    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, January 29

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Capitals take on the Panthers, the Cavaliers have a game in Indiana, and the Celtics look for a win over the Hawks.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA's busy slate for Friday has a dozen games on tap, including Boston at Atlanta in a battle of Eastern powers. The Celtics will be looking to rebound from a pair of losses to the Hawks earlier in the month, as they fell 93-85 in Atlanta on January 8 and 102-96 in Boston on January 11. Joe Johnson led the way for the Hawks with 36 points in that latter matchup, with Josh Smith and Marvin Williams each scoring 14 points. Rajon Rondo tossed in 26 points for Boston in the defeat.

Also on the NBA hardwood on Friday: the Lakers at Philadelphia, Denver at Oklahoma City, Washington at New Jersey, the Clippers at Minnesota, Miami at Detroit, Chicago at New Orleans, Portland at Houston, Memphis at San Antonio, Sacramento at Utah, Charlotte at Golden State, and Cleveland at Indiana. The Cavaliers last took on the Pacers on November 20 in Indiana, with Cleveland picking up a 105-95 road win. LeBron James had a game-high 40 points for the Cavs in that matchup, while Danny Granger had 19 points for the losing Pacers.

On the college basketball schedule for Friday the top matchup will take place at the Resch Center, with Wisconsin-Green Bay hosting Butler in a game between the top two teams in the Horizon League. The Bulldogs (16-4 SU, 8-12 ATS) had no trouble with Illinois-Chicago last time out, cruising to an 84-55 win; Gordon Hayward had 25 points for Butler in that contest. The Phoenix (15-7 SU, 7-7-2 ATS) beat Youngstown State 69-55 last game; Troy Cotton poured in 23 points.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

As well, the National Hockey League offers up six games on Friday, with Toronto at New Jersey, Boston at Buffalo, Nashville at Detroit, Anaheim at Tampa Bay, Colorado at Dallas, and Florida at Washington. The Panthers improved to 23-21-9 on the season with a 2-1 win over Montreal in their last game on Tuesday night; Florida goaltender Tomas Vokoun has given up just seven goals over his last seven outings. The Capitals, though, beat the Panthers of 5-4 in a shootout when the teams last met on January 13, and they're 4-0 against Florida this year.

Bettors best friend: Today's wagering tips

      Friday, January 29

      Lines off the board

Washington Wizards at New Jersey Nets – Devin Harris (wrist) has missed the last two games and is doubtful.

Miami Heat at Detroit Pistons – Michael Beasley (knee) is doubtful for the game. Will Bynum (ankle) and Ben Gordon (groin) have both missed recent games and are questionable.

Los Angeles Clippers at Minnesota Timberwolves – Baron Davis (knee) is probable. Marcus Camby (ribs) left last game and is questionable.

Denver Nuggets at Oklahoma City Thunder – Carmelo Anthony (ankle) has missed the last two games and is probable.

Sacramento Kings at Utah Jazz – Deron Williams (personal) is out. Carlos Boozer (calf) left last game and is questionable.

Princeton at Brown – Tyler Ponticelli (back) missed last game and is questionable.

Penn at Yale – Mike Howlitt (foot) missed last game and is questionable.

Lines to keep an eye on

The Grizzlies-Spurs total incurred action right out of the gate, moving from an opener of 197 to 199.

The Maple Leafs-Devils total moved from an opener of 5.5 (+106/under) to 5.5 (-110/under). The last three meetings between these two teams have gone under.

The Lakers-Sixers total jumped from 201.5 to 202.5. Four of the last five in this series have gone over.

      Who’s hot

The Nuggets have won eight consecutive games (4-3-1 ATS), including the last two without leading scorer Carmelo Anthony.

Butler has won 10 of the last 11 meetings versus Wisconsin-Green Bay (7-4 ATS).

Jose Theodore has earned six straight wins behind a .942 save percentage.

      Who’s not

The Penn Quakers have lost three straight and are 1-13 overall on the season (1-8 ATS).

The Maple Leafs have dropped eight of 10 and are -5.89 units during that span.

Andre Iguodala is averaging 11.8 points over his last six games.

The Kings are 2-10-1 ATS since the New Year.

      Key stat

41.3 – Points per game LeBron James has averaged in his last three visits to Indiana. The Cavs are 5-1 ATS in their last six away games versus the Pacers and are laying 7 points Friday night.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Spurs guard Tony Parker was carried off the court Wednesday after spraining his left ankle. The injury doesn’t appear to be too serious, but will sideline Parker for at least Friday and Sunday’s games. Parker missed four games in November and the Spurs went 2-2 SU and ATS while three of the four games went under the total.

      Games of the Day

Roger Federer vs. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (+465)

Memphis Grizzlies at San Antonio Spurs (-4, 197)

      Notable quotable

"This guy's got a great clock in his head. The big thing is that he throws the ball so early that we're going to have to do a good job of finding ways to get to him and when we do get to him we're going to have to make sure he gets a couple 'remember me' shots when we get there. And the only thing you’d like for me to say is that if it happens you hope he doesn’t get back up and play again."

-- Saints defensive coordinator Greg Williams told Nashville radio station 104.5 The Zone about facing Peyton Manning in the Super bowl.

      Tips and notes

      - Wizards coach Flip Saunders said his team has been “emotionally and mentally worn down” since the Arenas incident. Antawn Jamison said the loss of his teammates has made him “tougher” and “hungrier”. Washington is 3-9 SU and 5-7 ATS since the initial Arenas suspension and face the lowly Nets Friday.

      - Only one wild card has ever won a Grand Slam – last year when Kim Clijsters won the US Open. Justine Henin is a -110 favorite as a wild card to beat Serena Williams in the Aussie Open final.

      - Amar’e Stoudemire is likely on his way out of Phoenix and his play has showed he may have already checked out. In his last three games, Stoudemire has eight turnovers and is averaging 14.3 points and 5.0 rebounds. This article outlines some of the teams interested in acquiring Stoudemire.

        Six-pack for Friday

-- They've already sold 85,000 tickets to the NBA All-Star Game that is being played at Cowboys' Stadium in Dallas next month.

-- Derrick Rose will be the first Chicago Bull to play in NBA All-Star Game since Michael Jordan.

-- South Florida beat Seton Hall last night, their first consecutive wins in Big East play. Ever.

-- Kid named Nankivil on Wisconsin was 7-8 on 3-pointers in Badgers' loss at Purdue; he was averaging 7.9 ppg coming into the game.

-- Arkansas' Courtney Fortson scored 35 points in Hogs' 67-62 upset win over Mississippi State; he only had two points at the half.

-- ESPN's Jimmy Dykes said on-air Thursday he expects Mississippi State recruit Renardo Sidney to be playing for the Bulldogs soon, next week even. Sidney is a bigtime talent who will help the Bulldogs.

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind.......

        13) Rivals.com reports that among their top 50 players in Class of 2010 recruiting class, none are quarterbacks, which is really unusual.

        12) Coaching in the NBA must be a circus; imagine your team signs a star to a $111M contract (yes 111 million) and before the contract is even two years old, you're hoping the league lets you void the contract, due to the star being a complete knucklehead. Must be lot of fun.

        11) Have to laugh when mainstream media mock Johnny Damon for not signing with Bronx Bombers, saying he'll regret it when he winds up on the Reds or A's this summer. Media is so obsessed with the AL East, it ignores that Damon got hurt financially by his divorce and is going for the biggest payday. The way modern baseball is, he could still wind up with one of the big market teams at the trading deadline anyway.

        10) ESPN has a similar fascination with Duke/North Carolina basketball; I'd like to know who decided that former Duke guard Jay Williams would be a good game analyst. He is terrible, horrible, but he went to Duke.....

        9) Over/under of 56.5 in the Super Bowl is highest total in SB history.

        8) I'd be curious to know how one team is favored over another in a Pro Bowl game, and how many people actually wager on the game. This is the only televised football game that I won't watch.

        7) In baseball, a high school star that gets drafted can either go pro or go to college, but if he goes to college, he has to go for 3+ years. Why can't basketball do the same thing? If a Lebron James wants to go pro, so be it, but once a kid goes to school, he's there for three years. Why would this be a bad idea? If its good enough for baseball, why not hoops?

        6) Raise your hand if you thought Maryland would be in first place in the ACC on January 30-- yeah, I didn't think so either.

        5) Sounds like Tim Tebow picked a bad week to have strep throat.

        4) Weren't too many fans at Mississippi State-Arkansas game- there was an ice storm in Arkansas last night. Lot of fans wisely stayed home.

        3) I ask this every year, but everytime I see the goofy Winter X Games, I ask myself where are the people who suck at these events? There have to be hospital emergency rooms filled with kids with broken bones, no? Put it this way-- for every pro golfer, there are 10,000 hackers like me, maybe 100,000. How many kids out there try these stunts and get hurt?

        2) Cal Bears stayed atop the Pac-10 by holding off Arizona State 78-70 in Tempe Thursday. In a down year for the Pac-10, Cal is the best team.

        1) National Signing Day for college football is Wednesday; ESPNU will have nine hours of coverage, starting at 10am. Games for the 2014 season will be influenced when kids sign on the dotted line in the next week.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Today's best NBA bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Lakers at Philadelphia 76ers (+6.5, 202.5)

The progression of Lakers center Andrew Bynum has been on public display since Los Angeles selected the 7-foot man-child out of high school in the 2005 NBA Draft.

Bynum has been growing leaps and bounds in the past two seasons and showed just how far he has come during the Lakers’ current eight-game road trip. Against the Indiana Pacers Wednesday, Bynum scored 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, helping L.A. to a 118-96 win as a 5.5-point road favorite.

Bynum, who is averaging almost 16 points and more than eight rebounds, was holding out hope that he would be among the players selected as reserves for the Western Conference All-Star Team. However, coaches have submitted their ballots and Bynum didn’t make the cut.

"Hopefully I did, but [Thursday] we all find out," Bynum told the Los Angeles Times before the reserves were announced. "I think if I didn't make it, I think it would be political more so than anything and that's just something I'll have to deal with."

Hopefully the All-Star snub doesn’t discourage the 22-year-old. He was able to beat up on a shorter Pacers frontcourt but now takes on the Sixers, who have beefy forwards in Elton Brand, Samuel Dalembert and Marreese Speights.

Bynum missed the Lakers’ most recent meeting with Philadelphia but scored 18 points against the Sixers in a 114-102 win back in December 2008.

              Pick: Los Angeles

Los Angeles Clippers at Minnesota Timberwolves (N/A)

Speaking of All-Star snubs, perhaps the biggest slap in the face Thursday was delivered to Clippers center Chris Kaman.

Los Angeles’ pasty big man, who is scoring 20 points and grabbing nine rebounds per game, was left of the Western Conference All-Stars reserve list and he’s not happy about it. Not one bit.

"I don’t think Gasol should be in it at all," Kaman told reporters last week. "He’s only played, like, 20 games. I think you should have to play, like, 80 percent of the games.

"It shouldn’t be 50 percent [of games played] over a guy who plays 90 percent and who has better numbers. Not just me. Zach Randolph, a power forward, he has better numbers [than Gasol]. But he’s not on the Lakers."

The T-Wolves have the unfortunate task of facing the Clippers and their pissed off big Friday. Kaman is averaging 19 points and over seven rebounds since returning from a back injury that held him out four games. Los Angeles is 3-3 since his return and has covered in four of those six contests.

              Pick: Los Angeles

Helpside defense: NBA betting notes & schedule traps
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Bower power

The New Orleans Hornets were so lethargic to open the season that they fired head coach Byron Scott nine games into the campaign. General manager Jeff Bower took over on the bench, but the team continued their sluggish play; a sub .500 squad as the calendar turned to 2010. The Hornets couldn't win away from home as their 2-13 straight up road record showed.

But those road troubles have been a non-issue over the last few weeks. They’ve won 12 of their last 16 games, including three out of four on a recently finished up trip. New Orleans won straight up at Utah, Oklahoma City, Washington, Indiana, Minnesota, Portland and Golden State, notching a 7-1 ATS mark in their last eight tries as an underdog.

All star point guard Chris Paul told reporters that he was excited about the team’s improved play.
“This was a big trip for us. We won in some tough venues. Everyone knows the road has been our Achilles’ heel so far.”

But Coach Bower warned reporters that continued success wouldn’t be easy, with seven of their remaining eight games before the All-Star break coming against playoff-bound teams.

“We know how difficult it will be, especially with our upcoming schedule. We’re playing many of the same teams we’re battling… we’re going to have to continue to improve.”

                Jazzing It Up

The Utah Jazz defined 'mediocre' through the first two months of the season. Jerry Sloan’s squad was sitting at 19-17 SU, 20-16-1 against the spread after splitting a home-and-home series with the Grizzlies to close out the first week of January.

Since that time, the Jazz have finally started to click, going 8-1 SU, 7-0-2 ATS in their last nine contests. Following their latest win, a 106-95 blowout at Portland on Wednesday, point guard Deron Williams told reporters “We’re definitely playing our best basketball right now.”

Utah’s transformation began in the very first game after Jerry Sloan decided to insert forward Andrei Kirilenko into the starting lineup. Sloan recently told reporters that Kirilenko’s defense has been paramount in the club's recent success.

“No question [his size] makes a big difference. He's able to block shots and play defense. I probably should have had him [starting] all along, if I'd been smart enough.”

Deron Williams concurred: “A.K.'s length bothers people defensively. He gives us an added shot-blocker out there to start the game, which helps."

                Raging Bulls

The Chicago Bulls recent road trip was a complete turnaround from their early season play. The Bulls were awful for the better part of two full months to open the season, sitting at 10-17 SU, 8-17-2 ATS after blowing a 35-point lead to Sacramento at home, then losing badly to the Knicks the following night.

Published reports had head coach Vinny Del Negro with one foot out the door. Starting center Joakim Noah told reporters “When you can’t win games because you’re not talented enough to win games, that’s one thing. But that’s what was frustrating about the whole thing was we were better than that.”

Chicago's won four straight, all on the road, after dropping the first two games of the West Coast swing. More important for bettors, the Bulls have been a pointspread machine since that loss to the Knicks; 13-4 ATS since Christmas.

Equally important, the Bulls appear to be holding their value. Chicago was an underdog of at least six points in all four of those recent road victories.

All-Star Derrick Rose has keyed their recent surge on offense, averaging more than 26 points per game during the road winning streak.

“It all starts with Derrick Rose," Noah told reporters. "He’s just playing huge for us, making the right decisions, staying aggressive offensively. When your point guard is playing like that, it usually leads to good things.”

But the Bulls defense has been improving by leaps and bounds as well. They forced 14 consecutive missed shots from Oklahoma City to open up the fourth quarter in their latest win. Their 13-4 ATS run has been marked by defensive intensity, holding 12 of those 17 foes under 100 points.

                Weekend schedule traps:

                Friday: Chicago at New Orleans

The Bulls finally close out their longest road trip of the year at New Orleans. Will the Bulls be ‘fat and happy’ after winning four straight on the road as underdogs against the suddenly resurgent Hornets?

Saturday: Portland Trail Blazers at Dallas Mavericks

The short-handed Blazers face a Texas Two-Step here, on the second night of a back-to-back against the Mavs. This is only the beginning of a particularly nasty stretch for Portland, with five games against playoff contenders in a seven day span.

Sunday: Los Angeles Lakers at Boston Celtics

L.A. could face some road trip fatigue. The Lakers will be playing their eighth game in eight different cities in less than two weeks. To make matters worse, this is an early start game for a West Coast team. And don’t forget the following night – they’ll be playing in Memphis without rest, before finally heading home.

                  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the day: Grizzlies at Spurs
                  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Memphis Grizzlies at San Antonio Spurs (-4, 199)

                  New Grizzlies

The Grizzlies were an afterthought to begin the season. They started 1-8 and didn’t show much promise.

But with their win at Detroit Wednesday, they snapped a three-game road losing streak and have now surpassed their road win total from a year ago (eight). They are arguably the hottest team in the NBA right now, winning 15 of their last 19 games (14-4-1 ATS).

They have a young, talented mix of players in their starting line-up. All five players average double digits with “veteran” 29-year-old Zach Randolph leading the way with 21 ppg.

They have a chance to make a big statement on the road Friday. They are just a game behind the Spurs for playoff positioning and, although the postseason is months away, this would be a huge win for the youthful Grizzlies.

                  Sputtering Spurs

San Antonio ended its mini-losing streak against the Hawks Wednesday. The Spurs had lost five of their previous six including three straight home games.

The Spurs’ offense has sputtered lately and they can’t afford to get into a shootout against the high-octane Grizzlies. They have made less than 43.5 percent of their field goals in each of the past seven games and average 94.8 points in those seven games.

More bad news for the Spurs

Point guard Tony Parker left in the third quarter Wednesday with an ankle injury. Parker is listed as day-to-day but don’t expect him to play on Friday.

“Tony said it wasn't so bad, but he will probably miss a couple of games,” said Manu Ginobili, one of three Spurs who will be asked to fill in at the point until the All-NBA guard returns.

X-rays taken at the arena were negative, but a timetable for Parker's return won't be established until he is re-examined by the team's medical staff.

                  Previous meeting

These two met in Memphis just 13 days ago. Memphis was a slight favorite at home (-1.5) and it played well enough to get a slim six-point victory. The defenses dominated as San Antonio shot just 41.4 percent and Memphis finished slightly better at 43.4 percent from the field.

Memphis’ main edge was that it made 10 more free throws and had a plus-7 rebounding edge. Memphis has had recent troubles visiting the Spurs, where it is 0-4 SU and 1-3-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings in San Antonio.

                  Trends

The Grizzlies are one of the hottest teams in the NBA right now and their ATS record confirms that. Memphis is 7-1 ATS in its last eight road games and 18-7-1 ATS in its last 26 games overall.

San Antonio has struggled lately and its ATS record confirms that as well. The Spurs are 2-5 ATS in their last seven home games and also 2-5 ATS in their last seven games overall.

In head-to-head meetings, the favorite is 5-1 ATS in the last six games and the home team is 7-3-1 ATS in the last 11 meetings.

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Maple Leafs at New Jersey Devils (-215, 5.5)

Martin Brodeur is a savvy veteran who has been through some tough times in his NHL career. But with the Devils’ lack of goal support in recent losses, Brodeur is probably close to boiling over and giving his teammates a good tongue lashing.

Brodeur stuffed 30 shots in a 2-1 shootout loss to the Buffalo Sabres Wednesday night, marking the seventh time in the past 10 games the final score has fallen under the total. New Jersey is 17-32 over/under this year – the most profitable under play in hockey.

“We got a point. The way we’ve been playing, to score one goal and get a point, we’ll take it,” a dejected Brodeur told the New Jersey Star-Ledger following Wednesday’s loss.

New Jersey has dropped seven of its last 10 games, scoring an average of just 1.5 goals during this slump including getting shutout twice. Brodeur has done his best to keep the Devils competitive in recent starts. He’s allowed just over two goals per game in this span and posted two clean sheets of his own.

New Jersey faces Toronto Friday night. The Maple Leafs boast an even 26-26 over/under count but have also struggled to light the lamp in recent games. They have scored just eight total goals in their last four games – all of which were losses and three of those played under the number.

                              Pick: Under

Nashville Predators at Detroit Red Wings (-150, 5.5)

These aren’t your father’s Detroit Red Wings. Hell, they’re not even your Detroit Red Wings.

The perennial powerhouse Wings are stumbling in 2010, losing three straight games and posting just eight wins in 13 contests since the New Year. Detroit’s most recent defeat was at the hands of the Minnesota Wild, who took a 5-2 victory at home Wednesday night.

"You know, we were right there," captain Nick Lidstrom told the Detroit News. "But lately we are finding ways to lose instead of finding ways to win."

Detroit has hemorrhaged goals during this three game funk, giving up a total of 13. Veteran goaltender Chris Osgood made just his second start in five games Wednesday, allowing five goals on 25 shots. Jimmy Howard hasn’t fared much better, allowing five goals in his most recent trip between the pipes.

Adding to the defensive woes is an injury to defenseman Brad Stuart, who sprained his shoulder in the first period but played through the pain until early in the third when the Wild put the game out of reach. His status for Friday’s game is still up in the air.

Nashville lost 3-2 in overtime against Detroit back in December but has won four of the last five meetings with the Red Wings, outscoring them 21-10 in that span.

                              Pick: Nashville
