Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Carolina Hurricanes at Calgary Flames (-175, 5.5)

The Flames will put all six of their newly-acquired players on the ice Wednesday to see if they can pull the team out of a slump after losing 10 of its last 11 games.

The four players attained from Toronto in the Dion Phaneuf trade made their debut Sunday but couldn’t get the Flames a victory, losing to New Jersey 3-0.

Forwards Ales Kotalik and Christopher Higgins will be thrust into action Wednesday to try and find an offensive spark. Calgary is averaging 1.4 goals per game during its last 10 losses.

"You try and build chemistry, and get used to tendencies of the guys you're playing with. It doesn't just happen," said Matt Stajan after Sunday's game. "You start to get a feel, but it wasn't there tonight."

Don’t expect all these players to mesh right away and the task will be even greater against Carolina goalie Cam Ward who is 4-1 with a 1.80 goals-against average in the team’s last five games.

      Pick: Hurricanes

Ottawa Senators at Buffalo Sabres (-140, 5.5)

During the Senators’ nine-game winning streak, goalie Brian Elliott has been absolutely out of his mind.

Elliott started in seven of those nine Ottawa wins and only gave up two goals twice during that span. He boasted a goals-against average of 1.14 and dazzling .960 save rate in those seven wins.

Prior to the 5-4 loss the Sabres endured Monday against Pittsburgh that saw Sid the Kid earn yet another hat trick, Buffalo had been playing some decent defense.

The Sabres had played three straight unders, allowing a total of four goals in those games.

Ottawa has won seven straight in this series and that trend will probably continue, but the safer play will be the expected shortage of goals.

      Pick: Under

Pucking the trends: New-look Leafs have under value
        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Pacific pride

Heading into Tuesday’s action, the Pacific division has an overall record of 152-90-35 and all five teams are within five points of a playoff spot.

"It's not been any secret that the five years that we've been here, the division that we play in is one of the toughest in hockey," Ducks coach Randy Carlyle told the Orange County Register. "The Sharks have been there. We were fortunate enough to have our spot there also. And now you see the emergence of L.A. and Phoenix.”

Division leading San Jose hasn’t lost in regulation in 10 games, Phoenix and Los Angeles have won four and six in a row respectively and the Ducks have won eight in a row at home.

        Under-standing Toronto’s trades

The Maple Leafs traded away four of their top eight scorers (Niklas Hagman, Matt Stajan, Jason Blake and Ian White), received a good penalty killer in Fredrik Sjostrom, and an upgrade in net (J.S. Giguere).

Brian Burke is trying to create a defense first mentality for the Leafs.

“In my mind, we build from the net out,” Burke told the Toronto Star. “If you don't have good defencemen, you're not going to win. It doesn't matter how good your forwards are. It's been a hallmark of all my teams, build through defense.”

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ over-under record of 28-26-2 is nothing special, but it’s worth noting that every game Toronto has played this season (except against the Devils) has had a total of at least 6.

        Return of the Wings?

Ansar Khan of Michiganlive.com points out that the Detroit Red Wings are finally getting healthy.

Niklas Kronwall, Jason Williams and Tomas Holmstrom have returned to the lineup, and Johan Franzen will be back after the Olympics.

“When we got our team together and are at the top of our game. We got the makings of a real good team,” Detroit GM Ken Holland told reporters.

ESPN’s Victoria Matiash points out the Detroit Red Wings are averaging about one goal scored per game less than last year. The Wings have an over/under record of 19-33-3.

        Log jam in the East

In the Eastern Conference, eight teams fighting for three playoff spots are separated by five or less points.

Of those eight teams (Philadelphia, New York Rangers, Florida, Atlanta, Boston, Montreal, Tampa Bay and the New York Islanders), the Florida Panthers have the best record over their last 10 games at 6-3-1).

Panthers goaltender Tomas Vokoun was named the NHL’s first star for January and forward David Booth recently returned from injury.

"You forget how much he (Booth) brings to the table for us, his speed, how he backs other teams off, how he creates offense and gets pucks at the net," coach Pete DeBoer told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

At 5Dimes, odds on those eight teams to win the Stanley Cup range from +3000 on the Flyers to +12000 on the Panthers.

        On the Schedule

Wednesday Feb. 3 – Detroit Red Wings at Anaheim Ducks

Detroit plays at Pittsburgh, at San Jose and at Anaheim over a span of four days. Wednesday’s game is against a Ducks team that has won eight in a row at home.

Saturday Feb. 6 – Carolina Hurricanes at New York Islanders

A trip through Alberta and a trip through New York…all in the same week. The Canes play four games in six days this week, the final two coming Friday in Buffalo and Saturday on Long Island.

Saturday Feb. 6 – Phoenix Coyotes at Dallas Stars

The Coyotes will have to go into the United Center on Friday to face the Blackhawks and then play a Stars team on Saturday that has an excellent home record.

DePaul Blue Demons at Marquette Golden Eagles [ESPN2 | 7:00 PM ET]

Blue Demons: DePaul has lost 9 of their past 10 games SU, with their lone win coming against Marquette. It seems like long ago that the Blue Demons were 5-1 SU, as they currently stand at 8-13 SU. DePaul is 9-7-1 ATS, thanks to 4 consecutive wins ATS as the listed double digit underdog. DePaul is 5-3-1 ATS away from home this season, including both true road games and neutral court games. The Blue Demons are 7-5-1 ATS as the listed underdog this entire season. Despite their recent ATS success, DePaul is struggling to score as they've been held to 57 PTS or fewer in 4 of their past 5 games. G Will Walker is the offensive catalyst for the Blue Demons, as he averages a team high 16.3 PPG. C Mac Koshwal has returned to the lineup, as he is the 2nd leading scorer for Depaul averaging 13.4 PPG along with a team high 10 RPG. DePaul will be looking to shorten the game, as they've held opponents to 67 PTS or fewer in 4 of their past 5 games.

DePaul is 4-0 ATS last 4 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
Under is 5-0 last 5 games following a SU loss.

                    Key Injuries - None.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 51

Golden Eagles (-17.5, O/U 127): Revenge will clearly be on the minds of Marquette tonight, as they were shocked last month 50-51 against Depaul. Marquette was a 13 point favorite in that game, and were caught looking ahead to Syracuse in SU defeat. Marquette is 13-8 SU and 10-5 ATS this season. The Golden Eagles are 10-2 SU and 4-2 ATS at home this season. Marquette is 2-2 ATS as a double digit favorite this year. Marquette has bounced back a bit after losing 5 of 7 games SU earlier this year, winning their 1st road game of the season against UCONN in their last game. The Golden Eagles have scored at least 70 PTS in 5 of their past 6 games. F Lazar Hayward leads Marquette in scoring, averaging 18.1 PPG this season. Hayward also leads the Golden Eagles in rebounds, averaging 7.5 RPG. G Jimmy Butler averages 15 PPG while shooting better than 57% from the field.

Marquette is 6-1 ATS last 7 vs. Big East.
Under is 5-0 last 5 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400.

Key Injuries - F Jeronne Maymon (personal) is out.
C Chris Otule (foot) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 70 (UNDER - Total of the Day)

Kansas Jayhawks at Colorado Buffaloes [ESPN2 | 9:00 PM ET]

Jayhawks (-13, O/U 150.5): Kansas is back at #1 in the nation, as they are an impressive 20-1 SU this season. Since their loss at Tennessee, the Jayhawks have won 6 straight games SU. That includes an overtime thriller in their last game at Kansas St. The Jayhawks are 9-8-1 ATS this season, including 3-4-1 ATS away from home. Kansas is 8-6-1 ATS as a double digit favorite this season, having only played 3 of their 21 games as a single digit favorite. The Jayhawks have 4 players averaging double figures in PTS, with C Cole Aldrich perhaps the hottest Jayhawk of them all. Aldrich averages nearly 12 PPG, along with a team high 10 RPG this season. G Sherron Collins leads the team in scoring and assists, with 15.5 PPG and 4.1 APG respectively. As a team, Kansas averages nearly 85 PPG this season. Defensively, the Jayhawks have only allowed 5 of their 21 opponents to score 70 PTS or more this season.

Jayhawks are 8-1-1 ATS last 10 games following an ATS loss.
Under is 5-1 last 6 vs. a team with a winning SU record.

                    Key Injuries - None.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 77

Buffaloes: Colorado has lost 4 of their last 5 games SU, including a home loss to Kansas St. That home loss was significant, as it remains the Buffaloes only loss at home this season. Colorado is 11-10 SU this season, with a home record of 10-1 SU. Colorado is 4-2-1 ATS at home this season, and have yet to lose ATS as the listed home underdog. The Buffaloes are 5-4-1 ATS as the listed underdog for the entire season. Colorado has lost the past 13 contests against Kansas, so they will be excited for tonight's home matchup. The Buffaloes average more than 75 PPG, but have been held under that total in each of their past 3 games. G Cory Higgins leads the Buffaloes in scoring with 18.3 PPG this season. G Alec Burks is the only other player averaging more than 10 PPG for Colorado, and both Burke and Higgins shoot better than 50% from the field. Colorado needs to improve their rebounding, as they are the worst rebounding team in the Big 12.

Buffaloes are 5-1-1 ATS last 7 games vs. a team with a winning SU record.
Under is 5-0 last 5 vs. a team with a winning SU record.

Key Injuries - F Keegan Hornbuckle (shoulder) is questionable.
G Alec Burks (knee) is questionable

PROJECTED SCORE: 71 (Side of the Day)

                          Len’s Top Five

                          Wednesday, February 3

Happy Wednesday everyone, here's my Top 5 for February 3, 2010 from Len Berman.

                          1. Quick Hits

Super Bowl media day has come and gone. Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney said he still hopes to play Sunday despite a torn ligament in his ankle.
The Colts will begin contract negotiations with quarterback Peyton Manning after the season. He's expected to become the highest paid player in NFL history.
In a jailhouse interview, former Giant Plaxico Burress tells CBS that he will play again in the NFL.
The Jets fined coach Rex Ryan $50-thousand for flipping the bird to Dolphin fans. The NFL could take additional action.

                          2. And The Envelope Please

Sports movies did quite well in the Oscar nominations announced yesterday. The Blind Side was nominated for Best Picture. Sandra Bullock for Best Actress. And Invictus, that was just a rugby movie, right? Morgan Freeman for Best Actor and Matt Damon for Supporting Actor. In case you are wondering, lots of sports movies have received nominations over the years from Raging Bull to Field of Dreams to Seabiscuit. But only 3 sports movies have won Best Picture. Rocky, 1976, Chariots of Fire, 1981 and Million Dollar Baby, 2004. Interesting. 2 boxing movies and track and field.

                          3. National Pastime

When it comes to the most popular sport in America, boxing and track don't even register. The winner is a slam dunk, and it ain't basketball. According to the Harris Poll, pro football is the favorite sport of 35% of those polled who follow sports. Baseball is a distant second at 16%. And when you figure college football is third at 12%, football beats baseball 47% to 16%! Here's the troubling part for baseball. In 1985 pro football beat baseball 24%-23%. Since then football has soared and baseball has dropped like a rock. Those late World Series games, not to mention strikes and steroids, have certainly taken their toll on a generation of sports fans.

                          4. Sweet Lou

I had the honor of emceeing the 30th Thurman Munson Awards dinner last night in Manhattan. Among the honorees were Joba Chamberlain, Darryl Strawberry and Lou Piniella. Despite being Cubs manager, Piniella wears his 1977 Yankee championship ring. At one point during dinner, Lou said to me "you know we're lucky." When I looked at him quizzically he said "my 3 best friends from my Yankee years are all gone. Thurman, Bobby Murcer, and Catfish Hunter." Pretty sobering.

                          5. Making an Impression

Talk about wearing your heart on your sleeve. Manchester City soccer fan, Chris Atkinson, was so excited that his team was going to sign Brazilian soccer star Kaka, that he had Kaka tattooed on his chest. Kaka never signed with Manchester. But another Brazilian star did, Robinho. So, off to the tattoo parlor he went. Now he has Kaka and Robinho among his roughly 25 tattoos. But alas, Robinho has skipped town to play elsewhere. Atkinson is rather bummed, but he's got a solution. He says when he has kids some day, he'll name them Kaka and Robinho. That may take a while. Shockingly, he currently doesn't have a girlfriend.

Happy Birthday: Boxer Emile Griffith. 72.
Bonus Birthday: Actress Isla Fisher (Wedding Crashers) who's engaged to that Borat guy. 34.

Today in Sports: The Yankees name a former intern, 31 year old Brian Cashman, general manager. 1998.
Bonus Event: Got a buck? The first paper money is issued in Massachusetts to pay soldiers. 1690.
