    Daily Sports Roundup

    Saturday, July 25

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The White Sox and Tigers continue their set in Detroit, the Cubs take on the Reds, and the WNBA stages its All-Star contest.

Colliding in the Junior Circuit . . .

The Orioles will continue their road series against the Red Sox on Saturday night, with Baltimore's Jeremy Guthrie (7-8, 5.12 ERA) taking on Boston's Jon Lester (8-7, 3.87 ERA). Righthander Guthrie is coming off a strong outing against the White Sox in which he surrendered just two earned runs on three hits over eight innings of work. Lefthander Lester took a hard-luck loss in his last trip to the mound, allowing just three earned runs on five hits over his seven innings pitched.

Also on the American League schedule for Saturday: Oakland at the Yankees, Tampa Bay at Toronto, Cleveland at Seattle, Minnesota at the Angels, Texas at Kansas City, and the White Sox at Detroit. Gavin Floyd (8-6, 4.40 ERA) gets the start for Chicago; the righthander has given up 13 earned runs over his last three starts (20 innings), but still went 2-1 in those outings. The Tigers will counter with Edwin Jackson (7-5, 2.52 ERA); Detroit is 5-5 in the righthander's last 10 outings.

Clashing in the Senior Circuit . . .

Saturday's NL slate kicks off with the Cubs hosting the Reds, as Johnny Cueto (8-6, 3.67 ERA) takes on Kevin Hart (1-1, 2.30 ERA). Righthander Cueto had to settle for a no-decision vs. the Brewers last time out, surrendering three earned runs on 10 hits over six innings of work; Cueto last won on July 1. Righthander Hart will be filling in for the injured Ted Lilly on Saturday. Hart beat the Nationals in his last outing, holding them to only two earned runs over five innings of work.

Also on the National League schedule for Saturday: St. Louis at Philadelphia, San Diego at Washington, the Mets at Houston, San Francisco at Colorado, Pittsburgh at Arizona, Florida at the Dodgers, and Atlanta at Milwaukee. Braves righthander Tommy Hanson (5-0, 3.00 ERA) will try to keep his perfect record intact in that contest; Hanson beat the Giants last time out. The Brewers will counter with righthander Yovani Gallardo (8-7, 3.28 ERA), who last won June 26.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The Canadian Football League closes out its fourth week on Saturday afternoon with a game between the Eskimos and Roughriders in Saskatchewan. Edmonton has yet to pay off for bettors so far this year, going 0-3 against-the-spread (and 1-2 straight-up). Saskatchewan is 2-1 both SU and ATS through their first three games of the season. The oddsmakers have the Roughriders pegged as 4.5-point home favorites for Saturday's matchup, with the day's total set at 55 points.

Finally, the best of the WNBA will take the court on Saturday afternoon in the league's annual All-Star Game, which will be held at Connecticut's Mohegan Sun Arena. The Eastern All-Stars were listed as early 5-point favorites over the West.

EDMONTON ESKIMOS (1-2) at SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS (2-1)

After a great start, the Saskatchewan Roughriders were crushed by the Alouettes last week. The defence did, however, stand strong for the first 30 minutes, managing to limit Anthony Calvillo’s bunch to only 14 points. The offensive line of the Eskimos won’t be able to match wits, nor manage to outmuscle the stout front seven of the Riders and quarterback Ricky Ray should have a miserable day. But Darian Durant will need to see much better performances from his receivers if Saskatchewan is to win this one.

        Pick: Saskatchewan

        (Last Week 2-2, season 5-7)

-Aramis Ramirez, Cubs, homered to snap a sixth-inning tie and had a pair of two-out, run-producing hits in his most productive game since coming off the disabled list, leading Chicago to an 8-5 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

-Aaron Laffey, Indians, had a career-high seven strikeouts in seven innings in Cleveland's 9-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners.

          STREAKS & STATS

The New York Yankees' eight-game win streak against the Oakland A's is their longest since July 16, 1993-April 30, 1994. ... Boston beat Baltimore 3-1 and improved to 32-14 at Fenway, the best home record in the majors. The Red Sox have beaten the Orioles 10 straight times at Fenway, where they have sold out 515 games in a row. ... The Kansas City Royals have lost 10 straight overall, their longest skid since dropping 12 in a row in May 2008, and have a seven-game home losing streak for the first time in two years. ... The New York Mets finished with 13 hits in a 5-4 loss at Houston, but stranded 10 runners and scored fewer than five runs for the 15th time in 20 games.

          MILESTONES

Derek Jeter drove in two runs and had three hits in the New York Yankees' 8-3 victory over Oakland on Friday night, passing Ted Williams on the career hits list with 2,655. Jeter is 68th on the list and needs five to tie Harry Heilmann and George Davis. ... Mat Latos (1-1) pitched into the sixth inning to notch his first career victory, helping the San Diego Padres snap a five-game skid with a 6-2 win over the Washington Nationals.

          MAUER POWER

Minnesota's Joe Mauer, vying for his third league batting title in four seasons, was 2 for 4 with two homers in the Twins' 6-3 loss at Los Angeles on Friday night. He has nine hits in 20 career at-bats against John Lackey, but had never homered against him before Friday.

          BASHING BRAVES

Chipper Jones hit a go-ahead homer in the sixth and Martin Prado and Nate McLouth also homered to pace a season-best 17-hit effort by Atlanta in a 9-4 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday night.

          BACK IN BUSINESS

Carlos Guillen, just activated from the disabled list after spending most of the season on the DL with a sore shoulder, homered to help Detroit sweep Chicago on Friday night and increase its AL Central lead to two games over the White Sox.

          POWER OUTAGE

The San Francisco Giants entered their game at Colorado on Friday night as the only team without a homer following the All-Star break. Nate Schierholtz ended that dubious distinction in the fourth inning of a 3-1 victory, connecting on a 93-mph fastball from Jason Hammel.

          DOC ROCKS

With trade rumors swirling, Toronto's Roy Halladay allowed two runs, one earned, and four hits in nine innings, but took a no-decision as the Blue Jays lost to Tampa Bay in 10 innings. He walked three and struck out 10, the eighth 10-strikeout game of his career.

          HOLLIDAY SHOPPING

The St. Louis Cardinals acquired three-time All-Star outfielder Matt Holliday and cash from the Oakland Athletics on Friday for three prospects, including power-hitting third baseman Brett Wallace, a top offensive player in the St. Louis farm system, outfielder Shane Peterson and right-hander Clayton Mortensen.

          POWERFUL PITCHERS

Cincinnati pitcher Aaron Harang, a career .090 hitter who has struck out 178 times in 390 at-bats, hit his first homer but took the loss in the Reds' 8-5 defeat at Chicago on Friday. Harang said it was his first homer since high school. ... Mike Hampton hit a two-run homer off Johan Santana and the Houston Astros beat the New York Mets 5-4. Hampton has 16 career home runs, second to Carlos Zambrano (19) among active pitchers. He homered for the first time since May 8, 2005, when he played for Atlanta and hit one off Houston's Chad Harville.

          IN A PINCH

Pinch-hitter Jeremy Hermida drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, pinch-hitter Chris Coghlan homered in the eighth and the Marlins won their fourth straight game in California, 6-3 over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night.

          RECOVERING RANGER

Texas Rangers pitcher Vicente Padilla tested positive for swine flu, though his symptoms are subsiding and he's expected to make his next start. Padilla was scratched from his start Wednesday against Boston due to flulike symptoms, and lab reports Friday indicated he had H1N1 influenza A. He is thought to be the first athlete in U.S. major pro sports to be diagnosed with swine flu.

          FREAK INJURY

Kansas City Royals right fielder Jose Guillen could miss up to 10 weeks due to a torn right knee ligament sustained while trying to put on a shin guard during a game. Guillen was injured in the second inning of Wednesday's 9-6 loss to the Los Angeles Angels, saying he felt his knee pop while bending over to put on a shin guard before his first at-bat. He was taken to the hospital during the game and test results showed a partially torn lateral collateral ligament.

          AILING HURLERS

Mets right-hander John Maine will seek a second opinion on his ailing right shoulder after aggravating it this week. Maine threw 65 pitches in a simulated game Tuesday in Port St. Lucie, Fla., but said afterward that he was feeling discomfort. Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz said Maine will meet some time next week with orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala. ... Chien-Ming Wang is awaiting a second opinion on his injured right throwing shoulder, and New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi didn't sound optimistic about getting the sinkerballer back this season. Wang went on the 15-day disabled list July 5 with a strained right shoulder.

          SPEAKING

"If there was an urgency to be somewhere else and an urgency from the team to have me somewhere else, I think it would be different. I just don't get that feeling. At this point, I feel like I'm going to be here.'' - Toronto pitcher Roy Halladay, the most sought-after player on the trade market, who expects he will still be pitching for the Blue Jays when the trade deadline passes.

            This Day in Baseball

On July 25 in Baseball History...

1930 - The Athletics pull off triple steals twice in one game against the Indians. This is the only time in Major League history that this has occurred.

1941 - Forty-one-year-old Lefty Grove wins his 300th game as the Boston Red Sox defeat the Cleveland Indians 10-6 before a Fenway Ladies Day crowd of 16,000. Though he will make six more starts, this will be Grove's last career win.

1956 - Brooklyn right fielder Carl Furillo is the first Dodger player to homer in Jersey City, as the Dodgers lose to the Reds, 2-1.

1959 - Fidel Castro supporters bring a halt to the International League contest between the Rochester Red Wings and Havana Sugar Kings with random gunshots from the grandstand. Red Wings third base coach Frank Verdi and Havana shortstop Leo Cardenas both suffer minor flesh wounds. The team is pulled from the field and Havana cancels the rest of the homestand, eventually relocating the franchise in Newark for the 1960 season.

1961 - Roger Maris hits four home runs, tying the American League record for a doubleheader (at least one in each game), as New York beats Chicago, 5-1, and 12-0. Mickey Mantle also homers off Frank Baumann in the first game. He ends the day with thirty-eight home runs to forty for Maris.

1967 - Race riots in Detroit force postponement of a Tigers-Orioles game. The games scheduled for the June 26-27 are shifted to Baltimore.

1972 - The National League wins the All-Star Game 4-3 at Atlanta behind hometown hero Hank Aaron's two-run home run and Joe Morgan's 10th-inning RBI single. It is the seventh time the classic has gone into extra innings; the Nationals have won all seven.

1977 - Pete Rose singles in the fourth inning of the Reds 9-8 loss to the Cardinals. It is Rose's 2,881st career hit, enabling him to surpass Frankie Frisch as the all-time leader among switch-hitters.

1998 - Baltimore's ageless wonder Jesse Orosco pitches in his 1,000th career game.

                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Francisco Giants at Colorado Rockies (-157, 9.5)

This might sound like a less-than bold prediction, but there is no way Jonathan Sanchez picks up his second career no-hitter Saturday. Not against a team that punishes left-handers like the Rockies.

Colorado is the seventh-best team in majors at hitting southpaws. The Rockies are batting .263 BA against lefties this season and have smacked 55 doubles and 32 home runs off of them.

And Sanchez wants no part of Colorado. In 36 1-3 career innings against the Rockies, Sanchez has been rocked for a staggering 33 runs. However, he has yet to face them this season.

"I just have to keep fighting ,” Sanchez told the Associated Press. “Keep working, that's all."

But the numbers don’t lie – and look for history to repeat itself.

                Pick: Rockies -157

Cleveland Indians at Seattle Mariners (-165, 8)

The key to this matchup is simple: Cleveland can’t hit Seattle pitching.

The Indians are a pathetic 29-for-132 (.219 BA) in four games against the Mariners this season, as they have scored an average of just 2.5 runs and struck out an average of seven times per game en route to dropping three of the meetings.

And those games were in Ohio.

In Washington, the Mariners are one of the best home pitching teams in baseball. The pitching staff is allowing a home ERA of just 3.29 and has yielded a major league-low 146 earned runs in their on park this year. Opponents also are batting just .236 BA at Safeco Field this season.

The Indians are one of the better hitting teams in the game. Just don’t expect them to show it this weekend.

                Pick: Seattle -165

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                  Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Streaking

                  Tommy Hanson (Atlanta Braves)

Think of the 22 year old’s recent, 10-day stint down in the Single-A Carolina League like taking a high performance car into the shop: a powerful engine sometimes needs a tuneup.

After racking up a record of 4-0 in his first six games, Hanson (5-0, 3.00 ERA) struggled in a 7-6 loss to Colorado, prompting a procedural move to demote him and help the team adjust its roster and add another reliever. During the time in the minors he faced no batters, but worked off the mound with pitching coach Roger McDowell at Turner Field.

And the move has helped Hanson get his mojo back. In his most recent start, an 11-3 win over San Francisco, he allowed just three runs on five hits over seven innings and struck out 11 batters.

"I think this is the best my arm's felt," Hanson told the Associated Press. "I felt like I was running out of gas but I wanted to battle through. I always want to stay in the game."

                  Edwin Jackson (Detroit Tigers)

The right-hander appears to finally be reaching his potential. The 25 year old entered the season with opponents batting better than .271 BA against him in more than 100 games. But as he's improved his command, his numbers have gotten dramatically better. Opponents are batting a miniscule .212 BA against him this year and Jackson is third in the AL with a 1.08 WHIP (walks + hits over innings pitched).

Jackson has yielded three or fewer earned runs in every start since May 5, including just six total in 20.1 innings this month. In his most recent outing, a 2-1 loss to the Yankees, Jackson went seven innings, allowing only a pair of solo home runs.

"Strikeouts will come, but you want quick outs all the time," Jackson told the Associated Press. "You have to pitch to contact."

                  Slumping

                  J.D. Martin (Washington Nationals)

The best news Martin had to take away from his first career start last week, was that there's plenty of room for improvement.

The 26 year old was hammered in his major league debut, yielding five runs on eight hits over just four innings. On the plus side, he did record his first major league strikeout. But only one.

The light-hitting Padres aren’t as talented as his first opponent – the Mets – but let’s just try to see if Martin can make it past the fourth.

"My cutter was spinning a little bit," Martin told the Washington Times. "But besides that, besides my balls being up a little bit, I felt OK.”

                  Gio Gonzalez (Oakland Athletics)

Things can’t get a whole lot worse for the left-hander.

The 23 year old was pitching so poorly that when he was demoted to the bullpen, yielding a run in only one inning was enough to get him put back in the rotation. But he should have stayed with the relievers.

Gonzalez (1-2, 9.33) was tagged for 11 earned runs on 11 hits in just 2 2-3 innings against the Twins. During that debacle, he also gave up four home runs and walked four.

MLB Top Weekend Power Trends 7/24-7/26
                      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      (Published 7-24-09)

With the trade deadline of July 31st rapidly approaching, baseball will continue to define its contenders and pretenders this weekend. In the National League, only one of the three divisions offers a compelling pennant race, the Central, where four teams are separated by two games in the loss column. In the American League, there is significantly more drama, with all three division races much in play. The Central takes center stage again there though over the next three days, with Chicago visiting Detroit for four games. The teams go into the weekend set tied atop the standings. Read on as we look at the action in both leagues’ Central Divisions, and highlight the Top Power Trends you’ll want to consider as you fill out your baseball wagering cards.

The N.L. Central Division is as tight as any in recent memory as we get ready to wrap up the month of July. St. Louis paces the standings but will be hard pressed to hang on to that spot as it visits red-hot Philadelphia this weekend. The defending champs have won 15 of their last 17 games to take control of the East. The Cardinals meanwhile are in the midst of a tough stretch that sees them take on not just one, but three hot teams including Houston and Los Angeles. Philadelphia will be looking to extend a 4-game winning streak over St. Louis dating back to last season.

Speaking of the Astros, they are at home taking on the Mets, having reached a season-high 3-games over .500. Houston comes off a key 3-game sweep of the Cardinals. Meanwhile, things aren’t so rosy in New York, as the Mets are just 7-16 in their last 23 games. Perhaps the only good news for the Mets is that they will be going with Johan Santana in Game 1 of this set, and SANTANA is 23-3 (+16.2 Units) against the money line vs. NL teams scoring 4.3 or less runs/game.

The other two teams that remain in the thick of the crowded N.L. Central are the Cubs and Brewers. Chicago is back at home this weekend, hosting the fading Reds who are on a prolonged slump of 13-23 since mid-June. Milwaukee is playing nearly as poorly as Cincinnati and is on the verge of falling out of the playoff picture. Thankfully for the Brew Crew, a 7-game homestand, which includes four games vs. Washington, starts on Monday. Before that however, Milwaukee will look to kick start itself against Atlanta this weekend. The Brewers took two of three in Atlanta last month. Keep an eye on the total in that series, as 15 of the last 19 head-to-head meetings have gone under the total.

In the American League, the big series pits Chicago and Detroit from the Motor City. The Sox have climbed back into a first place tie with the Tigers and are riding the momentum of Mark Buehrle’s perfect game on Thursday afternoon. A day-night doubleheader will start this crucial set. Detroit hopes to get back to the pace that saw it win 26 of its first 38 home games. Chicago has climbed back into the race by winning 22 of its last 33 games. In this head-to-head series, Chicago owns the edge, going 27-17 over the last three seasons, including 12-8 in Detroit.

Now, here’s a look at those Top Power Trends you’ll want to make note of as you handicap the weekend’s games.

Baltimore Orioles at Boston Red Sox [7:10 PM ET]

Orioles: Baltimore continued its struggles against the Red Sox by dropping the first game of this three-game series to see its overall losing skid reach four games. Saturday’s 3-1 setback lowered the Orioles’ record against Boston this season to 1-7. Jeremy Guthrie (7-8, 5.12 ERA) pitched eight strong innings in his last start and allowed just three hits. However, two of the hits went for home runs. The right-hander has allowed more homers (22) this season than all but one other American League starter. Guthrie is also tied for second in the most earned runs allowed. The right-hander received a no-decision in his lone start against Boston this season (April 17) despite getting tagged for eight runs on eight hits in six innings. Baltimore is now an AL worst 15-33 on the road.

The Under is 9-2 in Baltimore’s last 11 road games.

                              Key Injuries - None.

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Red Sox (-$2.10 O/U 9.5): Boston entered this series after dropping five games on their recently completed six-game road trip. That included suffering a three-game sweep at Yankee Stadium. However, Friday’s 3-1 win against the O’s lifted Boston’s home record to a sizzling 32-14. Jon Lester (8-7, 3.87 ERA) was a tough-luck loser in his last start after allowing five hits and three runs over seven innings. His opponent was Roy Halladay, who pitched a complete game gem at Toronto. Lester has been on a roll, yielding three earned runs or less in his last nine starts. In nine Fenway starts, Lester is 4-3 with a 3.14 ERA. He was dominant in his two previous starts against the Orioles this season, going 2-0 and not allowing an earned run over 14 innings. Boston is 12-7 in Lester’s first 19 starts this season.

The Under is 20-7-3 in Boston’s last 30 home games.

                              Key Injuries - None

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side of the Day)

St. Louis Cardinals at Philadelphia Phillies [4:05 PM ET]

Cardinals: St. Louis celebrated the acquisition of outfielder Matt Holliday by blasting the Phillies, 8-1. Holliday made a heavy contribution by recording four hits and a stolen base. The win was St. Louis’ first against the Phils in three tries this season and lifted the Cards’ road record to 27-25. Kyle Lohse (4-6. 4.21 ERA) looked like himself in his second start off the disabled list, allowing Houston three runs on five hits in seven innings. However, Lohse suffered a 3-2 loss, his third in a row. The Cards are now 4-8 in Lohse’s first 12 starts. Lohse has pitched well against Philadelphia over his career, registering a 3.41 ERA in six starts.

The Under is 7-2 in the Cards’ last nine overall outings.

                              Key Injuries - None.

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 6

Phillies (-$1.30, O/U 10): Philadelphia entered this three-game series by winning nine of its last 10 games to move 6 ½ games ahead of second place Atlanta in the NL East. However, Friday’s 8-1 loss lowered the Phils’ home record to just 25-25. That’s very strange, considering the Phils are 29-15 on the road. Rodrigo Lopez (2-0, 2.60) gets the start in Saturday’s nationally televised game. His spot in the rotation is in jeopardy, but only because the Phillies signed Pedro Martinez to presumably take over when ready. Lopez scattered five hits and struck out five over six innings of one run ball in his last start. The 33-year-old right-hander, coming off a nearly two-year absence, has allowed just five runs in three starts, posting a 2.60 ERA.

The Phils are 12-3 in their last 15 home games.

                              Key Injuries - None.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (OVER - Total of the Day)
