    Daily Sports Roundup: April 14

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The NBA ends its regular season, the NHL begins its postseason slate, and the Red Sox take to the field against the Twins.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA ends its regular-season slate on Wednesday with 28 of the league's 30 teams in action. The matchups for Wednesday night: Cleveland at Atlanta, New York at Toronto, Indiana at Washington, Memphis at Oklahoma City, Philadelphia at Orlando, Detroit at Minnesota, New Jersey at Miami, New Orleans at Houston, San Antonio at Dallas, Milwaukee at Boston, Chicago at Charlotte, Golden State at Portland, Phoenix at Utah, and the Lakers at the Clippers. The Lakers will play without Kobe Bryant on Wednesday night as the star guard gives his various ailments (broken finger, sore knee, sore ankle) a rest before the playoffs get underway. The Lakers have locked up the top seed in the Western Conference.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League schedule for Wednesday has Kansas City at Detroit, the Angels at the Yankees, Tampa Bay at Baltimore, Texas at Cleveland, the White Sox at Toronto, Oakland at Seattle, and Boston at Minnesota. The Red Sox will give the ball to John Lackey on the road on Wednesday; righthander Lackey held the Yankees scoreless on three hits over six innings of work in his first start of the year, but had to settle for a no-decision. The Twins will counter with Kevin Slowey; righthander Slowey picked up the win in his first outing last week, allowing just one run on seven hits over 5 1-3 innings of work versus the Angels.

Meanwhile, the National League on Wednesday offers up Milwaukee at the Cubs, Pittsburgh at San Francisco, Washington at Philadelphia, Cincinnati at Florida, Houston at St. Louis, the Mets at Colorado, Atlanta at San Diego, and Arizona at the Dodgers. The Diamondbacks will go with Rodrigo Lopez on Wednesday; righthander Lopez dazzled the Pirates in his first start of the season, holding them to one run on six hits over six innings of work while fanning five batters. Chad Billingsley will be on the mound for the Dodgers in this one; righthander Billingsley held the Pirates to one run over 5 1-3 innings last week.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the NHL playoffs get underway on Wednesday with four games on the schedule: Ottawa at Pittsburgh, Philadelphia at New Jersey, Colorado at San Jose, and Detroit at Phoenix. The Coyotes have home-ice advantage in their playoff series with the Red Wings after finishing the season in fourth place in the Western Conference at 50-25-7. The Wings went 8-1-1 in their last 10 games to end up in fifth place in the West at 44-24-14 on the season. The oddsmakers see Game 1 as an even battle, with both teams pegged at -110 (and the total set at 5 goals). The Red Wings and Coyotes split their four-games series during the year.

Bettor's best friend: Wednesday's wagering tips

      Lines off the board

Philadelphia 76ers at Orlando Magic – The Magic could end up resting players with the Eastern Conference’s No. 2 seed locked up but the second overall spot in the playoffs is still up for grabs (see note below).

Memphis Grizzlies at Oklahoma City Thunder – Kevin Durant could sit this game out to rest for the playoffs.

Detroit Pistons at Minnesota Timberwolves – Kevin Love (thumb) left Monday’s game and is questionable. Jonny Flynn (hip flexor) left Monday’s game and is doubtful. Rodney Stuckey (ribs) is out for the game.

New Jersey Nets at Miami Heat – Jermaine O’Neal (ankle) did not play in the team’s last game and is questionable.

San Antonio Spurs at Dallas Mavericks – Antonio McDyess could miss the game to rest for the playoffs. Caron Butler (hip) missed the team’s game on Monday and is questionable.

Milwaukee Bucks at Boston Celtics – Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce are both listed as probable for the game but could end up sitting for rest.

Cleveland Cavaliers at Atlanta Hawks – A cavalcade of Cavs players could sit this one out (see injury note below). Jamal Crawford (toe) did not play on Monday and is questionable. Josh Smith (groin) is expected to play.

Phoenix Suns at Utah Jazz – Mehmet Okur (Achilles) practiced on Sunday and was expected to play on Tuesday. Andrei Kirilenko (calf) was not playing in Tuesday’s game and will likely be out for this one as well.

Los Angeles Lakers at Los Angeles Clippers – Eric Gordon and Drew Gooden both sat in Monday’s game and are questionable. Baron Davis (wrist) is not going to play. Kobe Bryant (finger) is out.

Lines to keep an eye on

The total in the Hornets-Rockets game has escalated one point from its opener and now stands at 216.5. Eight of the last 10 games in this series have gone under the posted total.

The Penguins opened as -195 favorites over Ottawa but that number can be found as high as -220 on some boards now.

The opening moneyline for the Angels-Yankees game in New York had the home team favored at -189 but now that number has elevated to as high as -230 at some shops.

The Twins-Red Sox total has jumped from an opener of 8.5 up to 9 (see note below).

St. Louis opened as -190 chalk over the winless Astros at home but that moneyline has jumped to -210 in some markets.

The Diamondbacks-Dodgers total has dropped from an opener of 8.5 down to 8.

      Weather report

Wind will be blowing in from center and left-center field 22 mph at Sun Life Stadium on Wednesday in the Red-Marlins matchup.

      Who’s hot

Miami is 9-1 SU and 6-4 ATS in its last 10 affairs.

The Flyers have won six of their last seven games versus New Jersey.

Minnesota is 6-2 SU to start the season.

      Who’s not

The Raptors are 1-5 SU and 2-4 ATS in their last six and the Knicks would love nothing more than to play spoiler on Wednesday.

Baltimore has gotten off to a 1-6 start to the 2010 season.

The Avalanche have dropped three straight and are 3-7 SU in their last 10 games.

      Key stat

7 – Number of hit batsman and wild pitches by the Cleveland Indians pitchers in seven games this season.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Cavs center Shaquille O’Neal could return from injury for Wednesday’s finale against the Hawks. Shaq hasn’t played since tearing a ligament in his thumb on Feb. 25 so his minutes will be limited if he does suit up. Head coach Mike Brown hinted that he might play LeBron James as well to get the two on the floor together but was ambiguous saying, “Maybe they will, maybe they won’t.”

      Game of the Day

NHL Eastern Conference Playoffs: Round 1 preview and picks

      Notable quotable

"It's obviously traumatic when you witness something like that, but these guys understand the privilege of playing baseball. I think when something like that happens, it just reinforces how lucky we are. I don't know anything about the guy, but obviously something was troubling him."

-- Angels manager Mike Scioscia said after 15 members of his team witnessed the aftermath of a suicide that took place at the hotel they were staying at in New York.

      Tips and notes

      - A Yale physicist projects that scoring will be down at the Twins new ballpark. Robert Adair said that “Cold air is more dense and thus more resistant than hot air. The same fly ball travels about four feet less for every 10-degree drop in temperature.” For the full article click here but Adair’s assumption could mean a lot of unders in Minnesota at Target Field. The Red Sox and Twins played under the posted total of 9 in the ballpark opener.

      - When the Lakers defeat the Kings on Tuesday night, they will still have to get a win and an Orlando Magic loss on Wednesday in order to earn the No. 2 overall seed in the NBA Playoffs. Magic coach Stan Van Gundy has been adamant about not resting his players like other teams have so you can be sure his squad will be going all out against the Sixers. Orlando is peaking at the right time, having won five straight (5-0 ATS) and 16-of-20 (13-6-1 ATS).

      - With Richard Hamilton out of the lineup, Pistons coach Jon Kuester has been experimenting with different lineups and rotations. He said not having Rip on the floor opens it up more and allows them to utilize a “three-guard rotation”. Going with a smaller lineup usually equates to a faster pace of play and Detroit has played to three consecutive overs.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Cleveland Cavaliers at Atlanta Hawks

If you bought tickets to this Eastern Conference clash a couple months ago, hoping that these teams would be fighting for playoff position on the final day of the regular season, you might feel a little cheated.

Don’t expect either the Cavaliers or Hawks to field their starters for more than a handful minutes at the most. But, before you see what you can get for the tickets on craigslist, consider that this might be the last regular season game for one of the NBA’s all-time greatest players.

Veteran center Shaquille O’Neal is expected to return to action versus Atlanta after missing the last month and a half after having surgery on his injured thumb. Shaq is rumored to play about 20 minutes in order to work some of the rust off before the postseason begins. There is also talk that James could see a little floor time for the first time in three games.

"They probably wouldn't play the whole game on Wednesday, so are we going to be that much better because they played 20 minutes together?," coach Mike Brown told reporters. "Maybe they will, maybe they won't. I keep going back and forth."

A little LeBron and Shaq is better than none.

            Pick: Cleveland

Memphis Grizzlies at Oklahoma City Thunder

The Thunder have their plane ride to Los Angeles booked for the first round of the NBA Playoffs and Kevin Durant has the league’s scoring title in the bag.

That doesn’t leave much motivation for Wednesday’s game against the Grizzlies.

Oklahoma City heads into the regular season finale off back-to-back losses. The team fought hard down the home stretch of the schedule, hoping to avoid the eighth spot. But with a date with the reigning champs locked in, bettors should expect the Thunder to take it easy at home to Memphis.

Durant and the starters will be limited at most, putting the load on a bench that ranked second-last in the NBA in bench scoring. The reserves averaged just 27 points with guys like James Harden and Eric Maynor providing the bulk of those numbers.

Things could get ugly at the Ford Center Wednesday.

            Pick: Memphis

                  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ottawa Senators at Pittsburgh Penguins (-210, 5.5)

If the Ottawa Senators are going to put poor postseason performances behind them, they’ll have to dethrone the reigning Stanley Cup champs in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Heading into Game 1, the Sens are weighing the best way to attack one of the NHL’s most explosive teams. And as game time ticks closer, the game plan appears to key on the most important members of Pittsburgh’s star-studded lineup and let the role players do the damage.

“It really starts in neutral zone,” defenseman Chris Phillips told the Ottawa Citizen when asked about stopping Penguins star Sidney Crosby. “There’s a strong focus to try and take away his space there and to have somebody close to deter his teammates from trying to give him the puck, where he can create a lot of speed and carry that into the offensive zone. Obviously, we have to be aware when he’s on the ice. It’s not just the two defensemen, it’s all five guys, it’s being extra focused.”

Crosby has been the motor for the Penguins offense all season but stepped up his production in the final games of the season while chasing both the goal scoring and points scoring leads. If Ottawa can lock him up, Pittsburgh’s attack could have a tough time creating on its own.

“That’s what has got us here,” forward Jason Spezza told reporters. “We’re not going to outrun and gun Pittsburgh. We’ve got to make sure we play a smart game.”

The last time these teams met, the Senators did a fine job limiting Crosby to just three shots on goal and a plus/minus of -2 during a 4-1 win back in late January.

                  Pick: Under

Detroit Red Wings at Phoenix Coyotes (-110, 5)

Hockey fans can expect the Phoenix Coyotes to be holding the sticks a little tight when they take the ice for Game 1 Wednesday night.

Phoenix is coming off a Cinderella season in which it won 50 games – a new franchise record – and is in the NHL playoffs for the first time since 2002. Despite being the No. 4 seed, the Coyotes are considered the underdogs against the postseason-savvy Detroit Red Wings in the opening round.

"That's who we've been all year," Coyotes coach Dave Tippett told CBC Sports of his team’s underdog status. "From the first day I got here, people looked around like, 'What are you doing?' That's how we've been able to thrive all year, so why would it change now?"

With the pressure of the playoffs overwhelming even the most veteran team, expect the desert dogs to bobble a couple pucks, miss a couple passes and fan on a couple shots during the first two periods.

                  Pick: Under

NHL Round 1 Previews and Picks
                    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NHL Eastern Conference: Round 1 preview and picks

Washington Capitals (1) vs. Montreal Canadiens (8) – season series (2-1-1 for Washington)

Expect a bunch of goals in this series. Both teams put everything at the net and neither have the goaltending to win 2-1 games. Ovechkin gets all the headlines, but it’ll be Nicklas Backstrom who gives the Caps the boost they’ll need.

The Canadiens limped into the postseason and don’t have the makeup to compete with Washington, especially when the Caps get the puck deep and start circling and cycling.

Hal Gill and the rest of the Montreal defense are going to have a terrible time chasing the puck in their own end and the team’s under-sized forward unit will need a lot of power play goals to make this series interesting.

                    Pick: Capitals in five games

New Jersey Devils (2) at Philadelphia Flyers (7) – season series (5-1 for Philadelphia)

You can’t knock Philadelphia’s intensity. The Flyers hung on down the stretch of the regular season and look to overcome some questionable goaltending (what else is new?) with gritty play, leaning on their big defense. They’ll have their hands full, too.

Don’t be surprised if Ilya Kovalchuk takes hold of this series, his first taste of NHL playoff hockey. The Devils have enough depth up front that he doesn’t feel like he needs to do everything for this club and everybody seems to be gelling in the dressing room. He might be just what New Jersey needs to help Brodeur make another deep run.

                    Pick: Devils in six games

Buffalo Sabres (3) vs. Boston Bruins (6) – season series (4-1 for Boston)

The Bruins are a tough read here. Injuries have ripped this team apart, rookie goalie Tuukka Raask has emerged to put reigning Vezina Trophy winner Tim Thomas on the bench and Boston’s offense has been terrible all year. So there are some question marks with the Bruins.

Buffalo, meanwhile, has one constant: goaltender Ryan Miller, a Hart Trophy candidate this season. Miller can win this series on his own if it comes down to it.

Keep an eye on the totals for this series. We could be in for a lot of unders.

                    Pick: Buffalo in four games

Pittsburgh Penguins (4) vs. Ottawa Senators (5) – season series (2-2 tie)

It’d be easy just to pencil Pittsburgh past the Sens, but Sidney Crosby’s club has some work ahead of it. Jason Spezza shook off a bad start to the season to finish strong and Daniel Alfredsson continues to roll along as one of the better captains in the league.

Ottawa will need both of those guys to step up huge with the enigma Alex Kovalev on the shelf. Meanwhile, Brian Elliott is holding the fort in goal, or was during the regular season anyway. This will be his first taste of the postseason.

The Pens look to be rounding into form just in time for the start of this series. Evgeni Malkin’s really hitting his stride over the last week or two (remember, he topped the playoff scoring board last year) and Jordan Stall is as steady as ever. This is the best team down the middle in the league, which means a lot this time of year.

                    Pick: Penguins in five games

NHL Western Conference: Round 1 preview and picks

The Western Conference was the superior conference this season with seven teams earning at least 100 points.

Each team, however, has its own set of issues, whether it is a rookie goaltender (Chicago, Detroit), a lack of offense (Phoenix, Nashville), a banged up defense (Vancouver), inexperience (Los Angeles, Colorado), or a playoff curse (Joe Thornton, err, I mean San Jose).

To be used strictly for recreational purposes, here are my picks for each series.

Avs vs. Sharks (season series 2-2)

According to oddsmakers, this is the most lopsided matchup of the first round.

The Avs ended October 10-2-2 and goaltender Craig Anderson was named the player of the month.

Since then, Colorado has gone 33-28-7 and ended the season 3-7-3 over its final 13 games.

San Jose placed first in the Western Conference with a 51-20-11 record and finished the regular season on an 8-1-1 run.

San Jose has depth on offense and defense, and a top tier goaltender in Evgeni Nabokov. Every year, however, they falter in the playoffs.

The Sharks, and particularly Joe Thornton, seem to lack the confidence in the postseason that they exhibit during the regular season.

San Jose may not win the Stanley Cup this year, but they should get by the Avalanche with ease.

                    Series prediction: Sharks in 5.

Preds vs. Hawks (season series, 4-2 Chicago)

Nashville was not expected to make the playoffs, but has put together a solid regular season. The Preds also finished strong, ending the season on an 11-3-1 run.

Chicago is relying on rookie Antti Niemi to lead the way between the pipes. The 26 year-old won the starting job from Cristobal Huet and has posted seven shutouts in 34 games.

If the Preds have any chance to win this series, it will be because of Pekka Rinne. He will steal one, maybe two games, but the Preds will come up just short.

                    Series prediction: Hawks in 6.

Kings vs. Canucks (season series, 3-1 Vancouver)

Vancouver went from 11th in NHL scoring last year to being the top offensive team in the Western Conference. Defense and goaltending are the concerns for the Canucks.

The Canucks’ defensive corps is banged up and All-Star goaltender Roberto Luongo is having his worst season statistically since joining Vancouver. Luongo ended the season by allowing 17 goals in four games, and gave up at least three goals in seven of Vancouver’s final eight games.

Los Angeles has quietly amassed 101 points and has a mix of young stars and accomplished veterans. The Kings will continue to surprise, and will improve as the series with the Canucks progresses.

                    Series prediction: Kings in 7

Wings vs. Coyotes (season series 2-2)

Most people will be picking the Red Wings in this series, and it’s difficult to blame them.

The Wings ended the season on a tear, winning 17 of their last 22 games. They are finally healthy and have found a solution in net: rookie goaltender Jimmy Howard.

Because of Detroit’s perennial success and recent streak, it’s easy to forget the club is playing a team that won 50 games this season and finished ahead of them in the standings.

Phoenix is used to playing close games. The Coyotes won 29 times by one goal. Goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov has had a phenomenal season, and Phoenix found scorers in trade deadline acquisitions for Wojtek Wolski and Lee Stempniak.

I think the right play is on the Coyotes.

                    Series prediction: Coyotes in 7

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Angels at New York Yankees (-220, 10)

A key element that used to win Mike Scioscia division crown after division crown was a strong bullpen. Scott Shields was once the most coveted reliever in all of baseball but it appears those days are gone.

Through eight games, the Angels bullpen has registered a 5.48 ERA. It was responsible for a total of four runs in Tuesday’s loss to the Yankees.

Javier Vasquez will take the mound for New York on Wednesday and his last outing was a forgettable one after giving up eight earned runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings of work. He admitted he “made a lot of mistakes.”

Vasquez isn’t having nearly the success he did with the Braves last season and the switch to AL lineups has contributed to his ballooned 12.71 ERA on the season.

New York’s potent batting order is averaging more than six runs a ballgame which has produced a 6-1 over/under mark in the team’s first seven outings.

                        Pick: Over

Texas Rangers at Cleveland Indians (-105, 8)

The Rangers gave away two wins already this season because of the ineptness of former closer Frank Francisco. The team will hand the ball to another former reliever, C.J. Wilson, on Wednesday in his second start of the season.

Wilson made his first start since 2005 last week against the Jays and was impressive after going seven shutout innings and only surrendering five hits.

"You can't say enough about what C.J. did," manager Ron Washington told MLB.com. "He moved his fastball around, had his changeup and slider, he had everything working. When he needed to, he was able to bear down and get the job done."

Now that the Rangers have their closer situation shored up with fireballer Neftali Feliz finishing games, expect this team to go on a run.

Texas has taken six straight and nine out of the last 10 games from the Tribe

                        Pick: Rangers

                          This Day in Baseball
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On April 14 in Baseball History...

1910 - William Howard Taft becomes the first president to throw out the first ball at a baseball opener in Washington. Walter Johnson catches it, then pitches the first of his 14 Opening Day games. An easy fly hit into the overflow crowd becomes a ground-rule double, marring a 3-0 Big Train pitching gem.

1915 - The Athletics' Herb Pennock comes within one out of pitching the first Opening Day no-hitter. A scratch single by Harry Hooper is the only Red Sox hit in a 5-0 loss.

1917 - Eddie Cicotte of the Chicago White Sox pitched an 11-0 no-hitter against the St. Louis Browns.

1925 - In the first regular-season Cubs game to be broadcast on the radio, Quin Ryan announces the contest from the grandstand roof for WGN. Grover Alexander wins for the Cubs 8-2 over the Pirates and adds a single, double, and home run.

1925 - The Cleveland Indians opened the season with a 21-14 victory over the St. Louis Browns, the most runs scored by one team on opening day. The Indians scored 12 runs in the eighth inning when the Browns made five errors, four of them by first baseman George Sisler.

1925 - Two future Hall of Famers make their major league debuts for the A's in the same game. Lefty Grove starts against Boston and leaves in the fourth after walking four and striking out nobody. He gives up five runs on six hits. In the eighth, Mickey Cochrane pinch-hits for catcher Cy Perkins, singles, and stays in behind the plate while the A's go on to score nine runs in the last four innings to win 9-8 in ten innings. Grove, known as Groves in Baltimore, is also listed that way in the New York Times box score. Grove will become the first pitcher to lead the A.L. in strikeouts and walks in the same year.

1946 - Manager Mel Ott of the Giants hits his 511th and final home run on Opening Day, an 8-4 home victory over the Phillies. The next day Ott will injure his knee diving for a ball and play only occasionally thereafter.

1955 - Elston Howard becomes the first black to wear a Yankees uniform. He singles in his first at-bat, against the Red Sox, as the Yanks win 8-4.

1964 - Sandy Koufax throws his ninth complete game without allowing a walk as he beats St. Louis 4-0 in his only start as an Opening Day pitcher.

1967 - Red Sox rookie Billy Rohr debuts at Yankee Stadium. He startles everyone by taking a no-hitter to the ninth inning, but Elston Howard lines a 3-2 pitch for a single to right-center with two outs. Carl Yastrzemski had kept the no-hitter alive with a spectacular grab of a Tom Tresh drive to deep left field to open the ninth. Rohr wins the game 3-0, but he will pitch only once more for Boston before returning to the minors.

1968 - Jim Bunning's first win with Pittsburgh, 3-0 at Los Angeles, is his 40th career shutout and includes his 1,000th N.L. strikeout, making him the first pitcher since Cy Young with 1,000 in each league.

1969 - The first major league game outside the United States was played in Montreal's Jarry Park with the Expos defeating the St. Louis Cardinals 8-7.

1990 - Bret Saberhagen gets the win and Mark Davis earns the save as Kansas City beats Toronto 3-1. It is the first time ever that two reigning Cy Young Award winners have figured in the same victory.

1991 - Nolan Ryan becomes the 12th pitcher to surpass 5,000 innings pitched and gets plenty of hitting help as Texas whips Baltimore 15-3.

1993 - The first-ever Australian battery comes from Milwaukee. Left-hander Graeme Lloyd and backstop Dave Nilsson, who make up half of the total number of Australian players to ever make the major leagues, make history in the Brewers' 12-2 loss to the Angels.

1998 - Mark McGwire hits three home runs, breaking an eight-game homerless drought, as the Cardinals rout the Arizona Diamondbacks 15-5. After tying Willie Mays' major league record by homering in the first four games of the season, McGwire had not homered since April 4.
