Pistons: This season has been rather forgettable for Detroit, as they are likely to miss the playoffs for only the second time this decade. After losing 3 consecutive games SU and almost a 4th, the Lakers have decided once again that defense will be their utmost priority. In their latest game, they allowed the highest scoring team in the NBA to only score 96 PTS. The Lakers hope to continue that defensive effort today against the 3rd highest scoring team in the NBA. Los Angeles has only won 3 of their past 12 games ATS, as they simply haven't been playing very good basketball of late. The team is still battling some nagging injuries and there is even a little bit of turmoil between star players. Regardless of the soap opera known as the Lakers, they still have the 2nd best record in the NBA. 1. Quick Hits

Gentlemen, and ladies, start your office pools! The field of 65 is now set for the NCAA basketball championship.
The Jets replace one "old" running back, Thomas Jones, with another "old" running back, LaDainian Tomlinson.
On your Cleveland Browns quarterback scorecard, they have signed Jake Delhomme and traded Brady Quinn to Denver.
Ouch. David Beckham tears his Achilles ending his World Cup hopes.
After losing her first race Saturday, the filly Rachel Alexandra will not face undefeated mare Zenyatta in that much anticipated showdown next month in Arkansas.

2. Monday Musings

* He'll be less of a presence in the locker room. Jets Coach Rex Ryan undergoes weight loss surgery.

* Geographically challenged. That noted Eastern establishment state of West Virginia wins the Big East basketball championship.

* 1/8th of the NCAA Tournament comes from the Big East, 8 teams. Then again it seems like they have hundreds of teams in the Big East Conference.

* Your 8-zillionth example why not to bet on sports. Dallas hosted the awful Knicks Saturday night. The Mavs were riding a 13 game winning streak and were favored by 11 1/2 points. The last time they played, the Mavs won by 50. A lock for Dallas right? The Knicks won by 28.

3. March Madness

Here we go. The top seeds are Kansas, Kentucky, Duke and Syracuse. What have you done for me lately? Big name schools like North Carolina, UCLA, Indiana, Connecticut and Arizona all missed the cut. And don't you love those TV shots of schools making the tournament? East Tennessee State is seeded 16th and will have its doors blown off by Kentucky. They celebrated live on CBS by jumping up and down, with one of the players dancing around and grabbing his crotch. Touching....so to speak.

The latest twist in personal seat licenses. In Boston, at Jerry Remy’s Sports Bar & Grill near Fenway Park, $500. guarantees you a "season ticket" for Red Sox games. You pay to watch the games on TV. I'm thinking of selling PSL's in my basement. Anyone?

5. The Miami Of The North

Fascinating piece in the New York Times yesterday about Red Badge of Courage author Stephen Crane, who went to my alma mater in the 1890's. He said he went to Syracuse University "more to play baseball than study." What an oddball. Baseball over books? What about the sororities and the keg parties? What was wrong with that guy?
