      Ice Picks: NHL best bets
      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anaheim Ducks at Detroit Red Wings (-260, 5.5)

For a team heading into a Game 7 showdown with the defending Stanley Cup champions in Hockey Town USA, the Anaheim Ducks are pretty happy-go-lucky.

"What a great thrill to be playing a great hockey club like that in a Game 7 in the Stanley Cup playoffs," defenseman Scott Niedermayer told the Los Angeles Times. "I'm looking forward to it."

Maybe, it’s the fact that Niedermayer and his blueline buddies handled the Red Wings forwards in Anaheim’s 2-1 Game 6 victory Tuesday night. The Ducks defense held Detroit to just eight shots in the opening period and allowed a lone power-play goal in the third period.

Ducks coach Randy Carlyle shuffled his defensive pairings in hopes of matching up with the Red Wings' top lines more efficiently. He sent the veteran combo of Niedermayer and Chris Pronger out against Detroit’s trio of Johan Franzen, Valtteri Filppula and Marian Hossa. Second-line defensemen Francois Beauchemin and James Wisniewski were assigned to Henrik Zetterberg, Tomas Holmstrom and Pavel Datsyuk.

When Detroit did turn up the intensity in the final frame, outshooting Anaheim 18-6, goaltender Jonas Hiller was there like he’s been all series. He turned away 38 shots in total and dropped his postseason numbers to 2.09 GAA and a .946 save percentage.

Tuesday’s final played under the posted total for the second straight game and fourth time this series.

      Pick: Under 5.5

Carolina Hurricanes at Boston Bruins (-220, 5)

The Boston Bruins have swung the momentum in their second round series with the Carolina Hurricanes, but they still have a long way to go before Game 7 Thursday. Boston, which has climbed out of a 3-1 series hole, pulled out a 4-2 win in Game 6 despite some sloppy play and poor discipline.

"Now we're rolling along. Confidence is high. We know we need to battle every shift. It's not over yet. We need to play hard in Game 7,” forward Byron Bitz told the Boston Globe.

The Bruins offense was back on track, scoring eight goals in the past two games after netting just three in their three straight losses last week. While the Bruins notched a couple pretty goals, they did have some ugly moments Tuesday including two careless penalties in the third period.

Luckily, Boston’s penalty kill has been drum tight in the past two games, erasing all eight of Carolina’s man-advantages. For the playoffs, the Bruins boast an 88 percent penalty kill unit and haven’t given up a power-play goal in 10 chances at home.

Limiting its errors as well as home ice, where it is 9-4 all-time in Game 7 situations, will help Boston avoid dropping its third straight Game 7 showdown.

      Pick: Boston -220

New York Mets at San Francisco Giants [10:15 PM ET]

Mets (-130, O/U 9): John Maine tries to win his fourth straight start as the Mets begin a 10-game road trip. Maine (3-2, 4.54 ERA), who has gone six innings in each of his last three starts, looks to give the Mets' bullpen a much-needed break after seven relievers pitched 7 1-3 innings Wednesday. "It's just three good starts in a row, and next time hopefully I'll lower the pitches a little bit and get to the seventh," said Maine, who has a 2.00 ERA during his winning streak. He's 1-0 with a 3.78 ERA in three career starts versus San Francisco. The Mets won the final five meetings with the Giants last season.

The Mets are 8-2 in their last 10 overall.
The Mets are 6-1 in their last 7 during game 1 of a series.

Key Injuries - 1B Carlos Delgado (hip) is OUT.

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Giants: In Saturday's 8-0 loss to Los Angeles, Jonathan Sanchez (1-3, 4.78) walked four and matched a season high with five runs allowed. He has not reached the sixth inning in his last three starts. "I'm not getting my job done," Sanchez said. The left-hander, though, is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in two home starts this season. He's 0-3 with an 8.59 ERA on the road. Sanchez is 1-1 with a 4.09 ERA in two career starts versus the Mets. In his only home start against the Mets (6/2/08), Sanchez allowed just two runs and six hits over seven innings. San Francisco has won 12 of 17 at AT&T Park this season.

The Giants are 0-6 in Sanchez's last 6 starts vs. a team with a winning record.
The Giants are 3-14 in Sanchez's last 17 starts.

Key Injuries - OF Fred Lewis (toe) is QUESTIONABLE.

PROJECTED SCORE: 3 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Houston Astros at Colorado Rockies (+100, 10)

Inconsistent performances plagued Wandy Rodriguez in his first four major league seasons. He appears to have solved those issues in 2009, becoming the Houston Astros' most reliable starter.

Coming off his longest outing of the season, Rodriguez looks for his third consecutive win as the Astros face the Colorado Rockies in the finale of their three-game road set on Thursday.

Rodriguez (3-2, 1.80 ERA) went 37-40 with a 4.79 ERA in 111 games over the last four years, including a 15-22 mark and 5.61 ERA in 54 games - 47 starts - on the road.

This season, the left-hander finally appears to be establishing himself as a consistent force, allowing one run or less in five of his seven starts while posting the third-best ERA in baseball. He also leads Houston (15-18) with 37 strikeouts in 45 innings and has not given up a homer.

Rodriguez was outstanding again on Friday, scattering five hits with seven strikeouts in a season-high eight innings while retiring 16 in a row at one point in a 2-0 win over San Diego.

Rodriguez is 2-0 with a 1.06 ERA in his last four starts against the Rockies (13-19).

He'll try to help Houston build on Wednesday's 15-11 win over Colorado, during which the Astros collected 24 hits - one shy of the club record reached twice in 1976.

The Astros weren't as productive at the plate in Tuesday's series opener, getting eight hits in a 12-1 loss.

The Rockies will give Jason Hammel (0-1, 5.40) his first start against Houston as he looks to rebound from one of his worst performances of the season.

The right-hander gave up six runs and eight hits in 4 1-3 innings of an 8-3 loss to Florida on Friday. That performance came five days after he scattered six hits in six scoreless innings of a 1-0, 10-inning defeat at San Francisco.

The Rockies could be without Troy Tulowitzki after he was forced to leave Wednesday's contest in the seventh inning due to a contusion on his left elbow from being hit by a pitch. The shortstop is expected to be evaluated Thursday.

                    Pick: Astros

Baltimore Orioles at Kansas City Royals (-132, 9)

The Royals look to get their offense back in gear and win their seventh consecutive home game for the first time in six years Thursday night when they open a four-game series against the Baltimore Orioles.

Kansas City (18-16) came to the West Coast last week atop the AL Central, but left losers of five in a row. The Royals fell at Oakland 7-2 on Wednesday to drop back-to-back games to the Athletics after losing three straight to the Los Angeles Angels.

Kansas City's sputtering offense was the biggest reason for the winless trip. The Royals were limited to just four hits Wednesday and scored nine total runs while batting .201 in the five losses.

Kansas City, which opens a seven-game homestand Thursday, has scored 42 runs while batting .329 during its six-game home winning streak. The Royals haven't won seven straight in Kansas City since winning their first 11 there in 2003.

Kansas City hasn't had much success against the Orioles (14-20) at Kauffman lately, though. The Royals went 1-3 at home against Baltimore last season and have dropped 14 of the last 17 meetings in Kansas City.

Gil Meche (2-3, 4.97 ERA) also hasn't much success against Baltimore lately.

Meche, who takes the ball Thursday, is 0-6 with a 3.65 ERA in eight starts against the Orioles since defeating them on July 17, 2005, when he pitched for Seattle. In two starts against Baltimore last season, the right-hander was tagged for 10 runs in 11 innings.

In Wednesday's 8-6 loss to Tampa Bay, Orioles center fielder Adam Jones left in the fourth inning with a mild right hamstring strain. He appeared to hurt his leg running out an infield single in the second, but remained in the game.

"Hopefully, I can come back tomorrow, but I'd say (I'll miss) a couple of days," Jones said.

If he's lost for significant time that could spell trouble for Baltimore's offense. Jones leads the Orioles in batting average (.370) and home runs (eight) and is 9 for 16 with three homers and seven RBIs in his last four games.

                    Pick: Under

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                      Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      Streaking

                      Justin Verlander (Detroit Tigers)

Justin Verlander had to have bought Curtis Granderson a beer or two after the outfielder made what could be the catch of the year to preserve the pitcher’s complete-game shutout last Friday. Verlander allowed just two hits and struck out 11 batters in the 1-0 win over the Cleveland Indians.

"It was out of the park and he brought it back," the left hander said of Granderson’s grab. "I felt like I did everything I could to help my team win, but some things are out of my control."

Verlander is doing his fair share for the Tigers. Including Friday’s game, he is 3-0 in his last three starts and has given up just one run in 23 innings of work. Verlander has 31 strikeouts in this span and only five base-on-balls. His fast ball is hitting the high 90’s and got faster the deeper he went against the Tribe.

                      Wandy Rodriguez (Houston Astros)

Despite posting the third-best ERA in the National League, Houston Astros lefty Wandy Rodriguez has just a 3-2 record to show for it. Now, with the Astros lineup finally giving him some support on the scoreboard, Rodriguez is undefeated in his last three starts.

The south-paw pitcher has gone 20 innings during that stretch, allowing only four runs on 16 hits. Houston’s bats have provided 17 total runs over those three games. However, in his most recent appearance, Rodriguez had to tow the load himself. He went eight innings of shutout baseball, striking out seven batters in a 2-0 victory over the San Diego Padres.

"He looked like he was totally in command," Astros manager Cecil Cooper told reporters. "His curveball was pretty good. He didn't have a whole lot of deep counts. I thought Wandy was efficient with his pitches and that's what you have to do to stay deep in ballgames."

                      Slumping

                      Felix Hernandez (Seattle Mariners)

Felix Hernandez must have an awful crick in his neck after watching four home runs soar overhead in his last 10 innings of work.

After starting the season with a bang, the Mariners ace has imploded in his past two starts. He’s allowed 11 earned runs off 12 hits during this span. Most recently, he posted as many home runs allowed as strikeouts (two) in a 9-6 loss to the Minnesota Twins Saturday.

Seattle manager Don Wakamatsu told reporters that Hernandez was “dragging his arm” and pulled the right hander after just four innings of work this weekend. He said he was concerned about Hernandez’s arm but both manager and pitcher deny anything is actually wrong health wise.

"Felix -- talking to him today, there were no repercussions from yesterday," Wakamatsu told the media Sunday. "We just felt that, again, his mechanics were little bit out of whack and he just tried to do too much."

                      Jonathan Sanchez (San Francisco Giants)

The answer to Jonathan Sanchez’s recent struggles could be as simple as venue.

The Giants left-handed hurler has surrendered nine earned runs in his past two games, giving up 11 hits and walking 10 batters in just nine innings on the mound. However, those starts came on the road where Sanchez is 0-3 with an ERA just under 9.00.

Now, San Francisco comes home to AT&T Park where Sanchez is 1-0 and has yet to yield an earned run in over 11 innings pitched. In his recent home start, a 5-3 loss to the Dodgers, Sanchez was tagged with two unearned runs while giving up just three hits.

                        SCOREBOARD

                        Thursday, May 14

Los Angeles Dodgers at Philadelphia (1:05 p.m. EDT). The Dodgers send Chad Billingsley (5-1, 2.45 ERA) to the mound to face the Phillies and Cole Hamels (1-2, 6.17), who is coming off his first win since the World Series.

                        STARS

                        Wednesday

-Alfonso Soriano, Cubs, hit his 53rd leadoff homer in Chicago's 6-4, rain-shortened win against San Diego, tying Craig Biggio for second on baseball's career list and setting a club record.

-Lance Berkman, Astros, went 4 for 4 with two RBIs to help Houston beat Colorado 15-11.

-Hank Blalock, Rangers, hit a two-run double in the 11th inning to give Texas a 6-5 victory over Seattle.

-Adrian Gonzalez, Padres, homered twice in San Diego's 6-4 loss to the Chicago Cubs in a game shortened by rain.

-Brandon Phillips, Reds, drove in four runs and Cincinnati beat the Diamondbacks 10-3 to complete a three-game sweep in Arizona.

-Jack Cust, Athletics, had four RBIs to lead Oakland to a 7-2 win over Kansas City.

-Joe Crede, Twins, hit a game-ending grand slam in the 13th inning as Minnesota beat Detroit 14-10.

-Brett Gardner, Yankees, hit his first major league homer and drove in three runs to lead New York to an 8-2 win over Toronto.

-Shairon Martis, Nationals, allowed one run and two hits over seven sharp innings in Washington's 6-3 victory over San Francisco.

-Martin Prado, Braves, homered in the 12th inning to lead Atlanta to an 8-7 win against the New York Mets 8-7.

-James Loney, Dodgers, homered and drove in four runs as Los Angeles beat the Phillies 9-2 in Philadelphia.

-Rickie Weeks, Brewers, homered for the third straight game and Milwaukee beat Florida 8-6.

-Matt Palmer, Angels, overcame a shaky start to record his first career complete game, tossing a five-hitter in Los Angeles' 8-4 victory over Boston.

                        HOLD UP!

Soon after Adam LaRoche became the first player to have a home run taken away following a video replay review, Ross Gload lost one the same way Wednesday night when umpires reversed their call. LaRoche wound up with a double for Pittsburgh at PNC Park. Gload's pinch-hit drive was finally called foul at Milwaukee and he eventually struck out. Both players had already rounded the bases when umps changed the original call.

                        ALL'S WELL THAT ENDS WELL

Ryan Zimmerman's 30-game hitting streak ended when he went 0 for 3 with two walks in the Washington Nationals' 6-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants. Zimmerman never got the ball out of the infield, falling just short of tying Vladimir Guerrero's franchise-record streak of 31 games for the Montreal Expos in 1999.

                        BEAUTIF-LEE DONE

Cliff Lee outpitched Mark Buehrle, throwing seven innings in the Cleveland Indians' 4-0 win over the Chicago White Sox. Lee (2-5) hadn't won since April 16 at New York. The AL Cy Young Award winner struck out a season-high nine while working out of two bases-loaded jams. He has pitched 20 consecutive scoreless innings against the White Sox since July 1 last year.

AND THE HITS JUST KEEP ON COMING

Lance Berkman went 4 for 4 and the Houston Astros finished with 24 hits in a 15-11 victory over the Colorado Rockies. Berkman drove in two runs and scored three times for the Astros, who were one hit shy of their franchise record for a nine-inning game set during the second matchup in a doubleheader against Atlanta on May 30, 1976.

                        HE'S BACK

Dontrelle Willis gave up four runs, eight hits and two walks over 4 2-3 innings in his first start of the season for Detroit, which lost 14-10 to the Minnesota Twins in 13 innings. It was a decent start considering all he's come back from. He was sent to Class A last year to work on his control, and he had been on the disabled list this spring due to an anxiety disorder.

                        SPEAKING

"We're a team that's very hungry, very young. We're going out there and just playing Reds baseball the best way we know how. That's all we're really doing. We're just out there playing the game the right way.'' - Cincinnati second baseman Brandon Phillips after the Reds beat Arizona 10-3 to complete a three-game sweep and improve to a major league-best 13-5 on the road.

                        SEASONS

                        May 14

1913 - Washington's Walter Johnson gave up a run in the fourth inning against the St. Louis Browns to end his streak of 56 scoreless innings. The Senators won 10-5.

1914 - Jim Scott of the Chicago White Sox pitched nine innings of no-hit ball against the Washington Senators, but lost 1-0 after giving up two hits in the 10th inning.

1920 - Walter Johnson of the Washington Senators recorded his 300th victory with a 9-8 win over the Detroit Tigers.

1927 - Chicago pitcher Guy Bush went the distance for the Cubs in a 7-2 18-inning win over Boston. Charlie Robertson of the Braves almost matched the feat, leaving with one out in the 18th.

1950 - Pittsburgh first baseman Johnny Hopp hit two home runs and four singles in six at-bats, leading the Pirates to a 16-9 victory over the Cubs in the second game of a doubleheader at Chicago.

1965 - Carl Yastrzemski of Boston hit for the cycle and added another home run for five RBIs in a 12-8 10-inning loss to the Detroit Tigers.

1967 - Mickey Mantle's 500th home run, off Stu Miller, lifted the New York Yankees to a 6-5 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.

1972 - In his first game with the New York Mets, Willie Mays hit a fifth inning home run off Don Carrithers for the difference in a 5-4 triumph over the San Francisco Giants.

1977 - Jim Colborn of the Kansas City Royals no-hit the Texas Rangers for a 6-0 victory.

1988 - Jose Oquendo became the first non-pitcher in 20 seasons to get a decision, taking the loss in the 19th inning when Ken Griffey's two-out, two-run double led the Atlanta Braves over the St. Louis Cardinals 7-5.

1989 - Benny Distefano became the first left-handed catcher in a major league game in nine years when he caught the ninth inning of the Pittsburgh Pirates' 5-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves. Mike Squires caught two games with the Chicago White Sox in 1980 and Dale Long caught two games for the Chicago Cubs in 1958.

1993 - Jay Gainer of the Colorado Rockies hit a home run on the first major league pitch he saw. The first baseman became the fifth National Leaguer and 12th major leaguer to accomplish this feat. The Cincinnati Reds beat the Rockies 13-5.

1996 - Dwight Gooden pitched a no-hitter as the New York Yankees beat the Seattle Mariners 2-0. Gooden struck out five and walked six.

Today's birthdays: Luke Gregerson 25; Roy Halladay 32; Tony Perez 67.
