        Weekend six-pack

Six franchises that declared bankruptcy in the last year........

-- Mrs Fields, Salt Lake City-- This also includes TCBY yogurt; did you know . Debbie Fields was a ballgirl at the Oakland Coliseum back in the day?
-- Cork & Olive, Tampa-- Retail wine franchise.

-- Bennigan's-- Restaurant chain fild Chapter 7 last July.

-- Dial-a-Mattress, Long Island City-- Sleepy's won company back in May, for a reported $25M at auction.

-- Bally Total Fitness, Chicago-- Filed Chapter 11 in December, for the second time in last 14 months.

-- Fatburger, Santa Monica-- Owed $3.9M in defaulted loans. Thats a lot of burgers they'd have to sell. Fatburgers sound good, though.

        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday's List of 13: Rattlin' on about a variety of things......

        13) Fridays are often slow news days, because not as many people buy newspapers on Saturdays, but that doesn't hold for sports. A's traded Matt Holliday to St Louis for three prospects- from the A's viewpoint, it is an easily measured trade, but for the Cardinals, only time will tell.

        12) The only way the trade works for St Louis is if they sign Holliday long-term; given that he has scumweasel Scott Boras as his agent, thats no guarantee. Giving up 3B prospect Wallace is as disaster if Holliday is somewhere other than St Louis in 2010.

        11) Holliday now bats behind Albert Pujols, who has been intentionally walked 34 times this season. As Inspector Clousseau was fond of saying in the Pink Panther movies, "......not anymore."

        10) From the Oakland standpoint, you ask two questions-- are the guys they got worth more than the two draft picks they would have gotten if they kept Holliday all season, then lost him as a free agent? Wallace is a huge prospect, and the A's desperately need a 3B, so they're better off that way. They also got more from St Louis than they gave up last fall when they traded for Holliday, so the trade works for them there, too.

        9) Downside for A's is that they sucked this season even with Holliday, so the rest of this season could be very ugly. Holliday was hitting .316 since May 11, so he had been carrying his weight. He'll be missed. He went 4 for 5 with a double and an RBI in his Cardinal debut.

        8) Mike Hampton, hated by Met fans already for signing with Colorado instead of the Mets after New York had been in the '00 World Series, hit his 16th career homer in the 4th inning Friday, as Houston won 5-4.

        7) The Mets have five home runs in July; Garrett Jones of the Pirates has five home runs in his last eight games.

        6) Friday night was the Astros' first sellout since Opening Day.

        5) Opposing hitters are batting .083 against Matt Cain this year when he gets an 0-2 count on them, something like 15 for 173.

        4) Turns out it was a South Carolina assistant coach who filled out Steve Spurrier's all-SEC ballot and stupidly left Tim Tebow off the first team (he had Jevan Snead of Ole Miss). Spurrier apologized and now the whole incident will go away, good lord willing.

        3) I figured out the other day that I've been in 23 of the 50 states.

        2) Andre Miller signed with Portland Friday, another kick in the teeth to the Knicks, who can't anybody good to come play for them.

        1) Happy 56th birthday to one of my boyhood heroes, Biff Pocoroba.
