    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, May 17

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The NBA ends the second round of its playoffs, the NHL starts its third round, and the Mets and Giants finish their series.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The Lakers and the Celtics will both be trying to avoid playoff disasters on Sunday when they take to the court at home in the deciding game of their series.

Los Angeles and Houston will get things started at 3:30pm ET, with the Rockets coming off a 95-80 home win in Game 6 on Thursday night. Aaron Brooks led the way with 26 points for Houston in that victory, while Luis Scola tossed in 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Kobe Bryant had a game-high 32 points in the defeat for the Lakers, who have been pegged as big 12.5-point favorites Sunday.

At 8:00pm ET the second round of the NBA playoffs will then conclude with the Celtics playing host to the Magic. Underdog Orlando got 23 points and 22 boards from Dwight Howard in Game 6 on Thursday night in an 83-75 home win, which tied up the series 3-3. Rashard Lewis had 20 points in that contest. Rajon Rondo had 19 points in the loss for the Celtics, who are slim 2.5-point faves for Sunday.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Baseball's primetime matchup on Sunday has the Mets finishing off their series in San Francisco. New York's probable starter for the matchup is undefeated righthander Mike Pelfrey, who sits at 4-0 with a 4.89 ERA on the season. Pelfrey took a no-decision vs. the Braves last time out. The Giants will counter Pelfrey with righthander Matt Cain, who boasts a 3-1 record and an ERA of 3.00 in 2009.

Also on the National League schedule for Sunday: the Dodgers at Florida, Colorado at Pittsburgh, Philadelphia at Washington, Milwaukee at St. Louis, Houston at the Cubs, Cincinnati at San Diego, and Arizona at Atlanta. Braves righthanded starter Derek Lowe is 5-1 with a 3.80 ERA through his eight outings.

The top pitcher on tap in the AL on Sunday is Blue Jays ace righthander Roy Halladay, who is 7-1 with a 2.95 ERA. Halladay will take the mound at home against the ChiSox and righthander Gavin Floyd (2-3, 7.32 ERA). Rounding out the AL slate: Oakland at Detroit, Minnesota at the Yankees, Cleveland at Tampa Bay, the Angels at Texas, Baltimore at Kansas City, and finally Boston at Seattle.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The NHL's Western Conference final gets underway on Sunday afternoon, with Detroit playing host to division-rival Chicago. The Red Wings finally dispatched the Ducks on Thursday, getting the game-winning goal from Dan Cleary in a 4-3 Game 7 victory. The Blackhawks got past the Canucks in their second-round set earlier in the week, riding a Patrick Kane hat trick to a 7-5 win in the clincher. Oddsmakers have the Red Wings pegged as the -180 home favorites for Sunday.

      Six-pack for Sunday

-- Out at Petco late Saturday night, Padre catcher Hundley homered at 3:20am ET, giving San Diego a 6-5 win in 16 innings. Reds also lost Votto (dizzy spells), Volquez (back spasms) during game.

-- Phillies swept twinbill from Nationals, scoring 15 runs in only 14 innings, as second game was shortened by a monsoon.

-- Cubs blew 4-0 lead in ninth, but won 5-4 in bottom of the ninth. Rookie Wells hasn't allowed a run in his first two Chicago starts.

-- Detroit won its first games against A's this weekend, 14-1/9-1.

-- Don't look now, but Rangers have a 3.5-game lead over Angels in AL West, 5.5 over Seattle, 7.5 over Oakland.

-- John Lackey's return from injury lasted two pitches, after umpire tossed him for throwing at Kinsler, who homered twice on Friday. First pitch went over Kinsler's head, second pitch drilled him.

Sunday's List of 13: Things I would change, if I could......

In a perfect world, where I made all the decisions, here are some of changes I'd like to make in sports (none of these will ever happen).

      13) I'd get rid of the designated hitter; I think if players voted, they'd get rid of the DH too. there are 750 players in major leagues (25 on a team and 30 teams) and with 11-12 pitchers on all the teams, thats 330-360 automatic votes right there. What pitcher in his right mind would vote to keep the DH?

      12) NFL would buy the Arena League and use it as its developmental league for QBs; its already fairly-well established, and the nature of the game (faster decisions) make it ideal for improving QB play.

      11) Institute a college football playoff, which would make schedule strength a key component, which would eliminate games against the I-AA cupcake teams. Teams could afford to lose a game, so they'd play better teams to improve their schedule strength and Saturdays in September/October would become even better.

      10) Since the NBA is so obsessed with Europe, I'd make it so NBA went by International Rules, which means shorter 3-point distance, any defense is legal, and so is offensive goaltending. The NBA game isn't as much fun to watch as college/international play, even though they have most of the best players. Go figure.

      9) I'd have a PGA tournament where the players had to carry their own clubs. Lets see how big those golf bags would be then.

      8) I'd like to see some Japanese baseball games on TV; if a guy like Akinori Iwamura hits 30 homers a year in Japan but is hard-pressed to hit five here, then just how good is that league over there? I'd like to find out-- the MLB Network should do this......

      7) Take the radio equipment out of NFL players' helmets, its stupid. Sonny Jurgensen, Dan Fouts, Joe Namath, Bobby Layne didn't have radios in their helmets, it makes the game more robotic. Get rid of it.

      6) I'd like to see regulation of prices at concession stands at stadiums; a 16-ounce beer in the Bronx is $9, Cracker Jack is $5.75. Same as the movie theaters and gas stations, people cheat you when they can.

      5) Baseball managers, coaches shouldn't wear uniforms-- players wear uniforms. Coaches should never be between the white lines, ever. If you need to make a pitching change, just sub in/sub out like they do in basketball. Arguing with umpires simply is never allowed.

      4) I'd put more NHL teams back in Canada, where the game is a hell of a lot more popular than it is in Phoenix, Atlanta and Nashville. If this guy Balsillie is so hell-bent on owning an NHL team, why don't the powers-that-be want him? Help me with an answer, Canada.....

      3) I'd have a PGA tournament on a course with no par-5's; those are the easiest holes for pros, so why have them? Make courses harder, which means shorter and tighter, not longer.

      2) No more primetime NFL games in cold weather cities late in the season; does anyone care about the fans who pay for the tickets?

      1) Lastly, and this would be great, geographic realignment of the big leagues. If baseball won't have a salary cap (which they should but never will), then at least make the money teams play each other lot more. How about 18 Bronx-Met games, instead of the Bronx-Oriole games-- wouldn't that be a hell of a lot more fun?

Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA best bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Orlando Magic at Boston Celtics (-2.5, 186)

The Boston Celtics are exactly where they want to be for Game 7 - home. Now they must keep Dwight Howard from getting to his favorite spots, right near the basket.

Defense will mean more than decibel level when the defending NBA champions try to control the Orlando Magic's powerful center Sunday night.

The winner faces a huge challenge in the Eastern Conference finals - LeBron James and his playoff-perfect Cleveland Cavaliers, who swept their first two series.

The Celtics are in their second straight seven-gamer. They beat Chicago in the first series and bobbled themselves into the Game 7 against Orlando by blowing a 10-point, third-quarter lead and losing 83-75. Howard had 23 points and 22 rebounds Thursday night.

''Game 7 is the ultimate players' game. I've always thought that,'' said Boston coach Doc Rivers, who feels their will and execution mean more than coaching tips. ''If you need a rah-rah speech for Game 7, your team's probably in a little trouble.''

So he plans to forego any inspirational pre-game words. The fans will be loud enough.

But the Celtics don't want to hear about home-court advantage.

''You can't go into any situation thinking that you're comfortable at home,'' Ray Allen said. ''You've got to play basketball and it starts with not getting too comfortable at home.''

The Celtics beat Atlanta and Cleveland at home in Game 7 of the first two rounds last year. They did it again against the Bulls, a series in which four games reached overtime.

They're 17-3 in seventh games at home.

                Pick: Boston -2.5

Houston Rockets at Los Angeles Lakers (-12.5, 194)

The Western Conference semifinals between the Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets appears to come down to a simple question.

Which Lakers team will show up for the decisive Game 7?

The one that blew out the undermanned Rockets by 40 points in Game 5 to set up what most everyone thought would be the clinching game? Or the one that quickly fell behind by double digits two nights later and lost by 15?

The Lakers, it seems, will be the ones who determine whether Sunday's matinee at Staples Center is a feel-good story or a horror show.

The winner of this physical, sometimes-testy series will advance to the conference finals to face the Denver Nuggets, who've been resting since eliminating Dallas on Wednesday night.

Kobe Bryant admits it's a mystery why the Lakers have been so wildly inconsistent against a team few expected would reach the second round, let alone push the top seed in the West to a Game 7.

''Yeah, that's the million-dollar question,'' Bryant said Saturday. ''There's a bunch of other teams in the past that went through the same thing for whatever reason. It's just the emotions of an NBA season, I guess.''

Bryant expects to see ''the team that won all those games this year. We're continuing to evolve, too.

''I think the second half of that game in Houston we picked up our defensive intensity and saw kind of what we're capable of by playing as hard as we did on the defensive end,'' Bryant said. ''Hopefully we'll get off to a hot start.''

                Pick: Los Angeles -12.5

Chicago Blackhawks at Detroit Red Wings (-180, 5.5)

Chicago forward Patrick Kane knows it will be difficult to make dazzling plays with the puck dancing on both sides of his stick against Detroit.

The Red Wings' defense is led by six-time Norris Trophy winner Nicklas Lidstrom, who taught Kane a thing or two early in his career.

''I remember I had a shift where I was coming down, tried to chip it by him, he knocked it out the air,'' Kane recalled. ''I got the puck the same shift again, tried to chip it by him again, he knocked it out of the air again.''

While experience is clearly on the Red Wings' side, they're not the only team that likes its chances in the Western Conference finals.

''There's an honor to play against a team like that and hopefully be the team that knocks them off,'' Toews said. ''It's a huge challenge and a huge opportunity that we're excited about.

''In a lot of ways, pressure is on them. We're just going to go out there and play and have fun and let loose.''

                          Pick: Under 5.5
