          Weekend six-pack
Taking a look at teams in the ACC's Coastal Division

-- Virginia Tech-- Hokies play Bama, Nebraska, Miami in September; they've got nine starters back on offense, seven on defense-- offensive line has 90 starts back. Hokies covered 7 of last 10 as an underdog.

-- Miami-- Most experienced OL they've had in while, but QB Harris has only two starts. 8 starters back on offense, 7 on defense, but their schedule is nasty, opening with FSU-Ga Tech-Va Tech-Oklahoma.

-- Georgia Tech-- 18 starters back for team that ran ball for 273 yards a game LY, Johnson's first at Tech. Four starters are back on OL, so this team should be ever better this season. 12-3 as road dog since '04.

-- North Carolina-- Five of top six WRs graduated, but they've got nine starters back on defense, three more on OL. Are just 8-17 as favorite at home this decade. UNC 0-2 vs State since O'Brien got to Raleigh.

-- Virginia-- Only 11 starters back for team whose last three bowl tilts were all decided by three points, with an average total of 65. A senior QB with 22 starts and four starters back on OL are a positive sign.

-- Duke-- 15 players came down with swine flu this week for program whose last bowl was in 1990, last bowl win in '60. Senior QB with 33 starts, but three new starters on OL. 4-15 as home dog since 2005.

Saturday's List of 13: Sorting out stuff on a steamy Saturday

          13) Quentin Richardson has been traded four times since NBA season ended in June-- that has to be some kind of a record.

          12) Actor Jeremy Piven threw out first ball at Wrigley Field Friday; no truth to rumor that the visiting Pirates offered him a contract to throw a couple innings for them after they fell behind 14-0 in second inning.

          11) I'll rub it in and remind people that Charlie Morton was starter for the Pirates Friday, the same guy they traded Nate McLouth for. Ouch.

          10) If I coached an NFL team, I'd go for it on fourth down a lot in these meaningless exhibition games-- you can create situations to judge your players on, and thats really what the games are for, talent evaluation.

          9) Magic Johnson turned 50 years old this week. I felt older when that flashed on the TV screen, since I'm turning 50 in a few months, too.

          8) I've got this feeling no team actually wanted Michael Vick, but Eagles did the NFL a favor and signed him up, with their payoff being that if he can show any semblance of his former playing skill, they can trade him in the offseason and in essence, get a free draft pick or two next year.

          7) Kyle Orton was horrible in his Denver debut Friday night, throwing three INTs in the first half. Chris Simms looked like the better player in the second half, but he was also playing against second-teamers.

          6) Since 2000, 45 major leaguers have hit for the cycle, only 14 no-hitters have been thrown. Before 2000, there had been more no-hitters thrown than cycles hit for. No idea why the change.

          5) Terry Francona pinch-ran pitcher Buchholz for Varitek as tying run on second with one out in top of 8th Friday night, with Boston trailing 4-3. Next batter hit a ball off the leftfield fence, but Buchholz not only got thrown out at the plate, he slid headfirst, making his very valuable right hand vulnerable to injury. Victor Martinez doubled to five Red Sox the lead, bailing both manager and pinch runner out of a bad situation.

          4) Short game guru Dave Pelz says pitch shots from around the green are 30% more likely to go in if you leave the flagstick in. He should know.

          3) It should be illegal to wear a coat and tie at a golf course.

          2) Minnesota is called the Land of 10,000 Lakes, but actually has more than 12,000 lakes, all of which are frozen for a good part of the year, yet Minnesota claims more golfers per capita than any other state.

          1) Its funny that golf tournaments get a better rating if Eldrick Woods is winning-- he makes golf boring, declares outcomes somewhat inevitable whenever he grabs the lead, yet more people watch on TV. Go figure.
