    Daily Sports Roundup

    Wednesday, February 3

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Nuggets play host to the Suns, Pittsburgh takes on West Virginia, and the top-ranked Jayhawks meet Colorado.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up a busy slate of 11 games on Wednesday, including Phoenix at Denver. The Suns (29-21 SU, 26-23-1 ATS) picked up a 109-100 win in New Orleans in their last game on Monday, with Amare Stoudemire pouring in a team-high 25 points in the contest. Steve Nash scored 18 points to go along with 12 assists on the night. The Nuggets (33-15 SU, 22-24-2 ATS) edged Sacramento 112-109 at home in OT in their last game Monday. Kenyon Martin had 24 points and 12 boards in that victory, while Carmelo Anthony sat out with an ankle injury.

Also on the NBA hardwood on Wednesday: Chicago at Philadelphia, the Clippers at Atlanta, New Jersey at Toronto, Washington at New York, Oklahoma City at New Orleans, Golden State at Dallas, Portland at Utah, San Antonio at Sacramento, Charlotte at the Lakers, and Miami at Boston. The Heat (24-24 SU, 23-24-1 ATS) fell 97-81 to Milwaukee in their last game on Monday, with Dwyane Wade tossing in 23 points. The Celtics (30-16 SU, 19-26-1 ATS) knocked off Washington 99-88 on Monday, with Kevin Garnett scoring 19 points in the victory.

There is one ranked matchup on the college basketball schedule for Wednesday, with No. 22 Pittsburgh at No. 6 West Virginia. The Panthers (16-5 SU, 10-7-2 ATS) fell 70-61 to South Florida in their last game on Sunday, with Gilbert Brown scoring 25 points in the loss. The Mountaineers (17-3 SU, 7-12 ATS) knocked off Louisville 77-74 on Saturday, with Da'Sean Butler scoring 27 points in that win.

Other games involving ranked teams on Wednesday: Penn State at No. 13 Ohio State, South Florida at No. 7 Georgetown, Duquesne at No. 19 Temple, Iowa State at No. 20 Baylor, Mississippi State at No. 18 Vanderbilt, Wichita State at No. 24 Northern Iowa, and No. 1 Kansas at Colorado. The Jayhawks (20-1 SU, 9-8-1 ATS) got back to the top spot in the rankings with an 81-79 overtime win over Kansas State on Saturday. Cole Aldrich had 18 points for Kansas that day.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are five games on the NHL's schedule for Wednesday, with St. Louis at Chicago, Carolina at Calgary, Philadelphia at Edmonton, Detroit at Anaheim, and Ottawa at Buffalo. The 31-21-4 Senators head into Wednesday's divisional matchup riding a nine-game winning streak. Ottawa beat the Canadiens 3-2 in their last game on Saturday afternoon. The 32-15-7 Sabres will be looking to bounce back from a 5-4 loss to the Penguins in their Monday matchup. Ryan Miller gave up five goals on 31 shots for the Sabres in that defeat.

Bettors best friend: Today's wagering tips

      Wednesday, February 3

      Lines off the board

New Jersey Nets at Toronto Raptors – Hedo Turkoglu (eye) and DeMar DeRozan (ankle) both missed Tuesday’s game and are questionable.

Los Angeles Clippers at Atlanta Hawks – Chris Kaman (ankle) had missed the last two games but played Tuesday versus Chicago.

Washington Wizards at New York Knicks – Al Harrington (knee) has missed the last two games and is questionable.

Miami Heat at Boston Celtics – Jermaine O’Neal (back) did not play Monday and is questionable. Paul Pierce (foot) did not play in the fourth quarter of Monday’s game and is questionable.

Golden State Warriors at Dallas Mavericks – Corey Maggette (hip) is questionable.

San Antonio Spurs at Sacramento Kings – Tyreke Evans (hip) did not play Monday and is probable. Tony Parker (ankle) has missed the last two games and is questionable.

Phoenix Suns at Denver Nuggets – Carmelo Anthony (ankle) has missed last three games and is questionable.

Lines to keep an eye on

The Bulls-76ers game opened as a pick ‘em but has jumped to Philly laying 1.5 points out of the gate. Chicago has won five straight SU and ATS going into Tuesday's game but is 3-7 SU and ATS in back-to-back games this season.

      Who’s hot

Charlotte 49ers have won five straight and four in a row ATS.

The Jazz have won 11 of their last 13 and are 10-1-2 ATS during that span.

      Who’s not

The Mavericks have lost four straight ATS and are 2-10 ATS in their last 12 games.

Joe Thornton has five points in his last six games with three shots on goal.

      Key stat

17.3 – Average number of rebounds the Knicks have been out-boarded by in their last three games. Minnesota beat them on the glass Sunday by 22 rebounds and New York has been out-rebounded 169-117 over its last three games.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Paul Pierce could miss Wednesday’s game versus the Heat and more after injuring his foot during Monday’s game. Pierce returned after the injury and played 17 minutes but sat out the entire fourth quarter. Pierce is scheduled to have X-rays on the foot Wednesday and some reports have said it is broken. Pierce is the Celtics leading scorer this season at 18.9 ppg and the team went 2-3 SU and ATS in five games without him earlier this year.

      Game of the day

Pittsburgh Panthers at West Virginia Mountaineers (-7.5, 125.5)

      Notable quotable

"Someone just asked me who my favorite Kardashian sister was. I wouldn't know how to answer that one."

-- Saints wide receiver Marques Colston replied when asked what the most ridiculous question he had been asked during Super Bowl media day.

      Tips and notes

      - UNC-Wilmington coach Benny Moss was relieved of his duties last week. Many thought this change would create more cohesion within the offense as Moss was quick to pull players in and out of the game. The Seahawks did not respond with that expected effort Saturday, scoring just 53 points and losing to Towson at home as 7.5-point favorites.

      - Prior to Boston’s come-from-behind win versus Washington Monday, the Celtics had dropped three straight. Kevin Garnett said after the third loss, “It’s motivation and we’ll figure a way to come out of it.” Paul Pierce sat the entire fourth quarter against the Wizards and Boston was still able to come back so maybe “motivation” has kicked in.

      - The Spurs have won seven straight regular season games in Sacramento. During the last six games of that streak, however, San Antonio has only won by an average margin of 4.5 points. Four of those six games were decided by three points or less and San Antonio went 2-4 ATS.

        Six-pack for Wednesday

The six worst minor league farm systems LY, in terms of wins/losses

        30) Houston Astros, 320-442

        29) New York Mets, 338-412

        28) Toronto Blue Jays, 312-379

        27) Cincinnati Reds, 314-374

        26) Arizona Diamondbacks, 336-376

        25) Baltimore Orioles, 367-390

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a snowy day.......

        13) So Michael Vick says he is a top 10 QB in the NFL; by my count, he could start right now for only seven teams, six sorry teams and one that just had a Hall of Fame signal caller retire:

        Cardinals-Bills-Panthers-Browns-Raiders-Rams-49ers

The other 25 teams have a better QB, one of similar ability or have young quarterback they've committed to. No way is he a top 10 quarterback.

        12) JJ Putz was 1-4, 5.22 in 29 games for the Mets LY, then left for year with an injured elbow, which apparently was already damaged before his trade from Seattle, but the Mets never gave him a physical after the trade, which is further evidence that the Mets' front office is incompetent.

        11) Mets gave up Mike Carp (1B), Endy Chavez (OF), Aaron Heilman (P) in the deal; what do they need now, other than a catcher? They didn't have to trade for Matthews if they had Chavez, they desperately need a 1B (Carp hit .315 in cameo for Mariners LY), and Heilman could've been a starting pitcher, only they never gave him a chance. I'm just saying......

        10) By the way, Seattle cleaned up on this trade, which was a three-way deal with Cleveland; Mariners dumped Putz' sore arm and got Franklin Gutierrez, who hit .286 with 18 HRs, 70 RBI in a pitcher's park, all for the princely salary of $455,000. Superior trade by Seattle.

        9) Think anyone at Iowa State is asking Greg McDermott why it was that Wesley Johnson left the Cyclones and went to Syracuse? Johnson is one of the best players in America; Iowa State had him and he got away, and that is why coaches get fired. Cyclones don't get many All-Americans.

        8) Two of my most overrated things in this country- Punxatawney Phil and Niagara Falls. Tuesday was Phil's big day-- for some reason, media gives the chunky rodent a ton of publicity, when everyone knows damn well there's going to be at least six more weeks of winter. Please go away.

        7) Niagara Falls, if you've never been there, is a large waterfall, which is impressive for like five minutes, until you realize that its a lot of water going over a lot of rocks, and not much else. The Canadian side is better than the American side, and there are casinos on both sides, so they have that going for them, but actual waterfall? Not sure what the big deal is.

        6) Saints are only NFL team that ran a kickoff back for a TD on first play in franchise history. John Gilliam did it-- he went on to be a terrific WR for the Vikings in the 70's.

        5) Interesting to see how Turkish import Deniz Kilicli does in his debut for West Virginia tonight; he is 6-9, supposedly the best low post player Mountaineers have and he's itching to play after being suspended for 20 games by another stupid NCAA rule that says if you play overseas with a pro player, then you're ineligible, even if you didn't get paid.

        4) Mississippi State is 1-2 in SEC road games; all three games were won by exactly five points. Bulldogs are at Vanderbilt Wednesday night.

        3) Memo to Bear fans; Jay Cutler won't be calling audibles. Quarterbacks in Martz Madness aren't allowed to change the play at line of scrimmage, one of the many quirks of Martz, who is a brilliant developer of QBs, but who has also had trouble getting along with coaches on his same staff.

        2) Brutal night for Michigan State hoops; worse than losing for first time in Big 11 play, a dismal, one-sided loss at Wisconsin, is point guard Lucas going down with what looked like an ugly ankle sprain. 40 days left until Selection Sunday-- his ankle needs to be healthy, or Spartans are screwed.

        1) Wednesday is biggest day of college football's offseason-- Signing Day, and ESPNU has nine hours of coverage. Normally, this would be a terrific day to lay on the couch and take notes, but I'm conserving days off for a Las Vegas trip next month, so we'll report on the action tomorrow night.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Today's best NBA bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Chicago Bulls at Philadelphia 76ers (-1, 194)

The Bulls are cooling the hot seat under coach Vinny Del Negro one win at a time and it all begins with point guard Derrick Rose.

Rose started the season playing hurt, but his production has increased month by month. In November, Rose averaged 16.2 points and 5.3 assists per game. Those numbers jumped a few points in December (20.4 ppg, 6.1 apg) and escalated to 23.1 points and 6.4 assists per outing in January.

"It all starts with Derrick Rose," Joakim Noah said. "He's just playing huge for us, making the right decisions, staying aggressive offensively. When your point guard is playing like that, it usually leads to good things."

The first three months of the season on the road were hard on Chicago, going 3-11 overall. But during their recent seven-game road trip, the baby Bulls went 5-2 straight up and against the spread.

Chicago is the hottest team in the NBA after five consecutive SU and ATS wins (all underdogs) and even in a back-to-back situation Wednesday, the Bulls have the confidence to handle a semi-short road trip to Philly.

                Pick: Bulls

San Antonio Spurs at Sacramento Kings (N/A)

The Spurs open an eight-game road trip in Sac-Town Wednesday and a few weeks away from the Riverwalk might be exactly what Greg Popovich’s team needs.

"Everyone's excited to get on the road and get a little bit of a rhythm going," Richard Jefferson said after the team dropped four of its last six games, all at home.

All-star Tony Parker has missed the last two contests and will be out for this one as well, but reserve George Hill has stepped up in Parker’s absence. In two starts, Hill has averaged 17.5 points per game.

The Spurs have won seven straight in this series (4-2-1 ATS) and seven of their last eight games in Sacramento.

The Kings played well without Rookie of the Year frontrunner Tyreke Evans on Tuesday, but blew a 17-point third-quarter lead against the Nuggets and lost in overtime.

Evans is expected to return for this game but since Kevin Martin returned from injury and rejoined Evans on the floor (Jan. 15), the Kings are 1-8 overall and 2-7 ATS.

                Pick: Spurs

NBA Top 5: The best over/under trends in 2010

You weren't the only one making resolutions on New Year's Eve.

It seems some teams in the NBA have also committed to improving their style in 2010. Some teams' resolutions may have been to play at a quicker pace, while others appear to have focused on tightening up defensively.

Here's a look at the NBA's top over/under team trends since the calendar turned.

                  Washington Wizards (5-12 over/under since Jan. 1)

There haven't been many shootouts at the Verizon Center lately - outside of the Wizards' locker room, at least. (Insert laugh track here).

Since Gilbert Arenas' infamous gun-toting showdown with teammate Javaris Crittenton on Christmas Eve, the Wizards have been struggling to put the ball in the basket. Washington has eclipsed the 100-point plateau only three times in its last 12 games.

Those scoring woes were evident once again in the Wizards' last game, a 99-88 loss to the Boston Celtics Monday. Washington carried a four-point lead into the fourth quarter before making only two of 18 field-goal attempts in the final frame.

Hoisting bad, contested jumpers has been a season-long problem for the Wiz. The issue hasn’t slowed down with Arenas, a notorious chunker, out of the lineup.

                  Portland Trail Blazers (11-5)

Oddsmakers overcompensated for injuries Portland endured over the past month.

Despite being without star guard Brandon Roy (hamstring) and others for much of January, the Trail Blazers have gone over the total in six of their last seven games and 11 of their 16 contests last month.

Scoring from LaMarcus Aldridge, Jerryd Bayless and even the antiquated Andre Miller (52 points Saturday against the Mavericks) has been a factor. But so have the books, who haven't posted a total over 196 in any of the Blazers' past 16 games - likely wary of Portland's fourth-ranked defense.

                  Sacramento Kings (5-11)

The return of Kevin Martin to the Kings' lineup was supposed to spark Sac-Town’s offense. Instead, the Kings have been scuffling since the shooting guard returned last month from a broken wrist injury.

Eleven of the last 16 Sacramento games have gone under the total, and the numbers could have been even more extreme. Two of the Kings' games went over by a point, while their 112-109 loss Monday in Denver would have gone under if the game hadn't gone to overtime.

Martin averaged only 17 points per game in January, a far cry from his 24.6 average last season.

The total has been posted at 200 or higher in 18 of the Kings' past 20 games due to Sacramento's 27th-ranked defense.

                  Charlotte Bobcats (11-6)

The Charlotte attack has made a lot of progress since opening the regular season with a 59-point effort in Boston.

Larry Brown's Bobcats still rank 28th in offense, but they've been setting the nets on fire of late. Charlotte has scored 100-plus points in six of its last 10 games, thanks largely to offensive-minded forward Stephen Jackson.

The Bobcats' strong defense (second in points against) generally keeps totals in the low 190s or lower, adding value for over bettors.

                  Philadelphia 76ers (4-11)

First-year Philly coach Eddie Jordan continues to struggle finding an offensive game plan that will work for the Sixers.

Jordan has tried many different lineups and rotations this season, all with little success. Even the midseason acquisition of Allen Iverson hasn't been The Answer.

The Sixers have failed to score 100 points in regulation time in 10 of their last 11 games. Not coincidentally, 10 of those 11 games went under the total.

Oddsmakers still seem to respect the Sixers’ offense, however. Only five of Philly's 47 games this season have had posted totals of lower than 190.

                          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the day: Pittsburgh at West Virginia
                          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Panthers at West Virginia Mountaineers (-7.5, 125.5)

Pitt travels to West Virginia with lots on the line for both schools. Anything we learn from this game can get put to reasonably quick use: the second game in the home-and-home series goes Feb. 12 in Pittsburgh.

                          Missin’ Dixon?

The price on this game could be affected by Jermaine Dixon’s ankle. The status and health of Pitt’s shutdown defender is on everyone’s mind. Dixon sat out Sunday’s 70-61 loss against South Florida.

USF junior Dominique Jones tallied 37 points with Travon Woodall – Dixon’s replacement – guarding him.

Pitt beat writer Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette writes Dixon was a late scratch against South Florida and he expects the guard to play against the Mountaineers.

                          More discipline needed

The Panthers were whistled for 35 fouls on Sunday against USF. Pitt’s previous season high was 24 fouls committed against Indiana.

"Defensively, we just didn't get it done," Pitt coach Jamie Dixon told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "Jones hurt us and the free throws hurt us. The main thing we said was we didn't want to foul him and he got 17 free-throw attempts.”

                          Skin of the teeth

West Virginia edged Louisville 77-74 on Saturday. The Mountaineers, who were leading 75-74, were awarded a possession when the ball went out of bounds with 6.7 seconds left. The referee closest to the action didn’t see it, and the ref across the floor called it very hesitantly. Replays proved inconclusive.

Louisville coach Rick Pitino believed both refs didn't see the play and Louisville should have been awarded the ball because they had the possession arrow.

WVU leading scorer Da'Sean Butler hit a late hoop to seal the victory but after the game admitted the close call was a little nerve-racking.

"I was just trying to relax" Butler, who has three game winners for the Mountaineers this season, told The Charleston Gazette. "Honestly, I don't like stress and pressure that much. I like to be a little calm if I can."

                          Man down

The Panthers have lost three of their last four and much of that has to do with Ashton Gibbs shooting slump. Pitt's leading scorer averaged 20 points on 51 percent shooting in his first five conference games. His scoring has dropped to 14 per game with a 30 percent clip from the field over the last four games.

"He's just going to have to be patient and let things come to him and we're going to have execute better to get him shots," Pitt coach Jamie Dixon told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "I think he's taking pretty good shots. He needs to get to the free-throw line more. Those are things that get you out of slumps. It's good to get those free throws and get a feel of the ball going through the basket."

Freshman Deniz Kilichli makes his WVU debut Wednesday night after completing a 20-game suspension by the NCAA for playing in a professional game in Turkey. The big man is talented and could provide coach Huggins with some much-needed low-post scoring.

"I think it's going to be a somewhat touchy thing trying to work him into the rotation and make sure he understands everything that he needs to understand,'' Huggins said of the 6-foot-9, 260 lbs. youngster. "But we're looking forward to having him. He gives us the size that we haven't had and certainly the girth that we haven't had and, I think, an ability to score the ball close.''
