Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Panthers host the Avalanche, the Mavericks meet the Nets, and the Blue Devils look for a road victory in Wisconsin.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has a dozen games on its schedule for Wednesday, including Dallas at New Jersey. The Mavs (13-5 SU, 11-7 ATS) are coming off a 104-102 win over Philadelphia on Monday, with Dirk Nowitzki scoring 28 points. The Nets (0-17 SU, 5-11-1 ATS) will have interim coach Tom Barrise in charge on Wednesday; newly-hired Kiki Vandeweghe will take over the team for Friday night's game. The Nets can set a record for consecutive season-opening losses on Wednesday.

Also on the NBA schedule for Wednesday: Toronto at Atlanta, New York at Orlando, Milwaukee at Washington, Memphis at Minnesota, Detroit at Chicago, Philadelphia at Oklahoma City, Indiana at Sacramento, Houston at the Clippers, and Phoenix at Cleveland. The Cavaliers (12-5 SU, 8-9 ATS) knocked off Dallas 111-95 at home on Saturday night, with LeBron James and Mo Williams each picking up 25 points in the victory. Anderson Varejao had 15 points in the contest.

As well, there's a battle of ranked teams on the college hoops schedule for Wednesday, with No. 21 Florida State (6-1 SU, 2-2 ATS) at No. 15 Ohio State (5-1 SU, 4-2 ATS). No. 1 Kansas is also in action, as they host Alcorn State, while No. 3 Villanova gets a visit from Drexel, and No. 6 Duke visits Wisconsin. The Blue Devils (6-0 SU, 4-1 ATS) are coming off a 68-59 win over Connecticut in the title game of the Preseason NIT, with Jon Scheyer tossing in 19 points that game.

Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are four games on the NHL schedule for Wednesday, with Tampa Bay at Boston, Vancouver at New Jersey, Nashville at Minnesota, and Colorado at Florida. The 15-8-5 Avalanche are coming off a 3-0 win in Tampa Bay on Monday night, with Craig Anderson making 33 saves for the shutout. Anderson's former team, the 10-12-4 Panthers, lost 4-3 in Atlanta on Monday night, with starting netminder Tomas Vokoun leaving the game with ear lacerations caused by teammate Keith Ballard's stick. Stephen Weiss had two points in that defeat.

Malfunctioning Pistons

Detroit could be without guard Ben Gordon and forward Charlie Villanueva when they face the Bulls in Chicago.

Gordon has missed the Pistons last two games with a sprained left ankle. Villanueva had surgery on Monday to repair a broken nose that he suffered in the win over Atlanta last week. He is being fitted for a mask to protect his face and will be evaluated after Wednesday morning’s shootaround.

Guard Richard Hamilton and forward Tayshaun Prince will both miss the game against the Bulls.

Chicago has gone 9-1 ATS in its last 10 games against Detroit dating back to the 2007 season.

Smashville

The Nashville Predators are tearing through competition recently. In the team’s last 10 games, the Preds have compiled an 8-2 record and been very profitable for their backers, earning 6.31 units on the moneyline.

Minnesota has won three of its last four outings and taken three of the last four games in this series. Marek Zidlicky returned to practice on Tuesday after missing one game with a lower body injury while Kim Johnson and Antti Miettinen are still questionable with the flu.

The Wild are favored at -125 with the total set at 5.

Beehive State showdown missing bees

It may not be a marquee matchup, but for the state of Utah it’s an enormous rivalry game.

The Utah State Aggies will try to hold off the undefeated BYU Cougars in Logan possibly without the services of their third-leading scorer Nate Bendall. Bendall is suffering from an unknown heart condition and is questionable for the game. The forward is averaging 10.6 ppg and 7.4 rpg.

BYU may also be without one of its top scorers on Wednesday. Jackson Emery sustained a foot injury during practice and is questionable for the game. Emery is the Cougs second-leading scorer with a 13.2 ppg average.

Utah State is 5-1 ATS in its last six meetings against BYU.

The Aggies opened as a 1-point favorite over the Cougars.

Big Bucks

Brandon Jennings and the Bucks have recently cooled off after a hot start. Milwaukee is still floating above the .500 water level (9-7), but has dropped four of its last five games and gone 1-4 ATS during that stretch.

Milwaukee has played to the over in nine of its last 10 games and seven straight. The over has also cashed in four of the last six meetings between the Bucks and Wizards.

Michael Redd has missed Milwaukee’s last two games and is out indefinitely with a sore left knee. Guard Luke Ridnour left Monday’s game with a hamstring injury and is listed as questionable for Wednesday.

The Wizards opened as 3-point favorites with a total of 195.5.

Six-pack for Wednesday

-- Big 11 has never won the ACC-Big 11 challenge, going 0-10, but in first six games this year, they're 3-3, with five games left.

-- Falcons cut their kicker and long snapper Tuesday. That should fix all their problems. By the way, Michael Vick comes to town Sunday.

-- Suns came into New York and got smoked, maybe looking ahead to their Wednesday night game with the Cavaliers.

-- Sophomore Drew Gordon, UCLA's third-leading scorer, has left the team and will transfer. Its already been a long season in Westwood.

-- Lane Kiffin on SEC Championship Game: "Florida has better players, Alabama has better coaches." Does this guy ever shut up?

-- June Jones is going back to Hawai'i; his SMU Mustangs got their first bowl bid since 1984, are playing in Hawai'i Bowl Christmas Eve.

Wednesday's List of 13: Grading the AFC teams after 11 games

Ravens-- C-- Picking wrong kicker cost them a game or two, but thats been fixed. Need a big finish to make playoffs.

Bills-- D-- Signed Terrell Owens, fired offensive coordinator, fired the coach, and front office changes are coming. Another dismal failure.

Bengals-- A-- Scored 18 or less points in six of last seven games; they're winning with solid defense. Larry Johnson helped running game in their win against the Browns Sunday.

Browns-- F-- Why would anyone hire Eric Mangini? Housecleaning is in order; problem is, they already owe the previous regime a ton of cash. Their only win was an unwatchable 6-3 verdict in Buffalo.

Broncos-- A+-- Not only did they get draft picks from Bears, but Orton is better than Cutler. Big question is whether they'll sign Orton to a new contract, since he's a free agent this winter. How can they not?

Texans-- D-- Lost three tough games in row to two biggest rivals. This team has never made playoffs; at some point, you just have to win.

Colts-- A+-- Six wins by four or less points. Peyton Manning is so good he turned a coach who was 26-62 at Wake Forest into a "genius".

Jaguars-- C-minus-- Wildly erratic team. Drawing small crowds at home. Playing couple of rookies on offensive line makes it harder.

Chiefs-- D+-- If my team spent a fortune on a QB, I'd expect more than this. RB Charles has prven to be a good find.

Dolphins-- C-- Ronnie Brown's injury is a killer. Have to remember that this team was 1-15 two years ago, so they're still building.

Patriots-- B+-- Still think the failed 4th down gamble at Indy took some of the air of invincibility away from Belichick. Their defense was riddled in the Superdome Monday night, gave up 35 in Indy.

Jets-- C-minus-- Spent fortune on rookie QB who had never played in a game colder than 55 degrees. Coach was chirpy this summer, is quieter now. Hard to get better when you trade lot of your draft choices.

Raiders-- D-- Clueless, but at least they finally sat inaccurate Russell. How does the head coach assault one of his assistants and keep his job?

Steelers-- C-- Lost last three games, last two in OT. Still have a rematch with Ravens. Defending champs are going to struggle to make playoffs.

Chargers-- A-minus-- November Norv is at it again; after slow start, the Bolts are rolling. Attack downfield lot more than most teams.

Titans-- Inc-- F for first six games, A+ for last five. Is it possible for the MVP of the league not to have played in the first six games? Or does he qualify for Comeback Player of the Year? Vince Young is quite a story.

Memphis Grizzlies at Minnesota Timberwolves

Whoa, whoa, whoa. What’s with all this “worst team in history” talk?

The Minnesota Timberwolves may have only two wins on the season, but they just happen to be coming off the biggest of those two victories. Minnesota stunned the Denver Nuggets with a 106-100 win at the Pepsi Center Sunday, covering as a 14.5-point road underdog.

"For us, there's nothing like a winning locker room," coach Kurt Rambis told reporters. "There's a lot of relief in there."

The T-Wolves got a great effort from their entire roster Sunday. All five starters scored in double figures including forward Ryan Gomes, who led the way with 27 points. Small forward Corey Brewer continues to improve and rookie Jonny Flynn’s recent contributions have made Minny fans forget all about that Ricky guy.

Minnesota has won six of the last seven in the series with Memphis, with the Grizzlies taking their first meeting this year. The Timberwolves have covered in four of the last five games against the Grizzlies.

Indiana Pacers at Sacramento Kings

After making a bundle for basketball bettors to start the season, the Indiana Pacers are draining backers’ bankrolls like a trophy wife. Indiana has lost six of its last seven games while covering the spread just once in that span.

The most painful thing for those wagering on the Pacers is the team’s recent pattern of blowing big leads. Indiana gave up a double-digit lead to the Golden State Warriors, watching a 14-point lead turn into a 126-107 loss as a 2.5-point underdog. The Pacers suffered a similar fate against the New York Knicks, losing a 19-point lead in a 110-103 defeat as a 6-point home favorite November 18, which started the team on its current slide.

"A lot of times it's up to the team to sometimes take it to another level, but we haven't been able to do that on a consistent enough basis," coach Jim O'Brien told the Indianapolis Star.

Turnovers have burned Indiana this year. The team ranks among the worst in the league with an average of 15.6 turnovers per game and coughed the ball up 25 times in the loss to Golden State.

Georgia Tech coach Hewitt got to Atlanta because of his success with Siena Saints, who now have their best team since Hewitt left. Saints are disappointing 4-2, losing at Temple, St John's; pegging them as Top 25 team was overly optimistic. Tech is 4-1, losing 63-59 on neutral court to Dayton- they have one of nation's best freshmen in Favors.

Colorado Avalanche at Florida Panthers

The Panthers’ 4-3 loss to the Atlanta Thrashers Monday provided one of the biggest “WTF” moments in recent sports history.

Following a goal from Ilya Kovalchuk, Florida defenseman Keith Ballard, who couldn’t keep the Thrashers’ sniper at bay, slashed his teammate, goaltender Tomas Vokoun across the face with his stick. Ballard was trying to smash his stick across the goal post in frustration but ended up sending Vokoun to the hospital for stitches in his ear.

''There's not a guy who feels worse than he does,'' Panthers' defenseman Bryan Allen told the Miami Herald. ''He means well, he was doing the right thing. He was showing he cares. It was an unfortunate accident, and I feel bad for him. I know he feels 100 times worse than anyone else.''

This black eye is just the cherry on top of Florida’s issues in recent weeks. The Panthers have lost five straight games, managing to score just over two goals a game in that span. They may have to turn to backup goalie Scott Clemmensen against the Avalanche. Clemmensen is just 3-3 since joining Florida and hasn’t won a game since a 2-1 overtime victory against Detroit on November 20.

Vancouver Canucks at New Jersey Devils

To most NHL bettors, Wednesday’s Canucks-Devils tilt pits two of the top goaltenders of the modern era against each other.

But for those hockey fans North of the border, this game could determine who gets the starting nod as Canada’s puck stopper for the upcoming 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.

New Jersey’s Martin Brodeur and Vancouver’s Roberto Luongo will be front and center in this East-West battle, with the eyes of the Olympic selection committee watching closely. However, both men say they are focused on NHL, not international, play right now.

“The matchup is, I’m going to play against the top goalie,” Brodeur told reporters Monday. “That’s the matchup that I’m looking at, not really what the selection will be or who wins that game should be.”

Both goalies have been red-hot in recent games. New Jersey is riding a three-game winning streak in which Brodeur has allowed just three goals on 81 total shots. Luongo has backstopped the Canucks to four wins in their last six games, allowing an average of just over two goals per game in that stretch while facing almost 30 shots a night.

"Is it really going to make a difference in the long run? I don't think so," Luongo told reporters of Wednesday’s outcome. "It's always nice to play a guy like Marty, obviously one of the best of all time. That's what gets me excited more than anything else."

The winner of the starting job for Team Canada is still anyone’s guess. Bettors, however, can be certain that goals will be tough to come by Wednesday night in New Jersey.
