Minnesota Twins at New York Yankees (-173, 10)

Mark Teixeira had a splendid first turn as the New York Yankees' designated hitter. He'll look for a encore Sunday while trying to continue his success against the Minnesota Twins.

The Yankees will also try for a season-high fifth straight win when they continue a four-game series with the visiting Twins.

After getting bumped on his left wrist during a play at first base Friday night, Teixeira was put at DH only after New York manager Joe Girardi made sure Alex Rodriguez could also play third. He missed three games earlier this season with an injury to the same wrist.

Teixeira responded with his best game for the Yankees (19-17), going 4-for-4 in Saturday's 6-4 victory in 11 innings. He finished a triple shy of the cycle and accounted for all of New York's runs in regulation with a season-high four RBIs, hitting a three-run homer in the third and a tying single in the eighth.

"I was just getting good pitches to hit," Teixeira said. "I got four good pitches to hit and I didn't miss them."

That set up Rodriguez to play the role of hero with a two-run homer in the 11th. It was the first hit at the new Yankee Stadium for the third baseman, who was playing in his second home game of the season following hip surgery and admission of performance-enhancing drug use.

"For me, I gave (the media) something to talk about and write about in the 11th inning and I didn't have to open my mouth," said Rodriguez, who is hitting .154 with two home runs since returning. "That's kind of the way I want things, you know. Stay out of my own way."

In his team's four consecutive wins, Teixeira is 9 for 16 (.563) with three doubles, a home run and seven RBIs, and has raised his batting average from .191 to .238. He has batted .369 in his career against the Twins - his best against an AL opponent - and has homered in four of the last six meetings.

Teixeira doubled and homered in his only career meeting with Sunday's scheduled starter for Minnesota (18-19), Kevin Slowey (5-1, 4.91 ERA).

    Pick: Over 10

New York Mets at San Francisco Giants (-102, 8.5)

The New York Mets found out Saturday that they'd be without the injured Carlos Delgado for a while, a loss that would seem to leave a big hole in the middle of their lineup.

The San Francisco Giants can attest New York will be just fine without him.

Led by their surging offense, the Mets will look to complete their first four-game sweep in San Francisco on Sunday night as they also try to win for the 12th time in 14 games.

Delgado hit .423 with a homer and seven RBIs as the Mets (21-15) averaged more than six runs during a seven-game winning streak from May 4-10, but the first baseman hasn't played since due to an impingement of his right hip.

On Saturday, the 36-year-old Delgado was placed on the disabled list retroactive to Monday, and he may remain there well longer than 15 days.

The Mets, though, have pushed ahead without Delgado by averaging 6.3 runs over their last six games. Carlos Beltran and David Wright had three RBIs apiece as New York won 9-6 on Saturday.

The Mets have never swept a four-game set in San Francisco, and this is their 19th series of at least four games in the Bay Area since 1962.

They'd feel better about their chances of doing it for the first time if Jose Reyes, who hasn't started a game in the series due to stiffness in his right calf, can return Sunday. He's day-to-day.

Even without Reyes' 11 stolen bases, New York has swiped 13 so far in the series.

"The key for us is to try and manufacture runs,'' manager Jerry Manuel said. "With the way we've been running, it creates a diversion for the opposition that they have to start paying attention to us a little bit."

Beltran and Wright have stolen seven bases while driving in 12 runs thus far in the series, but New York's offense has a better chance of continuing to click if Gary Sheffield can help make up for the loss of Delgado. The newest member of baseball's 500-home run club is 9 for 18 with a homer in four starts in the Mets' cleanup spot.

    Pick: New York -106

New York Mets at San Francisco Giants (-102, 8.5)

The Mets conclude a weekend visit to San Francisco when they take on the Giants under the ESPN Sunday night-lights.

New York has won the first three games of this four-game series, most recently a 9-6 victory Saturday afternoon. The Mets put up a total of 16 hits, four of which came from outfielder Carlos Beltran.

He is hitting over .460 BA for the series and leads the National League in batting, posting a .379 BA with six home runs and 28 RBI on the year.

New York will send Mike Pelfrey (4-0 4.89 ERA) to the mound against Matt Cain (3-1 3.00 ERA) in a matchup of promising young right-handers.

The king and his ailing court

Mets first baseman Carlos Delgado passed New York Yankees legend Mickey Mantle for 48th place all time on MLB’s RBI leader board last week. King Carlos has not played since May 11, out with a sore hip, and was put on the disabled list Saturday.

The main cause for concern with the Mets is the starting rotation. That’s because Mets starters other than Johan Santana had a recent stint where they combined for a 7.43 ERA and just four wins in 14 starts.

New York Manager Jerry Manuel let it be known that he was running out of patience.

"I'm at the bridge," he told reporters. "I'm not jumping. But if I'm at the bridge, I have to take some folks with me."

Jon Niese lasted two turns in the rotation as the replacement for Oliver Perez, who had a 9.97 ERA when he was demoted to the bullpen, before being placed on the DL with tendonitis in his right knee.

Niese allowed five runs on seven hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings against the Braves Wednesday afternoon before being optioned to Triple-A Buffalo. Meanwhile, Perez continues to work hard at regaining his confidence.

"I have to keep working to get back,” Perez told reporters. “The important thing is to bring my confidence back. I have to work on everything, because I haven't been throwing a lot of strikes."

      Toeing the rubber

Like other New York starters, Mike Pelfrey continues to struggle while looking to firmly establish himself as a permanent fixture in the starting rotation.

When Pelfrey struck out Atlanta’s Kelly Johnson to open Tuesday's game against the Braves, it was his first K since getting Washington's Nick Johnson back on April 25. Pelfrey’s 4-0 record this season belies the fact that he has issued 15 walks against only nine strikeouts on the year.

San Francisco’s Matt Cain has been steady at home where the Giants are 8-3 in his last eleven team starts. He has struggled during the month of May, going 7-12 in his career team starts, including 3-7 at AT&T Park.

      The history book says

The Mets had won five in a row against the Giants prior to the start of this series on Friday. They rolled to wins in the first three games of this four-game set, totaling 24 runs.

San Francisco has countered with combined 16 runs in those games, matching their average offensive output of just over five runs per game.

Sunday’s have been much to San Francisco’s liking where they are 10-3 the last thirteen games, whereas the Mets have struggled of late on Sundays, going 1-6 their last seven games.

Orlando Magic at Boston Celtics [TNT | 8:05 PM ET]

Magic: “His (Dwight Howard's) performance the other night was remarkable. His energy and intensity were off the charts,” Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy said. “His athleticism is so great when he’s playing that hard, it’s really, really difficult for people to keep up with him.” "It doesn’t worry me at all,” Orlando’s Rashard Lewis said of playing in a Game 7. “We were facing elimination the other night.” "You can’t think about the aura of Boston while you’re playing them,” Magic guard Rafer Alston said. "Just being dominant is going to be key for my team," said Dwight Howard.

The Under is 7-2 in the last 9 meetings.
The Magic are 4-14 ATS in the last 18 meetings in Boston.

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 90

Celtics (-2.5, O/U 186.5): The Celtics are in their second straight seven-gamer. “Game 7 is the ultimate players’ game. I’ve always thought that,” said Boston coach Doc Rivers, who feels their will and execution mean more than coaching tips. “If you need a rah-rah speech for Game 7, your team’s probably in a little trouble.” Boston is 17-3 in seventh games at home. The Magic and Celtics also split four games in the regular season. Rivers said he won’t change the way the Celtics defend Dwight Howard but they must do a better job of keeping dribblers from penetrating and drawing center Kendrick Perkins away from Howard to help out.

The Over is 25-8 in the Celtics' last 33 games as a home favorite.
The Celtics are 4-12 ATS in their last 16 Conference Semifinals games.

New York Mets at San Francisco Giants [ESPN | 8:05 PM ET]

Mets: New York, without Carlos Delgado, is averaging 6.3 runs over their last six games. The Mets have never swept a four-game set in San Francisco. Even without Jose Reyes' 11 stolen bases, New York has swiped 13 so far in the series. "The key for us is to try and manufacture runs," manager Jerry Manuel said. "With the way we've been running, it creates a diversion for the opposition that they have to start paying attention to us a little bit." In Mike Pelfrey's only career start against the Giants, he gave up three singles over seven innings in a 7-0 win at Shea Stadium on 7/8/08.

The Mets are 11-2 in their last 13 overall.
The Mets are 12-2 in the last 14 meetings.

1B Carlos Delgado (hip) is on the 15-day DL.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Giants (-110, O/U 8.5): San Francisco will try to avoid its first five-game skid at AT&T Park since June 3-15 of last season. Matt Cain (3-1, 3.00 ERA) was 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA in four April starts, but has gone 1-1 with a 4.26 ERA in his past three outings. The right-hander is 2-3 with a 5.23 ERA in five career starts against the Mets. He gave up five runs over five innings on 6/4/08 - including a two-run homer to Reyes - in a 5-3 home loss to New York. In their last seven games prior to last night, the Giants are batting .274 and scoring 5.7 runs per game.

The Giants are 10-30 in Cain's last 40 starts vs. a team with a winning record.

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                          Streaking

                          Trevor Cahill (Oakland Athletics)

Oakland starters Brett Anderson and Dallas Braden allowed 15 runs - nine earned - in 8 1-3 innings in the first two games against the Tigers. Rookie Trevor Cahill hopes to change that while looking for his third straight victory in his first appearance versus Detroit.

Cahill (2-2, 3.69) allowed two solo homers and seven hits in six innings of a 12-3 win over Kansas City on Tuesday. The 21-year-old right-hander has yielded four runs in 19 innings in three outings this month after going 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA in four April starts.

"I'm just getting more comfortable," Cahill told the Athletics' official Web site.

                          Roy Halladay (Toronto Blue Jays)

Toronto Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay has dominated opponents as he continues to get ahead in the count. Chicago White Sox right-hander Gavin Floyd has had a hard time finding the plate.

Halladay tries to win his fifth straight start and pick up his major league-best eighth victory Sunday afternoon as the AL East-leading Blue Jays look for their ninth consecutive home win over the slumping White Sox.

Battling former Blue Jay A.J. Burnett in his last start, Halladay (7-1, 2.95 ERA) threw a five hitter in Tuesday's 5-1 win over the New York Yankees.

"(Halladay) showed why he's the best around and why he's going to continue to be the best around," Yankees outfielder Johnny Damon said.

Halladay, tied with Kansas City right-hander Zack Greinke for the most wins in baseball, retired 17 in a row against New York at one point as he pounded the plate with first-pitch strikes to 24 of 30 hitters.

"I just tried to work ahead and stay down," Halladay told the Blue Jays' official Web site.

Halladay is 4-4 with a 3.44 ERA in 14 appearances against the White Sox (15-20). He last faced them April 26 in a 4-3 win in Chicago, striking out six over seven innings.

                          Slumping

                          Armando Galarraga (Detroit Tigers)

The Detroit Tigers appear back on track after a rough finish to their recent road trip. Armando Galarraga hopes to do the same and end the worst stretch of his brief career.

Galarraga looks to avoid a fourth straight loss Sunday as the AL Central-leading Tigers try to complete a three-game sweep of the Oakland Athletics at Comerica Park.

Detroit (19-16) won 9-1 on Saturday after rolling to a 14-1 victory in the series opener. Prior to this set, the Tigers were swept in a three-game series at Minnesota to conclude a 3-4 road trip.

"The good thing is that we are adding on runs,'' manager Jim Leyland said of the Tigers, who in this series have scored four fewer runs than during their entire swing. "Everyone relaxes more when you score some runs, and that makes it easier to add more of them.''

As the Tigers' lineup looks to continue thriving against Oakland pitching, Galarraga (3-3, 4.61 ERA) hopes facing a club that's hitting an AL-low .236 and has 11 hits in the set will help him turn things around.

                          Bronson Arroyo (Cincinnati Reds)

Arroyo (5-2, 7.02) gave up five runs and 10 hits - including three homers - in seven innings of a 13-5 win at Arizona on Monday. The right-hander has yielded 14 runs in eight innings spanning his last two starts.

"My ERA is up, and I've got more wins at this point than maybe any other year except 2006 (when he started 5-1 through seven starts)," Arroyo told the Reds' official Web site. "You take what they give you, and I'll keep taking wins."

Arroyo is 4-4 with a 3.97 ERA and has won two in a row against San Diego.

Chicago White Sox at Toronto (1:07 p.m. EDT). Toronto's Roy Halladay (7-1) attempts to take the major league lead in victories.

                            STARS

                            Saturday

-Nick Hundley, Padres, homered with two outs in the 16th inning to give San Diego a 6-5 victory against Cincinnati in the longest game of the season.

-Alex Rodriguez, Yankees, hit a two-run homer in the 11th inning to give New York a 6-4, come-from-behind win over the Twins.

-Mark Teixeira, Yankees, went 4 for 4 with a homer and four RBIs in a 6-4 victory over the Twins.

-Robert Ray, Blue Jays, allowed one unearned run and three hits in eight innings for his first big league win, 2-1 over the White Sox.

-Carlos Beltran, Mets, had a pair of doubles among his three hits and drove in three runs in a 9-6 victory over the Giants.

-Jeff Suppan, Brewers, scattered six hits over seven innings, outpitching Adam Wainwright in a 1-0 win over the Cardinals.

-Raul Ibanez, Phillies, hit three homers and drove in seven runs the Phillies' day-night doubleheader sweep of Washington, 8-5 and 7-5 in five innings.

-Alfonso Soriano, Cubs, had two hits and drove in Bobby Scales with the winning run in the ninth inning of a 5-4 victory over Houston.

-Rick Porcello, Tigers, allowed one run on three hits and two walks in six innings of a 9-1 win over the A's. The 20-year-old rookie is 3-0 with a 1.00 ERA in three May starts.

                            STILL GOING

The Padres and Reds played 16 innings, with San Diego winning the longest game of the year 6-5 on Nick Hundley's two-out home run. The marathon game came about a week less than one year after the same two teams went 18 innings in Petco Park.

                            A-PLUS AT-BAT

Alex Rodriguez belted a game-ending, two-run homer in the 11th inning, giving the Yankees a 6-4 win over Minnesota with his first hit at the new Yankee Stadium. A-Rod missed the first part of the season with a hip injury after admitting in spring training to using steroids when he played with the Texas Rangers.

                            WELL DONE

Randy Wells has filled in admirably for Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano, who's on the DL with a strained hamstring. Wells got another no-decision after six scoreless innings in a 5-4 win over Houston. The 26-year-old right-hander allowed five hits and struck out five in five scoreless innings on May 8, when the Cubs lost 3-2 to Milwaukee. His streak of 15 1-3 scoreless innings is the longest to start a Cubs career since Jose Guzman threw 17 1-3 scoreless in 1993.

                            LACK-LUSTER RETURN

Angels starter John Lackey's season debut lasted only two pitches. He was ejected after hitting Texas leadoff hitter Ian Kinsler in his first start since coming off the disabled list, a 5-3 loss to the Rangers. Lackey's first pitch went behind the head of Kinsler and the next hit him in the side. Plate umpire Bob Davidson, without a warning, immediately ejected Lackey.

                            BIG BENCHWARMER

Boston manager Terry Francona said before Saturday's game in Seattle that David Ortiz would not start the final two games of Boston's road trip. The five-time All-Star went 0-for-7 and stranded 12 base runners - tying a team record - in an extra-inning loss to the Angels on Thursday. He didn't play Friday and is hitting .208 without a homer in 144 at-bats.

                            RUNNIN' RAYS

Gabe Gross and Akinori Iwamura pulled off a double steal in the fifth inning of a 4-2 win over the Indians, giving Tampa Bay at least one stolen base in 18 straight games. It's the longest stretch in the AL since the New York Yankees had a 19-game run in 1914.

                            NUMBER CRUNCHING

Johan Santana allowed 11 hits for only the second time in his career in the Mets' 9-6 win over the Giants. ... Left-handers are hitting .476 against Rays closer Troy Percival this season. ... Juan Pierre had three hits to raise his average to .406 since taking over for Manny Ramirez in the Dodgers' outfield. ... The Royals, who have lost eight of nine, have scored three runs or fewer in 17 of 37 games. ... Detroit has outscored Oakland 23-2 in the first two games of their weekend set.

                            POMPOM PARTY

Pompom giveaway night at the Marlins' game against the Dodgers turned into a distraction when countless silvery strands flew onto the diamond. Left field was almost covered by the sixth inning, prompting Florida outfielder Dan Uggla to say: "Who wants to be playing baseball when there are streamers everywhere? It wasn't funny. It wasn't fun. It was brutal.''

                            DINGED UP

Carlos Delgado was placed on the 15-day DL with an impingement of his right hip, and Mets manager Jerry Manuel says the slugger could need surgery. ... Rangers closer Frank Francisco was put on the 15-day DL with right biceps tendinitis. ... The Orioles placed outfielder Luke Scott on the 15-day DL with a strained left shoulder. ...

                            SPEAKING

"I was so tired. I haven't played a lot of baseball this year so I was exhausted. I was really just trying to put a good swing on the ball.'' - Alex Rodriguez, whose first hit in the new Yankee Stadium was the deciding two-run homer in the 11th inning of a 6-4 win over the Twins.

                              NBA playoffs

Orlando is better team than Boston, but do they believe they can win on road in Game 7? Celtics had 22 turnovers in Game 6, but Magic missed 14 foul shots (Howard was 5-12), so that could be problem late in game. Boston has to find way to get Allen (2-11 in Game 6) going- their last two series wins are by 1-4 points. Magic shot only 36.6% from floor in Game 6, but got to foul line 18 more times than Boston, which won't be happening in Beantown.

Lakers lost last two games in Houston, but beat Rockets by 40 last game in Staples; they need some of their complimentary guys to step up- you take out Kobe-Gasol-Farmar from Game 6, and LA was 7-32 from floor. Lakers' series wins are by 13-14-40, but since Rockets have won game in series on this court, have to respect them here, despite they're without Yao/McGrady here. Houston only played seven guys 5:00+ in Game 6.

Detroit just survived 7-game series with Anaheim, where they won three of four at home (5-1 overall in the playoffs at home). Blackhawks are 3-3 on road in playoffs, winning two of three in Vancouver last round- they scored 11 goals in last two games, going 3-4 on power play in just 3:38 while man up in decisive 6th game.
