    Len's Top 5

Happy Wednesday everyone, here's my Top 5 for June 3, 2009 from Len Berman Sports.

    1. Quick Hits

The Penguins live. Pittsburgh beat Detroit 4-2, but they still trail 2 games to 1 in the Stanley Cup Final.
Maria Sharapova ousted at the French Open by Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia.
Misery for Cub Fans (they've certainly had practice.) Their latest loss was a beauty. They led Atlanta 5-0 in the 8th and lost 6-5 in 12.
Giants pitcher Randy Johnson goes for his 300th career win tonight in Washington.

    2. Free Pass

Here's how the Hall of Fame works for pitchers. 300 wins, you're in. The only 300 game winners not in Cooperstown aren't eligible yet. Roger Clemens, Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine. Of course drug allegations may derail Clemens. So if Randy Johnson wins his 300th tonight he'll make it, no matter what you think of him... as long as he stays clean. Sad that we always have to add that caveat.

    3. Facelift

Madison Square Garden is getting a complete makeover. Top to bottom. It'll cost more than $500 million. The plan is to have it done in time for the 2012-13 Knick and Ranger seasons. Even the ceiling is getting redone. They'll need to make it bigger to accommodate all those championship banners the Knicks are sure to win.

    4. Bye Bye Birdie

In a cricket match the other day in the UK, a pigeon met its untimely end when drilled by a throw from a fielder. Shades of Dave Winfield nailing a seagull in Toronto, or Randy Johnson pulverizing a bird during an exhibition game with his fastball. (Maybe it was his personality.) Anyway the TV commentators for the cricket match were solemn. "The pigeon is no more. Jacques Rudolph is the man with the pigeon's blood on his hands."
One viewer on YouTube was slightly less sensitive writing: "I hate f***ing pigeons, they're rats of the sky." Lovely.

    5. Free Speech

A Texas woman went to the Rangers/Yankees game in Arlington last week wearing a T-shirt that read: "Yankees Suck." A security guard asked her to turn the shirt inside out because the Rangers consider it profane. It seems she and her husband were attending the game on their 19th wedding anniversary, and the shirt was an anniversary gift from her husband Walter.
You're married 19 years and all you get is a crummy T-shirt? How about "Walter Sucks."

Today's Birthday: Tennis star Rafael Nadal. 23.
Bonus Birthdays: Actor Tony Curtis. 84. And Mr. Gong Show himself, Chuck Barris. 80.

Today In Sports: The New York Knickerbockers wear the first baseball uniforms. White shirts, blue trousers and a big straw hat. 1851.
Bonus Event: No joy in Mudville."Casey at the Bat" was first published in The San Francisco Examiner. 1888.
