Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Kentucky takes on Connecticut, the Sixers play host to the Pistons, and the Capitals try to pick up a win against the Sabres.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There are nine games on the NBA's schedule for Wednesday, including Detroit at Philadelphia. The Pistons are coming off a 98-94 home win over Washington on Sunday, with Rodney Stuckey scoring a team-high 25 points in the victory. Charlie Villanueva added 18 points off the bench in the contest. The 76ers fell 93-83 at home to Denver on Monday night, with Andre Iguodala leading the offense with 31 points. Allen Iverson scored 11 points in his Philly season debut.

Rounding out the NBA's schedule for Wednesday: Chicago at Atlanta, Portland at Indiana, Golden State at New Jersey, Toronto at Milwaukee, New Orleans at Minnesota, Cleveland at Houston, Sacramento at San Antonio, and Utah at the Lakers. Los Angeles is coming off a 108-88 blowout home win over rival Phoenix on Sunday night, as Kobe Bryant poured in a game-high 26 points. Ron Artest added 15 points in that victory, while Pau Gasol had 14 points in Sunday's game.

In the college ranks No. 1 Kansas hits the hardwood on Wednesday night with a home game against Radford, while No. 4 Kentucky visits No. 14 Connecticut in the night's ranked matchup. The Wildcats (8-0 SU, 2-4 ATS) are coming off a 68-66 win against North Carolina last time out, with Patrick Patterson scoring 19 points in the contest. The Huskies (6-1 SU, 1-5 ATS) beat Harvard by a score of 79-73 in their last matchup. Jerome Dyson was good for 24 points in that victory.

Other games involving ranked teams on a busy Wednesday include Duquesne at No. 6 West Virginia, Valparaiso at No. 5 Purdue, No. 20 Wisconsin at Wisconsin-Green Bay, Augustana at No. 21 Gonzaga, and No. 3 Villanova at St. Joseph's. The ranked Wildcats (8-0 SU, 6-1 ATS) got past Maryland 95-86 in their last game; Scottie Reynolds was good for 25 points in Villanova's win in that contest.

Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the National Hockey League offers up 10 games for Wednesday night, including Washington at Buffalo. The Capitals got star forward Alexander Ovechkin back from suspension on Monday night, and he scored a pair of goals in the team's 3-0 road win over Tampa Bay. Semyon Varlamov made 26 saves for the shutout. The Sabres were blanked in their last game on Monday night, falling 3-0 to the Devils at home. Ryan Miller stopped 34 of 37 New Jersey shots.

Also on tap on Wednesday: the Islanders at Toronto, Florida at Columbus, St. Louis at Detroit, Edmonton at Tampa Bay, the Rangers at Chicago, Minnesota at Colorado, Atlanta at Calgary, Los Angeles at San Jose, and Carolina at New Jersey. The Devils got goals from Brian Rolston, Travis Zajac, and Niclas Bergfors in their win over the Sabres on Monday night, while Martin Brodeur made 22 saves. Brodeur tied the NHL record for career shutouts (103) in the win.

Green Bay's day

This isn't even the biggest sporting event of the week in Green Bay since the Packers hosted Baltimore on ''Monday Night Football,'' but it will be the basketball event of the year in the Dairy State.
Wisconsin comes calling on its smaller cousin, Wisconsin-Green Bay, which appears to be rebuilding itself into a mid-major power. Having never lost to the Phoenix, the Badgers remain the big men on campus, only this time it's in Green Bay for the first time since 2002. The Badgers (6-1) are coming off an upset over Duke, but the Phoenix (8-2) are off to their best start since 1995-96, the last time they made some noise in the Big Dance. Wisconsin is -5 with a total of 136.

Down goes Granger

The Portland Trail Blazers are still smarting from their latest injury loss of center Greg Oden for the season, but the Pacers suddenly find themselves in the same boat.

On Tuesday, star forward Danny Granger (24 ppg) was ruled out for 4-6 weeks with a heel injury and point guard Earl Watson was listed as questionable due to a hamstring injury. Even if he plays it will be difficult to run the floor.

Also consider that the Pacers have lost 5 in a row SU and are just 6-12 ATS on the year. The Blazers are favored by 6 with a total of 191.


Road-kill 'Canes

What do the Carolina Hurricanes have in common with possums? Both are usually found dead on the road.

How else do you describe a team that's 1-10-1-2 SU on the road this season and 1-4 as an away team against a host with a home-winning percentage of .600 or higher? The Devils (9-5 SU at home) certainly qualify.

The 'Canes also are 1-4 playing on one day's rest and are 1-11 against the Atlantic Division this season. The Devils are -200 with a total of 5.

13) Browns-- Brady Quinn looked like Dan Fouts on first drive Sunday, going 6-6/61 yards, but was just 19-39 the rest of the game.

12) Buccaneers-- Let me see, they fired the offensive coordinator, demoted the defensive coordinator, changed QB's twice, and won once. Not good.

11) Lions-- Looking for silver lining: Tied for sixth in forced fumbles (21).

10) Rams-- If you could put Marc Bulger's brain in Kyle Boller's body, you'd have a good quarterback. Looking forward to the April draft.

9) Bills-- Their big question is whether Ryan Fitzpatrick is the QB they want to move forward with.

8) Bengals-- Giving up 293 yards/game, 4th-best in the league.

7) Cardinals-- Does the QB make the WRs, or do the WRs make the QB, or is it little of both? To me, receivers work little harder to get open when they know an accurate passer is throwing to them.

6) Broncos-- Watch Wyoming's bowl game and tell me their uniforms don't look like Denver's throwback unis.

5) Vikings-- I'm still amazed the Jets got snookered by Favre; they gave up a 3rd-round pick to Green Bay, then cut him after one year, and now he is exactly where he wanted to be all along. Funny how things work out.

4) Eagles-- Read on the Internet today that Eldrick Woods hasn't appeared in a national TV commerical since November 29; are sponsors pulling their spots temporarily, or has the golden goose been grounded?

3) Chargers-- What would have happened if they kept Drew Brees? Not saying one way or other, I'm just wondering......

2) Colts-- Indy has had trouble with San Diego in recent years, so maybe the key to their playoff hopes is avoiding Bolts as long as possible.

1) Saints-- Boy they're fun to watch. They're having all kind of problems in secondary, which forces them to score 30+ points every game.

Utah Jazz at Los Angeles Lakers (-10, 205)

Lakers coach Phil Jackson gave his starters the day off to rest after the club dismantled the Phoenix Suns for the second time in the past few weeks.

“I think they’re a little bit better than us right now,” Steve Nash told reporters after the 20-point loss Sunday.

Suns coach Alvin Gentry went a step further indicating to reporters that his club is more worried about competing with teams like Denver, Houston and Utah than Los Angeles at the moment.

You heard it right folks. That’s the coach of a 15-6 team telling reporters his boys are playing for second place in the Western Confernce.

The win improved the Purple and Gold’s season record to a league-best 16-3 and increased their win streak to nine games. LA has benefitted from a cozy start to the campaign. Seventeen of the team’s 21 games have been at the STAPLES Center.

The Jazz are playing well but they’re more likely to cover against the Lakers in their own gym later this week.

Detroit Pistons at Philadelphia 76ers (NA)

The Pistons shocked hoop followers with their 94-88 win over the Hawks last week. Detroit hasn’t slowed down since that big win either. The club fell to Chicago but rebounded with victories over Milwaukee and Washington.

The steady scoring of combo guard Rodney Stuckey has been a blessing for the Pistons. He’s averaging 21 points and 5.7 assists over the last four games. Not surprisingly, Detroit is 3-0-1 against the spread over the same period.

Things aren’t as rosy in Philly. Allen Iverson returned to his old habits in the City of Brotherly Love, showing up just an hour before tipoff in his first game back with the Sixers.

Meanwhile, Elton Brand isn’t happy with his role in the offense or his time on the floor. Things are going to get worse before they get better in Philadelphia.

Information on the best of Wednesday's college hoop games.

Harvard (+18) upset Boston College 82-70 LY; Crimson lost 79-73 in last game to UConn, is now 7-2 (lost by 3 at Army) with triple OT win over WmMary squad thats won six in a row since. BC is 5-3 after 62-58 win at Michigan. Ivy League road dogs are 9-12 vs spread. ACC home favorites are 13-11 against the spread.

St John's is 6-1 after respectable 80-71 loss at Duke Saturday (down 16 at half, though). Red Storm is 0-2 vs spread as a favorite this year, with wins by 1-3 in those games. Georgia is 4-3, 0-2 on road, losing 72-56 at UAB (+8), 74-62 at Va Tech Saturday. SEC road underdogs are 6-11 against spread. Big East home favorites are 16-22 vs spread.

Duquesne (+7) lost 68-63 to West Virginia LY, after being up 8 at half; Dukes are 5-2, losing 83-77 at 7-1 W. Carolina, in double OT to Pitt in crosstown rivalry game- they won by 2 at shaky Iowa. Kentucky is 8-0, beating Stanford 73-65 (ot), Cleveland State (73-49) on neutral court- their other six games were at home. UConn is 6-1, losing on this floor to Duke Nov 27 (Huskies lost two of last three at in NYC, with 6-OT loss in Big East tourney LY). UConn struggled to win 79-73 over Harvard in last game Sunday. SEC road teams are 10-19 vs spread.

Cal (-11) beat Pacific 68-56 LY, leading by 16 at half; 5-3 Bears are still banged-up, but slowly getting healthier- they lost only previous game on road, 86-78 at New Mexico. 7-1 Pacific doesn't play stiff teams; no one scored more than 64 points on them (six of eight foes under 60). Tigers are 4-1 in games decided by six or less points.

San Diego is weird team, losing last four games, collapsing in second half in three of them; they scored just 52.5 ppg in those losses. WCC dogs are 14-16 vs spread, 5-4 at home. New Mexico is 8-0 with wins at both Hawai'i (83-71), New Mexico State (83-71). Lobos won 57-54 at San Diego LY. WCC home dogs are 5-4. MWC road faves are 4-5.

Los Angeles Kings at San Jose Sharks (-175, 5.5)

The Sharks appeared to be showing their teeth the last two weeks, with five wins in six games. But heading into Wednesday night, San Jose has dropped two games at home, scoring just three total goals in losses to St. Louis and Calgary.

Head coach Todd McLellan is pointing to his team’s power play inside HP Pavilion. The Sharks are 1-for-17 on the man advantage in the last four games at home, dropping to just under 12 percent for the season.

McLellan put his players through the paces this week, putting in extra time on special teams during practice.

"We aren't really inventing the wheel," McLellan told the San Jose Mercury News, "just trying to polish it up a little bit and do it the way we're supposed to do it."

That anemic attack has led to back-to-back under paydays for total bettors. And with Los Angeles making the trip down the coast, that trend will continue Wednesday night. The Kings and Sharks battled in San Jose back in late October, with L.A. taking a 2-1 shootout victory that finished well below the 6-goal total.

It’s supposed to be near freezing with snow and rain showers in Edmonton Wednesday night. No wonder the Oilers are loving life on their current six-game road trip. The team is especially happy to be at Tampa Bay – and not just for the sun and surf.

Edmonton has started this road swing with a bang, winning three of the first four games including a 3-2 shootout victory over the Florida Panthers Monday night. The Lightning, on the other hand, have just one win in their last six games and are coming off a 3-0 shutout loss to the Washington Capitals.

"You have to ride these highs as long as you can, you have to get as many points as you can," Oilers forward Shawn Horcoff told reporters. "We feel like we've been playing pretty well. If we can string together some games, we feel like we can put ourselves back in the playoff picture."

Edmonton’s offense is scoring just over three goals per game during this streak and is getting solid goaltending from Jeff Deslauriers. The rookie netminder, who played 12 games in 2008-09, has faced an average of 33 shots in these three games, allowing only five total goals and coming up big in back-to-back shootout victories.
