Chicago Bulls at Charlotte Bobcats [8:00 PM ET]

Bulls (-2, O/U 189.5): It all comes down to 1 game, as Chicago simply needs to win tonight to punch their playoff ticket. Chicago is 40-41 SU and 41-38-2 ATS overall this season. Chicago has gone 5-2 SU in their 7 April games this season. The Bulls played clutch yesterday, as they were able to beat the Boston Celtics in a must win situation. PG Derrick Rose has really stepped up for the Bulls of late, as he's carried the team in the most critical of times. Rose had 39 PTS, 5 rebounds, and 7 assists last night against the Celtics. The Bulls are 16-24 SU and 21-19 ATS on the road this season. Chicago is 3-2 ATS as a road favorite of 3 PTS or fewer this year. Chicago is only 19-22 ATS against opponents with a winning SU record this season. The Bulls offense is playing well right now, as they've scored more than 100 PTS in 4 consecutive games. Defensively, the Bulls have held 5 of their past 7 opponents to 93 PTS or fewer. Center Joakim Noah is rounding into form, after missing time due to injuries. For the season, Noah has averaged 10.6 PPG and 10.9 RPG this season.

Bulls are 8-2 ATS last 10 road games vs. a team with a home winning % greater than .600.
Over is 11-5 last 16 games playing on 0 days rest.

                        Key Injuries - None.

PROJECTED SCORE: 101 (Side of the Day)

Bobcats: While Charlotte has nothing to gain by winning tonight, Coach Brown has already stated he will play this game like it means something. That's because Brown believes he owes it to the NBA to play this game all out. Charlotte is sitting in 7th place in the Eastern Conference, while the Bulls and Raptors fight for the 8th and final playoff spot. The Bobcats are 44-37 SU and 44-36-1 ATS overall this season. The Bobcats have been stellar at home this season, going 31-9 SU and 23-17 ATS this season. The Bobcats are 23-17 ATS as the listed underdog this season, including 4-1 ATS as a home underdog of 3 PTS or fewer. Charlotte is 11-9 ATS after a double digit win this season. The Bobcats have struggled with the Bulls this season, losing 2 of the 3 meetings this year. Charlotte's lone win against the Bulls this year was at home by 5 PTS as a 7 point favorite. Charlotte has scored 99 PTS or more in 4 of their past 5 games heading into their regular season finale tonight. F Stephen Jackson leads the Bobcats in scoring, averaging 21.2 PPG this season. F Gerald Wallace is averaging a double double this season, 18.3 PPG and a team high 10.2 RPG.

Bobcats are 0-5 ATS last 5 vs. NBA Central.
Over is 6-2 last 8 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.

Key Injuries - F Gerald Wallace (shoulder) is probable.

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 92

Houston Astros at St. Louis Cardinals [ESPN2 | 8:15 PM ET]

Astros: Houston is off to an embarrassing start, as they are the only winless team in the majors at 0-7. This Astros offense is anemic, as they have been shut out in 3 of their 7 games thus far. Not only is Houston without a win, but they are losing badly. The Astros have been outscored by 29 runs in their 7 games this season. Brett Myers will look to rebound from a poor 1st start, as he gave up 12 hits over 6 innings to the Giants. The Astros have struggled on the road in the past year, as they are only 16-35 in their last 51 road games. If you combine Myers bad form with the Astros poor road play, it appears highly unlikely that Houston will pick up their 1st win of the season today. The Astros are 8-24 in their last 32 games against a right-handed starter. The Astros have struggled following an off day, going 7-19 in their last 26 games in this specific role.

Astros are 0-6 last 6 vs. a team with a winning record.
Under is 17-5 last 22 games vs. a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15.

Key Injuries - 1B Lance Berkman (knee) is out.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 1

Cardinals (-203, O/U 8.5): St. Louis is expected to be a challenger for the NL crown this year, and they are off to a fast 5-2 start. The Cardinals are known for their 1-2 punch of Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright, but their offense is no slouch either. The Cardinals have scored at least 5 runs in 6 of their 7 games this season. Today represents only the 2nd time during this young season that St. Louis is a favorite of -200 or more. Both times they have been listed at this high of a favorite they have faced the Astros. Brad Penny will look to get his 1st win of the season today, with hopefully a bit more offensive help. Penny was unlucky in that he was the starter for the only game the Cardinals scored less than 5 runs this season. The Cardinals are 10-2 at home the past 12 times they've hosted the Astros.

Cardinals are 22-5 last 27 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400.
Under is 9-4 last 13 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400.

Key Injuries - C Jason LaRue (hamstring) is doubtful.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (UNDER - Total of the Day)

                            Wednesday six-pack

-- Pirates batted the pitcher 8th, Ronny Cedeno 9th Tuesday; Cedeno was hitting .375 coming into the game.

-- NC-Wilmington fired its basketball coach January 11, hasn't named a replacement yet. Take your time, fellas.

-- Citrus Bowl is getting artificial turf after the muddy debacle in their bowl game New Year's Day.

-- Angels will fly 50,509 miles this year, most in the major leagues.

-- Its easy to envision Les Miles being Michigan's football coach at this time next year. The ice is cracking under Rich Rodriguez.

-- If major leagues really wanted shorter games, they'd ban managers or coaches from visiting the pitchers' mound. That would shorten games.

Wednesday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a sunny day.......

                            13) Chicago Bulls are batting for playoff spot in Eastern Conference, but from what you read, sounds like they'll be happy when season ends; the coach and GM are at odds over Joakim Noah's playing time (he has sore foot (plantar fasciatis)) and a coaching change seems to be coming. Rumor has it GM Paxson tried to start a fight with Coach Del Negro last week, which doesn't bode well for Del Negro's job security.

                            12) Carl Pavano is 2-0, 1.38 this season, 82-78 in 12 big league seasons; he was a Bronx Bomber for four years, and managed just a 9-8 record in 26 starts. He's made 210 big league starts, so in his non-Bronx years, he's averaged 20.4 starts a season. He basically stole $40M from Bombers.

                            11) Orioles and Astros need to play each other, and soon. Neither team can get out of its own way so far this season. Matusz was terrific for the O's Tuesday, but bullpen imploded behind him in an 8-5 loss to Rays.

                            10) Colorado catcher Olivo has 98 career homers and 99 walks; no one in the history of baseball has hit 100+ HRs while drawing fewer walks than home runs, so Olivo has that going for him.

                            9) Reds' bullpen has gotten a decision in every game since their opener, or seven days in a row. They could use a day off, and soon.

                            8) I've already seen three tremendous catches in outfield this year; one by Willie Harris Saturday that saved a win for Washington, Joe Mather made one for the Cardinals Sunday night in Milwaukee and Chris Coghlan just made one in 11th against the Reds that might have topped the other two.

                            7) Astros were shut out in each of Wandy Rodriguez' first two starts, 3-0 by Barry Zito, 5-0 by Adam Wainwright.

                            6) Hartford basketball coach Leibovitz quit to become as assistant coach at Penn; what D-I head coach quits to become an Ivy League assistant? In three years at Hartford, he was 28-66, so that may be part of it, and he is a Penn alum, but still, its seems like he jumped before he got pushed.

                            5) Clemson hired Wright State coach Brad Brownell, who has done well at both Wright and NC-Wilmington; seems like a solid move. Wondering if Duke's dominance in the ACC discourages some guys from going there to be a coach, since it lowers the ceiling for possible success.

                            4) Not only did Reds' rookie Leake allow only one run in his big league debut Sunday, he also got two hits, so huge day for Arizona State alum who bypassed the minor leagues completely. Wonder how many pitchers have gotten two hits in their first major league start?

                            3) The Masters is only golf major played on the same course every year.

                            2) I'm sitting here typing as Luis Castillo gets thrown out at second by Seth Smith, trying to stretch a single into a double with Mets down 8-0 in sixth inning. Season is nine days old-- Mets are already in deep trouble.

                            1) Put it this way; when the season is seven games old and an announcer uses the term "bridge jumping", its a sign that the ship may be sinking.

                              Len's Top 5

Happy Wednesday everyone, here's my Top 5 for April 14, 2010 from Len Berman.

                              1. Quick Hits

The Yankees raise their 27th championship flag, then beat the Angels 7-5.
The Stanley Cup playoffs begin tonight.
Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is dropped as a sponsor of beef jerky in Pittsburgh. Is it because the product describes him too well?

                              2. Ring in the New

Nobody can throw a ring ceremony like the Yankees. Who else can trot out Yogi Berra and Whitey Ford? Thunderous applause for the "core four," Jeter, Rivera, Posada and Pettitte. Right behind, A-Rod and World Series MVP Hideki Matsui, now with the Angels. A touching moment when Gene Monahan, the ailing long-time trainer, picked up his ring. And I felt a twinge of sadness when George Steinbrenner was introduced before the game, but he wasn't visible. He was later announced to the crowd, but he acts like a shell of his former self. Without George, there would not have been a yesterday.

                              3. What, the Puck?

"The NHL regular season is a joke because they play 82 games just to eliminate the Rangers" Sure it's an old joke, but Nashville made the playoffs. So did Phoenix which nearly folded. Most people don't even know there are pro hockey teams in Tennessee and Arizona. But as bad as the regular season is, that's how great the playoffs are. The matchups in the East are fabulous. They never fight this time of year, and of course they keep playing until somebody really wins, no shootouts. So drop the puck and lets get it on. Here's another oldie but goodie for the non-hockey fan out there. "What's red white and blue and plays golf in April?" Yup, the New York Rangers.

                              4. The Win Column

After ragging on the Mets for their advertised $11.00 ticket, when it really costs $17.50, subscriber Pete M. wanted to tell me about something the Mets got right. "On opening day they were having computer issues with the in-seat food service. I had to wait 90 minutes to get my Shake Shack. Well yesterday I received an apology letter in the mail along with $50 in gift cards to be used for food or anything at future games."
There you go Mets fans, your team is batting .500 in the Top 5 this week. Now about that on-field record.....(Last place after another loss last night in Colorado.)

                              5. Political Football

A recent survey says fans of professional golf tend to be more Republican. NBA fans are more likely Democrats. Republicans are also heavy into college football, NASCAR, and bull riding. Democrats lean towards tennis and WWE Wrestling. If you're looking for a sport that cuts across party lines, it's Major League Baseball. I have no idea what any of this means, but it appears at least in Washington, both parties are equally into mud wrestling.

Bonus Event: Not such a good day for another President. Abe Lincoln is shot. 1865.
