Pucking the trends: Why the Flames are smoking hot
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    A.O. a No Go?

Alex Ovechkin left Monday’s game after delivering a knee-on-knee hit to Tim Gleason, and is day to day with a knee injury.

Washington Capitals beat writer Tarik El-Bashir is reporting that Ovechkin skated on Tuesday morning but left the ice before his teammates started practice.

The Capitals went 4-2-0 in Ovechkin’s previous absence this year.

Despite Coach Bruce Boudreau’s comments that Washington would have to play a more defensive game without Ovechkin, the Caps averaged 3.67 goals/game with a 3-3 over/under mark when he was last out of the lineup.

Good news for the shorthanded Capitals is that Alex Semin and Tom Poti are returning to the lineup.

    Hottest road team

The Calgary Flames have the best road record in the NHL at 10-1-2.

A major reason for the Flames’ success is the resurgent Miikka Kiprusoff. Kiprusoff is sporting a 15-5-3 record, a 2.27 GAA, a .925 save percentage and has registered back to back shutouts.

Scott Cruickshank of the Calgary Herald says that Kiprusoff is playing as well as he did in the 2003-2004 season, when he set a modern-day record for goals-against average at 1.69.

"If he's playing that well again, the league's in trouble -- and the Flames are in good shape," said Blue Jackets (and former Calgary) defenseman Mike Commodore.

The Flames have an over/under record of 3-7-1 in their last 11 road games and 4-11-1 in their last 16 games overall.

    Wild settling down

Michael Russo of the Minnesota Star Tribune described the Wild’s early struggles using the equation: new coach + new players + new philosophy + heavy road schedule = early season struggles.

Russo now sees the Wild developing an identity as a “team of battlers”: motivated newcomers and veteran leaders working hard and functioning as a team.

“We don't have the luxury of having these super-skilled players like the Ovechkins and Crosbys,” said coach Todd Richards. “We have some great players, without question, but our foundation always has to be our work ethic."

After opening the season 1-6-0, the Wild have gone a respectable 9-6-3 in their last 18 games and are 3-0-1 in their last four.

    Thrashing the party

The Thrashers may be the league’s highest-scoring team, but as Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution points out, Atlanta’s recent success has to do with strong goaltending.

Both Johan Hedberg and Ondrej Pavlec rank in the top 10 in save percentage, an important stat for a team that ranks last in the NHL in shots allowed.

“They [Hedberg and Pavlec] have ramped their game up and so have we,” said head coach John Anderson. “We are a little tougher around the net. [The opposition] may get a quality shot, but they are not going to get two or three.”

The Thrashers are 14-7-3 overall, and are 8-1-2 in their last 11 games.

    On schedule

Dec. 4, Colorado Avalanche at Pittsburgh Penguins

The Avs play the Panthers on Wednesday before flying to Pittsburgh to play the Penguins on Thursday. Pittsburgh has been resting since a Monday game against the New York Rangers.

Dec. 5, Vancouver Canucks at Carolina Hurricanes

The good news is you get to play the worst team in the NHL, the Carolina Hurricanes. The bad news? You have to fly across the continent, play games on back to back nights against two of the Eastern Conference’s toughest teams, and then play the ‘Canes after a one-day rest.

Dec. 6, Ottawa Senators at Anaheim Ducks

Ottawa will be playing its final game of a four-game, six-day road trip through California and Arizona. After facing the Coyotes on Saturday the Sens must fly to Anaheim to play a Ducks team that has won six of its last eight at the Pond.

Duke (-4, O/U 135): Duke simply loves the ACC/Big 10 Challenge, as they are a perfect 10-0 all time in the event. The Blue Devils are 4-1 ATS this year, with their only loss being by 1 point. Defense is a huge reason why Duke is undefeated this season. Only 1 opponent has scored more than 62 PTS against them. For the season Duke is only allowing 58 PPG, with a 35% field goal percentage. G Nolan Smith leads Duke with 18 PPG. 2other Blue Devils average more than 15 points, including Kyle Singler. Freshman F Mason Plumlee makes his season debut tonight, as he's expected to play big minutes this season in the paint.

Guards Trevon Hughes and Jason Bohannon combine to average 25 PPG for the Badgers. F Jon Leuer is the other Badger averaging double figures in PTS. The Badgers have struggled shooting from the 3 point line, shooting less than 30% combined as a team. Len's Top 5

Happy Wednesday everyone, here's my Top 5 for December 2, 2009 from Len Berman.

                        1. Quick Hits

Tiger Woods will be cited for careless driving. End of story?
Yankees manager Joe Girardi went to Jets camp to help teach quarterback Mark Sanchez how to slide. What's next, Mariano Rivera to help him throw?
Not a misprint. The Knicks pummeled Phoenix 126-99 to improve their stellar record to 4-14. They're only 10 games out of first place. Then again they've only played 18.
"Old Reliable," Yankees outfielder Tommy Henrich dies at the age of 96. He won 4 World Championships with the Yanks.

                        2. Worst Career Drive

Tiger Woods has never had a worse drive. This one will cost him $164 and 4 points on his license, but no criminal charges. This has to be the most famous case of careless driving in history. And of course Woods will be hounded to say "something," anything. We, the public, are not owed a complete explanation. But since the public fuels his popularity and endorsements Tiger can only hope his silence is golden.
Who isn't silent is another woman claiming to be a mistress. And she comes with props. emails and voice mails. This ain't going away soon, no matter how much Woods stonewalls.

                        3. Racial Profiling

Lets play word association. (Phrase) Racial profiling. (Association) Middle Eastern person detained at the airport. Right? How about NFL racial profiling? Would you believe white running backs? As Sports Illustrated detailed this week there isn't a single starting running back in the NFL who is white. And often times it has nothing to do with ability. Coaches see a white running back and they try to turn him into a linebacker. An NFL running back just HAS TO BE black. As Malcolm Gladwell pointed out in Blink, the fairest way for tryouts to be held for symphony orchestras is to have the performers play behind a screen. That way the conductor can't tell the sex and can't discriminate against women. Too bad they don't have a test like that in football.

                        4. Share and Share Alike

I wonder what some of the highly paid Yankees thought when they received their World Series shares? I mean if you're making $21.6 million (Derek) or $33-million (A-Rod), what do you think when you get a check for $365,052.73. Probably "damn, that's just 180G or so after taxes. Chump change."
One of the greatest teams ever, the 1961 Yankees, got a World Series share of $7389. But Roger Maris, who broke Babe Ruth's home run record that season made $42-thousand. So that $7389 actually meant something.
By the way, a class act. The Angels voted pitcher Nick Adenhart a full playoff share $138,038.51 for his family. Adenhart was killed in a car accident in April.

                        5. Past Glory

And you thought Tiger's alleged girlfriend and the White House gate-crashing blond were one hit wonders. According to US Magazine, Rachel Uchitel, who denies an affair with Tiger Woods, has dated Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez. So says her mom. Talk about a double play.
As for Michaele Salahi, the red-dressed reality show wannabe, I kept waiting for a sports connection. Bingo. She crashed a Washington Redskins game and performed as if she were a Redskins cheerleading alumnus. She wasn't. Next we'll find out she actually shook hands with a Redskins player. Don't they have any security in Washington?

Today in Sports: How'd that work out exactly? Bobby Bonilla signs a record 5-year $29-million contract with the Mets.
Bonus Event: The beginning of lost luggage. LaGuardia Airport opens to commercial traffic 70 years ago today. 1939.
