    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, September 25

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Red Sox begin a series at Yankee Stadium, while the Rockies host the Cardinals, and the Cubs take on the Giants.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

It's Missouri at Nevada in the only college football matchup on the Friday slate. The 3-0 Tigers blasted cupcake opponent Furman last week, getting three touchdown passes from Blaine Gabbert in a 52-12 victory. The 0-2 Wolf Pack seek their first win of the season on Friday; they fell 35-20 to Colorado State last time out. The Tigers are 7-point road favorites, with the game's total at 59 points.

As well, there are two Canadian Football League games on tap for Friday, with Montreal at Hamilton and British Columbia at Calgary. The oddsmakers like the first-place Alouettes in that first matchup, listing them as 4-point road favorites (with the total for the game at 49 points). The Stampeders are then pegged as 8-point home favorites against the Lions, with the total for that game at 54.5 points.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Jon Lester (14-7, 3.33 ERA) takes on CC Sabathia (18-7, 3.31 ERA) on Friday night as the Red Sox and Yankees renew their rivalry in New York. Lefthander Lester has been money in the bank for Boston lately; the team has managed to pick up the victory in each of his last seven trips to the mound. Lefthander Sabathia has been racking up the wins as well over the past two months; New York last lost a Sabathia outing way back on July 28 when he fell to Tampa Bay.

Also on the American League schedule for Friday: Baltimore at Cleveland, Tampa Bay at Texas, Minnesota at Kansas City, Detroit at the White Sox, Oakland at the Angels, and Seattle at Toronto. Ace Roy Halladay (15-10, 3.01 ERA) gets the ball for Toronto in that last matchup; righthander Halladay fell to the Rays last time out despite giving up just two runs over seven innings. Doug Fister (2-3, 4.37 ERA) will try to snap his two-game losing streak for the Mariners.

Over in the National League on Friday night the Cardinals will turn to Chris Carpenter (16-4, 2.34 ERA) in their road game against the Rockies and Aaron Cook (10-6, 4.47 ERA). Righthander Carpenter blanked the Cubs on eight hits over eight innings last time out, but had to settle for a no-decision in a 2-1 St. Louis win. Righthander Cook is slated to come off the disabled list for Friday's matchup; Cook's strained shoulder has kept him out of action since late August.

Rounding out the NL schedule for Friday: the Dodgers at Pittsburgh, Atlanta at Washington, the Mets at Florida, Cincinnati at Houston, Philadelphia at Milwaukee, San Diego at Arizona, and the Cubs at San Francisco. Carlos Zambrano (8-6, 3.91 ERA) will take on Tim Lincecum (14-6, 2.47 ERA) in the Chicago/San Fran contest. Righthander Zambrano has just one win in his last eight starts, while righthander Lincecum has two wins over his past eight outings.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

Finally, the WNBA continues its conference finals on Friday, with Detroit at Indiana and Los Angeles at Phoenix. The Shock took a 1-0 lead in their Eastern Conference series on Wednesday night, with Shavonte Zellous pouring in a game-high 23 points for Detroit in that 72-56 home win. Out west it was the Mercury who drew first blood on Wednesday, winning Game 1 over the Sparks by a score of 103-94 on the road. Diana Taurasi poured in 28 points for Phoenix.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Friday, September 25

      Stop trying

Nevada head coach Chris Ault is hoping his QB Colin Kaepernick keeps things simple against Missouri Friday night. The Wolf Pack's playcaller has four interceptions this season and has fumbled the ball three times in his last nine games going back into last year.

Ault believes Kaepernick is trying to do too much and points to last weekend's loss to Colorado State, when he had two passes picked off and fumbled on a pitch.

"Kap read the blitzes. There were 28 of them and he got it every time except one," Ault told reporters. "That's very good. And I'm really pleased with the way he's delivering the ball.

"Last weekend, physically he just didn't play well. It happens."

The Wolf Pack are 7-point home underdogs Friday.

      Mizzou moves

The Missouri depth chart is getting a face lift heading into Friday's showdown with Nevada. Head coach Gary Pinkel is starting Beau Brinkley at tight end instead of Andrew Jones, who has recorded six catches for 34 yards in the first three games.

On special teams, Munir Prince will return kicks in place of injured safety Jasper Simmons. Prince has had one kick return, picking up 30 yards. Simmons has returned seven kicks for a total of 163 yards this season.

      Don't count on Donovan

Oddsmakers held off posting a line for Sunday's Philadelphia-Kansas City game due to the status of Eagles QB Donovan McNabb. McNabb sat out practice again Thursday with a busted rib, making it more likely that he'll sit again this weekend.

Backup Kevin Kolb will get the nod again if McNabb does sit. However, third-stringer Michael Vick will be available. Philadelphia coach Andy Reid told the media that Vick isn't ready to start, but the former Pro-Bowl QB had different thoughts. Vick told CBS he thought he'd be a starting quarterback when plotting his return to the NFL earlier this summer.

Books have still tagged the Eagles as 9-point home favorites against the Chiefs. The total is listed at 41 points.

      Giant problems

Following a huge win over the Cowboys last Sunday night, the Giants could have some major holes to fill heading into Week 3.

Safety Kenny Phillips is out for the season after injuring his knee. Phillips had two interceptions in New York's victory over Dallas. The team picked up safety Aaron Rouse off waivers to fill the gap in the depth chart.

On the other side of the ball, receiver Mario Manningham could miss time after hurting his shoulder. He had a breakout game against the Cowboys, catching 10 balls for 150 yards and a touchdown. He was limited during practice Wednesday and is currently questionable for this Sunday's game against Tampa Bay. Fellow WR Domenik Hixon is also questionable for Sunday after turning his knee against Dallas.

This news comes on the heels of DE Justin Tuck's shoulder injury suffered against the Cowboys He is also questionable for this weekend.

      Ibanez under the weather

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Raul Ibanez was scratched from Thursday's game with a stomach virus, according to MLB.com's Todd Zolecki. Ibanez was replaced by Ben Francisco.

Ibanez has been one of the Phillies' best bats this season after joining the World Series champs from Seattle. He is hitting .277 with 89 RBI and 33 home runs. Ibanez was 2-for-3 with a home run in Philly's 7-6 loss to Florida Wednesday.

      Jayhawks infighting

According to the local media in Lawerence, there is a long-running turf war going on between the Kansas Jayhawks football and basketball teams.

The two squads have clashed three times in the past week, most recently early Wednesday morning. Accounts from numerous sources on campus have KU guard Tyshawn Taylor sidelined with a dislocated finger from throwing a punch and either Marcus or Markieff Morris tossing a KU football player down a flight of stairs. The police have been called to the campus three times but no charges have been laid.

The Jayhawks football team hosts Southern Mississippi as 13.5-point favorites this Saturday.

      Fancy footwork

Mixed martial arts star Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell advanced into the next round of ABC's Dancing With The Stars as did Hall of Fame WR Michael Irvin.

"I haven't been that nervous in probably 15, 20 years," Liddell told reporters. "I'm known for not getting nervous before fights and I had so much adrenalin pumping when I went out there."

Liddell is priced at +650 to win this season's dance competition while Irvin is listed at +350 with betED.com.

      Notable quote

"I'll still hit him. I'll just get fined. There's nothing I can do about it. It's either that or try to hurt somebody. So are you going to fine me, or do you want me to end someone's career? I'd rather take a fine than try to end somebody's career, so I'm not going to change." – Steelers WR Hines Ward, when asked about his crushing hit on Bengals linebacker Keith Rivers last season. The hit, which broke Rivers jaw, has prompted the “Hines Ward Rule” which outlaws high, blind-side hits.

        Six-pack for Friday

Some more NFL trends for Week 3.........

-- Redskins are 3-9-2 vs spread in last 14 non-divisional road games.

-- Eagles covered six of their last eight games as a home favorite.

-- Buccaneers covered one of their last six home games.

-- Ravens covered six of last seven divisional games.

-- Saints covered five of their last six as a road favorite.

-- Jaguars are 12-4-1 vs spread as a road dog in divisional play.

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday's List of 13: Things I'm Looking for this weekend.........

        13) Can Cal win at Oregon the week before USC comes to Berkeley?

        12) Will TCU save face for the Mountain West the week after Utah and BYU both lost non-conference games?

        11) How will Michigan State QB Cousins bounce back after throwing a hideous INT at the end of the Spartans' 33-30 loss at Notre Dame?

        10) How will South Florida do in their long-awaited first meeting with Florida State, with former backup QB Daniels now the full-time starter?

        9) How will Washington Huskies backup the USC upset when they go to Stanford to play the improved Cardinal?

        8) Just want to sit a comfortable chair, get a pizza and settle in for four hours of Texas Tech-Houston. Should be fun.

        7) How will the Jets play now that they've beaten the Patriots? Titans are a wounded 0-2 team that desperately needs a win.

        6) Can Seneca Wallace lead an NFL offense? I'm skeptical.

        5) Who knew 49ers-Vikings would be the marquee game of Week 3?

        4) Oakland will be tied for first place if they beat the Broncos Sunday, but JaMarcus Russell better complete more than 7 of 24 passes.

        3) Can Arizona hold the Colts under 10 yards a play? Miami couldn't, but Indy is travelling on short work week. Interesting game.

        2) I'm looking for the Rams to upset Green Bay for their first win.

        1) How will Michael Vick do in his return to real NFL action? Eagles are banged up on offense, they'll need his contributions.

          SCOREBOARD

          Friday, September 25

Boston at New York (7:05 p.m. EDT). The AL East rivals begin a weekend series in New York with the Yankees having already clinched a playoff berth after missing out last season for the first time in 14 years.

          STARS

          Thursday

-Felix Hernandez and Josh Wilson, Mariners. Hernandez had a season-high 11 strikeouts and Wilson hit a tiebreaking two-run triple in the eighth inning of a 5-4 win over the Blue Jays.

          - Justin Verlander, Tigers, struck out 11 in seven innings while Detroit handed Cleveland its 11th straight loss, 6-5.

-David Ortiz, Red Sox, homered and drove in three runs, helping the Red Sox move closer to the postseason with a 10-3 win over the Royals.

-Rafael Furcal, Dodgers, hit a go-ahead homer in the eighth inning, and Los Angeles beat the Nationals 7-6.

-Jimmy Rollins, Phillies, capped a six-run fifth inning with a three-run homer to help Philadelphia beat Milwaukee 9-4.

-Nick Hundley, Padres, homered to start the comeback and drove in the tiebreaking run with an eighth-inning single, and San Diego dealt the NL wild card-leading Rockies a disheartening 5-4 loss.

-Jeff Baker, Cubs, hit a two-out, two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning and Chicago staved off elimination in the NL Central for a day by beating the Giants 3-2.

          SECOND CENTURY MARK

Los Angeles beat Washington 7-6 to hand the Nationals their 100th loss of the season. The Nationals, who were 59-102 last season, are the first NL franchise to lose 100 games in consecutive seasons since the San Diego Padres, who dropped 102 in both 1973 and '74.

          SEASON OVER

Rich Harden is done for the season. The Chicago Cubs right-hander requested that he not pitch again, manager Lou Piniella said. Harden, who has been limited to long toss after complaining of arm fatigue, has struggled with high pitch counts and failed to make it past the fifth inning in his last four starts. Eligible for free agency after the World Series, Harden is 9-9 with a 4.09 ERA in 26 starts.

          LOSING LIKE IT WAS 1931

The Indians lost their 11th straight, 6-5 to Detroit. They haven't dropped 11 in a row since setting a club record with 12 consecutive losses in 1931. They can match that mark Friday when Baltimore, losers of seven straight, opens a weekend series at Progressive Field.

          RECORD K

Oakland's Brett Anderson's strikeout of Craig Gentry to start the third inning of a 12-3 rout of Texas was his 142nd of the season, moving him past Rick Langford for most by a rookie in Oakland history. Langford struck out 141 in 1977.

          REVERSAL OF FORTUNE

The Reds, who beat Pittsburgh 4-1, are 15 games ahead of the Pirates in the NL Central standings after falling behind them following a loss on Aug. 22. Since then, fourth-place Cincinnati is 21-10 - although it remains only one loss away from a ninth consecutive losing season - and Pittsburgh is 5-25. Five more losses by the Pirates will give them 100 on the year.

          SPEAKING

"I was just hoping to make contact. I'm not sure I've ever made contact off him before. He's got great stuff.'' - Jeff Baker on hitting a two-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning off Brian Wilson to give the Cubs a 3-2 win over the host Giants. Baker was 0 for 3 against Wilson before the homer.

          SEASONS

          Sept. 25

            This Day in Baseball

On September 25 in Baseball History...

1922 - The Giants beat St. Louis 5-4 in ten innings to clinch John McGraw's eighth pennant. It the tenth pennant for the Giants in 41 years in the National League.

1932 - Jimmie Foxx hits his 58th home run in the last game of the season to finish just shy of Ruth's 1927 record of 60.

1954 - Early Wynn two-hits the Tigers 11-1 for his league-leading 23rd win as the Indians notch their 111th victory, a new American League record, eclipsing the 110 wins of the 1927 Yankees.

1955 - Detroit outfielder Al Kaline becomes the youngest batting champ in history, as he takes the American League crown at age twenty.

1960 - For the first time since 1927, the Pirates are headed for the World Series. A gigantic torchlight victory parade in Pittsburgh's Golden Triangle at midnight celebrates the pennant.

1961 - Roger Maris tied Babe Ruth's 34-year-old record with his 60th homer, off Baltimore's Jack Fisher.

1965 - Another Kansas City publicity stunt makes the great Satchel Paige baseball's oldest performer. At ffity-nine, Paige hurls the first three innings, garners one strikeout, and allows just one hit, to Carl Yastrzemski, in his first Major League appearance since 1953. The Red Sox jump on reliever Don Mossi for a 5-2 win.

1981 - Nolan Ryan of the Houston Astros became the first player to pitch five no-hitters, hurling a 5-0 victory over Los Angeles at the Astrodome.

1983 - Bob Forsch of the St. Louis Cardinals pitched the second no-hitter of his career, defeating Montreal 3-0.

1986 - Houston's Mike Scott pitches a 2-0 no-hitter against the Giants at the Astrodome, clinching the National League West title for the Astros. It is the first time a division has ever been decided by a no-hitter, and the third consecutive game in which Astros pitchers have allowed two hits or less.

1989 - Wade Boggs becomes the first player in Major League history to achieve both 200 hits and 100 walks in four consecutive seasons. It is his seventh straight 200-hit season overall, extending his own modern Major League record.

The Expos right-hander fans nine Marlins in a 3-2 victory to become the first pitcher in a quarter-century with 300 strikeouts and an ERA under 2.00 (Martinez finishes with an National League best 1.90 mark). The last time two pitchers fanned 300 in a season was 1972 when Steve Carlton and Nolan Ryan turned the trick.

1998 - Curt Schilling became the fifth pitcher ever to strike out 300 batters in consecutive seasons when he fanned Kevin Orie in the seventh inning of Philadelphia's 4-3 loss to Florida in the first game of a doubleheader.

                  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
                  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minnesota Twins at Kansas City Royals (-104, 8.5)

Sharp bettors know when the party is over and bail on a team before a hot streak comes to an end.

And then there are those types of parties, like the one going on in the Minnesota Twins locker room, that run well into October. With it still being September, Minnesota remains one of the hottest plays in baseball.

The Twins are 13-8 this month but have won nine of their last 11 contests. The always-lethal combo of hot hitting and lights-out pitching has pushed Minnesota to within 2.5 games of the Detroit Tigers in the American League Central. The team is coming off a three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox in which they outscored their divisional rivals 23-12.

"We have to win, I mean, every game. We have to figure out a way to win each and every night," first baseman Michael Cuddyer told the media after hitting a fifth-inning home run Tuesday. "It just goes to show you how relentless this team is. Tonight we needed to score runs, and we did. We figured it out. Tomorrow hopefully we can come out and figure out a new way to win."

Minnesota has a 7-5 record against the Royals this season. And while the pitching hasn’t been the best against Kansas City, the Twins bats have abused the Royals. They have a .272 BA and have averaged almost six runs per game versus K.C.

                  Pick: Minnesota

St. Louis Cardinals at Colorado Rockies (+139, 8.5)

The National League Central title is just at the Cardinals' fingers. However, like bettors have seen in the past, clinching isn’t always that easy.

St. Louis failed to clinch the division against the Houston Astros Wednesday night, registering just seven hits in a 3-0 loss. The Cardinals could clinch the Central if the Cubs lose to San Francisco Thursday, but the team was rattled after its poor performance Wednesday night.

"I'm disappointed," manager Tony La Russa told reporters. "The Brewers beat the Cubs. We had a chance to have a perfect night, and when you don't do it, it's disappointing. Otherwise you don't care. So we're all disappointed."

The pressure of clinching has gotten to the Red Birds in past seasons. St. Louis has been one of the worst teams in the final stretch of the season over the last few seasons. Since 2006, the Cardinals are just 37-48 in September and are 12-9 this season after splitting their last 10 games.

                  Pick: Colorado +139

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                    Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Streaking

                    Javier Vazquez, Atlanta Braves

The Braves right-hander is all about the goose egg in recent starts. In his last five trips to the hill, Vazquez has three shutout efforts including his most recent appearance.

Vazquez went seven innings, allowing only three hits in a 6-4 win over Philadelphia that was nearly spoiled by the bullpen. In his last three starts, he is 3-0 with a 0.78 ERA and has a strikeout-to-walk count of 23-to-7.

                    Jon Lester, Boston Red Sox

Lester has won four straight decisions and hasn’t tasted defeat since the middle of July.

After posting back-to-back shutouts, the youngster’s latest effort seems a little ho-hum. Lester lasted six innings, giving up just three earned runs for his ninth quality start in a row. During that span, the BoSox lefty has totaled 61 strikeouts to just 16 base-on balls.

                    Slumping

                    Fausto Carmona, Cleveland Indians

If you look up the definition of “Flash in the Pan”, there will be a picture of Carmona.

The Tribe’s right-hander is having his worst season in the majors since breaking out back in 2007 with 19 wins. Carmona’s most recent effort produced eight runs on 10 hits in just under six innings. That marked his third straight loss and dropped his season record to 3-12.

Carmona has been especially stinky in September. He is 0-3 with a ghastly 13.89 ERA in just under 12 innings of work.

                    Doug Fister, Seattle Mariners

The M’s struggling right-hander has been beat up bad in his last two times toeing the rubber.

Fister ran into the buzz saw known as the New York Yankees in his most recent start, allowing six runs on nine hits including two home runs in just four innings. The start before that, he got lit up by the Texas Rangers, who knocked Fister for five runs on 10 hits, two of which left the ballpark, in under five innings.

Fister doesn’t catch a break Friday, going up against the Toronto Blue Jays, who have been tearing the cover off the ball in their last three games. Fister has served up 10 home runs in his nine games this season. Toronto is sixth in the bigs with 185 big flys.

Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees [7:05 PM ET]

Red Sox (-$1.20, O/U 9.5 under -$1.20): The Red Sox have lost six of the last seven times they’ve faced New York, including the past four at Yankee Stadium. Jon Lester (14-7, 3.33 ERA) hopes to change that. Only once has the left-hander allowed more than three earned runs in his last 20 starts, going 11-2 during this time frame. This will be Lester’s fourth start this season versus the Yankees, a team he is 1-0 against with a 2.70 ERA. Boston is 39-16 in Lester’s past 55 starts, including winning in his last five road outings. Lester is 8-4 with a 3.53 ERA in his 17 away starts. Victor Martinez is riding a 23-game hitting streak with 16 RBIs during the streak. Dustin Pedroia has a 16-game hitting streak. The under is 15-6-1 in Lester’s last 22 starts versus a team with a winning record. Boston is 10-2 in its last 12 games as road chalk.

The Red Sox are 43-20 in their last 63 during the first game of a series.

                              Key Injuries - None

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side of the Day)

Yankees: The Yankees have already clinched the American League East. They are 46-16 in their last 62 home contests. New York is 11-3 in its last 14 games as an underdog. The Yankees didn’t open the favorite because Jon Lester is an outstanding pitcher and Joba Chamberlain (8-6, 4.73 ERA) is going through a tough stretch. Chamberlain has made five starts since the Yankees started limiting his innings and the results haven’t been good. Chamberlain has allowed 14 earned runs on 23 hits during these abbreviated five starts spanning just 16 innings for a 7.87 ERA. He is 1-1 versus Boston with a 5.06 ERA in three starts this season. Unlike Boston, the Yankees were idle on Thursday after consecutive highly-satisfying one-run road victories against the Angels. The Yankees are hoping to get back catcher Jorge Posada, who suffered a bruised right foot on Tuesday.

The Under has cashed 7 of the past nine times the Yankees have faced an opponent with a winning record.

Key Injuries - Jorge Posada (foot) is questionable.
                              Nick Swisher (knee) is questionable.

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 4
