    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, June 12

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Penguins and Red Wings battle for the Stanley Cup, and the New York teams meet up in the Bronx in interleague action.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

It's New York - New York on baseball's interleague schedule for Friday as the Yankees play host to the Mets. Joba Chamberlain (3-1, 3.79 ERA) gets the ball for the Bronx Bombers; the righthander has allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of his past six starts, going 2-0 with four no-decisions. The Mets counter with Livan Hernandez (5-1, 3.88 ERA). Righthander Hernandez tossed seven scoreless innings in a win over the Nationals last time out, allowing just four hits.

The Red Sox, meanwhile, will begin their interleague matchup with the defending-champion Phillies on Friday night. Boston will send Jon Lester (5-5, 5.09 ERA) to the mound in the series opener, with the lefthander on a two-game winning streak. Lester held the Rangers to one run on two hits in a complete-game victory last time out. Joe Blanton (4-3, 5.46 ERA) starts for Philadelphia; the righthander has allowed just four earned runs over his last 20 innings pitched.

Also on the schedule for Friday: Minnesota at the Cubs, Atlanta at Baltimore, Detroit at Pittsburgh, St. Louis at Cleveland, Florida at Toronto, Washington at Tampa Bay, the Dodgers at Texas, the White Sox at Milwaukee, Cincinnati at Kansas City, Seattle at Colorado, San Diego at the Angels, and Oakland at San Francisco. As well, the lone NL matchup has Houston at Arizona, with Dan Haren (4-4, 2.33 ERA) starting for the D-Backs; Haren hasn't taken a loss since May 12.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The National Hockey League season comes to an end on Friday night, with the Red Wings hosting the Penguins in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final. Pittsburgh forced the deciding contest with a 2-1 home win in Game 6 on Tuesday night. The Pens got goals from Jordan Staal and Tyler Kennedy in that game, while Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 25 of 26 Detroit shots. Kris Draper had the lone Red Wings goal, and Chris Osgood made 29 saves. The home team has won every game so far in this series, and Detroit is pegged as a -180 favorite at Joe Louis Arena for Friday night. The oddsmakers have listed the game's total at 5.5 goals.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, the Monarchs will be searching for their first win of the season on Friday night when they host the Mercury in one of four games on the WNBA schedule. Sacramento lost back-to-back games to the Storm on opening weekend to sit at 0-2 on the season. Seattle will play in Minnesota on Friday night, while Indiana gets a visit from Los Angeles, and Atlanta tries to pick up a victory up in Chicago.

      Six-pack for Friday

-- Colossal collapse by Magic Thursday; they led by three and had the ball with 0:12 left, but lost because they bricked two foul shots, then Nelson didn't get out on Derek Fisher when shooting a trey was his only option at time. Choke would be appropriate to describe it.

--Phillies came from behind and beat Mets again; Mets went with the 40-year old lefty Takahashi to pitch to Utley-Howard-Ibanez, which ended in disaster when Ibanez took him deep to win game.

-- Red Sox are 8-0 against Bronx Bombers this season, but only lead them by two games in standings. Go figure.

-- David Price only got 13 outs with his 105 pitches against Angels-- at this rate, he might be headed to becoming a closer.

-- Only nine of 28 starting pitchers got a decision Thursday-- lot of close games. Every starting pitcher threw at least 81 pitches- the 123 pitches Sabathia threw in Fenway were the most of the day.

-- I'm pinning this loss squarely on Orlando players/coaches, but refs in NBA are a joke: Kobe Bryant swings his elbows with the ball and whacks Nelson on the jaw in the middle of the floor- no foul is called. Would it be that difficult to just ref the game like a normal game?

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday's List of 13: Our major league baseball List of 13..........

      13) Reds 31-28-- Jay Bruce is hitting .214, Volquez is on DL, but they are keeping their heads above water. Good manager, that Dusty Baker.

      12) Rays 31-31-- They insist on batting BJ Upton leadoff, despite his dismal numbers. If Rays were .500 two years ago, they'd be throwing a parade for them-- now they're a disappointment. Gotta love people.

      11) Cubs 29-28-- Just 6-11 in one-run games, 13-18 on road-- they are definitely underachieving, but are only 2.5 games out of first place.

      10) Giants 31-28-- When you have serious starting pitching, you'll be in every game. Could use another hitter for run ar the Wild Card.

      9) Cardinals 33-28-- Rotation is messed up; they're 4-6 in last 10 games, only 21-21 vs righty starters, but they have the single best player.

      8) Brewers 33-27-- Dropped here after getting swept three straight by Colorado, but Hoffman has been super as the closer so far.

      7) Mets 31-27-- Everybody gets offended when Cole Hamels calls them chokers, then they give up late-inning leads on consecutive nights against the Phillies. Whomever misdiagnosed Reyes' hamstring should be fired.

      6) Blue Jays 34-28-- Lost tough 1-0 game in Texas Thursday; getting lot of mileage out of suspect players. They better not trade Halladay.

      5) Rangers 34-25-- Having super year while getting very little from their injured star Hamilton-- president Ryan has helped their pitching a lot, mostly by bringing in new pitching coach Mike Maddux.

      4) Bronx 34-26-- Will probably make playoffs even if they lose division, but their inability to beat Boston has to be a concern. You know they'll be buyers at trading deadline in late July.

      3) Phillies 35-23-- At some point, champs' lack of starting pitching has to become an issue, but right now, their superior defense and hitting in the clutch are bailing them out.

      2) Red Sox 36-24-- Ortiz hit three HRs in four games, but now has to sit in Philly, since there is no DH in NL parks. Their wealth of prospects give them a huge edge in buyer's market at trading deadline.

      1) Dodgers 40-21-- LA's outfield is playing so well, going to be hard to decide which one sits when Ramirez comes back in three weeks. Their biggest problem right now is settling down back end of rotation.

              NHL Finals

Home team is 6-0 in this series, with Penguins scoring two goals total in three games in this building; including LY's Finals, Pittsburgh lost five of six in Motor City, winning only in OT in Game 5 LY, when they staved off elimination- Red Wings outscored them 21-6 in those six games. Last game, Detroit had only 12 shots on goal in first two periods, in a clean game where only four penalties were called. Anything can happen in one game, but Penguins haven't come close yet in this arena.

Pittsburgh Penguins at Detroit Red Wings (-190, 5.5)

Detroit had a shot for its second straight Cup on Tuesday night in Game 6, but fell 2-1 in Pittsburgh. The Red Wings have one more chance to secure it, and they will try at home where they are 11-1 in the playoffs - 3-0 in this series.

"It's no different," said Osgood, 15-7 with a 2.00 goals-against average in the playoffs. "Game 7 is just another game to win the Cup. That was our Game 7 in Pittsburgh.

"It makes no difference if it's Game 4, 5, 6, or 7. If you can win the Cup, you've got the exact same type of game. The only difference is they have a chance now, too."

That depends on whom you ask.

The home team won each of the first six games. The Penguins went 1-2 at Joe Louis Arena in last year's finals and have been outscored 11-2 in three losses in this series.

Given the chance to practice in Detroit on Thursday, Penguins coach Dan Bylsma decided the upside wasn't enough to sacrifice another day at home. The Penguins skated one last time in Pittsburgh before flying to Detroit.

Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby has been bottled up by forward Henrik Zetterberg, who hits the ice pretty much every time Crosby does, and hasn't scored a goal in six finals games in Detroit.

Crosby and teammate Evgeni Malkin, who led the NHL with 113 points in the regular season, went pointless in the Game 6 win. That was Pittsburgh's first postseason victory since the dynamic duo joined the team in which neither star got on the score sheet.

The Penguins can't expect to dethrone the Red Wings in Detroit if Crosby and Malkin are blanked again.

"I'd always like to score more," said Crosby, who has a goal and two assists in the series. "I look back, and on some of the chances I've had just didn't really get a whole lot of luck. Now is not the time to think about what could have been. The only way I'm looking at here is it's a great opportunity, and I've got to try to go out there and play my best game in the playoffs.

"No matter what's happened before, whether I had one goal or 10, doesn't really matter."

History strongly favors the Red Wings heading into the final game of the season. Home teams are 12-2 in championship Game 7s and have won 80 of the 128 playoff series that have gone the distance (62.5 percent).

The Red Wings are 12-7 overall in Game 7s, but haven't played one in the finals since 1964 and haven't hosted a decisive game with the Cup on the line since 1955 - a 3-1 victory over Montreal.

                  Pick: Under

What bettors need to know: Stanley Cup finals Game 7
                    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Penguins at Detroit Red Wings (-180, 5.5)

                    Home ice is nice

The home team has won every game this series and Pittsburgh must try to break that trend in order to win its first Stanley Cup since 1992. The Wings have only lost once at home (11-1) in this year’s playoffs.

The Wings will have last change at home, and will have the matchup advantages against Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. Detroit has done an excellent job containing Pittsburgh’s two young superstars at home. Malkin has two assists in three games in Detroit while Crosby has yet to register a point.

                    Goaltending

Detroit’s Chris Osgood and Pittsburgh’s Marc-Andre Fleury have played well this postseason, but both have been much better at home than on the road.

Osgood is sporting a 1.40 goals against average at the Joe Louis Arena compared to a GAA of almost a goal and a half higher on the road.

Fleury made several spectacular stops in the third period of Game 6 to keep the Penguins in front. In Detroit, however, he has not been as fortunate. Fleury’s performance in Game 5 was not awful, but he did let in five goals. The young netminder also allowed some questionable goals in Games 1 and 2 at Detroit.

                    Secondary scoring

Typically this section would be about Detroit’s depth, but several Wings players have gone missing this series, most notably Marian Hossa. The All-Star forward, a perennial point-per-game player, has gone relatively unnoticed throughout the series. Jiri Hudler, Tomas Holmstrom and Daniel Cleary have all been playing below their capabilities as well.

Jordan Staal has emerged as a secondary scoring option for the Pens. Staal had a game-changing, short-handed goal in Game 4 and was responsible for the opening goal in Tuesday’s tilt. Crosby and Malkin have not registered a point in the Pens’ last two games but Pittsburgh has managed to stay alive in the series.

                    Overcoming the odds

Detroit is currently -180 to win Game 7, the most either team has been favored this series. Home teams are 12-2 in Game 7s of Stanley Cup finals, and a road team has only won the Stanley Cup once after trailing 3-2 in the final series (1-21).

However, in sports, any team can win on any given day. Good luck, bad bounces and turnovers 180 feet from the net can be the difference between a Stanley Cup win and a summer of regret.

                    Other notes

                    - Penguins are 5-2 in their last seven games following a win.

                    - Red Wings are 5-1 in their last six after scoring two goals or less in their previous game.

                    - The under is 4-0 in Pittsburgh’s last four road games.

                    - The over is 8-2-2 when Pittsburgh is a road underdog of +151 to +200

                    - The under is 5-0 in Detroit’s last five games.

Stanley Cup finals: Hot betting trends

We’re down to the last hockey game of the season for bettors to cash in. With that in mind we thought we’d try and dig up some saucy stats and trends to help our readers with their wagers for Friday’s Game 7.

Please feel free to add any other numbers you think worthy in the comments below:

-Friday’s game marks the 15th Game 7 in the history of the Stanley Cup finals. The home team has won 12 of the previous 14 cases. The only teams to lose on their home ice in the finals were the ’71 Blackhawks and the ’45 Red Wings.

-The home side has also won every game in this series and, outside of Game 6, covered the puckline as well.

-There are a handful of Detroit players who have a shot at lifting the Cup for a fifth time, but the club hasn’t been tested to this degree in any of its past four championship seasons. The Wings swept the Flyers and Capitals (1997 and 1998), polished off the Hurricanes in five games (2002) and shut the door on the Pens in six last season.

-While Chris Osgood has been the starting goalie on more than one championship team, but he hasn’t always played well in tough spots. His solid rookie campaign was tarnished after the top seeded Wings were eliminated by the eight seeded San Jose Sharks in 1994.San Jose finished off Detroit on a goal setup by Osgood’s poor clearing attempt. The veteran netminder is also 1-3 in his last four elimination games with a goals against average of 3.75.

-The under has been a good bet in this Cup finals and a lot of that may have to do with the fewer amount of penalties being called. In last year’s finals, the two clubs amassed 22 minor penalties in the series’ first two games. In the first two games of this year's rematch there was only seven penalties called and most of those came in the final minute of Game 2. Pittsburgh and Detroit each had two power play chances in Tuesday’s contest with both sides finishing without a special teams marker.

                      A couple other quick ones:

-The Pens are 38-14 in their last 52 games playing on two days’ rest.

-Red Wings are 5-1 in their last six after scoring two or less in their previous game.

-The under is 5-0 in Detroit’s last five home games and 9-3-2 in the club’s last 14 Stanley Cup finals games.

                      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston at Philadelphia (7:05 p.m. EDT). Red Sox left-hander Jon Lester (5-5, 5.09 ERA) goes against Phillies righty Joe Blanton (4-3, 5.46 ERA) in the opener of a weekend series. Lester flirted with a perfect game in his last start before settling for a two-hitter.

-Shin-Soo Choo, Indians, hit an RBI single that glanced off a gull and gave Cleveland a 4-3 win over Kansas City.

-Geoff Blum, Astros, singled down the right-field line in the 13th inning to lift Houston to a 2-1 win over the Chicago Cubs.

                        - Carlos Pena, Rays, hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs to help Tampa Bay beat the Los Angeles Angels 11-1.

-Rajai Davis, Athletics, singled to right in the bottom of the ninth and Oakland rallied from a late three-run deficit for a 4-3 victory over Minnesota.

                        ONE-RUN GAMES

Ten major league baseball games were decided by one run Thursday night, the most since a record 11 early in the 2001 season. Thursday night was the 10th time that many teams all won by the smallest possible margin. The record of 11 has happened twice - April 14, 2001 and July 4, 1918. Aug. 9, 2002 also had 10 teams winning by the minimum.

Thursday's one-run games were: St. Louis 6, Florida 5; Houston 2, the Chicago Cubs 1, in 13 innings; Colorado 5, Milwaukee 4; Arizona 2, San Francisco 1; Washington 3, Cincinnati 2; the Chicago White Sox 4, Detroit 3; Oakland 4, Minnesota 3; Cleveland 4, Kansas City 3, in 10 innings; Boston 4, N.Y. Yankees 3 and, in the night's only minimum score contest, Texas beat Toronto 1-0.

                        COSTLY MISTAKES

An error by Cody Ross in center field helped the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Florida Marlins 6-5 Thursday. Rick Ankiel led off the eighth with a single, Albert Pujols walked on a full count and Ryan Ludwick singled. The ball got under Ross' glove and went to the wall, letting Ankiel and Pujols score the tying runs. ... Cristian Guzman scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error by Cincinnati second baseman Brandon Phillips in the eighth inning, a mistake that could have been forced by Alberto Gonzalez's hard slide. With the bases loaded and one out, Ryan Zimmerman bounced a slow grounder to shortstop Alex Gonzalez, who flipped to Phillips. As Anderson Hernandez crossed the plate with the tying run, Phillips threw wildly to first, allowing Guzman to score.

                        WILDLIFE FINISH

In Cleveland's 4-3 win over Kansas City, Shin-Soo Choo's base hit bounced off a gull before center fielder Coco Crisp could get to it and rolled to the wall while Mark DeRosa scored from second without a throw to give the Cleveland Indians a 4-3 win over the Royals on Thursday night. Although DeRosa seemed likely to score even if Crisp had fielded the ball, it bounced up, hit the seabird and changed direction enough that Crisp had no play. The gull? It appeared fine, flopping around for a few seconds before finally flying off.

                        THAT'S EIGHT

Boston rallied to beat the New York Yankees 4-3 Thursday night, making the Red Sox 8-0 against their rivals for the first time since they opened the brand-new Fenway Park by winning the first 14 against the Highlanders in 1912. The teams don't meet again until Aug. 6.

                        ROCKIES ROAD

Colorado won its eighth straight game Thursday, beating Milwaukee 5-4. All the wins have come on the road. The Rockies completed a four-game sweep of St. Louis earlier this week.

                        UNSTOPPABLE BLUM

Geoff Blum delivered game-winning hits for the Astros on consecutive days, coming through on Thursday with a 13th-inning single to give Houston a 2-1 win over the Chicago Cubs. On Wednesday, Blum singled with the bases loaded in the ninth to lift Houston to another 2-1 victory over the Cubs.

                        SPEAKING

"My team always comes back. That's what's good about them.'' - Manager Charlie Manuel after the Phillies came back to beat the New York Mets in extra innings for the second night in a row, 6-3 Thursday night.

                          This Day in Baseball

On June 12 in Baseball History...

1939 - The greatest-ever gathering of members and future inductees of the Baseball Hall of Fame assembles in Cooperstown, N.Y., for the dedication of the museum: Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Walter Johnson, Grover Alexander, Nap Lajoie, George Sisler, Eddie Collins, Tris Speaker, Cy Young and Connie Mack accept their plaques.

1950 - Major League Baseball names Connie Mack as the Honorary A.L. Manager of the All-Star Game.

1961 - An ailing Bill Veeck sells his interest in the White Sox to Arthur Allyn, a minority partner. Allyn also buys Hank Greenberg's stock to acquire a controlling interest. Greenberg remains as General Manager.

1970 - Pittsburgh's Dock Ellis no-hits San Diego 2-0 in the first game of a doubleheader. Ellis walks eight and hits one and gets all his support on two Willie Stargell home runs.

1975 - Milwaukee defeats Oakland 9-7 to move within four games of first. Oakland's Billy Williams hits his 400th career home run, but is matched by Hank Aaron's first home run in Milwaukee since 1965.
