    Daily Sports Roundup

    Saturday, August 15

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Red Sox take on the Rangers, the NFL stages more preseason games, and the PGA Championship heads into Round 3.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The National Football League has six preseason contests on the slate for Saturday, with Atlanta at Detroit (-3), Chicago at Buffalo (-3), Houston at Kansas City (-2), Cleveland at Green Bay (-2.5), Seattle at San Diego (-3), and Tampa Bay at Tennessee (-4). The Titans are coming off a 21-18 win over the Bills in the preseason-opening Hall of Fame Game last weekend. Vince Young, though, struggled on the night, going just 5-of-10 for 39 yards passing (with a single TD).

As well, the Canadian Football League offers up Montreal at Winnipeg on Saturday night. The Alouettes, who are 5-1 straight-up and 4-2 against-the-spread, are pegged as 8-point road favorites, with the total for the game at 48 points. The Blue Bombers sit at 2-4 SU and 4-2 ATS through their first six games.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The Giants' Matt Cain (12-4, 2.44 ERA) will take on the Mets' Johan Santana (13-8, 3.00 ERA) on Saturday afternoon in the marquee pitching matchup of the day. Righthander Cain will be looking to get back into the win column in that outing, as he's given up nine earned runs over 15 innings in back-to-back losses to the Reds and Astros. Lefthander Santana is coming off a dominating win over the Padres, allowing just one earned run on five hits over eight innings of work.

Also on the National League schedule for Saturday: Pittsburgh at the Cubs, Colorado at Florida, Houston at Milwaukee, Washington at Cincinnati, San Diego at St. Louis, the Dodgers at Arizona, and Philadelphia at Atlanta. Cole Hamels (7-7, 4.77 ERA) will get the ball for the Phillies, while the Braves will counter with Kenshin Kawakami (5-9, 4.12 ERA). Righthander Kawakami tossed seven shutout innings against the Dodgers in his last trip to the hill, giving up four hits.

The American League matchups on Saturday are the White Sox at Oakland, Cleveland at Minnesota, the Angels at Baltimore, Kansas City at Detroit, Toronto at Tampa Bay, the Yankees at Seattle, and Boston at Texas. The Red Sox will go with Brad Penny (7-6, 5.16 ERA) in that contest, while the Rangers will send Derek Holland (5-7, 5.04 ERA) to the mound. Lefthander Holland completely shut down the Angels last time out, throwing nine shutout innings and fanning eight.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The WNBA has five games on its Saturday schedule, with Seattle at Atlanta, Phoenix at San Antonio, Minnesota at Chicago, Los Angeles at Sacramento, and Detroit at Indiana. The Fever improved their record to 18-5 SU (and 15-8 ATS) last time out by knocking off Minnesota 91-81, while the Shock fell 80-75 to Atlanta in their most recent contest. Those two teams last met back on June 19 and June 21, with the Fever pulling out the victory in each of those two matchups.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, the third round of the PGA Championship gets underway on Saturday morning, with Tiger Woods holding a big four-shot lead. Woods shot a 2-under 70 in the second round on Friday to move to 7-under for the tournament. Vijay Singh, Brendan Jones, Lucas Glover, Ross Fisher, and Padraig Harrington are all tied for second at 3-under. Phil Mickelson is at 4-over heading into Saturday.

MONTREAL ALOUETTES AT WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS (+8, 48)

Winnipeg will try to run the ball and with backs like Fred Reid and Yvenson Bernard, they should. The problem is that it is exactly what the Alouettes will be expecting and have prepared for during practice. Will Michael Bishop be able to create chaos in Montreal’s secondary by throwing deep and take advantage of tall WR Adarius Bowman against two cornerbacks that are only 5-foot-9? That might be the key. But Bishop will need his offensive line to contain the Alouettes front seven if he is going to take advantage of that apparent mismatch. The defensive unit will also need to step up to slow down Anthony Calvillo and his impressive arsenal of receivers. The Bombers have the second-worst offensive record in the CFL and are facing the second most potent attack.

      Pick: Montreal -8

      Sunday, August 16

HAMILTON TIGER CATS AT SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS (-5, 52.5)

It’s an interesting showdown in Regina between these surprising squads who lead the CFL in points against after six games. Not exactly what they are used to in Saskatchewan. DeAndra Cobb is a solid running back and he should inflict some damage to the Riders but I doubt that it will be enough. Hamilton this season has played with discipline avoiding giving costly turnovers or taking bad penalties. The Roughriders should make note of that, especially after last week when QB Darian Durant threw two interceptions in a 35-20 loss to B.C. Home advantage should be a big factor in this one.

      Pick: Saskatchewan -5

      Last week: 2-2
      Season: 11-13

        SCOREBOARD

        Saturday, Aug. 15

Boston at Texas (8:05 p.m. EDT). Two top contenders for the AL wild card meet in Arlington, when the Red Sox send Jon Lester (9-7, 3.67 ERA) to the hill against the Rangers and Kevin Millwood (9-7, 3.38).

        STARS

        Friday

-Felix Pie, Orioles, became the fourth player in Orioles history to hit for the cycle, and Baltimore tied club records for extra-base hits and doubles in a 16-6 rout of the Angels.

-Derrek Lee, Cubs, matched a career high with seven RBIs as Chicago snapped its five-game losing streak with a 17-2 rout of the Pirates.

-Brandon Inge, Tigers, hit a home run with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Detroit a 1-0 victory over the Royals.

-Ryan Howard, Phillies, led off the ninth inning with a homer and Philadelphia won its fourth straight game, beating the Braves 3-2.

-Scott Baker and Jason Kubel, Twins. Baker pitched a two-hitter and Kubel homered and had five RBIs as Minnesota beat the Indians 11-0.

-Alexei Ramirez, White Sox, led off the 10th inning with a home run and Chicago overcame blowing a six-run lead with an 8-7 victory over Oakland.

-Ryan Braun, Brewers, homered in each of the first two innings, lifting Milwaukee to an 11-2 victory over the Astros.

-Josh Johnson, Marlins, allowed one hit and had a career-high 11 strikeouts in 7 1-3 innings, and Florida tightened the NL wild-card race by beating the Rockies 6-5.

-Victor Martinez, Red Sox, hit a two-out, two-run double to key a six-run ninth inning that lifted Boston to an 8-4 victory over the Rangers.

-Adam Wainwright, Cardinals, joined Boston's Josh Beckett as the only 14-game winners in the majors and contributed his fifth career homer to a 15-hit attack in St. Louis' 9-2 victory over the Padres.

        CYCLING

Felix Pie became the fourth player in Orioles history to hit for the cycle - in a 16-6 win over the Angels. It was the seventh cycle in the majors this season and the second this week. Troy Tulowitzki of Colorado did it Monday night against the Chicago Cubs. Pie joins Brooks Robinson (1960), Cal Ripken Jr. (1984) and Aubrey Huff (2007) as the only Orioles to hit for the cycle.

        A-BACK ACHE

Alex Rodriguez was scratched from the Yankees' lineup because of a new ailment: back spasms. Manager Joe Girardi had Rodriguez in the lineup for the second game of New York's series against the Mariners, after he missed Thursday's victory resting a bruised elbow. Soon after Rodriguez entered the clubhouse about 2 1/2 hours before the first pitch, he declared he was still sore, and in his back, too, and was replaced.

        RECORD RUN

The Cubs led 14-0 after two innings and went on to win 17-2 over Pittsburgh. The last time they scored so many runs so quickly was June 7, 1906 - 10 years before they moved into Wrigley Field.

        DON'T STOP AT FIRST

Baltimore finished its 16-6 win over the Angels with 12 extra-base hits, tying the mark set last year against Detroit. The Orioles' nine doubles matched the club record set on July 30, 1996, against Minnesota.

        FIRST CONTRACT

The Arizona Diamondbacks have signed first-round draft pick Bobby Borchering to a minor league contract that includes a $1.8 million signing bonus. The third baseman from Fort Myers, Fla., was the 16th pick overall. Borchering was only the 13th of 32 first-round picks to sign so far with a Monday deadline for reaching a deal.

        THE MARLINS GO TO 11

The Marlins had 10 hits in a 6-5 win over Colorado, extending their streak of consecutive games with at least 10 to a club-record 11 games. The last team with a streak that long was Boston in May 2008.

        DEAL 'EM

The Reds traded SS Alex Gonzalez and cash to Boston for minor league SS Kris Negron. The Red Sox made the trade a week after putting shortstop Jed Lowrie on the 15-day disabled list with an irritated left forearm. Last month, they traded shortstop Julio Lugo to St. Louis.

        THAT'S THE WAY, ROY

Roy Halladay gave up two runs over eight innings for his 13th win, 5-2 over Tampa Bay, but just his first in four tries against the Rays this season. Halladay was 0-2 in three starts against Tampa Bay coming in.

        SPEAKING

"It was my best game, because my defense - every stinking one of them - was with me. Then the bullpen - every dude - came in and did an unbelievable job.'' - Washington's Garrett Mock after beating Cincinnati 2-0. Mock allowed six hits over seven innings for his second win.

        SEASONS

        Aug. 15

1905 - Rube Waddell of the Philadelphia Athletics pitched a five-inning no-hit game to beat the St. Louis Browns 2-0.

1914 - Brooklyn's Jake Daubert set a NL record with four sacrifice hits in the second game of a doubleheader against Philadelphia.

1916 - In a classic pitching duel, Babe Ruth of the Boston Red Sox beat Walter Johnson of the Washington Senators, 1-0, in 13 innings at Fenway Park.

1945 - The Chicago Cubs routed the Brooklyn Dodgers 20-6, at Ebbets Field. Paul Gillespie knocked in six runs with two home runs and a single to lead the attack.

1955 - Warren Spahn of the Milwaukee Braves hit a home run off Mel Wright of the St. Louis Cardinals to give Spahn a homer in every NL park.

1975 - Baltimore manager Earl Weaver was ejected twice by umpire Ron Luciano. Weaver was thrown out in the first game and was ejected before the second game.

1989 - Dave Dravecky of the San Francisco Giants, in his second start after coming back from cancer surgery on his pitching arm, broke his arm but earned the win in a 3-2 victory over the Montreal Expos. Dravecky entered the sixth inning with a three-hit shutout. He gave up a leadoff home run to Damaso Garcia and hit Andres Galarraga with a pitch. After throwing a wild pitch to Tim Raines, he collapsed to the ground and clutched his left arm in agony.

1990 - Philadelphia's Terry Mulholland pitched the record eighth no-hitter of the season as the Phillies beat the San Francisco Giants 6-0. The season's eighth no-hitter surpassed the modern record of seven set in 1908 and 1917.

1990 - Mark McGwire hit a grand slam in the 10th inning to become the first major league player to hit 30 or more homers in his first four seasons and lifted the Oakland Athletics to a 6-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox.

2001 - Trevor Hoffman pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 300th career save, completing a two-hitter that lifted the San Diego Padres over the New York Mets 2-1.

2005 - Randy Winn hit for the cycle in his first four at-bats in San Francisco's 7-3 win over Cincinnati.

2006 - Jose Reyes homered three times in the New York Mets' 11-4 loss to Philadelphia.

        Today's birthday: Oliver Perez 28

          This Day in Baseball
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On August 15 in Baseball History...

1886 - Louisville's Guy Hecker scores seven runs in a game, establishing a major league record.

1889 - The Cleveland Spiders win 19-8 over the Boston Beaneaters, and become the first team in National League history to score in all nine innings of a single game.

1905 - Rube Waddell of the Philadelphia Athletics pitched a five-inning no-hit game to beat the St. Louis Browns, 2-0.

1914 - Brooklyn's Jake Daubert set a National League record with four sacrifices in one game.

1916 - In a classic pitching duel, Babe Ruth of the Boston Red Sox beat Walter Johnson of the Washington Senators, 1-0, in 13 innings at Fenway Park.

1925 - Dickie Kerr, the southpaw who won two games for the White Sox in the 1919 World Series, makes his first major league appearance since 1921. He has been playing semipro ball rather than accept Charles Comiskey's salary offer. When he relieves Red Faber in the third inning against the Tigers, play is stopped while admirers present him with a floral horseshoe.

1926 - Because of a running mix-up at third base with Chick Fewster, Dodger Babe Herman performs the unlikely feat of doubling into a double play against the Braves at Ebbets Field.

1939 - The White Sox beat the Browns 5-2 in the first night game at Comiskey Park. Johnny Rigney is the winner.

1945 - Commissioner Happy Chandler sells World Series radio rights for $150,000 to Gillette. Ford had been the World Series sponsor since 1934, paying $100,000 annually.

1945 - The Chicago Cubs routed the Brooklyn Dodgers, 20-6, at Ebbets Field. Paul Gillespie knocked in six runs with two home runs and a single to lead the attack.

1955 - Pitcher Warren Spahn of the Milwaukee Braves hit a home run off Mel Wright of the St. Louis Cardinals to give Spahn a home run in every National League park.

1964 - Mayor Daley declares "Ernie Banks Day" in Chicago and 26,000 fans cheer the Cubs' slugger. Banks then goes hitless as Pittsburgh wins 5-4.

1965 - The Japanese community of San Francisco holds Masanori Murakami Day at Candlestick Park to honor the first Japanese player to have reached the American major leagues. Ordinarily a reliever, Murakami makes his first major league start as the Giants outslug the Phillies 15-9.

1975 - Baltimore manager Earl Weaver was ejected twice by umpire Ron Luciano. Weaver was thrown out in the first game and was again before the second game of a doubleheader.

1983 - Braves slugger Bob Horner, who was hitting .303 with 20 home runs and 68 RBI, breaks his right wrist sliding into second base during a 4-0 loss to the Padres and will be sidelined for the rest of the season. In Atlanta, the injury is widely attributed to the "Chief Noc-A-Homa Jinx," which seems to strike whenever the Braves remove their mascot's outfield teepee in order to sell more tickets.

1987 - At the Pan American games in Indianapolis, the U.S.A. and Cuba are tied with two outs in the ninth when Ty Griffin hits a two-run home run to win it. For Cuba it is their first loss in twenty years of Pan Am competition.

1989 - In his second start since returning to the major leagues after cancer treatment, Giants southpaw Dave Dravecky breaks his pitching arm while throwing to Tim Raines in the sixth inning of a 3-2 San Francisco win. Dravecky will not pitch again in the major leagues.

1990 - Mark McGwire hits a game-winning grand slam in the bottom of the tenth inning to give Oakland a 6-2 win over Boston. He becomes the first player to hit 30 home runs in each of his first four seasons.

1990 - Philadelphia's Terry Mulholland pitched the record eighth no-hitter of the season as the Phillies beat the San Francisco Giants, 6-0. The season's eighth no-hitter surpassed the modern record of seven set in 1908 and 1917.

If you’re looking for a good spot to back Johan Santana and the Mets, it doesn’t get much better than Saturday’s tilt against the light-hitting San Francisco Giants.

Santana (13-8, 3.00 ERA) sometimes suffers from lack of run support, but he won’t need much to get by a Giants team that ranks No. 28 in Major League Baseball at 3.99 runs per game.

The Mets are also in a favorable spot against San Francisco’s Matt Cain (12-4), who has lost his past two starts and shown some trouble with his control.

If the Mets can find a way to get a couple of runs on the board early, they should be in great shape for bettors and this is about as good of a price you could hope for.

The Mets are 5-0 in Santana’s last five starts against the National League West, and 5-1 in his past six Saturday starts.

              Pick: Mets

Washington Nationals at Cincinnati Reds (-180)

The struggling Cincinnati Reds and their woeful pitching staff might just the cure for the road-weary Nationals, who had won seven straight before starting another recent losing skid.
The heart of Washington’s lineup including Ryan Zimmerman and Adam Dunn blasted away against mediocre pitching during their winning run. They’ll have a chance to do the same against the Reds’ Johnny Cueto, who is 1-4 in his last five starts against teams with losing records.

Conversely, the Nationals have posted a 5-1 mark against teams with losing records and face a Reds club that has given their home fans just two wins in their past 10 outings.

              Pick: Nationals

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Streaking

                Johan Santana, New York Mets

When he’s on his game, Santana is still one of the most formidable hurlers in the game. Lately, the Mets have seen the best of him.

Santana (13-8, 3.00 ERA) is 4-1 with one no-decision in his past six starts, with two shaky outings sandwiched in between four trademark, shutdown performances.
He has given up one or fewer earned runs in the four wins and lasted at least seven innings in those victories.

                Doug Davis, Arizona Diamondbacks

Davis (7-10, 3.49 ERA) has been prone to the occasional crooked number, which has hurt his overall record. But lately he has found his groove and become a model of consistency for the Diamondbacks.

The 33-year-old lefty is 3-0 with one no-decision in his past four starts. He has given two earned runs in each of his past three starts, which includes wins over the New York Mets and Pittsburgh Pirates.

                Slumping

                Johnny Cueto, Cincinnati Reds

Cueto has come to exemplify the struggles of the Reds’ starting pitching, as he is 0-5 with two no-decisions in past seven starts.

The 23-year-old Cueto (8-9, 4.23 ERA) has been inconsistent, giving up at least four earned runs in three straight starts. He also has failed to make it past the sixth inning in each of his past six outings.

                Matt Cain, San Francisco Giants

Cain might still be a candidate for the NL Cy Young Award, but the 24-year-old righty has had some recent struggles.

Cain (12-4, 2.44 ERA) is 0-2 with a no-decision in his past three starts. His losses include ugly outings against the Houston Astros and Cincinnati Reds in which he gave up nine earned runs in two starts.

He struggled with location in these losses and was tagged for a total of four home runs in the two-start span.

Seattle Storm at Atlanta Dream (-3, 154)

The Dream’s offense appears to be heating up, just as the slumping Storm’s offense has been stuck in slow-down mode.

The Dream (12-11), who have won and covered in three of their past four home games, have been filling up the basket at a frenetic pace that has seen their offense soar to second in the league at 82.9 points per game.

The Storm (13-10), on the other hand, have struggled to get much production out of anyone aside from stars Sue Bird and Lauren Jackson. They have lost four of six overall, and clipped 75 points just twice in that span.

Seattle has failed to give bettors the cash in five straight games and this doesn’t look like a good spot to fade the trend.

                              Pick: Atlanta -3

Detroit Shock at Indiana Fever (-7, 149)

The defending champion Shock have struggled all season to recapture their winning ways. Beset by injuries and a coaching change, Detroit has improved since the All-Star break, but time is running out.

Saturday’s visit to Indiana could be a do-or-die game for Detroit. The Shock are sure to have motivation on their side in this one, even though the Fever (18-5) can safely conclude that it has the better team.

The Shock (9-12) have split their last two road games, with the losses coming by a total of nine points. The Fever return from winning two of a three-game road swing.

Detroit has improved its rebounding and offensive balance and it’s fair to believe it will not let this one get away without a fight.

                              Pick: Detroit +7
