    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, July 10

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Astros continue their home series against the Nationals, the Tribe meet the Tigers, and the BoSox host the Royals.

Colliding in the Junior Circuit . . .

The Indians and Tigers will begin their weekend series in Detroit on Friday with Cliff Lee (4-8, 3.45 ERA) taking on Edwin Jackson (6-4, 2.59 ERA). Lefthander Lee has been tagged with a loss in each of his last two starts, and Cleveland is 3-7 over his last 10 trips to the mound. Righthander Jackson is on a string of three straight no-decisions, but he's given up three or fewer earned runs in 15 of his 17 starts so far this year. Jackson beat the Indians in his start back on May 9.

Elsewhere around the American League on Friday it'll be Toronto at Baltimore, Oakland at Tampa Bay, the White Sox at Minnesota, the Yankees at the Angels, Texas at Seattle, and Kansas City at Boston. The Royals will go with Brian Bannister (6-6, 3.87 ERA) at Fenway Park on Friday; the righthander beat the White Sox last time out. The Red Sox will counter with Jon Lester (7-6, 4.16 ERA); Boston has six wins in righthander Lester's last seven trips to the mound.

Clashing in the Senior Circuit . . .

Astros ace Roy Oswalt (5-4, 3.81 ERA) will get the call on Friday as Houston plays host to the Nationals and Scott Olsen (2-4, 6.04 ERA). Righthander Oswalt has given up just a single earned run in each of his last three starts, going 2-0 with a no-decision in those outings. Lefthander Olsen managed to beat the Braves in his outing on July 5, surrendering three earned runs over 8 2-3 innings.

Also on the National League schedule for Friday: Pittsburgh at Philadelphia, Cincinnati at the Mets, the Dodgers at Milwaukee, Atlanta at Colorado, Florida at Arizona, and San Diego at San Francisco. As well, the Cubs will host the Cardinals in a matinee matchup. Chicago has Rich Harden (5-5, 5.35 ERA) scheduled to start that contest, while St. Louis will turn to Brad Thompson (2-5, 4.92 ERA). Righthander Thompson has picked up a defeat in his last three starts.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

There are two games on the Canadian Football League schedule for Friday, with Calgary at Winnipeg and Hamilton at British Columbia. Oddsmakers like the Stampeders on the road in that first contest, setting them as 5.5-point favorites (with a total of 52 points). The Lions are then heavily favored to beat the Tiger-Cats in the late matchup; B.C. is a 13-point favorite, with the total set at 50 points.

Finally, the WNBA offers up a pair of contests on Friday, with San Antonio at Minnesota and Indiana at Chicago. The Fever have been the best wager in the league so far this season, as they've put up a 7-3 against-the-spread record to go along with their 8-2 straight-up mark. Indiana is coming off a 78-74 win over Atlanta last time out, with Tammy Sutton-Brown pouring in a team-high 22 points.

      Six-pack for Friday

-- Jamie Moyer has been big league teammates with six guys who are already in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

-- San Diego Padres have been around for 40 years; they've never had a pitcher throw a no-hitter, and no Padre batter has hit for the cycle.

-- Arizona led the Marlins 7-0 in 6th inning but lost by seven runs, as their bullpen got drilled for ten runs in 8th inning. Diamondbacks have been outscored 76-54 in the 8th inning this season.

-- Livan Hernandez is first pitcher in Mets' history to allow 3+ runs in the first inning of three consecutive starts.

-- There are 6,494 entrants in the Main Event at the World Series of Poker; first prize will be a hefty $8,546,485.

-- Nationals won 11-10 in completion of suspended game against the Astros, game that started 65 days ago. Game-winning eun was scored by Morgan, who wasn't on the Nationals 65 days ago. Winning pitcher was Hanrahan, who is a Pirate now, not a National. Weird stuff.

Friday's List of 13: Our major league baseball List of 13.......

      13) Brewers-- Had to be encouraged by way Parra pitched Thursday; it might be good thing for them All-Star break is coming, just like it was for Rays last summer. Braun's criticism of the pitchers wasn't a great idea.

      12) Marlins-- When a team trails 7-0 in 6th inning, then wins that game by seven runs, thats a show of strength, especially when the best player on the team didn't play in the game, just pinch-hit. Fish are contending despite being 13th in league in runs allowed.

      11) Cardinals-- Pujols is almost Bonds-like in his influence on the entire top of Cardinal order. Opposing pitchers are afraid to throw curveballs to Rasmus; if they walk him in front of Pujols, its a nightmare scenario.

      10) Phillies-- Won six of last seven games, have Pirates coming to town this weekend, so it looks like they've withstood their extended slump.

      9) Tigers-- Rodney has been perfect saving games-- Leyland's team has won 25 of 37 at home, is 17-10 vs lefty pitchers, only 29-28 vs righties. .

      8) Phillies-- As bad a stretch as they just went through, they never gave up first place in a lame NL East. Signing Pedro Martinez will give their pitching a boost, something the Mets' GM has declined to do so far.

      7) Angels-- Just when they got rolling a little, Guerrero messed up his knee, and now they'll have three middle infielders in lineup. Scrambling for starting pitching all season, they could use Santana to bounce back.

      6) Rays-- At some point, they're going to look at standings, then think about the day they blew 6-run lead in ninth inning in Cleveland, and they will want to puke. Longoria has been slumping for a month or so.

      5) Rangers-- How badly did the A's screw up naming Bob Geren as the manager when they had Ron Washington standing in 3rd base coaching box? Tough loss Thursday, with Gutierrez hitting 3-run tater off Wilson.

      4) Giants-- Have best starting pitching in baseball, are 29-14 at home. Sandoval deserves to somehow be named to the NL All-Star team.

      3) Bronx Bombers-- Red-hot right now; two pitchers they bought last winter are paying big dividends. Unheralded guys like Cervelli, Gardner have been sparkplugs throughout first half of season.

      2) Red Sox-- They've killed Bronx Bombers head-to-head but teams are tied in standings, four games ahead of Angels, 4.5 ahead of Rays. Looks like both rivals will make the playoffs, unfortunately.

      1) Dodgers--Orlando Hudson got banged up Thursday- they'll need him healthy in October. Still looks like they'll coast into playoffs. Came to NYC and made the Mets look bad- they have a lot of answers.

        Write-up

        Friday, July 10

Calgary (0-1) @ Winnipeg (0-1)-- Defending champ Stampeders gave up 27 points in first half last week, lost 40-27 at home to Montreal-- they were outgained 431-301 and had just 54 rushing yards. Bombers had an 162-33 edge in rushing yards at Edmonton last week, but lost 19-17.

Hamilton (0-1) @ BCLions (0-1)-- TiCats were down 30-3 to Toronto at half last week in their home opener- they allowed Argos 7.6 yards per rush, and were -2 in turnovers. Lions had just 103 passing yards in loss at Regina, a sloppy game (BC had six turnovers, 10 penalties/90 yards).

        Saturday, July 11

Saskatchewan (1-0) @ Toronto (1-0)-- Roughriders also turned ball over six times last week, and had 128 penalty yards, but they escaped with a win, outgaining Lions 314-217. Hard to tell if Argos pulled in reins after crushing Hamilton in first half last week- they completed just 14 of 29 passes, which isn't good, but they didn't turn ball over either.

Canadian bacon: CFL Week 2 preview and picks
        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Friday, July 10

Calgary Stampeders (0-1) at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (0-1)

The Blue Bombers defence showed nice things in the loss to the Edmonton Eskimos in Week 1. But young QB Stefan LeFors didn’t convince us he has what it takes to bring Winnipeg to the highest level.

This said, the defensive front of the Stampeders didn’t look good against the Alouettes and quick running backs like Fred Reid and Lavarus Giles could have a field day.

But even if they do, it is quite difficult to imagine Henry Burris and the Stampeders having another sloppy game like the one they had against the Montreal Alouettes. Even if Ken-Yon Rambo was to miss a second game due to injury, Burris can throw the ball with confidence to the amazing Titus Ryan or reliable receivers Nik Lewis, Jeremaine Copeland and Brett Ralph. The Stampeders are just too strong to fall in Winnipeg’s trap.

        Prediction: Calgary -6

Hamilton Tiger Cats (0-1) at B.C. Lions (0-1)

It is always very tough for any team from the Eastern Conference to win in the West, let alone Vancouver. It’s even worse when you have to face a Lions team that just lost its previous game.

Quarterback Quinton Porter has a lot to prove yet after running nine times instead of passing, like he did against the Argos. The Lions offensive line still looks pretty fragile but we can’t envision the defensive front of the Ti-Cats taking advantage of it to unsettle Buck Pierce like the Saskatchewan Roughriders managed to do last week.

The Lions running game is also their Achilles’ heel but their passing game should cut the Tiger Cats secondary in pieces. No team in the East won against the Lions in Vancouver since 2004. The Tiger Cats won’t reverse that trend in Week 2.

        Prediction: B.C. -13

        Saturday, July 11

Saskatchewan Roughriders (1-0) at Toronto Argonauts (1-0)

This will probably be the most exciting game of the week - one where the winner will be decided in the last seconds of the fourth quarter, if not in overtime.

The Roughriders stunned bettors by beating B.C. last week and Darian Durant was more than instrumental in that win. But the Argos have an improved offensive line and QB Kerry Joseph has many good targets to choose from, starting with Arland Bruce III. Running back Jamal Robertson has also been impressive in Week 1.

Despite the nice victory against B.C., they are still too many question marks regarding the Roughriders to think they could win this one in Toronto. This being said, the spread between the winner and loser will probably be minimal.

        Prediction: Toronto -3

        Last week: 2-2

          SCOREBOARD

          Friday, July 10

Washington at Houston (8:05 p.m. EDT). After a slow start, Astros ace Roy Oswalt is back to being dominant, allowing only three runs in his past three starts over 23 innings.

          STARS

          Thursday

-Tim Lincecum, Giants, carried a no-hit bid into the seventh inning and won his fourth straight start, baffling San Diego in San Francisco's 9-3 win.

-Brett Carroll, Marlins, had a pinch-hit, three-run homer that sparked a franchise-record 10-run eighth inning, and Florida stormed back from a seven-run deficit to defeat Arizona 14-7.

-Kelly Shoppach, Indians, hit a grand slam and had a career-high five RBIs, and Cleveland held on for a 10-8 victory over the Chicago White Sox.

-Franklin Gutierrez, Mariners, hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning to give Seattle a 3-1 victory over Texas.

-Garrett Atkins, Rockies, came through as a pinch-hitter with a two-out, two-run double in the eighth inning to lift Colorado past Atlanta 7-6.

-Joel Pineiro, Cardinals, scattered three hits in his third complete game this year and St. Louis rallied to a 5-1 win over Milwaukee.

          RECORD RALLY

Florida matched the team mark for the biggest comeback victory, using a franchise-record 10-run eighth inning to storm back from a seven-run deficit and defeat the Arizona Diamondbacks 14-7 on Thursday night. Arizona also set a club record for the largest blown lead. Three pinch-hitters - Ross Gload, Brett Carroll and Hanley Ramirez - each batted twice in the big inning.

          STATS

Carlos Pena had two RBIs in Tampa Bay's 3-2 win over Toronto on Thursday, his first since June 27, when he homered against Florida. The nine-game drought was his longest of the season. ... Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki had three hits to raise his major league-leading average to .361 in a 3-1 win over Texas.

          MILESTONES

Boston's David Ortiz became the 19th active player to reach 300 home runs, hitting his 10th in the last 29 games in the Red Sox's 8-6 loss to Kansas City on Thursday night. Ortiz is also the first Boston player to hit No. 300 since Manny Ramirez did it in 2002. ... Dexter Fowler stole his Rockies rookie-record 18th base of the season in Colorado's 7-6 win over Atlanta. The previous mark was 17 by Quinton McCracken in 1996.

          STREAK STOPPED

Tim Lincecum's scoreless innings streak ended at 29, third-longest in San Francisco history, in a 9-3 win over San Diego on Thursday night. Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry pitched 40 straight scoreless innings in 1967 and then went 39 in a row in 1970.

          NUMBERS GAME

Randy Wolf pitched the Los Angeles Dodgers past the New York Mets 11-2 on Thursday night for his first victory in eight outings, a day after he switched his jersey number 21 to 43 - the digits he used to wear with Philadelphia.

          EASY WIN

Joel Hanrahan earned his first win of the year while hanging out in his hotel room. The Pirates reliever was enjoying a day off in Philadelphia when his former Nationals teammates were finishing off a suspended game in Houston by winning 11-10 in the 11th inning, and he was the winning pitcher. On May 5 in Washington, Hanrahan pitched the top of the 11th and was on deck when the game was suspended with the score tied at 10 because of rain. In the interim, he was included in the June 30 deal with Pittsburgh for Nyjer Morgan, who scored the winning run Thursday.

          SUDDEN STOPPERS

Five Cleveland relievers combined for 4 2-3 scoreless innings in a 10-8 win over the Chicago White Sox, a club that has scored 96 runs in its last 15 games. The Indians' bullpen entered with a 5.13 ERA.

          POWER SURGE

Jayson Werth homered for the fourth straight game, Chase Utley hit an inside-the-park homer and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Cincinnati Reds 9-6 on Thursday night. It was Werth's seventh homer in 12 games as the Phillies became the second team in major league history to have four players hit 20 homers before the All-Star break. Raul Ibanez leads the team with 22, Ryan Howard has 21 and Utley and Werth have 20. The Toronto Blue Jays did it in 2000.

          HAPPY HOMER

Mark Teixeira ended a career-worst 23-game homerless drought in the Yankees' 6-4 victory over the Twins. Teixeira connected on the first pitch of the fifth inning. It was his 21st homer of the season and first in 96 at-bats, dating to June 12 against the Mets.

          SINKING

Roy Halladay was outpitched by David Price as Toronto lost its 10th in 12 games, 3-2 to Tampa Bay, and has fallen below .500 for the first time this season.

          WARMING UP

Manny Ramirez went 2 for 2 with two walks before taking a seat in the seventh inning of an 11-2 win over the New York Mets on Thursday night. He is 6 for 18 (.333) with two homers and seven RBIs in six games since returning from a 50-game drug suspension. "I'm getting there. I haven't played in two months. Got to go baby steps,'' Ramirez said.

          PEOPLE'S CHOICES

Philadelphia Phillies center fielder Shane Victorino and Detroit Tigers third baseman Brandon Inge were elected by fans for the last two roster spots for Tuesday's All-Star game.

          RICKEY'S NUMBER

The A's will retire Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson's No. 24 jersey during a **** ceremony Aug. 1, deemed "Rickey Henderson Day'' by the club in tribute of the career leader in runs scored and stolen bases. Henderson will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., on July 26.

          SPEAKING

"There's not a baseball player that's not superstitious. And if they tell you they're not, they're lying.'' - Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Randy Wolf, who won for the first time in eight outings on Thursday - a day after he switched his jersey number 21 to 43 - the digits he used to wear with Philadelphia.

          SEASONS

          July 10

1917 - Ray Caldwell of New York pitched 9 2-3 innings of no-hit relief as the Yankees beat the Browns 7-5 in 17 innings in St. Louis.

1932 - The Philadelphia A's defeated Cleveland 18-17 in an 18-inning game in which John Burnett of the Indians had a record nine hits. Jimmie Foxx collected 16 total bases, and Eddie Rommell of the A's pitched 17 innings in relief for the win, despite giving up 29 hits and 14 runs.

1934 - Carl Hubbell struck out Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons and Joe Cronin in succession, but the AL came back to win the All-Star game 9-7 at the Polo Grounds as Mel Harder gave up one hit in the last five innings.

1936 - Philadelphia's Chuck Klein hit four home runs in a 10-inning victory over the Pirates, and it wasn't in the cozy Baker Bowl. He hit them in spacious Forbes Field in a 9-6 win over Pittsburgh.

1947 - Don Black of the Cleveland Indians pitched a 3-0 no-hitter over the Philadelphia A's in the first game of a twin bill.

1951 - The NL hit four homers en route to an 8-3 triumph at Detroit, giving the league consecutive All-Star victories for the first time.

1982 - Larry Parrish of the Texas Rangers hit his third grand slam in seven days, off Milt Wilcox in the first game of a doubleheader against Detroit. The Rangers beat the Tigers 6-5. Parrish had hit his first on July 4 and his second on July 7.

2001 - Cal Ripken upstaged every big name in the ballpark, hitting a home run and winning the MVP award in his final All-Star appearance to lead the American League over the Nationals 4-1. Derek Jeter and Magglio Ordonez connected for consecutive home runs as the AL won its fifth in a row.

2007 - Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki went 3-for-3 with an inside-the-park home run to lead the American League to a 5-4 victory over the National League in the All-Star game.

            This Day in Baseball

On July 10 in Baseball History...

1919 - Cleveland manager Lee Fohl brings in little-used southpaw Fritz Coumbe to pitch to Babe Ruth with the bases loaded and a 7-4 lead in the ninth inning. Ruth's subsequent grand slam gives Boston an 8-7 win and gives the Indians a new manager. Center fielder Tris Speaker brings the Tribe home in second place and stays as skipper for seven years.

1920 - After banging out 11 straight hits, Tris Speaker is stopped by Tom Zachary of Washington. It's the record until Pinky Higgins of the Red Sox racks up 12 in a row in 1938.

1932 - To save train fare for the single-date appearance, Connie Mack takes along just two A's pitchers to Cleveland. Lew Krausse the A's starting pitcher, gives up four hits in the first inning and his replacement, Eddie Rommel pitches 17 innings in relief, giving up a record 29 hits, but wins 18-17. Cleveland's Johnny Burnett sets a major-league record by collecting nine hits in 11 at bats, while the A's Jimmie Foxx strokes six hits, including three home runs for a record-tying 16 total bases.

1934 - The second annual All-Star Game produces Carl Hubbell's amazing feat of striking out five future Hall of Famers in a row. After two batters reach in the first, he strikes out Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Jimmie Foxx. He adds Al Simmons and Joe Cronin to start the second. He leaves with the N.L. ahead 4-0, but the A.L. rallies for a 9-7 victory.

1936 - Philadelphia's Chuck Klein hits four home runs in five at bats in a ten-inning game at Forbes Field. His final home run beats the Pirates, 9-6.

1945 - The All-Star Game at Fenway Park is canceled because of travel restrictions enforced by World War II.

1951 - Exploding for four home runs, the N.L. trounces the A.L. 8-3 at the annual All-Star Game at Briggs Stadium in Detroit. Pittsburgh slugger Ralph Kiner hits a home run for the third year in a row.

1956 - In the All-Star Game, Ken Boyer of the Cardinals makes three sparkling plays at third base and gets three hits as the N.L. defeats the A.L. 7-3. Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams, and Stan Musial all homer. Mays' pinch-hit two-run home run off Whitey Ford is his seventh straight hit against the Yankee lefty.

1962 - Roberto Clemente has three hits as the N.L. wins 3-1 in the first of two All-Star Games of 1962 at Washington's D.C. Stadium.

1964 - Jesus Alou gets six hits against six different pitchers as the Giants beat the Cubs 10-3.

1968 - The N.L. announces plans to break into two divisions for 1969. The Eastern Division will feature New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Montreal, Chicago, and St. Louis. In the Western will be Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, Cincinnati, San Diego, and Atlanta.

1982 - Rangers slugger Larry Parrish hits his third grand slam of the week in a 6-5 win over the Tigers, tying the major-league record set by Detroit's Jim Northrup in 1968. Parrish also hit grand slams July 4 against Oakland and July 7 against Boston.

1984 - On the 50th anniversary of Carl Hubbell's legendary five consecutive strikeouts in the 1934 All-Star Game, N.L. pitchers Fernando Valenzuela and Dwight Gooden combine to fan six batters in a row for a new All-Star Game record in the N.L.'s 3-1 triumph. After Valenzuela whiffs Dave Winfield, Reggie Jackson, and George Brett in the fourth inning, Gooden, the youngest All-Star ever at age 19, fans Lance Parrish, Chet Lemon, and Alvin Davis in the fifth.

1997 - Hideki Irabu wins his much-anticipated major league debut, striking out nine in 6 2/3 innings as the Yankees defeat Detroit 10-3. The Japanese-born pitcher receives a standing ovation from the sellout crowd of 51,901 at Yankee Stadium.

                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oakland Athletics at Tampa Bay Rays (-160, 9)

Tampa Bay won’t be bashful about trying to take advantage of a young Oakland rotation that has featured four rookies for most of the season. But the real question is, will the Rays be able to score runs against the young hurlers?

The total has gone over in four of the team’s seven previous meetings this year. Tampa Bay, however, has emerged as one of the league’s most consistent under plays, winning close games with pitching, defense and timely hitting. The Rays have gone under the total in eight of their past 10 games overall.

Oakland also has started to solidify itself as an under pick, going under the total five straight times and nine of 10 overall. The reason? Chalk it up to that young pitching, which has allowed more than five runs only once during the past 10 games – also the only time it went over the total.

                Pick: Under

Pittsburgh Pirates at Philadelphia Phillies (-154, 9)

It’s no secret the Phillies have played poorly at home this season and still are five games below .500 at Citizens Bank Park. But the right pre-scription for an ailing home record would be a visit from their cross-state rivals. Pittsburgh enters the game with a 16-30 road mark and has lost seven of its past 10.

The Phillies’ biggest problem at home has been hitting the ball. The team has crossed home plate 205 times at home – the 12th-most in the league – but is hitting just .255 as a team in its own yard.

The Pirates, however, aren’t setting the world on fire when they leave the Steel City. Pittsburgh is batting a horrid .241 on the road and has one of the lowest away homer totals (29) in the majors.

Pittsburgh pitcher Zach Duke is no pushover, but the Pirates figure to have more trouble against the Phillies and Joe Blanton. The Pirates should abandon ship.

                Pick: Phillies

                  Weekend MLB cheat sheet
                  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The final weekend on the basepaths before this year’s All-Star break finds teams in both circuits fighting hard for position. That’s because teams in first place at the break go on to make the playoffs 70 percent of the time.

FYI: teams that find themselves 1 to 5 games back at the break are just a 47 percent proposition to land a spot in the postseason while teams of more than five games out hold a less than 10 percent chance of gaining an extra paycheck.

With that, let’s take a look at four of the bigger series on tap this weekend. Remember, all results are within the series and all pitcher records are ‘team starts’ (the team’s record in games in which the pitcher starts) versus this opponent.

                  Enjoy the weekend.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Weekend series preview: Cards vs. Cubs
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Rivalry renewed

The Cardinals and Cubs will resume their storied rivalry this weekend at Wrigley Field and it starts with an afternoon affair on Friday.
The Cubs entered yesterday's action just three games behind the NL Central-leading Cardinals. That makes this a crucial series as they try to close the gap heading into the All-Star break.

The host has won seven of the first nine meetings this season and the Cardinals are 6-3 against the Cubs so far in 2009.

                    Pitching matchup

Brad Thompson will go up against Rich Harden in the series opener.

The Cardinals went 3-1 in Thompson's first four starts this season, but have since dropped three in a row. The converted reliever hasn't pitched well lately, giving up 24 hits and 13 earned runs in his last 16 innings pitched. He has lasted beyond the sixth inning only once in seven starts this season.

Harden, meanwhile, hasn't posted Harden-like numbers so far this season. He is just 5-5 with a 5.35 ERA in 13 starts, including 2-4 with a 7.65 ERA at Wrigley Field. The Cubs have won just twice in Harden's last six trips to the hill.

Harden checks in at 1-4 with a 7.41 ERA in eight daytime starts. That compares to 4-1 with a 2.87 ERA at night.

                    Offensively challenged

The Cubs won the NL Central on the strength of their offense a year ago, but they appear to have left their bats in 2008.
They were held to a single run for the second straight game on Wednesday and are now averaging just 4.12 runs per game on the season.

Manager Lou Piniella is sick of talking about it.

“Frustrating? Look … what else can I say?” he told reporters following Wednesday's loss. “There’s nothing else to say, there really isn’t. You’ve just got to swing the bats better if we’re going to do anything the rest of the year, and that’s really the bottom line.
As a team, the Cubs are hitting just .247 so far in 2009.

                    One man show

It's no big secret the Cardinals will only go as far as Albert Pujols takes them. He's had another outstanding first half of the season, hitting .331 with 31 home runs and 82 RBIs.

Entering Friday's matchup, Pujols is just 4-for-17 over his last three games, so perhaps the Cubs are catching him at the right time.

The Cubs pitching staff did an exceptional job against Pujols in their early season series against the Cardinals at Wrigley, holding him to just one hit in 12 plate appearances. He went into that series on a 5-for-8 tear.

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        Streaking

John Danks, Chicago White Sox (7-6, 3.76 ERA)

Under bettors owe a big thanks to their boy Danks. The lefty has been hurling fireballs lately and has helped the under cash in his last six starts.

The numbers over his last five starts have been particularly incredible: only six earned runs allowed, 31 strikeouts, just eight walks surrendered and only two home runs. Not to mention the fact he went at least seven runs in all five outings.
This guy is becoming more reliable than the wind in Chicago and it seems the oddsmakers aren’t really taking notice. Danks is a small underdog today in Minnesota and the total is set at 8.5 runs.

Note: The Twins won the last meeting with the Sox 20-1 in late May.

Ricky Nolasco, Florida Marlins (6-6, 5.42)

If there’s something hotter than Nolasco right now, we don’t know what it is. The Marlins right-hander hasn’t surrendered more than two earned runs in any of his last six starts and the Marlins are 5-1 in those outings.

All of these numbers have come since Nolasco returned to Marlins after getting demoted to the minors at the end of May. And you can’t blame the Marlins for doing it because he was 1-5 at that point and had just come off two games in which he allowed 16 earned runs combined.

I guess he didn’t much like riding from game to game on buses because he’s pitching like he never wants to see a minor league ball park again.

                        Slumping

Rich Harden, Chicago Cubs (5-5, 5.35)

If you don’t like playing in the daytime, you’re not going to enjoy playing for the Cubbies much. Just ask their righty Harden, who isn’t living up to the high hopes this season.

Harden is just fine on the road with a 3-1 record and an ERA below 3.00, but his ERA balloons to more than seven runs at home and he’s a miserable 1-4 during the daytime. Today’s game against the Cards is scheduled for 1:20 p.m. in the Windy City. The good news for Harden is that the wind is blowing only slightly out to left field as of Friday morning.
