        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
        Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Streaking

        Randy Wells (Chicago Cubs)

Chicago Cubs rookie right-hander Randy Wells hasn't received much backing from his team's hitters or bullpen this season.

Wells has five straight quality starts since throwing five scoreless innings in his season debut May 8 after being recalled from Triple-A Iowa.

He received six runs of support in his first four starts, but it's the Cubs bullpen that's been more to blame recently for keeping him from his first major league victory.

Wells allowed two runs over 6 2-3 innings Sunday in Cincinnati, but Carlos Marmol failed to record an out and gave up the tying run in the eighth inning of a 6-3 win in 14 innings. Wells took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and yielded one earned run June 2 in Atlanta, but Marmol allowed a run in the eighth and Kevin Gregg gave up two in the ninth in a 6-5 loss in 12 innings.

"It stinks not getting the win," Wells told the team's official Web site. "But stuff happens. That's baseball."

        Tim Lincecum (San Francisco Giants)

The Giants will turn to reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum on Friday night when they face the Athletics and rookie Vin Mazzaro, who has yet to allow a run through two outings.

Oakland (27-32) went 4-2 against San Francisco (31-28) last year, and has not lost the season series since going 2-4 eight years ago. The Athletics have won seven straight road meetings.

One of the losses for Oakland last season came to Lincecum (5-1, 2.96 ERA), who gave up five hits and struck out 11 on June 28, 2008, in a 1-0 victory that ended the Giants' seven-game overall losing streak to the Athletics.

That is Lincecum's only victory in five interleague starts. He is 1-0 with a 2.38 ERA in two career outings versus Oakland, and 1-1 with a 6.33 ERA in interleague play.

Lincecum is having another strong year, going unbeaten since his second start of the season. The Giants have dropped three of his last five outings, though, and the right-hander won Sunday by giving up two runs over 7 1-3 innings in a 3-2 victory at Florida.

"The first seven went pretty well," Lincecum said. "I had a tough time finding the strike zone but when I needed to I got outs."

        Roy Halladay (Toronto Blue Jays)

The last time Roy Halladay won seven consecutive decisions, his streak was halted by the Marlins.

This time, he'll attempt to extend his current run at Florida's expense on Friday night when the Toronto Blue Jays welcome the Marlins to Rogers Centre in the start of a three-game set.

Halladay (10-1, 2.52 ERA) leads the major leagues in wins and is also third in the AL with 88 strikeouts. Over his last nine outings, the right-hander has gone 7-0 with a 2.03 ERA while reaching at least the seventh inning in each contest.

The 2003 AL Cy Young Award winner has received 54 of his 81 runs of support this season over his last nine appearances.

"It's the best run support I've had, that's for sure, and that makes a huge difference," Halladay said. "There were games early on where I didn't necessarily pitch great and we scored enough runs. It makes a huge difference and lets you get into the swing of things."

This is the first time he's put together a winning streak this long since he went 7-0 with a 2.48 ERA over 11 starts from April 22-June 13, 2006. Five days later, that came to an end against the Marlins (29-33) as he allowed four runs and eight hits with seven strikeouts in six innings of a 4-1 defeat.

Halladay will attempt to avoid a similar fate after tossing just 97 pitches in a seven-hitter en route to a 4-0 win over Kansas City on Sunday. It was the five-time All-Star's second straight complete game, raising his career total to 43, and 12th shutout.

Halladay has won his last five home starts, posting a 1.93 ERA with 39 strikeouts in 42 innings.

        Slumping

        Joel Pineiro (St. Louis Cardinals)

Joel Pineiro (5-6, 3.97 ERA) would like to see the offense continue to roll as he tries to avoid a fourth consecutive losing start for the first time since dropping a career-high five in a row with Seattle from Aug. 6-27, 2003.

The right-hander has received only four total runs of support during his current losing streak, in which he's recorded a 5.63 ERA. That slide is also part of a seven-game stretch that has seen him go 1-6 despite a 4.09 ERA while the offense produced 10 total runs.

Pineiro lost again Sunday, getting reached for three runs and 10 hits in five innings of a 7-2 loss to Colorado.

"You know that, but you can't be thinking about that," Pineiro told the team's official Web site of the limited run support. "Because then you put more pressure on yourself and you kind of not worry about what you have to do on the mound.

"You can't be thinking about that too much. You've still got to go out there and pitch your game."

Pineiro is 3-2 with a 5.66 ERA in 10 games - eight starts - against Cleveland all when he was in the AL from 2000-07.

        Ricky Nolasco (Florida Marlins)

Florida now will give the ball to Ricky Nolasco (2-6, 8.17), who has lost his last three starts with a 12.79 ERA.

A 15-game winner last year, the right-hander was sent to Triple-A New Orleans on May 23. Now set to make his first start against Toronto, Nolasco lost despite an impressive return Sunday. He gave up three runs - two earned - and 10 hits in seven innings of a 3-2 defeat to San Francisco.

"I did what I could do to keep us in the game," said Nolasco, who received no runs of support. "Obviously, the ultimate goal is to win, so I'm not satisfied with what I did."

Nolasco is 2-2 with a 5.52 ERA in five interleague starts.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Mets at New York Yankees [7:05 PM ET]

Mets: The Mets have hit the fewest homers in baseball with just 37. But now they’re playing at the new Yankee Stadium, which has yielded a major league high 105 home runs. That’s just 10 off the record pace of 303 hit in the high altitude of Coors Field in Colorado in 1999. The Mets have a higher on-base percentage than the Yankees at .361 to .354, but the Yankees have outscored the Mets, 331-267. Third baseman David Wright has been on fire going 17-for-26 with five RBIs in his last seven games. Livan Hernandez is pitching one day ahead of his normal schedule because of John Maine going on the DL with a shoulder injury. Hernandez threw 116 pitches in his last start on Sunday. Hernandez is 4-0 with a 2.81 ERA in his last eight starts. However, he is 0-3 with a 6.37 ERA in five starts versus the Yankees.

The Mets are 19-7-2 Over in their last 28 interleague road games.

Key Injuries - John Maine (shoulder), Carlos Delgado (hip) and Jose Reyes (calf) are all on the DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4 (UNDER - Total of the Day)

Yankees (-$2.05, O/U 10.5 under $1.15): The Yankees have won 22 of the past 35 meetings in the series. The Mets, though, took four of six last year, including sweeping three games at the old Yankee Stadium. The Yankees lead the majors with 57 homers at home, but their confidence could be down after being swept in three games at Boston. Alex Rodriguez loves to bat against Livan Hernandez. He’s batting .625 against him with three homers and four doubles in 16 career at-bats. Joba Chamberlain is making his first start against the Mets. The Yankees are 7-1 in Chamberlain’s past eight starts as a home favorite. Chamberlain is 2-0 with a 3.82 ERA in his past six outings. He is 0-1 with a 5.48 ERA in five starts at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees have won 12 of their past 16 home contests. The Yankees also have won 18 of their 25 games when favored.

Key Injuries - Relief pitchers Damaso Marte (shoulder) and Brian Bruney (elbow) are on the DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side of the Day)

Oakland Athletics at San Francisco Giants [10:15 PM ET]

Athletics: The A’s hope they have uncovered their own Tim Lincecum-type ace in rookie Vin Mazzaro. He has the longest career-opening scoreless streak in A’s history having not allowed a run in 13 2/3 innings. Mazzaro made his major league debut June 2 against the White Sox and held them scoreless for 6 1/3 innings, yielding three hits in a 5-0 victory. Mazzaro followed that up on Sunday by shutting out the Orioles, 3-0. He allowed five hits in 7 1/3 innings. Oakland is playing well, having won eight of its last 10 games. The A’s also have won seven straight road games against the Giants. Oakland won four of six meetings versus San Francisco last season. The A’s have not lost a season series from the Giants since 2001. Offense has been a problem for the A’s. They rank 29th in batting average and 19th in runs scored.

The A’s are 16-35 in their last 51 road games versus a right-hander.
The Under has cashed in 14 of Oakland’s past 19 games.

Key Injuries - Outfielders Ryan Sweeney (knee) and Travis Buck (oblique) are on the DL.

              PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Giants (-$1.55, O/U 7 under -$1.15): Tim Lincecum won last year’s National League Cy Young Award and he’s been just as good this season ranking among the league leaders in strikeouts (95), innings (79) winning percentage (.833) and ERA (2.96). He has won five straight decisions during a span of nine starts. Lincecum is averaging 10.8 strikeouts per nine innings and is 2-0 with a 3.09 ERA when pitching at AT&T Park. In seven night games, he’s 4-0 with a 2.54 ERA. Lincecum does have a 6.33 ERA in interleague competition, but is 1-0 with a 2.38 ERA in two career outings versus the A’s. San Francisco is hot, winning 11 of its last 16. The Giants are 11-4 (73 percent) when Lincecum has been a home favorite. The Giants have won eight of Lincecum’s 11 home starts this season. Pablo Sandoval is batting .370 with 17 RBIs during his past 25 games.

The Under is 22-8-2 in the Giants’ last 32 games versus a team with a losing record.
The Under is 19-7-1 in the last 27 meetings in San Francisco.

Key Injuries - Travis Ishikawa is doubtful because of personal bereavement.

              PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Hot Lines: Friday's best MLB bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cincinnati Reds at Kansas City Royals (-112, 9)

After their last game, it seemed like even local wildlife was out to add to the Kansas City Royals' misery. Manager Trey Hillman, however, said the reason for his team's dismal stretch is a lot less complicated.

Hillman and the Royals host the Cincinnati Reds for the first time in 10 years when the teams open a three-game series Friday night.

The Royals (25-34) have lost 23 of their last 30 and are 2-11 since May 27. On Thursday, they fell 4-3 to Cleveland in 10 innings when Shin-Soo Choo hit a walkoff single over second base that hit a low-flying gull and ricocheted past center fielder Coco Crisp.

"Crazy things happen in this game," Crisp said. "It was hit so sharply, I felt like I had a chance. You never know what the heck is going to happen."

Hillman wasn't about to blame a bird for the Royals' latest loss. His team blew a two-run lead in the eighth, set up by two fielding errors. Kansas City had five errors in the series to give it 11 in the last eight games.

"If we don't make errors the first day and today, we should sweep this series," Hillman said.

After going 13-5 in interleague play last season, the Royals dropped two of three against St. Louis last month, getting shut out twice. Still, given the way it has played against the AL lately, Kansas City is welcoming a change.

                Pick: Cincinnati +104

Seattle Mariners at Colorado Rockies (-134, 9)

The Colorado Rockies have played more road games than any other team in the majors. Based on the results of their just-completed trip, now might not be the best time for their schedule to start balancing out.

The Rockies look to ride the momentum from their longest road winning streak in more than a decade into a nine-game homestand as they go for their ninth straight victory Friday night in the opener of a three-game interleague series against the Seattle Mariners.

Colorado (28-32) finished an 11-game road trip with eight straight wins. It's the Rockies longest overall winning streak since an 11-game run in September 2007 and their longest on the road since they won eight straight in April 1997.

Ubaldo Jimenez (4-6, 3.91) will take the ball for the Rockies. The right-hander has delivered seven quality starts in his last eight outings, including a 7-2 win at St. Louis on Sunday in which he held the Cardinals to two runs and four hits while striking out nine in eight innings.

Jimenez, who's 2-2 with a 4.38 ERA at Coors Field, has never faced Seattle.

                Pick: Colorado -134

                    Lady Luck: WNBA best bets
                    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seattle Storm at Minnesota Lynx (-4, 158)

The Minnesota Lynx are off to a fast start for the second straight year. This time, they're hoping to maintain that momentum through the season.

The Western Conference leaders, the highest-scoring team in the WNBA, go for a second straight victory over a top West contender when they host the Seattle Storm on Friday night.

Minnesota (3-0) fizzled after a 5-0 start last year, but is hoping that the experience will help it keep up its strong play throughout this season. The Lynx missed the playoffs in 2008, finishing 16-18.

Wednesday night's 87-76 win over Los Angeles should certainly help toward that end. Although the Sparks played without league MVP Candace Parker, they still featured a strong, veteran roster after reaching the West finals last year.

A win over the Storm - something Minnesota couldn't manage in three meetings last year - would further build its confidence.

Seattle (2-1) finished second in the West with a 22-12 record in 2008, even though two-time league MVP Lauren Jackson missed 13 games due to the Olympics and an ankle injury.

The Australian center has returned after flirting with free agency, averaging 23.0 points in the Storm's first three games.

After a home-and-home sweep of Sacramento last weekend, Seattle lost 73-66 at Indiana on Tuesday.

                    Pick: Storm

Phoenix Mercury at Sacramento Monarchs (Pick, 169)

Phoenix hasn't enjoyed much success lately at Arco Arena. After starting the season with two straight wins, though, the Mercury may be able to expect better results Friday night.

The Mercury look to remain unbeaten when they open a home-and home series Friday night in Sacramento against a Monarchs club still seeking its first victory of the season.

Phoenix is now seeking its best start since 1998, when it finished 19-11 and earned a trip to the WNBA finals, where it lost to the Houston Comets in three games.

The Mercury have lost 14 of 17 at Arco Arena since winning their first four visits there.

The Monarchs (0-2) are seeking to bounce back from a pair of 10-point defeats to Seattle, losing 80-70 on the road Sunday after falling 71-61 to the Storm on Saturday.

Sacramento has won 11 of 13 regular-season home games dating to last season, but starting with Saturday night's game in Phoenix, the Monarchs play six of seven on the road.

                    Pick: Monarchs

                        Len's Top 5

TGIF everyone, here's my Top 5 for June 12, 2009 from Len Berman Sports.

                        1. Quick Hits

The Lakers are one game away from the NBA title after beating Orlando 99-91 in overtime. They can wrap it up in 5 games Sunday.
The Stanley Cup will be decided tonight in Detroit: Game 7 Red Wings and Penguins.
The Red Sox sweep the Yankees and are now 8-0 vs the Yanks this season.
The Spanning the World highlite of the night: a batted ball hits a seagull in Cleveland and bounces away enabling the Indians to beat Kansas City. The rule? Hitting fowl is fair.
Phil Mickelson shot a 2-under 66 in his return to golf as his wife battles breast cancer. He's 4 shots off the lead at the St. Jude Classic in Memphis.
ESPN The Magazine is planning a nude athlete edition. Please God don't include golfer John Daly or any sumo wrestlers.

                        2. Fan Fare

Went to a Mets game the other night as a "civilian." First time since high school. Other than the price of the ticket, I enjoyed being a fan. Even the cost of hot dogs and peanuts didn't bother me. I did have one gripe. Carlos Beltran dropped a ball in center field and if you blinked, you missed it. And yet with all the cameras and high tech scoreboards there was no replay shown. Do they only show good things from the home team? That hilite would be aired countless times on ESPN and would be seen my millions around the country. Why can't you enhance the viewing experience for the 39,000 who actually paid to watch the game and cared the most?

                        3. Lemme in Coach

We all rail against what's wrong with sports in the Top 5. (By the way, in case you didn't know, just hit "reply" to the Top 5 email and I'll get your message.) Well here's something that's right in sports. Current and former NFL Coaches are going on an inaugural USO Coaches Tour to Iraq and Afghanistan. Very cool. I'd love to listen to the Giants Tom Coughlin, the Titans Jeff Fisher, and former Steelers coach Bill Cowher, as they "fire up" the troops.

                        4. Friday Mailbag

I guess you guys didn't like my idea of tinkering with the Triple Crown to make it easier for a horse to win it.
E.G. wrote:" Why dilute the triple crown? Let's keep it rare and special.

When I wrote about "illegal swimsuits" and how doing away with suits altogether might be the answer, M.N. responded: "Back in the day the boys wore no swim suits during swim class at school. I wonder what George Constanza would say about "shrinkage?"
                        Editor's Note: This isn't a medical blog.

R.B. writes: "Who are the Yankees kidding...Chien-Ming Wang is still pitching like Charles Wang."
Editor's Note: I've never seen the Islanders owner pitch.

As for the Phoenix Mercury putting advertising logos on their jerseys, P.P writes: "I just can't wait to root for the famous baseball team, The New York Pfizers."
Editor's Note: Certainly a formula for success.
