  • Nortcoast 0-12 in NFL

Here is the true story on Northcoast and Phil Steele, which prides itself on its Monday Night Magic plays and of course on the NFL in general:
The last two Sundays they are 0-6 including two bigger plays and on Monday night for the last three Mondays they are 0-6 on sides and totals making them 0-12.
I am sure Phil Steele will mention that they lost on Monday, but will also allude to how good they have been over time and downplay the losing night;he prides himself on how honest he is;lets see if HE says they are 0-12 as I have stated.
The odds are 100% that he will not.

Glad you posted about Phil Steele.
He is among the elite scamdicappers.........he will tell you how great he has been doing even after an 0-12 slide.

Here are some warning signs of a scamdicapper:
    a) he offers guaranteed picks.......(if you lose then the next play is free)
    b) he hypes picks like "G.O.Y." or "Conference game of the month."
    c) he offers "clubs"........which are sets of picks for the same sport such as the "Nevada club" or the "big time play club"......... (he does this because he knows that if he has five clubs and four do horrible.........it does not matter.........he will point to the one that is doing decent and hype that club.........any moron can get lucky with at least one club (or set of picks) at a given point in time..........BUT you will never hear about the losing clubs.
    d) he calls you at home to sell you plays.
    e) posts the winners on his website; but forgets to post the losers.
    f) claims he has inside information.
    g) a variation of "clubs" is posting picks on many different handicapping websites.........of course he will look good on a couple websites because by picking many different games he is bound to get lucky here and there.
    h) he plays many different sports........again giving himself many chances to shine so he can tell you how great he is..........if he plays enough sports........he will get lucky with one or two.
    i) says he has an awsome winning percentage like 75-80%..........this is unrealistic over a sustained period of time!
    j) plays the "angles" game...........a fairly new marketing ploy with the benefit of hindsight..........will say this certain play has gone 20-0 and and now "one of these games has come up."........with the power of computers this has become easier to do...........he will not tell you the parameters he has used but it could be something silly like: the last twenty times a home team lost by more than twenty points they will cover the spread their very next home game.........is this a good reason to make a wager?........I THINK NOT!

I COULD GO ON AND ON BUT NEED TO GET SOME SLEEP.

I hope my post was helpful to at least one person. Please do not fall for these SCAMDICAPPER PLOYS!

    Take care and good betting!

        In defense of Phil Steele

        Savage --

I am not a cheerleader for Northcoast/Phil Steele but certainly you must know that there are far, FAR worse services than Northcoast. Guys who will do or say ANYTHING to separate you from your cash, and Phil Steele is not in that category.

If you called his comp line yesterday he came out and said he had a horrible Sunday and went 0-3. How many service operators would do that? Very, very few, if any. In general, he is far more honest about his record than most.

Also, you forgot to mention that, including pre-season, Northcoast had not posted a losing week in NFL in 2003 until weekend before last. BTW, most who bet the Giants against the Jets laid 3, so that would have been a push, not a loss. So is it really fair to knock someone for a couple of losing weeks when for the entire season he is still showing a profit???

Bottom line: You can make the argument that Phil Steele is a mediocre handicapper, you can say he overcharges for his picks, but to give him the odious label of "Scamdicapper" is going a bit too far, in my opinion.

Mike Schmidt-Phil Steele/Northcoast is not a scamdicapper, and I have always made it a point to say he is honest.
I call his comp. line every day for the comp. picks as a matter of fact.
If he is 0-11-1, so be it rather than 12.
I still feel that unless of the garble in his newsletter is of limited value and does not have a direct impact on outcome of the game.
His systems, trends, etc. work for a while, and then things even out.
His college record this year stinks, and the pros are starting to even out as shown in above paragraph.
Northcoast over time is ok but nothing special, and even though his picks are given out for free on the internet, I feel his yearly and weekly rates are way out of line.
The best cappers are here and are free.
I'll say this-Mr. Steele is a great marketer and knows how to play on people's sympathies and to spin his record to put him in the best light.
My opinion is that in a few years, once more and more folks have computers and realize that his picks as well as just about
everyone else's are available for free, that services and newsletters will start to fold;word spreads fast.

            Well put savage

I have no idea how any of these services make any money. Hardly any of them can hit more than people posting there plays in here. Northcaost always talks around the day he had if its bad with how well he has done in the past. I have hardly ever seen him hit 55% in any season and combined NFL & NCAA never about 50%.

I like the free info you get from Phil Steele on his comp lines. His newsletter is packed with info, and his picks used to be good. Lately, he has sucked. I appreciate all the viewpoints on here from everybody regarding touts. But Steele is an honest guy. He just charges too much for some awful picks . Maybe awful is a bit harsh, but going 0-6 the last two weeks in the Niffle really does suck.

I hope he rebounds, because I always liked and respected the guy.
Please don't question my record or I will leave!!!!

I did not mean to put words in your mouth about Phil Steele being a scamdicapper. Also I am not here to bad mouth anyone.

However, it is my opinion (and only mine) that Phil Steele is indeed a SCAMDICAPPER. He qualifies as one in my book because:
                a) he is a master of marketing and hype
                b) he does not even bet his own picks (NEVER, EVER)..........that says a lot when you advertise you are the best and don't even believe in yourself enough to bet the picks you sell!
                c) he is another of the most overated of all time, second only to ??..........I know who, if you want to know post back and I will tell you.

Phil does put out some nice publications with actual sports stats but that does not make up for his hyped "game of the year" and so forth. HONEST CAPPERS do not have such plays!

In conclusion........Phil has been on Larry Grossman's radio show in Vegas..........Larry tries to make guys like Phil Steele to be real life bettors when in fact they are only touts selling hype!

There are worse scamdicappers than Phil but don't let his so-called "honesty" fool you!

                Sincerely,
                John (bennojd)

Bennojd-I agree with a lot of what you say.
I do think he is honest though, stating his record every day for what transpired for the day before.
That being said, I believe that he states it as much to draw potential subscriber's sympathies as much to show he is a nice guy.
That being said, I still believe it to be a virtue unlike a lot of others who only talk about their winning days.
Phil probably doesn't bet much himself,as he is too smart to realize that over time he is better served just collecting the fees than actually playing most of the games himself-again, can you blame him?
The real scammers in my book are the outright liars and bs artists like Jack Price, Fixer, Gaston, Feiner, Demarco, etc.
Please tell me the name of guy you wanted me to guess.

The most immoral sports handicapper of all time is??
                        Jim Feist

There are some guys trying to pass Jim Fiest but I will not mention them now...........maybe in a future post.

Phil Steele is a saint compared to Feist.

How could i not know that?
Feist-a very slick marketer-knows exactly what to say, how to say it and when to say it. No disagreement here.
He and his con artists in his clique have it all figured out to be sure that someone in their group is always winning-collusion if you get my drift.
