    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, May 12

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Rockets try for another win over the Lakers, the Celtics tip off with the Magic, and the Wings look to finish off their set.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The Rockets will be gunning for their second straight win over the Lakers on Tuesday night when the teams meet in Los Angeles for Game 5 of their second-round series. Houston managed to pick up a 99-87 home win in Game 4 on Sunday night without Yao Ming, who will miss the rest of the playoffs with a foot injury. Aaron Books picked up the slack with 34 points for the Rockets in that win, while Shane Battier had 23 points. Kobe Bryant had just 15 points for the Lakers.

As well, Boston will host Orlando on Tuesday night in Game 5 of their Eastern Conference semifinal set, with that series knotted up at 2-2. The Celtics held on for a 95-94 win over the Magic in Orlando on Sunday night, with Paul Pierce scoring a team-high 27 points and both Rajon Rondo and Glen Davis adding 21 points. Dwight Howard picked up 23 points and 17 rebounds in the losing cause.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay will be facing a former teammate on Tuesday night when his team plays host to the Yankees and starter A.J. Burnett. Righthander Halladay (6-1, 3.29 ERA) picked up his third straight win last time out, holding the Angels to one run on six hits over eight innings of work. Righthander Burnett (2-0, 5.26 ERA) has earned four straight no-decisions, last winning back on April 14.

Two other AL East teams meet in Baltimore on Tuesday, with the Orioles hosting the Rays. Also on the Junior Circuit's slate for the night: the White Sox at Cleveland, Seattle at Texas, Detroit at Minnesota, Boston at the Angels, and Kansas City at Oakland. Luke Hochevar makes his season debut for the Royals.

Over in the National League on Tuesday the top pitcher to take the mound will be Diamondbacks righthander Dan Haren, who carries his 3-3 record and 1.84 ERA into a home start vs. the Reds. Rounding out the slate: St. Louis at Pittsburgh, the Dodgers at Philadelphia, Atlanta at the Mets, Florida at Milwaukee, San Diego at the Cubs, Houston at Colorado, and then Washington at San Francisco.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The Ducks will be on the ropes on Tuesday night as they play host to the Red Wings in Game 6 of their best-of-seven series. Detroit got a goal and two assists from Henrik Zetterberg on Sunday in their 4-1 home win, which put them up 3-2 in the series. Johan Franzen, Jiri Hudler, and Darren Helm also scored for the Wings, while Ryan Whitney had a power-play goal in a losing cause for Anaheim.

The other game on the ice on Tuesday has the Bruins trying to stave off elimination at the hands of the Hurricanes once again, with the teams meeting in Game 6 in Carolina. Boston reduced the Canes' series lead to 3-2 on Sunday night with a 4-0 home shutout victory. Tim Thomas stopped all 19 Carolina shots in that victory, while Phil Kessel powered the Bruins' offense with two markers. Carolina goaltender Cam Ward faced 40 shots in the defeat, making 36 saves.

      Len’s Top Five

      Tuesday, May 12

      Len's Top 5

Happy Tuesday everyone, here's my Top 5 for May 12, 2009 from len berman sports.

      1. Quick Hits

The Cleveland Cavaliers complete their 4 game sweep of Atlanta and move onto Eastern Conference Finals.
St. John's star Chris Mullin is dumped from the Golden State front office. Could the Knicks be next?
Like a cold you can't shake, the Minnesota Vikings say they're still interested in Brett Favre.
Since Serena Williams famously boasted that "everyone knows who the real #1 is," she hasn't gotten out of the first round. After losing the first set yesterday in Madrid, she quit with a "leg injury."

      2. Think Pink

The best 3 year old horse didn't race at the Kentucky Derby. She is Rachel Alexander. Her owners want her to race in Saturday's Preakness but guess what? The other owners want to keep her out. Some were talking about entering extra horses with no chance of winning. Only 14 horses are allowed, so if they take up the extra spaces the filly would be aced out. The boys say "it's just business." Horse racing needs a story like Rachel Alexander. It appears the plot has broken down, but it's time to break up the old boys club!

      3. Turnover

Former long time L.A. Clippers General Manager Elgin Baylor sued the owner of the Clippers last February. He accused Donald Sterling of racism; of having a "vision of a Southern plantation-type structure." That same Donald Sterling will be given a lifetime achievement award this week by the NAACP. I'm guessing Baylor ain't coming to the dinner.

      4. Un-Sportsmanlike Conduct

No award this year in Singapore. After 42 years they couldn't come up with a Sportsman of the Year. We can sympathize. It's like trying to pick the Knicks MVP.

      5. Doesn't KKK stand for 3 Strikeouts?

Newspaper stories have surfaced about a baseball game played in Washington D.C. in 1926 between the Ku Klux Klan and the Hebrew All Stars. Oy. The game was stopped by rain in the 7th inning with the KKK leading 4-nothing. Not surprisingly 3 batters were hit by pitches. Even tho the Hebrews batted last, I'm guessing the KKK was wearing their home whites.

Today's Birthday: It ain't over til it's over. The one, the only, Yogi Berra. 84.

Bonus Birthday: Burt "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" Bacharach. 81.

Today in Sports: Let's play two! Ernie Banks of the Chicago Cubs belts home run number 500. 1970.
Bonus Event: Last episode of "Cheers." At a station party that night, Jerry Springer tells me he grew up in the Bronx and is a big Yankee fan. I tell him my favorite episode of the "Jerry Springer Show" is the "Lady who claims to be from Venus." 1993.

Orlando Magic at Boston Celtics [TNT | 8:05 PM ET]

Magic: Orlando did not practice on the travel day before Game 5. "They're the champions. They protect home court well," Dwight Howard said. "We have to go in there with a great mind-set, start to finish it has to be the same. We know they're going to come out and try to knock us out in the first couple of minutes. We have to withstand all their blows." Orlando has split the eight meetings with Boston this season (2-2 in this series, 2-2 in the regular season) and they're 2-2 in the four meetings in Boston. So far, neither team has won back-to-back games in this playoff series.

The Magic are 4-13 ATS in the last 17 meetings in Boston.

"Since I have been with the Celtics, I have been trying to find my niche in our system," Davis said. "Doc told me that if you work on that shot and show me you can make it, I am going to let you shoot it. This year has been proof of hard work. You just have to be focused." Center Kendrick Perkins reported no ill effects of the left shoulder strain he complained about during Sunday night's game. The Celtics took Monday off to return to Boston.

Houston Rockets at Los Angeles Lakers (-12, 198)

The Los Angeles Lakers are grumpy for letting a big chance get away from them in Texas. The Houston Rockets are loose and having a good time, even if they don't have Yao Ming.

Come Tuesday night, one of them is going to have a 3-2 lead in their Western Conference semifinal series.

The top-seeded Lakers no doubt figured that they would have a chance to close out the Rockets in Game 5 at Staples Center. But that was before the Rockets embarrassed Los Angeles 99-87 on Sunday, tying the series and picking up their pace a day after finding out that the 7-foot-6 Yao had a stress fracture in his left foot.

"Yeah, we had a great opportunity," Los Angeles' Kobe Bryant said. "I've been on teams who have made this dumb mistake before. It's important for my guys to stay up and get ready to play and understand that come Tuesday we're going to face a really hungry Rockets team that believes they can win this series."

The series is guaranteed to go back to Houston for Game 6 on Thursday night.

"We could've had a huge advantage, put ourselves in a great position to finish the series off tomorrow, but we didn't and we own up to it," center Pau Gasol said. "That's why we're going to come out tomorrow and show what we're made of."

The Lakers could be without forward Lamar Odom. He was listed as questionable for Tuesday night's game after an MRI and CT scan showed he has a bruised lower back. He was hurt Sunday when he drove into the lane and collided with Shane Battier, landing hard on the court.

The Rockets would love to be the ones going back to Houston with the series lead.

They were in a good mood after watching film following their arrival in Los Angeles on Monday afternoon.

"We have a free mentality," said Battier, who outplayed Bryant in Sunday's wipeout. "Every shot that everyone takes is a free shot. If it goes in, great. If not, we tried. We have nothing to lose. No one expected much out of us. We expect an effort out of us, but we're going to take our shots, play hard and take our chances."

The Rockets are in the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 1997. The Lakers are trying to get back to the NBA finals a year after losing to Boston in six games.

Bryant said the Lakers' mood Monday was "grumpy, a little quiet," but that they will just have to deal with the disappointment of the wire-to-wire rout, when the smaller Rockets' lineup took advantage of Los Angeles' defensive lapses.

"You can't get it back. You've just got to move forward and get ready for the next one," he said.

The Rockets stunned the Lakers - and most everyone else - by racing to a 29-16 lead in the first quarter. They never trailed and led by as many as 29 points before the Lakers at least made it look respectable toward the end.

"We didn't understand the type of energy Houston was going to come with," Bryant said. "We didn't have that type of energy."

It wasn't a case of the Lakers taking the Rockets lightly without Yao, Bryant said.

"Naw, man they just kicked our (rear)," he said.

The Lakers say they need to have the kind of energy the Rockets had Sunday.

"If we want to be a championship team we have to go after it every single game," Gasol said. "We can't take for granted that because we're better individually or maybe collectively that we can play 70, 80 percent. We have to play 100 percent from the get go."

Gasol said the Lakers were "outhustled and outplayed and we could have won if we really wanted to."

They didn't, but the Rockets know what the Lakers are capable of.

The Lakers seemed to be in control of the series after Bryant scored 33 in a 108-94 victory on Friday night.

Outscoring Bryant 23-15 on Sunday is going to be a nice little memory for Battier.

"It's not going to happen too often. So this box score may be framed in my house somewhere," he said. "He's going to come back with a vengeance in Game 5."

Guard Aaron Brooks scored a career-high 34 points in Game 4, and the Rockets were still talking about their point guard on Monday.

"Maybe it's a bowlegged thing, a knock-kneed, pigeon-toed thing, but boy, they can't keep up with him," said bulky 6-6 forward Chuck Hayes, who started for Yao on Sunday. "He uses his speed to his advantage to get to the paint. For such a little guy, he finishes pretty well."

                  Pick: Over

Boston Bruins at Carolina Hurricanes (-160, 5.5)

The Bruins managed to avoid elimination Sunday night crushing the Hurricanes 4-0 and forcing a Game 6 showdown in Carolina. The B’s dominated from start to finish outshooting the Canes 40-19 and outhitting them 25-15.

“We needed to come in with more energy and be more committed to playing how we played all year,” coach Claude Julien told reporters. “And we saw it tonight, obviously.”

Boston will bring more than energy and momentum into Game 6. The Canes made the Bruins angry when Carolina forward Scott Walker punched Aaron Ward while he still had his gloves on late in the third period.

“I thought the Walker incident was certainly something that he shouldn’t be proud of,” Julien said. “Obviously the other guy is not ready to fight or willing to fight. Right now we fear that he has a broken orbital bone.

“He was trying to be disciplined. Walker decided to do something a little different. Come in and help his teammate. Hopefully people in charge do their job and decide what they want to do with it.”

To top it all off, Bruins captain Zdeno Chara fell to the ice after being hacked from behind by Jussi Jokinen at the end of the second period. Chara returned in the third period with a thunderous ovation from the crowd.

Expect the Bruins to avoid elimination once again Tuesday night and extend the series to a Game 7 in Boston.

                            Pick: Bruins

Detroit Red Wings at Anaheim Ducks (+140, 5.5)

The Ducks looked completely flustered Sunday night and were ultimately defeated 4-1 by the defending Stanley Cup champions. They put in a valiant effort for about six minutes in the second period when they cut the lead down to one goal, but Detroit dominated the rest of the way.

Jonas Hiller managed to keep the Ducks in the game stopping the 14 shots fired at him in the first period. But a couple of costly turnovers led to two quick goals in the second period.

“Not at all,” said defenseman James Wisniewski when asked if his team played with desperation. “We played like it was Game 38 of the regular season. But the beauty of it is we’re only down 3-2. Winning two in a row has been done many times over the years, and then we win the series.”

The Ducks remain optimistic about their chances to win the series, but if they want to stay alive they will need to get off to a better start and create more scoring chances.

“I thought at times we looked worn down,” coach Randy Carlyle told reporters. “We’ll fly home. We’ll get re-energized, re-focus. We’ll visit on things that we have to do and emotionally try to charge ourselves. We weren’t emotionally involved enough on a consistent basis.”

After being thoroughly outplayed in Game 5, the Ducks will play with conviction in front of their own fans.

                            Pick: Ducks
