Pucking the trends: Why the Flames are smoking hot
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Bruin a Cup of Stanley?

After a slow start, the Boston Bruins find themselves at the top of the Northeast division.

A big reason for Boston’s success has been the play of goaltenders Tim Thomas and Tuukka Rask.

Thomas has a 2.48 goals against average, a save percentage of .914 and three shutouts.

Rask has been even better, posting a 1.97 goals against average, .932 save percentage and a shutout.

“It’s nice to have two solid, solid goaltenders,” Bruins captain Zdeno Chara told reporters. “Each can basically steal the game for us. (Rask) and Timmy both are playing extremely well.”

Boston has gone 9-2-3 following a 6-7-2 stretch to open the season.

    Snow easy schedule

Terry Frei of the Denver Post observes that Colorado’s success has come despite playing only 11 games at home and a league high 21 games on the road.

According to Avs coach Joe Sacco, the early road games were beneficial to his young squad.

"It started on that first road trip," said Sacco. "We got off to a great start, we formed some chemistry with each other, and the guys believed. That's the bottom line. When you believe in each other, you have that feeling that you can go out and win any game."

Colorado has a record of 10-7-4 on the road, and a 17-9-6 record overall.

    Flying low

Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer thinks the Philadelphia Flyers are at a crossroads.

After a 12-5-1 start, the Flyers have fallen to 13-13-1. Another goaltender controversy is emerging, the offense has scored five goals in Philadelphia’s last five games and its power play is 0-19 during that span.

The Flyers lost their most recent game despite allowing just 13 shots.

"There's a long way to go in all three zones . . . and a lot of work that's needed,” said new coach Peter Laviolette.

    Winning is a Bryz

The Coyotes have won five games in a row and the main reason for the Coyotes’ success has been the play of goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov.

Bryzgalov ranks third in the NHL with a 1.99 goals against average and leads the NHL with four shutouts. He has a record of 17-8-1.

Jim Gintonio of the Arizona Republic is of the opinion that Bryzgalov has done an excellent job cleaning up scoring chances created as a result of Coyotes’ mistakes.

"He's so confident," said Coyotes captain Shane Doan. "He makes the game look so easy, and it really isn't that easy. He's just always square to the puck, it always seem to be hitting him in the middle of his body … He's just making it look incredibly simple."

Phoenix is 18-11-1, and has an over/under record of 7-22-1.

    On schedule

Thursday December 10, Atlanta Thrashers vs. Vancouver Canucks

Flying from the Southeastern United States to Western Canada to play a road game is difficult. It’s even more difficult when it’s your second road game in as many nights and third road game in four nights.

Saturday December 12, Carolina Hurricanes at Ottawa Senators

The Hurricanes finish their grueling road trip in Ottawa after playing in Pittsburgh, New Jersey, and Washington earlier in the week. Carolina is playing the second game of a back-to-back situation against a Senators team playing on regular rest.

Saturday December 12, Florida Panthers at Pittsburgh Penguins

Florida plays Wednesday in Columbus, before playing an exhausting Devils team Friday, then traveling to Pittsburgh Saturday to play against the defending Stanley Cup Champions.

Kentucky Wildcats vs. Connecticut Huskies (Pick 'em, 145)

            National powers meet in Challenge

Over the last 20 seasons, Kentucky and Connecticut have each won two national titles and both teams have Final Four aspirations this season.

On Wednesday night, these perennial powers will face off in the Big East-SEC Invitational at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The fourth-ranked Kentucky Wildcats have started the season 8-0. But while they have a quality win over North Carolina, the Wildcats have often played down to the level of their opponents, struggling at times against low-level, mid-major teams.

Kentucky point guard John Wall leads the Wildcats in scoring at 18.1 points per game and is just as good at passing the ball, averaging nearly eight assists. Wall is a master of distributing the basketball especially during fast breaks. He quickly drives the ball up the floor and finds players for open dunks or wide open jump shots.

Junior forward Patrick Patterson has been the primary beneficiary of Wall’s ability to find the open man. During Patterson’s first two seasons in Lexington, he was the primary scoring option. While Patterson is still scoring nearly 17 points per game, he finally has the supporting cast he needs to take some weight off his shoulders. On any given night a different Wildcat can lead the team in scoring.

Connecticut, ranked 14th nationally in this week’s Associated Press poll, fell in its only matchup against a team ranked in the Top 25 this season, losing 68-59 to Duke over the Thanksgiving weekend.

Connecticut is led by senior guard Jerome Dyson who tops the Huskies in scoring at 20.1 points per game. However, Dyson has struggled shooting the ball this season, shooting less than 40 percent from the field and less than 30 percent from behind the arc. If Connecticut is going to be able to compete with the talent of Kentucky, Dyson will need to be more efficient from the field and avoid taking the bad shots that he has been accustomed to taking this season.

Dyson is not the only scoring option for the Huskies. Stanley Robinson and Kemba Walker are both averaging 15.4 points per game. Robinson, a 6-9 forward, will have his hands full inside as he will battle against Patterson. The Huskies will likely try to make this a half court game in an attempt to slow down the Wildcats, who are best in transition.

            Back on top

Since Kentucky last won the national title in 1998, the team with the most wins in NCAA history, has simply been average. It missed the NCAA tournament in 2009 for the first time in 18 years and fired head coach Billy Gillespi after just two seasons in Lexington.

First year Kentucky coach John Calipari has the Wildcats back among the top teams in the country. After struggling through some close early-season victories over unheralded opponents Miami (Ohio) and Sam Houston State, the Wildcats played to their ability getting a 68-66 victory over 11th ranked North Carolina last Saturday. They were led by a key 28-2 first-half run to help build a 15-point halftime lead.

Kentucky has been plagued by spurts of inconsistency. Despite beating North Carolina, it led by 19 points late in the first half but was unable to knock North Carolina out, letting the Tar Heels back into the game late in the second half. Kentucky also needed overtime to beat 4-3 Stanford.

            Super freshmen

Kentucky hired former Memphis coach John Calipari in April and Calipari quickly assembled the top recruiting class in the country including five-star players Eric Bledsoe, DeMarcus Cousins, Daniel Orton and the nation’s top recruit John Wall. Wall, a shifty, 6-foot point guard who loves to drive and put up shots in traffic, leads the Wildcats in scoring as well as assists.

Wall, Cousins and Bledsoe are all averaging more than 10 points per game and it seems with each game that they play together, they become more and more comfortable with each other. Wall has been consistent, scoring at least 12 points to go along with at least five assists in each of his seven games this season. If they continue to put it all together, this is a team that has a legitimate shot at playing for the national title in Indianapolis.

            Narrow victories

Both Kentucky and Connecticut have struggled at times against mid-major opponents this season. Kentucky has narrow wins over Miami (Ohio) (72-70) and Sam Houston State (102-92) while Connecticut has squeaked past Hofstra (76-67) and Harvard (79-73). Kentucky and Connecticut are a combined 3-9 against the spread this season.

Kentucky seems to struggle when Wall is not on the floor. That was evident in the second half of Saturday’s game against North Carolina, where Wall missed more than 10 minutes with leg cramps. That allowed North Carolina to nearly steal a victory at Rupp Arena. Without Wall on the floor, the Wildcats were unable to get the easy fast break points that they got in the first half.

            Familiar confines

Connecticut will play its third game of the season at Madison Square Garden after beating LSU 81-55 November 25 and losing to Duke 68-59 November 27. Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun is 44-30 at MSG and will play again in the world’s most famous arena again during the Big East tournament in March. Under Calhoun, Connecticut is 195-22 record in November and December against non-conference foes.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                    Tips and Trends
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleveland Cavaliers at Houston Rockets [8:30 PM ET]

Cavaliers (-3, O/U 194.5): Cleveland stands at 15-6 SU this year, as the only team in the Central division over .500. The Cavaliers come off a shocking road loss to the Grizzlies last night as a -7.5 favorite. Cleveland is much better at covering spreads on the road than they are at home. The Cavs are 7-4 ATS away from home this year, including last night's debacle in Memphis. Tonight's point spread represents the smallest the Cavaliers have been favored all season. The previous 2 times they were 1 point underdogs, and they won both games SU and ATS. Cleveland had won 13 consecutive games against the Western Conference SU before losing last night to Memphis. F LeBron James is 4th in scoring (28 PPG) and 6th in assists (8.4) in the entire NBA. Cleveland is 4th in the NBA in scoring defense, allowing only 94 PPG. Cleveland has held 8 of their last 9 opponents under 100 PTS.

Cavs are 9-2 ATS last 11 vs. NBA Southwest.
Over is 21-3-2 last 26 games as a road favorite up to 4.5 points.

Key Injuries - F Jamario Moon (groin) is questionable.
F Leon Powe (knee) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 102 (Side of the Day)

Rockets: Houston is 12-8 SU on the season, which many find as a surprise. Houston has only lost consecutive games once this season. They face that exact scenario tonight, as they are coming off a SU loss to Portland in their last game. It's been nearly a month sine the Rockets won a game ATS at home. Their last home win ATS was 11/11 against Memphis. Coming into tonight, they've lost 4 consecutive games at home ATS . Twice this season the Rockets have been a home underdog, and twice they've won ATS. The Rockets have 4 players averaging more than 14 PPG. F Trevor Ariza leads the way with 17.6 PPG, including 44 three pointers made on the season. F Carl Landry averages 16.3 PPG while shooting better than 56% from the field. The Rockets need to improve their defense, as they allow opponents to shoot greater than 47% from the field, 5th worst in the NBA.

Rockets are 4-0 ATS last 4 games as a home underdog.
Under is 5-0 last 5 games overall.

Key Injuries - G Tracy McGrady (knee) is out.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 93

Utah Jazz at Los Angeles Lakers [10:30 PM ET]

Jazz: Utah is 11-9 SU this season, but their record doesn't indicate how well they are playing currently. The Jazz have won 8 of their past 10 games SU. Utah is 9-3 ATS over their past 12 games, including winning their past 3 games ATS as underdogs. Utah has been poor on the road ATS, as they are only 3-5. F Carlos Boozer leads a group of 5 other players that average double figures in PTS. Boozer leads the team with 21.3 PPG, and has scored 21 PTS or more in his past 8 games. Boozer has just been named Western Conference Player of the Week for his efforts last week. PG Deron Williams averages nearly 19 PPG, along with 10 APG. Williams is one of only 2 players in the entire NBA that average double digits in assists this season. Utah has lost 12 straight games to the Lakers at the Staples Center.

Jazz are 6-17 ATS last 23 games as a road underdog.
Over is 5-0 last 5 vs. Western Conference.

Key Injuries - G Ronnie Price (toe) is questionable.
F Andrei Kirilenko (back) is questionable.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 105

Lakers (-10, O/U 206): The Lakers have won 9 consecutive games, and have an NBA best 16-3 record SU. Los Angeles is 6-3 ATS during this current 9 game winning streak. The Lakers are 8-7 ATS at home this year, where they've played a league high 15 games at home to start the season. As double digit favorites at home, the Lakers are 3-3 ATS. G Kobe Bryant is 2nd in the NBA in scoring, at 28.9 PPG. Both C Andrew Bynum and F Pau Gasol average more than 15 PPG, and the Lakers have yet to lose since Gasol came back from his injury to start the season. These 3 players lead the 6th best offense in the NBA at 104.6 PPG. Defensively, the Lakers have held 8 of their past 9 opponents under 100 PTS. The Lakers lead the NBA in opposing field goal percentage, at 42.7%. Only 6 of their opponents have shot better than .45% from the field against them.

Lakers are 8-3 ATS last 11 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.
Under is 9-3 last 12 vs. NBA Northwest.

Key Injuries - F Luke Walton (finger) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 114 (OVER - Total of the Day)

                      Len's Top 5

Happy Wednesday everyone, here's my Top 5 for December 9, 2009 from Len Berman.

                      1. Quick Hits

                      * The Yankees pick up all star center fielder Curtis Granderson from Detroit. It's a 3 team deal among the Yanks, Tigers and Diamondbacks. The Yankees give up pitchers Ian Kennedy and Phil Coke plus an outfield prospect Austin Jackson.
                      * Gatorade says it is dropping its Tiger Woods drink, but they say the decision was made before "all this."
                      * Driver Danica Patrick will take her star appeal to NASCAR, racing a car co-owned by Dale Earnhardt, Jr.
                      * No props! Chad Ochocinco of Cincinnati is fined $30-thousand for putting on a poncho and sombrero after scoring a touchdown.
                      * Snow day! Alabama cancels classes from January 6th through the 8th. On January 7th, the Alabama plays Texas for the college football national championship.

                      2. The Circling Vultures

I happened to be driving into Manhattan when the story was breaking yesterday about a woman being taken by ambulance from Tiger Woods' home. The speculation was rampant on the radio. Was it his wife? Her sister? Her mom? Turns out it was Tiger's mother-in-law who had stomach pain. But you could just hear the tabloids springing into action. When will it all stop? How will it all end? I'm starting to wonder if it's at all possible for Tiger's life to ever return to some sense of normalcy. But of course, he's the one who started all this.

                      3. Passing the Bucs

When I mentioned yesterday that the Pittsburgh Pirates aren't raising ticket prices for the 8th straight year, I got to thinking. When was the last time the Yankees or Red Sox held the line? I then I wondered what the Pirates top ticket costs? $160-dollars as opposed to $2500 for the Yankees and $328 for Boston. This season marks the 50th anniversary of the classic Yankees/Pirates World Series which ended of Bill Mazeroski's home run for Pittsburgh. The last time Boston and Pittsburgh faced off was the first World Series in 1903. Cy Young was pitching for Boston for goodness sakes. Thanks to baseball's hoary disparity we will never see a Yankees/Pirates or Red Sox/Pirates World Series again.

                      4. Bryant Gumbel

Bryant revealed yesterday that he's had surgery for lung cancer, and his battle isn't over. Bryant was gracious to me when I succeeded him as host of the NBC's NFL pre-game show in 1982, and he was the perfect host when we introduced Spanning the World on the Today Show in 1989. The first morning he yelled across the studio to Jane Pauley "Hey Janie, you gotta see this." Godspeed Bryant.

                      5. Nice Job

So how do you earn $45-thousand a year without working? According to the New York Times you sift through the discarded tickets at OTB parlors. That's what Jesus Leonardo does. He spends 10 hours a day feeding thrown away tickets through a scanner, and voila! He gets to feed his family. He once cashed a Pick 4 ticket from a Texas track worth $95-hundred! And he pays taxes on his winnings. Hey it's a career. And you thought the old saying was just poppycock? "One man's trash is another man's treasure."

Happy Birthday: Former Bears linebacker Dick Butkus. 67.
Bonus Birthday: Actor Kirk Douglas. 93.

Today in Sports: The famed "Sneakers Game." Because of snowy conditions at the Polo Grounds the Giants cleverly switched to sneakers at halftime and beat the Bears 30-13 to win the NFL Championship. 1934.
Bonus Event: What was on Page 6? Noah Webster starts the first daily newspaper in New York City called American Minerva. 1793.
