chance to close things out at home in Game 6?

But that’s where we’re at after the Hawks lost at home on Wednesday night, falling for the third straight time in the series.

The way Atlanta lost might be difficult to forget. Milwaukee closed on an 18-5 run to win 91-87.

"This has to be (only) a memory," Hawks super sub Jamal Crawford told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "If you think about this, you'll already be down going into Milwaukee. You have to let it go and come out with a win. It's not over."

The Hawks’ offense has been ugly all season. They play way too much one-on-one and don’t get many easy looks for teammates. That flaw is now being exploited by a team that works its tail off on defense.

Atlanta won’t be able to fix its problems in one game, especially not on the road where they’ve been terrible for the last three seasons.

              Pick: Bucks

Denver Nuggets at Utah Jazz (-4.5, 218)

The Nuggets finally woke up and played a good 48 minutes against the Jazz. But Denver faces another elimination game and this time it’ll be on Utah’s home floor.

You’ve got to wonder if Denver will be able to repeat their shooting performance from Game 5, when it shot over 50 percent from the field and beyond the arc. And the chances of Denver shooting 17 more free throws than the Jazz at Utah can’t be very good.

The Jazz have to feel good about their situation. They rarely lose in their own gym and the Nuggets aren’t having any luck slowing down Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer. Utah’s dynamic duo is averaging 50.8 points so far in the series.

Denver got good news when it found out that starting center Nene knee injury is just a day-to-day thing. Reports say he could return for a Game 7 but that won’t help them any for Friday’s Game 6.

              Pick: Jazz

Montreal Canadiens at Pittsburgh Penguins (-277, 5.5)

Do the Habs have anything left after a heart-stopping, seven-game series against the Capitals? Montreal came back from a 3-1 deficit against the top-seeded Caps despite getting outshot 134-66 over the final three games.

Montreal backers better hope so because the Penguins are rested, ready and experienced. The Canadiens exploited Washington’s weak goaltending, but they shouldn’t find Pens netminder Marc-Andre Theury as easy to solve.

Fleury, who was a rock for the Pens during their Cup runs in the last two seasons, went 3-1 with a 2.12 goals-against average versus the Habs during the regular season.

Sidney Crosby’s line will look a little bit different for Game 1. Coach Dan Bylsma threw Ruslan Fedotenko onto the big line in practice this week because of the injury to Chris Kunitz. Fedotenko was a healthy scratch for most of last series against the Sens.

Expect some carryover for Habs goalie Jaroslav Halak in the first game of the series.

                Pick: Under

Pittsburgh Pirates at Los Angeles Dodgers (-255, 9)

Pittsburgh pitcher Charlie Morton has been consistently bad this season. In four starts, the right-hander has lasted just 13 1/3 innings, allowing 28 hits and 24 earned runs.

A demotion to the minor leagues could be on the horizon for Morton if he doesn't turn it around against what could be a fired-up Dodgers club that was recently called out by general manager Ned Colletti about their poor play, particularly center fielder Matt Kemp.

"Why is it? Because he got a new deal?," Colletti told 790 AM KABC. "Can't tell you. But you know, it's below-average. If this is the last day of the season and people are voting for the Gold Glove, his name is not even on the ballot.

"It's a shame that he would go from where he was a year ago to revert back to when the ball goes up in the air and you're not sure where it's going, or if it's going to get caught."

Kemp, who won a Gold Glove last season, has one error in 47 chances this season for a .979 fielding percentage, a shade below the league average. Fair or not, a teammate getting called out often creates an environment where his teammates rally around him.

It doesn't hurt that L.A. will send Chad Billingsley to the hill. The hard-throwing right-hander is 4-0 lifetime against the Bucs, including a dominating win over them earlier this month.

Expect the Dodgers to snap out of their offensive funk tonight at Chavez Revine.

                  Pick: Dodgers

Arizona Diamondbacks at Chicago Cubs (-165, Off)

While the debate over a new immigration law rages in Arizona, several Diamondbacks are having no problem crossing the border in Chicago - over the ivy walls of Wrigley Field.

Former Braves teammates Adam LaRoche and Kelly Johnson combined to go 7-for-9 with three home runs and eight RBIs in Thursday's 13-5 win. Johnson leads the NL with nine homers and LaRoche has raised his average by .150 points since last season (think the Braves want them back now?).

The D-backs defeated Colorado 12-11 on Wednesday and the over is 7-2-1 in their last 10 road games.

"Obviously that's a lot of runs for two days," LaRoche told mlb.com. "But I think we're showing some signs of what we can do throughout the whole lineup."

Of course, it helped that the wind was blowing out to left at more than 20 mph. The forecast calls for the same wind pattern today and scheduled starts Rodrigo Lopez and Randy Wells aren't going to scare hitters or Mother Nature.

Thursday's total jumped from 11.5 to as high as 13 before the matinee but the D-backs matched that number by themselves and Friday's total is still of the boards.

No matter the number, the ballpark simply isn't big enough to hold that many blown fly balls.

                  Pick: Over

                    This Day in Baseball
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On April 30 in Baseball History...

1922 - Charlie Robertson of the Chicago White Sox pitched a 2-0 perfect game against the Detroit Tigers.

1946 - Dispelling the rumors that he had lost his fastball after nearly four years in the Navy, Bob Feller of the Cleveland Indians hurls his second no-hitter, beating the New York Yankees 1-0 on Frankie Hayes' home run in the ninth inning.

1949 - Rocky Nelson hits an inside-the-glove two-run home run in short left field to turn a ninth inning 3-1 Cubs lead into a 4-3 Cardinals victory. Cubs center fielder Andy Pafko's catch is ruled a trap by umpire Al Barlick. As Pafko races in, holding the ball high, runners circle the bases.

1958 - Ted Williams becomes the tenth major league player to tally 1,000 extra base hits. The A's beat Boston 10-4.

1961 - Willie Mays of the San Francisco Giants hit four home runs in a 14-4 victory over the Braves in Milwaukee.

1967 - Steve Barber and Stu Miller of the Baltimore Orioles combined on a no-hitter in a 2-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers in the first game of a doubleheader. Barber pitched 8 2/3 innings and Miller one-third of an inning.

1969 - Jim Maloney of the Cincinnati Reds struck out 13 en route to a 10-0 no-hitter over the Houston Astros, the third of his career.

1970 - During a 9-2 loss to the Braves, Cubs outfielder Billy Williams becomes the first player in N.L. history to play 1,000 consecutive games.

1977 - Ron Cey cracks a seventh-inning home run in a 6-4 Dodger win over the Expos. Cey finishes the month with an April major league record 29 RBI (since broken) to lead the Dodgers to a 17-3 start under new manager Tommy Lasorda.

1985 - Dale Murphy drives in his 28th and 29th runs of the season in Atlanta's 8-4 win over the Reds, tying Ron Cey's 1977 record for RBI in April.

1986 - The Mariners strike out 16 more times in a 9-4 loss to the Red Sox, setting a major league record of 36 strikeouts in two consecutive games.

1988 - Dave Winfield drives in his 28th and 29th runs of the season in New York's 15-3 rout of Texas, tying the major league record for RBI in April.

1988 - New York and Cincinnati hooked up in a wild game at Riverfront Stadium that the Mets pulled out 6-5, on a delayed call by first base umpire Dave Pallone. The call resulted in a $10,000 fine and 30-day suspension of Reds manager Pete Rose when Pallone accidentally poked Rose in the cheek and Rose shoved Pallone twice.

1994 - Blue Jays outfielder Joe Carter finishes April with 31 RBI to set a major league record for the month. Colorado's Andres Galarraga sets the N.L. mark with 30.

1997 - Tino Martinez, who got off to a painfully slow start in his first season as a Yankee in 1996, does not have that problem this April. Martinez finishes the month with a major league record 34 RBI.

1997 - The Atlanta Braves have no trouble getting used to their new stadium or their two new outfielders (Kenny Lofton and Michael Tucker) as they become the first team to ever finish April with 19 wins. Atlanta ends the month with a .760 winning percentage overall and a gaudy 12-2 record at Turner Field. Lofton is batting .395 and Tucker is at .418 following a 12-3 pounding of the Reds to round out the month.
