            Thursday's games

NC State covered just four of last 19 as a home favorite; they lost 34-0 to Gamecocks LY (+14), completing 5-20 passes for 49 yards. Wolfpack covered just three of last ten non-ACC games. South Carolina is 11-15 vs spread in non-SEC games since '02, 4-5-1 in last ten on road-- their SEC opener at Georgia is next week. Both teams have soph QBs and three of LY's starters on offensive line back this season.

Utah won its last 11 games vs Utah State, winning last five by average score of 44-8; Utes have new starting QB and only 12 starters back, but they're 21-12 vs spread in last 33 home games, 8-3 vs spread in last 11 games in this series. Aggies have new coach, 16 starters back- they lost last five visits here by average of 17 points. Utes won 58-10 last year.

Oregon has new coach, only nine starters back from LY; they lost six of top 10 guys on OL, but are 16-11 vs spread on road since '04. Boise St. (+10) won 37-32 in Eugene two years ago, passing for 286 yards. Ducks covered 14 of last 22 non-league games, are 9-5 in last 14 as a road dog. Boise is 10-6 as home favorite under Peterson. Neither team has senior starter on OL, but lefty soph Moore started at QB all last year.

North Texas is 8-39 SU last four years, 11-21 vs spread as road dog the last six years- they have all five starters back on OL, but have new QB, who happens to be the coach's son. Ball State has new coach, new QB and only four starters back on offense- they're 11-5 vs spread as a home favorite since '02. Mean Green has veteran OL with 103 career starts.

Troy covered seven of last nine tries as road favorite- this is same team that led 31-3 in third quarter at LSU LY, so they have talent, but they're also playing at Florida next year, could be looking ahead. Bowling Green covered six of last seven as home dog, but this is first time they've been home dog in few years. Falcons have senior QB with 25 career starts, but have only three starters back on defense, and a new coach.

            Friday's games

Tulsa won its last four games vs Tulane by average score of 45-12, with last two wins here by 38-14/49-25 scores; Golden Hurricane is just 6-9 as a road favorite since 2006, 7-12 in last 19 road games overall, but they also covered 11 of last 17 non-league games. Tulane is 6-15-1 vs spread in last 22 home games, 4-9-1 in last 14 as home dog, 8-23 in C-USA tilts but they do have three starters back on offensive line.

What Bettors Need to Know - Thursday
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

South Carolina Gamecocks at North Carolina State Wolfpack (-5, 46.5)

The one-time rivals (met annually from 1968 to 1991) are squaring off again after last year's 34-0 victory by the Gamecocks in Columbia.

The fortunes of South Carolina (7-6, 5-6-1 ATS in 2008) appear to be squarely on the shoulders of sophomore quarterback Stephen Garcia. The departures of WR Kenny Mckinley and TE Jared Cook won't help an offense (six returning starters) that led the nation in interceptions (27) a year ago. On defense (five returning starters), two starting defensive linemen have been suspended for the Gamecocks but the unit has some depth up front.

For North Carolina State (6-7, 9-2-1 ATS in 2008) and second-year head coach Tom O' Brien, the mission is to build on last year's strong finish. Sophomore QB Russell Wilson (17 TDs, 1 INT in 2008) keyed NC State's surge with a stellar freshman campaign. Senior RB Toney Baker (led team in rushing in 2006) has worked his way back to the starting lineup after missing most of the last two years. Like the offense, the defense returns seven starters from last year.

              Line movement

The Wolfpack opened as 4-point favorites with a total of 44.5. North Carolina State has moved up to a 5-point choice with the total now up to 46.5.

              Trends

Steve Spurrier is 28-22 (24-20-2 ATS) at South Carolina with a 4-0 (2-2 ATS) mark in season openers.

              Weather

The forecast calls for a high of 79 degrees with a 20 percent chance of rain in Raleigh, NC.

Troy Trojans at Bowling Green Falcons (+7, 56)

Troy (8-5, 7-5 ATS in 2008) returns seven starters on offense after ranking second in the conference in total offense in 2008. Senior QB Levi Brown (15 TDs, 3 INTS in 2008), 1,000 yard back DuJuan Harris and wideout Jerrel Jernigan form a dynamic trio for head coach Larry Blakeney. The top defense in the Sun Belt in 2008 returns six starters but none in the secondary.

Former Tennessee offensive coordinator Dave Clawson is set to debut as head coach of the Falcons (6-6, 7-4 ATS in 2008). He has eight returning starters on offense to work with, including All-MAC QB Tyler Sheehan (43 TDs, 20 INTs in last two seasons). Clawson is expected to add a little more running to the offense to aid Sheehan. It could be a long night on defense (second in MAC in total defense in 2008) with only three starters back in the fold.

              Line movement

Troy began as a 6-point road favorite with the total at 55.5. The Trojans are now favored by a touchdown while the total is up a half a point to 56.

              Trends

Troy is 22-13 ATS in the last three years. Bowling Green is 15-8 ATS in the last two years with opening victories at Minnesota (2007) and Pittsburgh (2008) as 14-point underdogs. The Trojans are 13-5 ATS in their last 18 road games while the Falcons are just 2-14 ATS in their last 16 home games.

              Weather

The forecast calls for a high of 78 degrees in Bowling Green, OH.

North Texas Mean Green at Ball State Cardinals (-16.5, 59.5)

North Texas (1-11, 4-8 ATS in 2008) head coach Todd Dodge will turn to his son Riley, a redshirt freshman, to take over the starting quarterback duties in 2009. The coach-QB duo won a state high school title in Texas in 2006. While solid RB Cam Montgomery (928 yards, 9 TDs in 2008) is one of eight returning starters on offense, WR Casey Fitzgerald has departed after leading the nation in receptions in each of the last two years. The defense (last in the nation in total and scoring defense in 2008) can't get any worse and has nine returning starters.

After serving as the team's offensive coordinator the past four seasons, Stan Parrish steps into the head coaching spot in 2009. Ball State (12-2, 8-4-1 ATS in 2008) will also go with a redshirt freshman at quarterback to open the season after the departure of standout QB Nate Davis. Senior RB MiQuale Lewis (school record 1,736 rush yards in 2008) will take some of the pressure off of QB Kelly Page as one of four returning offensive starters. An average defense from a year ago brings back seven starters.

              Line movement

The home squad opened up as a 19.5-point choice with a total of 59.5. While the total has held up, the Cardinals are down to 16.5-point favorites.

              Trends

North Texas is 7-40 (17-29 ATS) since 2005. Ball State is 19-9-1 ATS in its last 29 booked games.

The forecast calls for a high of 80 degrees in Muncie, IN.

Utah State Aggies at Utah Utes (-20.5, 52)

Former Utes defensive coordinator Gary Anderson is now in charge of the Utah State (3-9, 7-4-1 ATS in 2008) program. Ten starters are back on offense, including versatile QB Diondre Borel (led team in passing and rushing in 2008). The defense (seven returning starters) will need the expertise of Anderson after allowing 35 points per game a year ago.

With a pair of perfect campaigns over the last five years, Utah (13-0, 8-3-1 ATS in 2008) will look to gain some more national respect in 2009. Head coach Kyle Whittingham will not announce his new starting QB prior to kickoff but indications point to JuCo transfer Terrance Cain stepping into the big void left by previous signal-caller Brian Johnson. While there are only four returning starters on offense, a solid defense has seven starters back in the fold but defensive end Koa Misi is on the shelf with an injury.

              Line movement

The Utes opened as 23.5-point favorites with a total of 52.5. Utah is down to a 20.5-point choice with the total now at 52.

              Trends

With the exception of consecutive wins by Utah State in 1996-97, the Utes have won every meeting in the annual series since 1988. Utah has won by an average score of 44-8 against the Aggies in their last five meetings. Whittingham is 37-14 (25-20-4 ATS) as head coach of the Utes. Utah State is 15-55 since 2003.

              Weather

The forecast calls for a high of 93 degrees in Salt Lake City, UT.

Game of the day: Oregon at Boise State
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oregon Ducks at Boise State Broncos (-3.5, 63.5)

                Great Expectations

If Charles Dickens was alive today, he’d be using the Boise State Broncos as inspiration for an updated version of this classic book. The Broncos enter the season No. 14 in the AP poll, which is the highest preseason ranking in school history.

Some are saying that BSU could go undefeated and be a BCS bowl buster with the schedule it has. Phil Steele lists the Broncos’ slate 117th overall in terms of ease, with road trips to Tulsa and Fresno State representing their toughest games away from the smurf turf.

The squad returns six starters on offense including second team All-WAC quarterback Kellen Moore.

The sophomore threw for 3,486 yards last season with 25 touchdowns and only 10 interceptions. Moore threw for 386 yards and three touchdowns last season against the Ducks in Oregon.

Boise State supporters will be looking for a bigger contribution from the ground game. The unit earned just 38 yards on 35 carries in last year’s game.

                The unknown

Oregon will be playing its first game under new head coach Chip Kelly who moved from the offensive coordinator position. Kelly’s offense produced 41.9 points per game and had a 7-4-2 over/under mark last season, but the group returns only four starters.

Quarterback Jeremiah Masoli threw for 1,744 yards and 13 touchdowns last year. He started the last 10 games of the season and was one of three to take snaps under center. He’ll rely on help from 1,000-yard rusher LeGarrette Blount along with top wideout targets Jeff Maehl and Ed Dickson to keep up the offence moving.

                In the trenches

First-team All-WAC defensive end Ryan Winterswyk is Boise State’s only returning starter on defense. He’ll be squaring off against an O-line returning one starter and four of its top 10 on the 2008 depth chart.

Senior Will Tukuafu is Oregon’s lone returning starter on the defensive line. He will have a tough time penetrating the right side of the Boise State line with junior Kevin Sapien and Sophomore Nate Potter returning.

                Ducks talking a big game

Oregon has had plenty of time to focus on avenging its loss last year to the Broncos. Masoli, who left the game due to a concussion, called the loss “embarrassing” and predicted that the Ducks would “take it to them” this year. Tailback LeGarrette Blount told Sports Illustrated that they “owe [Boise State] a (butt)-whuppin.”

The game had a chippiness to it with both teams picking up late hits. Oregon was especially angry about one that injured Masoli and forced him to leave. Boise State safety Jeron Johnson was ejected from the game because of another late hit.

                Line movement

Boise State opened up as a 6-point favorite with the spread dropping down to 4.5 before briefly going to 5.

Boise State is now a 4 or 4.5-point favorite depending on the book you use.

The total opened up at 60.5 and has crept up to 64

                Trends

The Oregon Ducks are 8-1 in season openers with six of those wins coming against BCS schools. The team is also 2-0 in the last three years as an underdog of 3.5 to 10 points. September has been a kind month to the Ducks with the team going 6-3 in their last three seasons.

Boise State is 3-11 against Pac-10 schools. The Broncos are 61-35 as a favorite since 1992 and 42-18 against the spread at home.

                Weather

The weather for Thursday night’s game is calling for an overnight low of 64 degrees and no chance of rain.

South Carolina at North Carolina State [ESPN | 7:00 PM ET]

South Carolina: South Carolina is looking to win its 10th straight opening game. The Gamecocks, though, are just 4-6 against the spread in their last 10 openers. South Carolina shut out North Carolina State, 34-0, in last year’s season-opener. The Gamecocks’ defense was dominant early, but fell apart at the end of last year surrendering an average of 39.3 points in their last three games. From that unit, the Gamecocks lost their No. 3, 4 and 5 tacklers plus 100 career secondary starts. They also won’t have suspended Clifton Geathers, their best defensive lineman. They do have All-SEC linebacker Eric Norwood. Sophomore quarterback Stephen Garcia remains a work in progress. The Gamecocks need to step up their pass protection. Only Arkansas allowed more sacks than South Carolina in the SEC. The Gamecocks hope to improve a ground attack that ranked No. 112 with Brian Maddox and Jarvis Giles.

South Carolina is 2-6 against the number in its last eight road contests.
The Over is 5-0-1 in the Gamecocks’ past six away games.

Key Injuries - Defensive linemen Clifton Geathers and Ladi Ajiboye are both suspended.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 20

North Carolina State (-5, O/U 46): The Wolfpack are riding a little momentum having won their last four regular-season games to reach a bowl game after opening with two victories in their first eight contests. North Carolina State is 7-0-1 against the spread in its last eight games. Sophomore Russell Wilson became the first freshman to be named a first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference quarterback. He led the ACC with a passing efficiency rating of 133.9. Wilson had a remarkable 17-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio. He has thrown 249 consecutive passes without an interception, just 21 shy of the conference record. North Carolina State hasn’t been good in a favorite’s role, though, going 7-19 against the spread the past 26 times it was chalk. The Wolfpack also will be without their top defensive player probably for the season. Linebacker Nate Irving suffered a broken leg and punctured a lung in a car accident in June.

The Under is 10-2-1 in the Wolfpack’s last 13 games as a favorite.
North Carolina State is 2-7-1 ATS in its last 10 non-conference matchups.

Key Injuries - Linebacker Nate Irving (leg) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 24 (UNDER - Total of the Day)

Oregon at Boise State [ESPN | 10:15 PM ET]

Oregon: The 16th-ranked Ducks open the Chip Kelly era in a huge revenge spot. The Ducks were upset as 10 ½-point home favorites by Boise State last year, 37-32. Now the Ducks want to end Boise State’s 49-game home win streak. Kelly was Oregon’s offensive coordinator last year when the Ducks produced 41.9 points per game average and went 7-4-2 to the over. Quarterback Jeremiah Masoli threw for 1,744 yards and accounted for 13 touchdowns last season after starting the last 10 games. He was knocked out of last year’s Boise game, suffering a concussion. The Ducks had the No. 2 rushing offense in the country last season, averaging 280.1 yards per game. Jeremiah Johnson is gone, but LeGarrette Blount returns after rushing for 1,002 yards and scoring 17 touchdowns. Oregon averaged 54 points in winning its last three games, including beating Oklahoma State in the Holiday Bowl, 42-31.

Oregon has covered 13 of its last 18 games in September.
The Ducks are 11-5 ATS in their past 16 games as a road ‘dog.

Key Injuries - Wide receiver Rory Cavaille (shoulder) is out.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 30

Boise State (-3, O/U 64): Boise State is anxious to keep its home win streak alive and justify its No. 14 ranking, the Broncos’ highest preseason ranking in school history. The Broncos return six starters from last year’s 12-1 squad, including quarterback Kellen Moore. He threw for 3,486 yards and 25 touchdowns last season with just 10 interceptions. Moore burned Oregon for 386 yards and three touchdowns last year as the Broncos built a 37-13 lead in their 37-32 victory. Boise State was third in the nation in scoring defense, holding foes to 12.6 points per game last year. The Broncos return six starters on both offense and defense, including Moore and cornerback Kyle Wilson, the Western Athletic Conference preseason defensive player of the year. Wilson picked off five passes last season, while also returning three punts for touchdowns. The total currently is up to 64 after opening 60 ½.

The Broncos are 42-18 ATS at home since 1992.
The Under has cashed in 11 of the last 15 Boise State non-conference games.

Key Injuries - Defensive lineman Greg Grimes (leg) is doubtful.

PROJECTED SCORE: 34 (Side of the Day)

Game of the Day – Tulsa at Tulane
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tulsa Golden Hurricane at Tulane Green Wave (+13.5, 64)

                      Setting the Scene

Tulsa comes into this Week 1 Conference USA game as a heavy favorite against the Green Wave of Tulane. Tulsa defeated Tulane 56-7 last season thanks in large part to 489 yards rushing on 8.3 yards per carry.

This time around, the Golden Hurricane have more question marks on offense and could be vulnerable in this road game at the Superdome.

Tulsa has to replace its top passer, rusher and receiver from a year ago. That group includes RB Tarrion Adams, who is the school’s career rushing leader at 3,651 yards.

While Tulsa is struggling to replace a bevy of starters, Tulane has experience returning at every skill position.

The Green Wave bring back their quarterback Joe Kemp, who won the starting job last year before suffering season ending injury on a late hit vs. Houston. The Wave also return their top three running backs and three of their four top receivers.

                      Questions at Quarterback

Tulane enters this game in a drastically different situation than last year’s 56-7 blowout loss. While teams are allowed to travel with 70 players, Tulane was down to 53 players in that loss due to an array of injuries. One of the players out in that game was Kemp. He has again been named the starting QB for 2009 after beating out Kevin Moore and redshirt freshmen Ryan Griffin.

Kemp appeared in five games last season and completed 26-of-46 passes for 344 yards and two touchdowns before suffering a broken collarbone.

While Tulane is set at the quarterback position, Tulsa has to replace one of the most productive passers in school history. David Johnson graduated after passing for over 4,000 yards and 46 touchdowns last season.

Tulsa hasn’t announced a starting quarterback for this contest and is likely to use a three-headed monster at the position. Sophomore and former Texas transfer G.J. Kinne is expected to take the majority of the snaps while Junior Jacob Bower and Freshmen Shavodrick Beaver will also get some time.

Bower threw 15 passes last year so he has some experience. Kinne hasn’t taken a snap in 33 months dating back to his high school days. He committed to the Longhorns as one of the most decorated quarterbacks in Texas high school history before making the transfer to Tulsa.

                      Health Issues

Tulane suffered a “wave” of players feeling flu-like symptoms in recent weeks. After nearly 10 days of various players feeling ill and missing practices, Tulane finally got back to full strength Monday.

One concern for the Tulane staff is will that rash of sickness result in lack of preparation for Friday nights game?

“We weren't very physical with our scrimmage this past Saturday,” Tulane head coach Bob Toledo told reporters. “There was a lack of concentration and focus today and the tempo was up and down. I was disappointed and I told them we were sloppy today.”

                      Trends

Tulsa is 4-0 both straight up and ATS vs. Tulsa, winning by an average of 33 PPG and covering by an average of 16 PPG.

Tulsa has been a road favorite of -14 or more just nine times since 1980. It is 9-0 SU in those games but just 4-5 ATS. However, it has failed to cover four of the last five times it has been favored by two or more touchdowns away from home. It was just 2-6 ATS last year when favored on the road.

Tulane has been a poor home dog, going 4-9-1 ATS dating back to 2004. Going all the way back to 1980, the Green Wave are just 31-45-2 vs. the number when getting points at home.

                      Line Movements

This line opened with the Golden Hurricane favored by 14 points and has hovered around that number ever since. As of this writing, the number is mixed at Tulsa -14 and -13.5. The total opened at 63.5 and moved up to 64.5. Now it sits at 64.5 with a few 64’s mixed in.

College football weekend cheat sheet: Week 1
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We’re back this year to give you a few nuggets on every Top 25 matchup each weekend (with some programs playing FCS teams this week, not all games involving ranked programs have odds).

                        Louisiana-Monroe at No. 2 Texas (-41.5, 65)

Louisiana-Monroe beat Alabama a few years ago, but this year’s team is picked to finish just seventh in the Sun Belt, so it’s hard to see the Warhawks keeping it close.

Texas opens against a non-BCS conference team for the 10th year in a row and has won the past nine by an average score of 49.6.

No. 20 Brigham Young at No. 3 Oklahoma (-22, 67.5)

The Cougars return 12 starters, led by QB Max Hall, from last year’s 10-win team. Top RB Harvey Unga should play despite dealing with a hamstring injury.

The Sooners get their first chance at rid the taste of the Florida loss out of their mouths. BYU has lost 12 straight games to ranked non-conference opponents. Sooners star tight end Jermaine Gresham is likely to sit out with a knee injury.

San Jose State at No. 4 USC (-32.5, 48)

The Spartans’ best chance to cover is to try and fluster USC true freshman QB Matt Barkley in his collegiate debut. The Trojans will be without starting center Krisofer O’Dowd and No. 2 WR Ronald Johnson.

The Trojans are is 28-1 all time against WAC opponents and San Jose State has not beaten a ranked opponent since 2000. USC might be looking ahead to Ohio State, however.

No. 5 Alabama vs. No. 7 Virginia Tech (+6.5, 38)

The Hokies’ chances of winning this game, and perhaps the ACC, took a blow when Darren Evans was lost for the year. But that defense gets a shot at unproven Tide QB Greg McElroy.

The Tide got good and bad news this week: Starting running back Julio Jones and RB Mark Ingram were cleared to play by the NCAA. But defensive end Brandon Deaderick is not expected to play after being shot during a robbery.

Navy at No. 6 Ohio State (-21.5, 47)

The Midshipmen are always a nightmare matchup on offense (they again led college football in rushing last year) and have 13 starters back overall.

The Buckeyes simply don’t lose home openers, not having done so since 1978. Plus they had all summer to prepare for Navy’s unique option offense.

Akron at No. 9 Penn State (-27, 59)

Akron struggled on defense and PSU averaged 52.8 points per game in its four non-conference tilts last year.

The Nittany Lions welcome back coach Joe Paterno to the sideline (instead of the coaching box, where he was after hip surgery last year) and star LB Sean Lee after he missed all of last year with an injury.

No. 13 Georgia at No. 9 Oklahoma State (-5, 61.5)

The Bulldogs have to break in a new starting QB and featured running back but have a very experienced offensive line that could dominate. Running back Caleb King didn't make the trip to Stillwater because of a hamstring injury.

The Cowboys lost two starters this week in LB Orie Lemon (torn ACL) and TE Jamal Mosley (quit team). QB Zac Robinson, despite a few reports indicating otherwise, will play this week.

                        No. 11 LSU at Washington (+17.5, 53.5)

The Huskies have lost 14 straight games but have a new identity under coach Steve Sarkisian and get back QB Jake Locker.

LSU running backs Keiland Williams and Charles Scott could have a field day against a Washington defense that allowed 250.6 yards rushing per game last season.

                        Maryland at No. 12 California (-21, 51)

The Terps were a different club against ranked teams last year, going 4-1 as opposed to 4-4 against unranked team. But they bring back just nine starters and are rebuilding both lines.

The Bears might have the best secondary in the country and probably do have the best running back in Jahvid Best. They will remember last year’s 35-27 loss at Maryland. Now it’s the Terps who have to travel cross country.

Nevada at No. 23 Notre Dame (-14.5, 61)

The Wolf Pack are very dangerous behind dual-threat QB Colin Kaepernick, who last year became the fifth player in NCAA history to pass for more than 1,000 yards and run for more than 2,000 yards. They can run on anyone.

Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen should have a field deal against a Nevada pass defense that was the worst in I-A last year. Plus the Wolf Pack are 1-8 against BCS conference teams the past four years.

Florida Atlantic at No. 24 Nebraska (-21.5, 61)

FAU probably has the better QB in Rusty Smith, the Sun Belt’s all-time leading passer. Nebraska QB Zac Lee has attempted two passes.

Nebraska’s running attack, even without the now-departed Quentin Castille (dismissed from team), should roll over an FAU defense that is undersized and with just three starters back.

                        No. 8 Mississippi at Memphis (+17, 54.5)

Arkelon Hall is back at quarterback for Memphis after throwing for 2,275 yards and 12 touchdowns last season, and running back Curtis Steels also returns after rushing for 1,223 yards and seven touchdowns last season. The Tigers will score points.

How will the Rebels handle being the hunted for once? They are ranked in the Top 10 entering the season for the first time since 1970. Ole Miss did beat Memphis by 17 in last year’s opener but has some size problems in the secondary against the big Tiger receivers.

Miami at No. 18 Florida State (-6.5, 47.5)

The Canes won’t have projected starting defensive end Eric Moncour, and the UM D-Line was trashed last season by 310 FSU rushing yards.

FSU is focusing on UM receiver/returner Travis Benjamin, who put up 274 yards of total offense and two touchdowns in last year's game. The Noles are very inexperienced at receiver and that’s the main question mark on offense.

Tulsa at Tulane [ESPN | 8:00 PM ET]

Tulsa (-13.5, O/U 64): Tulsa has had the top offense in the country in each of the past two seasons. The Golden Hurricane averaged 569 yards per game in winning 11 of 14 games last year. Tulsa showed Tulane how good its offense was burying the Green Wave, 56-7, last season easily covering a 28 ½-point spread. The Golden Hurricane have yet to lose to the Green Wave since the teams began facing each other in Conference USA action, going 4-0 straight-up and against the spread with an average winning margin of 33 points. Tulsa won’t have its top passer, rusher, receiver and three offensive linemen from last year. Damarius Johnson is back. He led the Conference USA with 2,475 all-purpose yards, an average of 176.8 per game. Tulsa returns eight starters from its 78th-ranked defense. The Golden Hurricane has covered seven of their last 10 when favored by 10 ½ or more.

Tulsa is 8-3 ATS in its last 11 September games.
The Golden Hurricane have failed to cover in their last 4 road contests.

                          Key Injuries - None

PROJECTED SCORE: 40 (Side of the Day)

Tulane: Losing 20 starters to injuries took a major toll on Tulane last year as the Green Wave won just two of its 12 games. Big things aren’t expected this season either for the Green Wave. The Conference USA media selected Tulane to finish last in the West Division. The Green Wave had trouble putting up points after losing star running back Andre’ Anderson to a season-ending shoulder injury. Anderson, a senior, was headed for a 1,000-yard rushing season, ranking fourth nationally among running backs in rushing and all-purpose yards before sustaining his injury. Tulane averaged just 16.7 points and 221 yards per game. The Green Wave surrendered an average of 34.9 points per game, giving up more than 40 points in six of their last eight games. Tulane was strong in pass defense, ranking 14th in the country allowing an average of 172 yards through the air.

Tulane is 7-23-1 ATS in its last 31 Conference USA games.
The Under has cashed in 6 of Tulane’s last seven games.

Key Injuries - Defensive end Reggie Scott and safety Corey Sonnier are both suspended.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 24

Game of the Day – Alabama at Virginia Tech
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Virginia Tech Hokies (+6.5, 38.5)

                            Neutral Site?

An impressive win in the Georgia Dome to begin last season paved the way for Alabama to become one of the biggest surprises college football.

Nick Saban’s squad came out firing on all cylinders to start 2008, with a 34-10 opening-day win in Atlanta against a Clemson squad that was ranked in the preseason Top 10. Expect the Crimson Tide to hold the edge in crowd support in Atlanta Saturday night this time around, despite the neutral site venue.

                            ACC Mediocrity

The ACC has struggled to step up against the big boys over the last decade. Since the BCS bowl structure was founded a decade ago, ACC teams are just 2-9 SU in BCS Bowls. It’s surely worth noting that Virginia Tech beat Cincinnati in the Orange Bowl last year – the ACC was 1-9 as a conference in BCS Bowl Games prior to that victory.

Factoring pointspreads into the mix, the ACC isn’t getting much respect. This game features the two-time defending ACC champs, returning 15 starters, installed as a near touchdown underdog to an Alabama team that returns only four starters on the offensive side of the football.

                            Injuries and Suspensions

The NCAA reinstated Alabama wide receiver Julio Jones along with running back Mark Ingram on Wednesday on the condition that they repay the cost of a Gulf Coast fishing trip they took last spring. The ruling was very good news for the Crimson Tide. Jones was an All-SEC receiver as a freshman, while Ingram is set to replace All-SEC tailback Glen Coffee after leading the team with 12 touchdown runs as a freshman.

Alabama senior defensive end Brandon Deaderick isn’t expected to play on Saturday. Deaderick was shot in the arm during a robbery attempt over the weekend and was not released from the hospital until late Tuesday.

Virginia Tech’s star running back Darren Evans tore his ACL in preseason practice and is out for the season. Evans was a beast in the backfield last year, gaining more than 1,200 yards while punching in 11 touchdowns. Redshirt freshman RB Ryan Williams is expected to earn the starting nod for Frank Beamer’s squad.

                            Quarterbacks

Virginia Tech junior Tyrod Taylor split time with Sean Glennon last year, but the starting gig is all his in 2009. Taylor’s passing stats weren’t all that pretty in 2008. He posted a 57 percent completion rating, made 173 pass attempts that produced only 1036 yards and had a 2-to-7 touchdown to interception ratio. Taylor’s passing numbers should be better this year and the dual threat’s running numbers should exceed last year’s totals of 5.0 yards per carry and seven rushing touchdowns.

John Parker Wilson graduated in the offseason, leaving the Crimson Tide to search for a new starting quarterback. Junior Greg McElroy won the job in a three-way competition during spring practice, after patiently waiting three full years for his chance.

McElroy knows a thing about patience. In high school he sat behind future Missouri star Chase Daniel until his senior year before leading his team to the state title. McElroy’s college experience is limited to mop-up duty in blowouts, throwing 20 passes in eight previous games.

“He is very smart. Players really like him. He has a lot of positive leadership qualities,” coach Nick Saban told reporters.

                            Coaches Quotes

Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer isn’t resting his hopes for the season on this one ballgame. Remember, the Hokies lost their opener to East Carolina last year, but still managed to win the ACC title.

“A win over a great program as good as Alabama would definitely be a big thing for Virginia Tech and the ACC,” Beamer told the media. “The other side of it, it doesn’t make your season either way. If you beat Alabama you still have games to play, and if you lose to Alabama you still have games to play.”

Nick Saban still seems upset by Alabama’s failures in the SEC title game against Florida and their Sugar Bowl game against Utah, particularly on the defensive side of the football.

While the buzz around Tuscaloosa is calling this year’s defense one of the best Alabama defenses ever, Saban cut that talk short.

“Where it is now, we gave up 31 points in the last two games we played. Even though we were going against two of the best offenses in the country, we need to do better. There’s a lot of room for improvement,” Saban told the press.

Nevada at Notre Dame [NBC | 3:30 PM ET]

Nevada: The Wolf Pack hopes to stay in this game with their potent offense, which averaged 37 points and 500 yards in 2008. Quarterback Colin Kaepernick became the first player in NCAA history to throw for 2,500 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in a season. Kaepernick has two good running backs he can rely on, too, Vai Taua and Luke Lippincott. The Wolf Pack also could have the best offensive line in the Western Athletic Conference. Defensive ends Dontay Moch and Kevin Basped combined for 21 ½ sacks. The secondary is where the Wolf Pack is vulnerable ranking last against the pass in 2008. Nevada has incentive going against Notre Dame with nothing to lose. The Wolf Pack have a bye the following week where the Irish could get caught looking ahead with a road game next Saturday at long-time rival Michigan followed by a home game versus Michigan State.

The Wolf Pack is 3-8 ATS in their last 11 road contests.
Nevada is 5-11 ATS as a road ‘dog when taking more than 10 points.

                              Key Injuries - None

PROJECTED SCORE: 24 (Side of the Day)

Notre Dame (-14.5, O/U 62): Notre Dame is getting a lot of love coming into the season with its first preseason ranking in three years and Lou Holtz proclaiming the Irish could play in the national title game. The fact is the Irish, while having a strong offense, are 10-15 the past two years under Charlie Weis. It’s the most losses the Irish have endured during a two-year period. They have lost 14 of the last 16 times they’ve met a team that went to a bowl game the previous season. Nevada has been to bowl games in each of the previous four seasons. Quarterback Jimmy Clausen lived up to his hype last year throwing for 3,172 yards and 25 touchdowns. Most of Clausen’s weapons are back, too, including leading rusher Armando Allen and top receivers Golden Tate and Michael Floyd. The Irish, though, are breaking in a rebuilt defensive front seven.

The Irish have failed to cover in 13 of their last 19 home contests.
Notre Dame is 2-9 ATS when laying more than 10 ½ points.

Key Injuries - Wide receiver Duval Kamara (knee) is questionable.

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 37

Missouri at Illinois [ESPN | 3:30 PM ET]

Missouri: This is the third time in a row these two teams have opened up against each other and Missouri has won the previous two times by six and 10 points. Sophomore Blaine Gabbert is replacing the departed Chase Daniel at quarterback. The Tigers also lost star wide receiver Jeremy Maclin and tight end Chase Coffman from last year’s 10-4 squad that averaged a healthy 42.2 points per game and put up 52 on Illinois. Despite losing these key players, insiders are saying this is the fastest team Gary Pinkel’s had in his nine years. The Tigers have covered in eight of their last 10 games versus a non-conference opponent. Only Oklahoma and USC have won more games than Missouri during the past two years. A key is if there will be defensive improvement under new coordinator Dave Steckel with just four starters returning, including only one in the secondary.

The Over is 26-10 the past 36 times Missouri has been an underdog.

                              Key Injuries - None.

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 28

Illinois (-6.5, O/U 60.5): Illinois is playing with double-revenge. The Illini are out to rebound from a disappointing 5-7 season. Senior quarterback Juice Williams can make plays and he has one of the Big Ten Conference’s best wide receivers to throw to in Arrelious Benn. Williams passed for 451 yards against Missouri last year. Despite losing cornerback Vontae Davis to the NFL, the Illini maintain a strong secondary. The Illini also will have defensive lineman Josh Brent. He was suspended earlier for an off-season DUI. But that suspension was lifted this week. Early betting has favored Illinois with the line climbing from an opening number of minus 3. Illinois, though, is 0-7 against the number when favored between 3 ½ and 10 points. The Illini are 7-12 against the spread when laying points during the past three years. They are 0-5 against the spread in their last five non-conference matchups.

Illinois is 13-6 to the over in its last 19 September games.

Key Injuries - Running back Daniel Dufrene (ankle) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 33 (OVER - Total of the Day)
