    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, March 15

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Flames play host to the Red Wings, the Celtics get a visit from the Pistons, and the Lakers try for a win over Golden State.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There are six games on the NBA's schedule for Monday, with Detroit at Boston, New York at Philadelphia, Denver at Houston, Washington at Utah, New Orleans at the Clippers, and the Lakers at Golden State. The Lakers (48-18 SU, 28-36-2 ATS) won their second straight game on Friday night, getting past the Suns in Phoenix by a final score of 102-96. Kobe Bryant had 21 points for Los Angeles in that victory. The Warriors (18-47 SU, 37-21-1 ATS) got past the Raptors at home in their last game on Saturday; Stephen Curry had 35 points. The Lakers and Warriors have met three times this season, with Los Angeles winning each time.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

As well, the NHL offers up three games on Monday night, with Boston at New Jersey, Edmonton at Columbus, and Detroit at Calgary. The Red Wings won their second straight game on Saturday, slipping past the Sabres in a 3-2 overtime decision. Pavel Datsyuk, Patrick Eaves, and Brian Rafalski scored for Detroit in that game, while Jimmy Howard stopped 24 of 26 Buffalo shots. Detroit is just 1-2 against Calgary so far this season, and they lost 4-2 at home to the Flames when the teams last met on March 9. Jarome Iginla and Rene Bourque each had two points for Calgary in that win, and Miikka Kiprusoff made 28 saves.

Bettors' best friend: Monday's wagering tips

      Lines off the board

New Orleans Hornets at Los Angeles Clippers - Hornets forward James Posey (flu) is probable and Clippers guard Eric Gordon (leg) is questionable.

Washington Wizards at Utah Jazz - The Jazz played Sunday night and guard Deron Williams (shoulder) is probable for Monday.

Edmonton Oilers at Columbus Blue Jackets - Oilers center Patrick O'Sullivan is questionable and Blue Jackets right wing Kristian Huselius (upper body) is probable.

Lines to keep an eye on

Detroit Pistons at Boston Celtics - The Celts opened as 10.5-point favorites but quickly fell to 9.5. Boston is 1-8 ATS in its last nine Monday games.

Denver Nuggets at Houston Rockets - The total opened at 215.5 but climbed to 216.5 at some books. Over is 7-2 in the Nuggets last nine as a favorite.

Los Angeles Lakers at Golden State Warriors - The Lakers fell from 8-point favorites to 7.5 and the total dropped from 223 to 222.

      Who's hot

Golden State Warriors are 6-2 ATS in their last eight despite going 2-6 SU.

Denver Nuggets have won six in a row SU.

Calgary Flames are 5-1 in their last six.

      Who's not

Washington Wizards are 1-9 SU in last 10.

Philadelphia 76ers are 1-8 SU in their last nine.

New Orleans Hornets are 1-6 SU and 0-6-1 ATS in their last seven.

Los Angeles Clippers are 1-9 SU in their last 10.

      Key stat

15.9 - Average margin of victory for the New Orleans Hornets in their current 10-game winning streak over the Los Angeles Clippers.

      Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

With Boston Bruins center Marc Savard out with a concussion, the Bruins need Mirslav Satan back on the ice to pick up some slack and his offense. Satan has been sidelined with a groin injury and is questionable to return for tonight's game against the New Jersey Devils, the sixth stop in their current seven-game road trip. If Satan can't skate and score the Bruins will be hard pressed to keep pace with the Devils.

      Game of the day

Detroit Red Wings at Calgary Flames - Both teams have won four of their last five and are battling for playoff position.

      Notable quotable

"I am a dummy. I have no intelligence whatsoever."

ESPN college basketball analyst Dick Vitale said while prefacing his argument that Virginia Tech should have made the NCAA Tournament ahead of Wake Forest.

      Tips and notes

The New Orleans Hornets had lots of extra leg room on their flight out West without James Posey (flu), Peja Stojakovic (abdominal strain) and Sean Marks (shoulder) aboard. The Hornets are on a combined 0-8 ATS run without these three in the lineup, not to mention Chris Paul (knee). Posey plans to fly solo to join the team in L.A. for tonight's game at the Clip Joint but his help may be too little, too late.

The Utah Jazz return home tonight with no rest from a four-game, five-day road trip and the journey took its toll. Forward Andrei Kirilenko (calf), center Mehmet Okur (back) and guard Ronnie Price (wrist) are out for tonight's game against the Washington Wizards and guard Deron Williams (shoulder) will try to play. The combination of pain and fatigue are a concern for the usually hot home team.

Whether you're filling out a bracket for an office pool or looking for some action on the future odds, it's best to play it safe when picking a champion. Sixteen of the last 19 national titlists have hailed from either the Big 12, Big East, ACC or SEC, also the top four conferences in the RPI this season. Major conference teams are battle- and bettor-tested. You might get a bigger payday with the mid-majors, but only if they win.

        Monday six-pack

-- According to cnbc, Louisville's basketball program made a profit of $16,869,659 LY. Thats before they get their new arena next season.

-- The last time no SEC West team made the NCAAs was 1978.

-- The last time UCLA/North Carolina/UConn all missed the NCAAs in the same season, Lyndon Johnson was President of the United States.

-- Virginia Tech is first team to go 10-6 in ACC and miss the NCAAs. Why? Their non-conference strength of schedule was 317th out of 347.

-- I've asked this before and I ask again- what does ESPN see in Robert M Knight to put him on live TV? What does he add to the program?

-- Mississippi State had Kentucky by the throat twice, lost both games in OT; win one of those games and they're in. Simple as that.

Monday's List of 13: Quick impressions of the Field of 65.......

I'm about to hunker down and study these first round games, but here are some quick impressions after seeing the pairings for Thursday/Friday

        13) Gonzaga got bad deal; if they beat Florida State, statistically the best defensive team in country (according to kenpom.com), then they have to play Syracuse in Buffalo, a definitive road game. We don't know status of Erinze Onuako's knee, but Syracuse will be tough in western New York.

        12) UTEP/Utah State/Minnesota were last three teams in; LY, if you look at the last six teams in the tournament, they went 5-1 in the first round.

        11) BYU hasn't won an NCAA tournament game since they beat SMU in 1993- they sure as hell should beat Florida in first round this year.

        10) Pitt's student cheering section is called the Oakland Zoo, so its little weird that they're playing Oakland in their first game.

        9) Murray State will remind Vanderbilt coach Kevin Stallings of the Siena team that upset his Commodores two years ago.

        8) Speaking of Siena, they live with the angels; they play their conference tournament at home, then draw a banged-up Purdue team playing without its leading scorer and with two other starters nursing injuries. Boilers were down 37-11 at half to Minnesota in Big 11 semifinals Saturday. Jackson only played 17 minutes in that game.

        7) Eight of last twelve national champions won their conference tourney.

        6) ESPN showed a chart Sunday about teams that were ranked #1 during season, then faded late in season; Texas (8 seed) is the 2nd-lowest seeded team that was #1 (2003 Alabama wound up as 10-seed). All the teams on that list fared poorly in the tournament that season. Bad news for Texas.

        5) Can someone explain to me why Duke is playing the play-in winner? Isn't the #1 team overall supposed to play the worst team? Winthrop is playing Ark-Pine Bluff in the play-in game, by the way.

        4) Ark-Pine Bluff started this season 0-11; they didn't play a home game until January 16, taking guarantee games on the road, with seven of those 11 losses against teams ranked in top 60 nationally. They finished second in the very lame SWAC. Will be interesting to see them Tuesday.

        3) Vermont is in tournament for the first time since their glorious run in '06, when they upset Syracuse in a 4-13 game. This is a 1-16 game, and no 16-seed has ever beaten a 1-seed. Ain't happening this year, either.

        2) Kansas is playing Lehigh; don't think Bill Self isn't thinking about '05, when Bucknell of the Patriot League upset his Jayhawks in a 3-14 game, one of only two 3-14 upsets in last 11 years (10 in 12 years before that).

        1) Worst live TV reaction to seeing their seed: Tennessee, after seeing #6 seed they got. No cheering, no laughing, nada. Not sure they even knew they were on TV, but for sure, they looked unhappy.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Lakers at Golden State Warriors (+7.5, 223)

Lacking any type of inside game, the Warriors have decided to live and die by the 3-point shot. According to the Oakland Tribune, Golden State made 10 or more treys five times in the first 50 games but has done so 12 times in the past 15 games.

"There is usually four guys that can comfortably shoot 3s on the floor," Stephen Curry told reporters following Saturday's win over the Raptors. "That makes it hard for a defense to guard all of them, especially when the same guys can put it on the floor and get to the basket. It's tough to defend, and we are knocking them down."

The dedication to long bombing has been a profitable strategy for the Warriors. The club is 6-2 against the spread over its last eight games despite winning just two of those games outright.

Now the bad news: the Lakers possess the type of post play that can really expose G-State’s shortcomings. Los Angeles might not cover the spread on the Warriors’ home floor but the Purple and Gold will contest those shots from beyond the arc.

              Pick: Under

New York Knicks at Philadelphia 76ers (-3.5, 210.5)

Good luck finding any notable game facts from these two teams’ beat reporters. Philly and New York hoop fans are all looking forward to the draft and free agency because there’s nothing worth mentioning.

In the Big Apple Tracy McGrady is playing like he belongs in a retirement community pick-up league while Philly fans are more interested in Allen Iverson’s off-the-court problems than their own team’s on-court issues.

But if you’re actually paying attention, both sides are still staying competitive and catch opponents napping every so often. The Knicks ended Dallas’ long win streak and the Sixers nearly bested the Cavs if not for a few late mistakes.

Expect for a lot of quick shots and an up-tempo pace from both sides. These players are facing uncertain futures with their clubs and are looking to impress to stay on another season.

New Knick forward Bill Walker is a perfect example. He notched 23 points in just 25 minutes against Dallas.

              Pick: Over

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Bruins at New Jersey Devils (-165, 5)

The Boston Bruins are going to have to find someone else to step up in place of the injured Marc Savard. The All-Star center led the B’s in scoring in each of the past three seasons but is expected to miss the rest of the season because of a head injury.

Canadian Olympic gold medalist Patrice Bergeron is playmaker most likely to see more ice time on the power play with Savard out. Bergeron tallied five points in his first two games without Savard but was held off the score sheet Saturday against the Canadians.

“We didn’t start right and ultimately it cost us the game pretty much. The first period wasn’t the way we wanted to start,” Bergeron told the Boston Herald following the 3-2 loss to Montreal.

While Boston offense is shorthanded, the Devils’ attack is rounding into form thanks the improved play from recently acquired Ilya Kovalchuk. The sniper has found the back of the net in four of his six games since returning from the Olympic break.

                    Pick: New Jersey

Edmonton Oilers at Columbus Blue Jackets (N/A)

Even the most dedicated hockey fan might have trouble telling you who the No. 1 goalie is in the City of Champions. The Oilers originally planned on having that position filled after the signing of Nikolai Khabibulin.

But a rash of injuries has left Edmonton coach Pat Quinn with a long list of jobbers, including Jeff Deslauriers and Devan Dubnyk.

Of course neither no-name netminder is getting much help from his mates. Edmonton has been shorthanded 24 times in their last three games.

"Once again, we took too many penalties," Oilers defenseman Tom Gilbert told the Edmonton Journal following Saturday’s 6-4 setback to the Leafs. “It's not easy killing seven, eight penalties a game, especially five-on-threes.”

It shouldn’t come as a shock the Oilers are playing with undisciplined rage lately. They’ve been plagued by an injury and flu bug for much of the season, and Quinn probably stopped paying attention to the action on the ice about two months ago.

Even worse, when the Oilers actually do string together a few wins, like they did last week, their home fans start to complain about how the victories will affect the team’s position in the draft.

Not to worry, Edmonton fans. Your team has gone back into loser cruise control.

                    Pick: Columbus
