    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, February 19

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Harvard plays host to Cornell, while the Nuggets visit the Wizards, and the Mavericks seek a road victory over the Magic.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up a busy schedule of 12 games for Friday, including Dallas at Orlando. The Mavericks (33-21 SU, 22-32 ATS) knocked off the Suns in their last game on Wednesday, winning by a final score of 107-97 at home. Dirk Nowitzki led the way with 28 points and seven rebounds in that victory for the Mavs, while Jason Kidd was good for 18 points and 10 assists. The Magic (37-18 SU, 27-25-3 ATS) topped the Pistons 116-91 on Wednesday, with Dwight Howard picking up 33 points and 17 boards in the home win. Vince Carter was good for 20 points.

Also on the NBA hardwood on Friday: Cleveland at Charlotte, San Antonio at Philadelphia, Chicago at Minnesota, Toronto at New Jersey, Milwaukee at Detroit, Miami at Memphis, Indiana at New Orleans, Atlanta at Phoenix, Utah at Golden State, Boston at Portland, and Denver at Washington. The Wizards (18-33 SU, 21-30 ATS) found an even worse team to beat on Wednesday night, getting past the Timberwolves 108-99 at home. Andray Blatche had 33 points for Washington, which has now traded away both Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison.

As well, the top matchups on the light college basketball schedule for Friday are Old Dominion at Northern Iowa, William & Mary at Iona, and Cornell at Harvard. The Big Red (21-4 SU, 13-7 ATS) got past Princeton 48-45 last time out, getting 13 points from Ryan Wittman in the victory. The Crimson (17-5 SU, 8-7 ATS) have won three straight games, knocking off Brown 81-67 last game. Kyle Casey poured in 27 points for Harvard in that contest. Cornell leads the Ivy League conference standings at 7-1 on the season, while Harvard sits with a 6-2 record.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, preliminary action continues at the Olympic men's hockey tournament on Friday, with Belarus vs. Sweden, Finland vs. Germany, and the Czech Republic vs. Latvia. Finland got past Belarus 5-1 in their opener on Wednesday, while Sweden beat Germany 2-0, and the Czech Republic knocked off the rival Slovaks 3-1. Jaromir Jagr, Patrik Elias, and Tomas Plekanec had the goals for the Czech Republic in that victory, while Tomas Vokoun stopped 34 of 35 shots.

Bettor's best friend: Today's wagering tips

      Friday, February 19

      Lines off the board

Toronto Raptors at New Jersey Nets – Chris Bosh (ankle) will miss Friday’s game after injuring his ankle in Wednesday’s loss to Memphis.

Miami Heat at Memphis Grizzlies – Dwayne Wade (calf) left Thursday’s game in the first quarter and is doubtful. Jermaine O’Neal (back) is questionable.

Boston Celtics at Portland Trail Blazers – Brandon Roy (hamstring) only played 15 minutes on Tuesday before leaving the game and is questionable.

Lines to keep an eye on

The William & Mary at Iona total can be found anywhere from 121.5 to 123. The W&M Tribe have played to the under in their last nine games.

The total for the Old Dominion-Northern Iowa game opened at 110.5 and is currently listed as high as 112.5.

      Who’s hot

Old Dominion has won eight of its last 10 games, going 5-5 ATS during that time frame, and is getting points Friday.

Harvard is 8-2 overall in its last 10 and 8-1 straight up at home this season.

      Who’s not

San Antonio is 2-5 ATS in its last seven games.

The Brown Bears have dropped eight of their last 10 games, going 3-5 ATS in that span.

      Key stats

29 – Number of different starting lineups the Warriors have used in 53 games this season. Golden State has lost 280 games due to players’ injuries and currently have four players on its roster who did not participate in the team’s training camp.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

No. 24-ranked Northern Iowa will again be without center Jordan Eglseder in the featured matchup versus Old Dominion on Friday. Eglseder was suspended by the team for three games after an OWI arrest. He is the team’s second-leading scorer at 12.2 points per and pulls down more than seven boards a game. The Panthers had no trouble taking care of Creighton without him on Wednesday, winning 70-52 as 8.5-point favorites.

      Game of the day

Boston Celtics at Portland Trail Blazers

      Notable quotable

"On paper it looks that way. Just like any team that makes a major trade like that, it's gonna take some time for that team to get that rhythm and get comfortable with each other. I looks like it can help them, but you still gotta play."

-- Portland head coach Nate McMillan on the Mavericks becoming a better team after the acquisitions of Caron Butler and Brendan Haywood.

      Tips and notes

      - The Wizards are completely rebuilding and Mike Miller described it as the “Extreme Makeover Team Edition.” A less than star-studded starting five took the floor Wednesday and defeated Minnesota, getting inspired play from Antawn Jamison’s replacement, Andray Blatche. Blatche had 33 points and 13 boards and the team may begin to rally around their season’s torment.

      - Corey Maggette didn’t get his wish to be traded but will not be playing for the Warriors any time soon. Maggette earlier said the team had “no chemistry whatsoever.” Golden State will be shorthanded again with Maggette out but the team has thrived in similar situations this season. The Warriors defeated Dallas on the road in November with seven players.

      - Marcus Camby could be jetlagged when he takes the floor in a Trail Blazers uniform Friday. His former team, the Clippers, played in Portland Tuesday and Camby only brought one change of clothes. He was given the day off Wednesday to fly back to L.A. and collect his belongings. Camby arrived back in Oregon that night and could start Friday.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dallas Mavericks at Orlando Magic (-6, 201)

It might not seem like a big injury, but the Mavs are going to miss center Erick Dampier. Sure, newly acquired big man Brendan Haywood will eat up the starter’s minutes, but who’s his back up now?
          Tim Thomas? Eduardo Najera?

Neither of those two guys can guard an elite big man like Dwight Howard. The Mavs will be in a bad spot if Haywood picks up two quick fouls guarding Howard.

Caron Butler seems to be fitting in well with his new team. The former All-Star gives Dallas another perimeter player (Shawn Marion is the other) who can provide above average defense. Of course, he’s also a below average shooting player, especially at the two-guard.

Look for the Magic to earn a win over the up-and-down Mavericks.

          Pick: Magic

Atlanta Hawks at Phoenix Suns (-3.5, 212)

Is there a more depressing team in the NBA than the Phoenix Suns? Yeah, they are exciting to watch but everyone knows they’re a first-round exit waiting to happen in the playoffs.

Phoenix played chicken with Cleveland on a trade involving Amare Stoudemire and lost. Now the team is stuck in limbo until he opts out of his contract in the offseason.

The Suns still love to run but that won’t be wise against the Hawks. Atlanta is at its best creating turnovers and getting fast-break baskets.

          Pick: Hawks

Game of the day: Celtics at Trail Blazers
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Celtics at Portland Trail Blazers

            Help’s on the way

The Blazers (32-24) destroyed the Clippers in their first game back from the All-Star break, 109-87, and they did it without Marcus Camby, who watched in street clothes from the Portland bench after being acquired in a trade with the Clips earlier in the day.

Camby, the No. 2 rebounder in the NBA, was picked up in the deal that sent guard Steve Blake and injured forward Travis Outlaw to the Clips. With centers Greg Oden and Joel Przybilla lost for the season to injuries, the need for Camby was evident Tuesday night.

“At times, (the Clippers) got to the basket fairly easy,” head coach Nate McMillan said. “What (Camby) brings to the floor, we are missing — a guy who will rotate and defend the basket as well as rebound and block shots. That’s his strength. I’m looking forward to getting him out there.”

Camby is likely to suit up as a Blazer for the first time on Friday, but All-Star guard Brandon Roy is questionable. Roy played in the first half against the Clippers, but sat out the second half due to tightness in his right hamstring that had caused him to miss 15 of the previous 16 games.

Roy sounded afterward as if he may decide to sit out an extended period of time to heal the leg.

“I feel like I’m probably going to need to stop playing for awhile,” said Roy, “It’s hard to get a rhythm. I was more concerned about (making) the move than shooting the basketball. If I’m thinking that much about playing, it’s not worth being out there.”

McMillan said on Thursday that no decision had been made on Roy’s availability for Friday against Boston.

“We have days to give him some time, and we’ll do that,” he said.

            No tea party

The Celtics are playing their second straight road game after a trip to face the Lakers last night.

The Celtics are 1-4 ATS in their last five games playing on zero days rest so it will be interesting to see how they respond in their second of a back-to-back road game when visiting Portland on Friday.

Boston has been rumored among trade talks that are mainly surrounding Ray Allen and Eddie House.

Celts GM Danny Ainge is looking to pump life into a team that’s lost its luster and edge and did just that Thursday by acquiring the tumultuous Nate Robinson from the Knicks in exchange for House.

House was well-liked by his teammates and played a positive role in the locker room. You have to wonder if Robinson will rub some veteran Celtics the wrong way.

Allen, meanwhile, is determined to prove that he still has game and that he’s still a key part of a championship contending team. Entering Thursday’s game, Allen is averaging 16.0 points over 49 games and is shooting just 33.8 percent from long range.

Last season Allen averaged 18.2 ppg while hitting over 40 percent from beyond the arc.

The Big Three, for the first time in two months, are healthy at the same time. Paul Pierce rested his strained left foot while in Dallas, and Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy should receive a couple of thank you cards from Celtics fans for only playing All-Stars Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett a combined 24 minutes.

Without Garnett and Pierce at full strength, the Celtics were just a shadow of the team they had envisioned they’d be.

“We lost games we wished we had back,’’ Allen said. “We made mistakes we wished we hadn’t made. Our eyes are not off what our goal is. We still feel optimistic and everybody has a desire to win. That’s what we’re working on. That’s what our focus is.’’

            Head-to-head

These two met in Boston back on Jan. 22. All-Star Kevin Garnett made his return from a knee injury while Blazers’ Roy was sidelined with a hamstring injury.

Garnett gave Boston’s front line a major boost and the Celts outscored Portland in the paint, 56-32.

Portland won its home meeting with the Celts last season to end a seven-game losing streak against Boston. Boston’s win in January extended its streak to eight wins in the last nine meetings between these two clubs. The C's have covered the number in seven of those nine games.

            Key stats

            Average point differential
            Boston: +5.0
            Portland: +2.6

            Field goal percentage differential
            Boston: +3.9
            Portland: +0.2

            Rebounding differential
            Boston: -0.7
            Portland: +2.1

Trends (relevant before Boston’s game with Los Angeles)

Boston is just 1-9-1 ATS in its last 11 vs. Western Conference but 5-2 ATS in its last seven vs. NBA Northwest with five straight up victories this season – Portland, Utah, Minnesota (twice) and Oklahoma City.

Portland is 4-0 ATS in its last four vs. Eastern Conference but, as mentioned above, struggle against Boston. The Blazers are just 1-4 ATS in the last five home games against the Celtics.
