          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees at Toronto Blue Jays [7:05 PM ET]

Yankees: The Yankees snapped a five-game losing streak by taking two of three at Baltimore over the weekend. After going 18-10 with a 4.07 ERA and 231 strikeouts in 2008, A.J. Burnett opted out of his contract and signed a five-year, $82.5 million deal with the Yankees - a move unlikely to make him very popular at Rogers Centre on Tuesday. Despite a 5.26 ERA, the Yankees have won four of Burnett's six starts. Coming off a hip injury and a maelstrom surrounding his admitted past steroid use, Alex Rodriguez homered on his first swing of the season Friday, but went 1 for 10 the rest of the series. This will be the Yankees' first game on turf this season.

The Under is 10-3-1 in the Yankees' last 14 games following an off day.
The Yankees are 2-8 in their last 10 vs. AL East foes.

Key Injuries - C Jorge Posada (hamstring) is on the 15-day DL.
C Jose Molina (quad) is on the 15-day DL.
OF Xavier Nady (elbow) is on the 15-day DL.

          PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Blue Jays (-145, O/U 8.5): Roy Halladay won his last five starts versus the Yankees last season to move to 15-5 with a 2.86 ERA in his career against them. In three home starts last year versus New York, Halladay was 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA and two complete games. The Jays have won six of Halladay's seven starts this season. Halladay owns a stellar 44/7 K/BB ratio. The Blue Jays still have something to prove despite the AL's best record, as they've yet to face any of the AL East's presumptive top contenders. A three-game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles has been their only action within the division.

The Over is 11-1 in Halladay's last 12 starts as a favorite.
The Blue Jays are 10-1 in Halladay's last 11 home starts vs. Yankees.

Key Injuries - RP B.J. Ryan (shoulder) is on the 15-day DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side Play of the Day)

Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees at Toronto Blue Jays (-145, 8.5)

Roy Halladay and A.J. Burnett formed a dominant 1-2 punch at the top of Toronto's rotation from 2006-08, but they could never lead the Blue Jays to the playoffs.

With Burnett gone to the Bronx and an unheralded group of starters pitching behind Halladay, the Blue Jays now surprisingly find themselves atop the AL East.

The New York Yankees, meanwhile, will simply be looking to climb back to .500 when Burnett makes his first start against his former team Tuesday night in Toronto, where Halladay will also be on the hill when the clubs open a three-game set.

The two right-handers combined to win 90 games over the past three years for the Blue Jays, but an inconsistent offense and an ultra-competitive division kept Toronto out of the postseason despite three straight winning seasons.

After going 18-10 with a 4.07 ERA and 231 strikeouts in 2008, Burnett opted out of his contract and signed a five-year, $82.5 million deal with the Yankees - a move unlikely to make him very popular at Rogers Centre on Tuesday.

"Of course, money had something to do with it," Burnett said after signing. "How often do you get the chance to put on pinstripes? I mean, whether you want to admit that you love them or hate them, everybody wants to be a Yankee."

There doesn't appear to be any bad blood between Burnett and Halladay. Burnett said one of the reasons he originally signed with Toronto was to learn from the former Cy Young award winner.

"It's funny, because when we parted ways, I told him, 'Thanks for everything. You've been a huge influence,'" Burnett told the Yankees' official Web site. "And he said, 'Thanks. I learned a lot from you, too.' I kind of laughed - 'What did you learn from me, dude?'"

Burnett (2-0, 5.26 ERA) is off to an uneven start in New York, which ranks 29th in the majors with a 5.79 staff ERA despite signing Burnett and CC Sabathia in the offseason.

Nine different pitchers have started at least two games for Toronto (22-12) already, but the Blue Jays have a respectable 4.11 ERA. Halladay (6-1, 3.29) remains the anchor, and he allowed one run in eight innings of Wednesday's 13-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

            Pick: Jays

San Diego Padres at Chicago Cubs (-150, NA)

Despite persistent offseason rumors that he was headed to the Chicago Cubs, Jake Peavy remained with the San Diego Padres.

In his first meeting against the team that attempted to acquire him, Peavy will try to help the Padres avoid a ninth straight road loss as they open a three-game series Tuesday night in Chicago.

Despite a 2.85 ERA that ranked third in the National League, the 2007 NL Cy Young Award winner was 10-11 last season as San Diego finished 63-99 - its worst season since a 101-loss campaign in 1993.

Talk of a trade picked up steam in December with the Padres looking to dump the right-hander's $11 million salary off their 2009 books, and the Cubs coming off another disappointing playoff defeat that extended their world championship drought to 101 years.

Those rumors continued on and off into spring training, but a deal never materialized.

"I'm committed to giving (the Padres) everything I have," Peavy told the team's official Web site this week. "I just want my teammates to know they've got every bit of me."

Instead of playing in Chicago, Peavy (2-4, 4.27 ERA) has endured an inconsistent season and hasn't earned a win since April 16. The right-hander has come away empty in each of his past two starts despite allowing a total of two runs - after giving up 11 in consecutive defeats - but will work with an extra day's rest for the first time this season.

Losers in 16 of its last 20, San Diego (13-19) is hitting .205 in its last 12 games and .198 during its road losing streak that included a sweep in Houston this weekend. Peavy's previous victory April 16 in New York was the last one for Padres starters, who are 0-9 with a 5.15 ERA in their last 22 contests.

After allowing two runs or fewer in the previous five meetings against the Cubs, Peavy gave up four runs in four innings in an 8-5 defeat last season at Wrigley Field.

The right-hander will face a Cubs team that's adjusting to again playing without Aramis Ramirez. The third baseman was hitting .364 with four home runs and 16 RBIs when he dislocated his left shoulder Friday night in Milwaukee and is expected to miss the next six to eight weeks.

Without Ramirez, Chicago (17-14) endured consecutive losses for the fourth time this season before avoiding a sweep with Sunday's 4-2 win over the Brewers. The Cubs are 7-3 this month after finishing 10-11 in April.

Though Ramirez is sidelined, the Cubs may get first baseman Derrek Lee back after he missed the previous five games. The team's official Web site said Lee does not need to go on the disabled list despite being bothered by a bulging disc in his neck.

            Pick: Padres

"We've always felt like we've had the talent," Halladay said. "Over the course of the years, individual guys (on offense) have put up good numbers. We haven't been able to get everybody going at the same time."

Atlanta (16-16) counters with Jair Jurrjens (3-2, 2.01), who can relate to what Santana's going through.

Jurrjens has received one or no runs of support in four of his seven starts, going 0-2 with a 1.61 ERA in those games.

He finally got some offense to work with his last time out, giving up two runs and three hits in seven innings of a 4-2 victory at Florida on Thursday.

The right-hander went 2-1 with a 4.00 ERA in three starts against New York last season.

              Dan Haren (Arizona Diamondbacks)

Diamondbacks manager A.J. Hinch has to feel confident that Dan Haren (3-3, 1.84 ERA) can help cool off the Reds. In spite of his .500 record, the right-hander is fifth in the majors in ERA, sixth in opponents' batting average (.188) and seventh in strikeouts (51).

By those lofty standards, however, Haren disappointed in his last outing, giving up a season-high three runs in six innings of Arizona's 4-3, 10-inning loss at San Diego on Thursday. He struck out four after totaling 30 during a three-start win streak.

Haren is 1-1 with a 5.49 ERA in four games - three starts - against the Reds. He gave up three runs in six innings and didn't get a decision in one game against them last year.

              Slumping

              Justin Masterson (Boston Red Sox)

Justin Masterson (2-2, 5.28) has been filling in for Matsuzaka, but after allowing two total runs while winning his first two starts, he has given up six runs in each of his last two and lost both.

He allowed a career-worst eight hits in 6 1-3 innings of a 9-2 loss to Cleveland on Wednesday.

Boston's offense, which ranks second in the majors with 185 runs, has often picked up the slack, and the Red Sox have continued to produce even without Youkilis for the last week. They've won three of four overall, scoring 29 runs.

              Jordan Zimmermann (Washington Nationals)

The Nationals counter with rookie Jordan Zimmermann (2-1, 5.48), who makes his first start against the Giants.

Zimmermann allowed six runs - all in the first inning - and six hits in six innings of an 11-9 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday, but did not factor in the decision. The right-hander has given up 11 runs in 11 2-3 innings over his last two outings after allowing three runs in 11 1-3 innings in winning his first two career starts.

                SCOREBOARD

                Tuesday, May 12

New York Yankees at Toronto (7:07 p.m. EDT). New York right-hander A.J. Burnett is scheduled to face Roy Halladay in his first game against his former team. Burnett left the Blue Jays in the offseason for an $82.5 million, five-year contract with the Yankees.

                STARS

                Monday

-Ryan Zimmerman, Nationals, extended his hitting streak to 29 games and went 4 for 5 with two homers for Washington in an 11-7 loss to San Francisco.

-Willy Taveras, Reds, matched a career high with five hits as Cincinnati routed Arizona 13-5.

-Derek Lowe, Braves, outlasted Johan Santana, giving up two runs and five hits in Atlanta's 8-3 victory over the Mets that snapped New York's seven-game winning streak.

-Randy Johnson, Giants, struck out nine for his 298th career victory as San Francisco topped Washington 11-7.

                STANDING TALL

In the tallest pitching matchup in baseball history, 6-foot-10 Randy Johnson beat 6-9 Daniel Cabrera. The Big Unit and the towering Cabrera measure a combined 163 inches - one more than the combined heights of Cabrera and Mark Hendrickson on Sept. 1, 2004, in the previous record-holding matchup, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

                LACK OF SUPPORT

Johan Santana lowered his NL-best ERA to 0.78, but lost for the second time this season. The two-time Cy Young Award winner was pulled after 108 pitches with the score tied at 1. Somehow despite his miniscule ERA the Mets have lost three of his seven starts. The Mets have scored 15 runs in Santana's starts this year, 11 while he was on the mound. They have 139 runs in their other 24 games, an average of 5.79.

                NEW ACE

Arizona infielder Josh Wilson pitched a scoreless ninth inning, becoming the fifth Diamondbacks position player to take the mound. Wilson, who also went one inning for Tampa Bay in 2007, kept his career ERA at 0.00.

                SELLING OFF SEATS

New York City will receive $11.5 million from the Yankees in exchange for giving the team rights to sell off seats, signs and other memorabilia from their old ballpark. After two homestands at the new Yankee Stadium dominated by home runs and empty seats near the field, the Yankees and Steiner Collectibles scheduled a news conference for Tuesday to announce memorabilia sales and prices for the original Yankee Stadium, including sod and dirt plus bricks from Monument Park.

                SIDELINED

Carlos Delgado was out of the Mets' lineup again with a recurring hip injury that has New York worried about the long-term health of its cleanup hitter. ... Atlanta's Chipper Jones sat out the Braves' win over the Mets with a stiff and swollen right elbow that he hurt on a swing Sunday.

                SPEAKING

"I feel confident that I'll get back out there, but I'm just kind of realistic. I want to go back out there and pitch. I don't want to end my career with an injury. But you know what? If it doesn't work out, then believe me, I'll be perfectly fine. I'm not worried about that.'' - Atlanta Braves pitcher Tom Glavine after a bullpen session. He's been sidelined since offseason operations on his left elbow and shoulder.

1955 - Sam "Toothpick'' Jones of the Cubs got a no-hitter the hard way. In the ninth inning against Pittsburgh, he walked the bases full and then struck out the next three batters for a 4-0 victory.

1956 - Carl Erskine of the Brooklyn Dodgers pitched a 3-0 no-hitter against the New York Giants.

1966 - Lou Brock's RBI single in the 12th inning gave the St. Louis Cardinals a 4-3 victory over Atlanta in the opening of Busch Memorial Stadium. Felipe Alou hit two home runs for the Braves.

2000 - Boston's Pedro Martinez, who had 17 strikeouts in his last start May 6 against Tampa Bay, struck out 15 in a 9-0 win over Baltimore, to tie an AL record set in 1968 by Cleveland's Luis Tiant for most strikeouts over two games.

2001 - A.J. Burnett pitched an unlikely no-hitter - overcoming a record nine walks - to lead Florida over San Diego 3-0.

2007 - Bartolo Colon of the Los Angeles Angels matched a major league record by winning his 12th straight start against Texas. Colon pitched six innings in a 6-3 victory. The only other pitcher to win 12 straight starts against an opponent was Pedro Martinez, who won a dozen in a row against the Seattle Mariners from 1998-2004.

2008 - Indians second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera turned the 14th unassisted triple play in major league history, accomplishing the feat in the second game of a doubleheader against Toronto. Cabrera made a diving catch on a line drive by Lyle Overbay, touched second base and then tagged out Marco Scutaro to quickly end the fifth inning of Cleveland's 3-0 loss in 10 innings.

Today's birthdays: Felipe Lopez 29; Wes Helms 33; Yogi Berra 84.

Orlando won three of its five road playoff games.

Tuesday's List of 13: Emptying out a cluttered mind.......

                          13) Going down and back to Long Island (roughly 350-mile trip) in a day is a long freakin' day, but also good chance to think things thru, and when your fantasy baseball team is in 15th place in an 18-team league, there's a lot to think about.

                          12) Great to see my cousins; saw my godson play high school ball against Rick Pitino's high school-- Tom's team lost 1-0, but he got one of his team's three hits against St Dominic's Todd Hansen, brother of major leaguer Craig Hansen.

                          11) Were a few major league scouts there looking at the Hansen kid, who is signed to play for St John's, but is expected to be picked high in the big league draft June 6. Young man has a nasty slider.

                          10) Charles Wang, guy that owns the Islanders, donated land for the St Dominc's athletic facility, which is a really nice set of parks. All in all, it was a great day for a drive, not much traffic, perfect weather.

                          9) Baseball on the radio is highly underrated; listened to Nationals on my way home last night, too bad Daniel Cabrera was pitching, since the game got out of hand quickly, and it was time to put CDs in for the rest of the ride home.

                          8) Randy Johnson beat the Nationals for his 298th career win.

                          7) Not only are Cavaliers 8-0 in the playoffs after sweeping Atlanta, they haven't won a playoff game by less than ten points.

                          6) Dirk Nowitzki had 19 points in fourth quarter as Dallas held off elimination by the Nuggets; in first three series games, Nowitzki had scored a total of 11 fourth-quarter points.

                          5) Indians are just 12-21, but Carl Pavano has actually been a positive for them, winning his third straight start for the Tribe Monday.

                          4) Johan Santana lost his first home game since last June, but the runs he gave up to Atlanta were both unearned.

                          3) Pauley Pavilion will undergo a $185M facelift, which will force the UCLA Bruins to play the 2011-12 season in another arena. Pauley is 44 years old, and really needs a facelift to keep up with its rivals.

                          2) 11 players left Tennessee's football team since Lane Kiffin became coach, four since spring practice ended. Kiffin is a lightning rod for controversy, so it'll be interesting to see how he does when the games actually start. Tennessee is in rebuilding mode, for sure.

                          1) Derek Jeter has been scratched for Tuesday night's game against the Blue Jays with an oblique problem. Funny how they don't move A-Rod to short, since he is the best shortstop on the team, anyway.
