    Daily Sports Roundup

    Thursday, May 14

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The NBA and NHL will continue the second rounds of their playoffs, and the PGA Tour will hit the links in San Antonio.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The Celtics can eliminate the Magic on Thursday night when those teams meet in Orlando for Game 6 of their second-round series. Boston rallied in the fourth quarter for a 92-88 home win in Game 5 on Tuesday, which gave them a 3-2 lead in the series. Glen Davis had a team-high 22 points in that win for the Celtics, and Paul Pierce had 19 points. Rashard Lewis led the Magic's attack with 19 points in the defeat, and Dwight Howard had 12 points and 17 rebounds.

The Lakers can punch their ticket to the third round on Thursday night as well when they play on the road in Houston. Los Angeles got 26 points from Kobe Bryant on Tuesday night in a 118-78 home romp over the Rockets, which gave the Lakers a 3-2 series advantage. Pau Gasol contributed 16 points and 13 boards for Los Angeles in the win, and Andrew Bynum tossed in 14 points. Aaron Brooks had 14 points in the loss for the Rockets, and Ron Artest had nine points.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The Dodgers will go with Chad Billingsley on Thursday afternoon as they finish off a road series in Philadelphia. Righthander Billingsley is 5-1 with a 2.45 ERA on the season, but he's coming off his first loss of the year (three runs over seven innings vs. the Giants). The Phillies will counter with Cole Hamels on Thursday; the ace lefthander is just 1-2 with a 6.17 ERA through his five outings.

There are just five other games on the National League schedule for Thursday, with San Diego at the Cubs, Houston at Colorado, St. Louis at Pittsburgh, Florida at Milwaukee, and the Mets at San Francisco. New York probable starter John Maine is 3-2 with a 4.54 ERA on the season, and he's won his last three outings.

The American League also offers up a half-dozen games on Thursday, with Detroit at Minnesota, Seattle at Texas, Boston at the Angels, Cleveland at Tampa Bay, Baltimore at Kansas City, and the Yankees at Toronto. CC Sabathia (2-3, 3.94 ERA) is slated to take the mound for New York against the Blue Jays; Sabathia tossed a complete-game shutout vs. the Orioles in his last mound trip.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The Bruins will try to complete the comeback on Thursday night as they host the Hurricanes in the seventh and deciding game of their second-round playoff series. Boston doubled up on Carolina 4-2 on Tuesday night to tie up the series 3-3 and force Thursday's Game 7. Marc Savard, Mark Recchi, Chuck Kobasew, and Steve Montador all scored for the Bruins in that victory, while Tim Thomas made 31 saves. Cam Ward stopped just 15 of 19 Boston shots in a losing cause.

The Ducks also managed to force a Game 7 in their series with the favored Red Wings, with that matchup taking place on Thursday night as well. Ryan Getzlaf picked up a goal and an assist on Tuesday night in Anaheim's 2-1 home victory, which tied up the series 3-3. Corey Perry had the game-winning marker for the Ducks, and Jonas Hiller stopped 38 of 39 Detroit shots. Johan Franzen had the Detroit tally in the third period, while Chris Osgood had 26 saves in the contest.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, Zach Johnson is pegged as the 10/1 Vegas favorite to win the PGA Tour's stop this week, the Valero Texas Open in San Antonio. Johnson grabbed the trophy in this event last year, shooting a final-round 64 to end up at 19-under. Anthony Kim is next on this week's odds list at 12/1, with each of Chad Campbell, Justin Leonard, Stephen Ames, and Tim Clark sitting back at 15/1. Most of golf's big guns, including Tiger Woods, won't be in the field for the event.

      Six-pack for Thursday

CBS Sportsline's top six preseason college football teams........

      6) Virginia Tech-- Expecting big things from Taylor.

      5) USC-- Breaking in another new quarterback this season.

      4) Alabama-- 170,000 for their last two spring games? Amazing.

      3) Oklahoma-- Could have six 1st round picks in '10 NFL Draft.

      2) Texas-- Guess the game in Dallas is pretty big this year.

      1) Florida-- I'm told their quarterback is pretty good.......

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

      13) Dontrelle Willis came back Wednesday, giving up four runs in his 4.2 IP, with ten baserunners and no strikeouts. Not impressive, but at least he was out there again, and thats a start.

      12) Royals had rough 0-5 trip out west, getting whacked 7-2 by A's Wednesday- they're now tied for first with Tigers in AL Central.

      11) Ty Willingham is going to be special teams/runningback coach in the new UFL, for the San Francisco team. Anything has to be better for Willingham than last year was in Seattle.

      10) Memphis' 134 basketball wins the last four seasons are the most by any team in any 4-year span, ever. Not that new coach Pastner is under any undue pressure or anything.

      9) Pastner is no dummy; he graduated Arizona in 2.5 years, fastest in school history for an athlete.

      8) If anyone in New York City politics is reading this, I'm pleading with you to fix the Triboro Bridge; every time I drive on the damn thing, I half expect to fall into a giant crack in the road, like in one of those science-fiction movies. Would paving the bridge be so difficult?

      7) My other complaint on my road trip earlier this week is that the soda machines at St Dominic's athletic fields contained no soda, just water, Vitamin Water and PowerAde. Its a small thing, but I'm dying for a soda and I get freakin' Vitamin Water, which I must admit tastes better than I thought it would.

      6) San Francisco Giants have given Matt Cain 7+ runs in four of his seven starts this year, after rarely scoring big for him last year. Cain is pretty good pitcher who usually struggles in one inning a game. He will throw a no-hitter before he retires.

      5) Why don't pitchers ever catch infield popups? Catchers come out from behind the plate, a way more difficult play, while pitchers are standing there, watching. Good Lord, call for the ball and catch it.

      4) There were two home runs taken away by instant replay, one by Adam Laroche in Pittsburgh, one by Ross Gload in Milwaukee. The one by Laroche was changed to a double, Gload's was called foul. It is the first time instant replay nullified a home run call.

      3) Ryan Zimmerman's hitting streak ended at 30, ending his pursuit of sports' most overrated record; the only reason its a famous record is because Joe Dimaggio holds it-- the two great baseball records that never get mentioned are both held by Ted Williams........

      2) In 1949, Williams reached base safely (walks/HBP count) in 84 straight games, ten more games than anyone else in baseball history. He also owns the third and fourth-longest streaks (Dimaggio 2nd).

      1) But my favorite baseball record is one anyone could set; reaching base safely the most consecutive times. Its basic and it doesn't take a long time-- when he was 39, in 1957, Williams reached base safely in 16 consecutive at-bats. That record has stood for 52 freakin' years, you would think a really fast guy like Ichiro Suzuki or Lou Brock would have challenged it, but it still stands.

        Len’s Top Five

        Thursday, May 14

        Len's Top 5

Happy Thursday everyone, here's my Top 5 for May 14, 2009 from len berman sports.

        1. Quick Hits

The favorite, filly Rachel Alexandra, drew the far outside 13th post for Saturday's Preakness. Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird drew post # 2.
Pittsburgh eliminated Washington in the NHL Playoffs. Denver ousted Dallas in the NBA.
For the first time in major league history, a home run is taken away by instant replay. And it happened in two different games last night.
The Dallas Cowboys new stadium will be called Cowboys Stadium. Not because of the "purity of sport" but because of the recession. No company wants to answer to shareholders about spending millions to slap their name on a stadium.

        2. Keeping out the Riff Raff

Thank God the little people will be kept away from the rich and famous. Everywhere else on earth, kids can get close to the field during batting practice and troll for autographs. Not at the new Yankee palace. Seats in the ritzy section are protected by a concrete moat, and you can't enter without a ticket. To quote the Yankee poobah Lon Trost, "If you purchase a suite, do you want somebody in your suite? If you purchase a home, do you want somebody in your home?" In other words, if you're a knothole gang kid, go to hell.

        3. Outsourcing

Drip, drip. The NFL is so happy that their annual game in London is a success, they're thinking about two games in England in 2010. Sure, keep taking away games from the home fans who have helped finance the stadium and have probably paid personal seat licenses.

        4. Illegal Procedure

A Texas woman reportedly stabbed her husband to death for turning up the TV volume too loud on a Dallas Cowboys game. As a public service, maybe home town announcers should tone down their cheerleading.

        5. Really Big Golfers

OK, we've heard about not having sex before the big game, but apparently a bunch of Mongolian sumo wrestlers have gone way too far. They played golf just two days before the start of the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament. One sumo honcho was quoted as saying, "I would dismiss them if they were my disciples." By the way, did they use golf carts or tanks?

Today's Birthday: The "Goose." Former NFL player and broadcaster Tony Siragusa. 42.
Bonus Birthday: Mr. Star Wars, George Lucas. 65.

Today in Sports: The Mick hits his 500th home run. No instant replay, no curtain calls. He rounded the bases and headed straight to the dugout. 1967.
Bonus Event: A big day for illegal pitches in baseball and lots of other stuff. The product Vaseline gets registered. 1878.

                Thursday, May 14

                NBA playoffs

Celtics were down eight at half in Game 5, rallied to win; they were -12 in 5:50 Davis was off floor, but outscored Magic 21-10 from foul line, and now Howard is questioning Van Gundy's coaching at a critical time, after Celtics won last two games by combined total of five points. 6-24 shooting from arc hurt Orlando in Game 5 (they're 18-45 in two wins). Magic needs win to force Game 7 in Boston.

Rockets defended Bryant so well last game here he didn't take one foul shot while going 7-17 from floor; we'll see what gritty Houston team has left in tank after 118-78 pasting at Staples Tuesday, when Rocket guards hit just 8-26 from floor. None of LA's seven playoff wins are by single digit margins, but they're just 2-2 on road so far in playoffs.

Los Angeles Lakers at Houston Rockets [ESPN | 9:35 PM ET]

Lakers (-8.5, O/U 197): Kobe Bryant said he'll demand that younger players come out focused in Game 6. "Every game, you've got to rebuild your momentum," he said. "It doesn't carry over. You've got to re-establish what you're trying to do out there on the floor. The energy and effort we played with (in Game 5) is not going to be enough on Thursday." In Game 5, coach Phil Jackson started 7-footers Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum to take advantage of Houston's small lineup. "We can throw over the top," Jackson said. "We don't have to use penetration off the dribble when we've got that kind of size."

The Lakers are 9-3 ATS in the last 12 meetings in Houston.
The Lakers are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games following a SU win.

                    Key Injuries - NONE

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 100

Rockets: Houston suffered one of their worst postseason defeats in Game 5 and now faces elimination. "We know it's time to man-up or else it's going to be golf time," said forward Shane Battier. "But we're going to keep shooting 3s and we're going home and we've historically responded very well to double-digit losses this year. That's our team." The Rockets dropped 11 games by double-digits during the regular season and won the next game 10 times. The team winning after the first quarter has won all 11 of Houston's postseason games. The Rockets have won 10 of their last 11 home games.

The Rockets are 10-2 ATS in their last 12 games following a SU loss of more than 10 points.
The Rockets are 21-7 ATS in their last 28 games following an ATS loss.

Key Injuries - C Yao Ming (ankle) is OUT for the season.
G Tracy McGrady (knee) is OUT for the season.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA best bets
                      -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Lakers at Houston Rockets (+8, 197)

Without Yao, the Rockets are forced to use an undersized lineup, with 6-foot-6 Chuck Hayes starting at center. Lakers coach Phil Jackson started 7-footers Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum to take advantage.

Gasol scored 16 points and Bynum, mostly ineffective in the playoffs, added 14. Lamar Odom, who bruised his back in Game 4, came off the bench to score 10 points in 19 minutes and the Lakers scored 56 points in the paint.

''We can throw over the top,'' Jackson said. ''We don't have to use penetration off the dribble when we've got that kind of size. We were effective right off the start.''

The Lakers also found a way to handle speedy point guard Aaron Brooks in Game 5, holding him to 14 points on 4-for-11 shooting. Brooks scored 34 points in Game 4, slicing through the Los Angeles defense for layups or hitting open 3s.

Brooks went 0-for-3 from 3-point range in Game 5, part of Houston's dismal 5-for-29 night.

''We had active hands and active feet,'' Jackson said. ''We got back and helped each other defensively and made them make tougher passes.''

                      Pick: Los Angeles -8

Boston Celtics at Orlando Magic (-7, 190)

Dwight Howard wants the ball more. Stan Van Gundy is telling fans not to panic, and some Orlando Magic players think their series with Boston should already be over.

Orlando seems to be teetering on a Magic Meltdown.

Howard met with Van Gundy and apologized Wednesday - but did not retract his statements - after publicly challenging the coach's strategy in their Game 5 collapse. The Magic center even added another bold comment as the Celtics look to close out Orlando in Game 6 Thursday and move on to the Eastern Conference finals.

''We can't give up hope,'' Howard said Wednesday. ''We're in this series to win it. We are going to win this series.''

That will take quite a turnaround.

It was the second time during these playoffs Howard has questioned why the Magic coach doesn't run more of the offense through him, with the latest being the loudest and most direct. The two met privately Wednesday before the team's film session and said they resolved their differences.

''Getting the ball shouldn't be a big issue for me,'' Howard said. ''There's more ways to dominate the game than scoring. Me and coach, we talked about that. I just can't let my frustrations get to the point where I'll say anything.''

Howard's comments come in a season where Shaquille O'Neal criticized Van Gundy, his former coach with the Miami Heat. O'Neal, who openly complained about coaching decisions following Miami's Game 7 loss to Detroit in the 2005 Eastern Conference finals, went as far as calling Van Gundy a ''master of panic'' and a ''frontrunner'' after the Magic coach insisted O'Neal flopped in a game in March.

Howard's comments have caused enough uproar in Orlando that Van Gundy even suggested Wednesday that any Magic fans starting to panic need to keep their cool.

''If you're an Orlando fan and you consider a loss like that on Boston's home court humiliating, it probably speaks more to the fact that you haven't seen enough playoff series around here in a long time,'' Van Gundy said. ''That kind of panic wouldn't exist in cities that are used to having teams in tough playoff series year after year after year.''

The Celtics have to feel confident.

                      Pick: Boston +7
