    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, April 14

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Heat, Hawks, Celtics, Sixers, Jazz, and Lakers hit the hardwood, while the Rays play host to their AL East rival Yankees.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

Six playoff-bound teams populate the NBA's tripleheader on Tuesday night, with the Heat and Hawks tipping things off in Atlanta. The Hawks played host to the Heat back on February 27, with Atlanta picking up a 91-83 home win as a 5.5-point favorite. Al Horford scored 21 points and grabbed 22 rebounds for the Hawks in that win, and Dwyane Wade was good for 21 points in the losing cause.

The Sixers host the Celtics in the second game of the Tuesday-night docket, with Boston having edged Philadelphia 100-99 on the road as a 3-point favorite in their last meeting on February 3. Paul Pierce (29), Ray Allen (23), and Rajon Rondo (20) all had 20 or more points for the Celtics in that victory. Andre Iguodala had a team-high 22 points for the Sixers, and Andre Miller had 21 points.

Tuesday's nightcap then has Utah at the Lakers, with Los Angeles looking to avenge a 113-109 road loss vs. the Jazz on February 11 as a 1-point underdog. Deron Williams tossed in 31 points and added 11 assists for Utah in that contest, while Mehmet Okur was good for 22 points and eight rebounds. Kobe Bryant had a game-high 37 points for the Lakers, while Lamar Odom contributed 19 points.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

A.J. Burnett will make his second start as a member of the Yankees on Tuesday night when his team plays on the road in Tampa Bay to continue the series between the AL East rivals. Righthander Burnett earned a win against the Orioles last week, allowing two earned runs on seven hits over 5 1-3 innings. The Rays will go with Matt Garza on Tuesday night; the righthander impressed in a win over the Red Sox in his first start of the year, allowing one run over seven innings.

A full American League slate on Tuesday contains six other games, including the White Sox at Detroit, the Angels at Seattle, Baltimore at Texas, Toronto at Minnesota, Cleveland at Kansas City, and Boston at Oakland. Over in the National League there are just three games on Tuesday, with Florida at Atlanta, Cincinnati at Milwaukee, and St. Louis at Arizona. The Cards go with Chris Carpenter in that one; he dominated the Pirates to win his first start of the season.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The top-seeded Bruins will get the rival Canadiens in their first-round playoff matchup this week as teams begin their quest for the Stanley Cup. The other Eastern Conference matchups: No. 2 Washington vs. No. 7 New York Rangers, No. 3 New Jersey vs. No. 6 Carolina, and No. 4 Pittsburgh vs. No. 5 Philadelphia. Over in the Western Conference No. 1 San Jose will get a west-coast rival in the first round of the postseason when they take on No. 8 Anaheim. As well, it'll be No. 2 (and defending-champion) Detroit vs. No. 7 Columbus, No. 3 Vancouver vs. No. 6 St. Louis, and then finally No. 4 Chicago vs. No. 5 Calgary.

        Late Night Update

-- Orlando Hudson is the first LA Dodger to hit for the cycle at Dodger Stadium, the first Dodger since Wes Parker in 1970 to hit a cycle anywhere, just second Dodger cycle since Gil Hodges in '49.

-- Jermaine Dye, Paul Konerko hit back/back HRs; oddity is that it was the 300th career home run for both players.

-- Chien Ming Wang has faced 33 batters in two starts; 15 of them have scored-- is it time to liberate Phil Hughes from AAA????

-- Nick Swisher pitched bottom of 8th for Bronx, and was the best Bomber pitcher, not allowing a run.

-- Royals' Zack Greinke has a 25-inning scoreless streak.

-- Brian Barden hit an opposite field HR in top of the 8th inning, his first big league tater, as Cardinals beat Arizona 2-1.

-- Dallas Braden tossed six strong innings, Nomar Garciaparra hit a homer against his old club, as Oakland spanked the Red Sox, 8-2.

Tuesday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a sad day.............

        13) Sad day in sports Monday, with passing of both Harry Kalas and Mark Fidrych. We're constantly reminded that we're not guaranteed anything in this world, so we have the make the most while we can.

        12) I met Harry Kalas at the Vet in 1990, after a Phils-Reds game; a very nice man with an amazing voice. We talked for few minutes; it turned out his brother was a professor at UAlbany. He had no reason to be nice to me, other than that's just the way he was. NFL Films is going to miss him, and Philadelphia will miss him a ton.

        11) Mark Fidrych owned baseball in 1976; he was 19-9, 2.34 in his 29 starts, finishing 24 of them; the Tigers sold out most of his home starts the second half of the season. The Bird was quirky (he talked to the baseball before he threw it), he was 21, and boy was he good. Sadly, he hurt his arm, and was 10-10 the next four seasons- he never cashed in on his amazing success of '76. Monday he died at age 54, in an industrial accident at his business. Just very sad.

On to happier subjects, though just about anything would qualify....

        10) NFL Draft is April 25-26, with a 4:05 start on Saturday the 25th for what reason nobody knows. Guess they want the draft on TV at night. Decisions like this are part of why I wound up divorced.......

        9) 49ers interviewed Matthew Stafford, and their psychologist was asking the QB about his parents' divorce when he was in high school. Stafford bristled at some of the questions, so as a result, the 49ers are not going to draft Stafford, if he is available. Given that the Niners are not exactly solid under center, and this is a source of controversy in the Bay Area. Would love to be a fly on the wall to hear some of the conversations regarding critical decisions that teams have in the draft.

        8) If you're a trivia buff, Jody Gerut hit the first homer at Citi Field; he was the first batter, and homered down the rightfield line.

        7) San Diego used 46 different pitchers in spring training, and they came up with obscure names on the Opening Day roster, but skipper Bud Black is a pitching guru, and Padres look improved in the early days of this season. Weird thing is they won the first game played at Citi Field, with former Mets Sanchez, Bell getting the last six outs.

        6) Was watching replay of a UCLA-Stanford baseball game Sunday night, and Bruins' SS is the son of A's 3B coach Mike Gallego-- kid pitching for Stanford was son of Bill Mooneyham, who pitched for the A's in 1986, where he was briefly a teammate of Mike Gallego. Sometimes its a small world we live in.

        5) Cool name for Stanford's baseball stadium-- Sunken Diamond.

        4) Our next item is too strange to be true, but I checked it out and it is true-- Florida International is in discussions to hire Isiah Thomas as its new basketball coach. FIU is in the Sun Belt Conference- their big rival is Florida Atlantic, coached by the even more-inept Mike Jarvis. Imagine those two matching wits twice a season? Priceless.

        3) #125 on the PGA Tour money list is Alex Cejka, with $194,266; so far, 20 golfers have already earned $1M+ this season.

        2) 7pm Tuesday, NFL Network for the chosen few, nfl.com for the rest of us-- the 2009 NFL schedule is unveiled.

        1) Don't look now, but the Padres have won five games in a row, are 6-2 and are the surprising leaders in the National League West.

Los Angeles Angels at Seattle Mariners (+100, 9)

The Los Angeles Angels hope a road trip will help give them a small sense of normalcy. Another moment of silence for Nick Adenhart and Ken Griffey Jr.'s return to Seattle, though, promise to bring plenty of emotion.

After a draining homestand, the Angels will pay tribute to Adenhart again Tuesday night as Griffey takes the field in a Mariners uniform at Seattle for the first time since 1999.

Los Angeles (3-3) takes to the road for the first time this season following an eventful weekend series against playoff rival Boston. The Angels won the opener 6-3 on Friday night after a **** homage to Adenhart, and they were involved in a bench-clearing incident in the finale Sunday before winning 5-4.

The Mariners' home opener will include a moment of silence for Adenhart, whose next start would have been in this contest.

There will also be a buzz due to Griffey's much-anticipated return as a Mariner. He was 19 years old when he began his career with Seattle in 1989, establishing himself as one of the league's most exciting players in 11 years there before signing with Cincinnati as a free agent.

Griffey, 39, is batting .133 (2-for-15) with one home run, but Seattle (5-2) has had a strong start to its season. The Mariners have won four straight, including three against Oakland over the weekend.

The Mariners will now hand the ball to Carlos Silva (0-1, 10.80 ERA), who looks to improve upon an awful season debut. He allowed six runs and eight hits in five innings as Seattle lost 6-5 to Minnesota on Wednesday night.

The veteran right-hander is 0-7 with an 8.13 ERA in his last 12 starts and has lost 16 of his last 17 decisions. He was 0-7 with a 7.90 ERA in his final eight outings at Safeco Field last season and hasn't won there since April 12, 2008.

Los Angeles will counter with Shane Loux (0-0, 2.81 ERA in 2008), who is getting a chance in a thin Angels rotation. This will be his first major league start since 2003 with Detroit.

The 29-year-old right-hander, a non-roster invitee, went 1-1 with a 4.58 ERA in four starts and two relief appearances in spring training. He was out of baseball in 2007 before signing a minor league deal with the Angels, pitching well enough to earn relief duty with Los Angeles down the stretch last season.

                    Pick: Over

New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays (-121, 9)

Matt Garza has pitched very well against AL East rivals, except the New York Yankees.

Garza will try to record his second career victory over New York as the Tampa Bay Rays continue a three-game home series Tuesday night.

Garza (1-0, 1.29 ERA) went 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA in two starts against Boston in to earn MVP honors in last October's AL championship series. In the regular season, he is 13-6 with a 3.04 ERA in his career against the AL East - his ERAs against the other two divisions in the league are well above four.

That success continued last Thursday at Boston, when Garza yielded one run and four hits over seven sharp innings to earn a 4-3 victory in his season debut.

The right-hander hasn't usually shown that stuff against the Yankees. He is 1-2 with a 4.56 ERA in five appearances, including four starts, in his career versus New York - the only AL East team with a winning record against him.

If Tampa Bay (4-3) provides Garza with the kind of support it gave Scott Kazmir on Monday, his job will be easy. The Rays had three homers among 17 hits in a 15-5 win to open this series on the night they raised their league and division championship banners.

The game was so bad for New York (3-4) that manager Joe Girardi moved first baseman Nick Swisher to the mound to pitch. Swisher, who homered earlier in the contest, worked a scoreless eighth inning.

The Yankees expect to get first baseman Mark Teixeira back in the lineup Tuesday. Teixeira has missed three straight games with tendinitis in his left wrist.

A.J. Burnett (1-0, 3.38) will get the ball Tuesday for the Yankees.

Burnett allowed two runs over 5 1-3 innings Thursday in an 11-2 victory at Baltimore to win his Yankees debut. He threw 98 pitches before departing, but the outing was enough to impress his manager.

The veteran right-hander has extensive experience against Tampa Bay from his days with Toronto, going 7-4 with a 2.98 ERA in 16 starts versus the Rays. He went 1-2 with a 3.15 ERA against them in three starts in 2008.

                    Pick: Under

New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays [7:05 PM ET]

Yankees: A. J. Burnett allowed two runs over 5 1-3 innings Thursday in an 11-2 victory at Baltimore to win his Yankees debut. He threw 98 pitches before departing. “He was great today. He had a great fastball, a great curveball,” manager Joe Girardi said. “It was a big performance by him.” Burnett has much experience against Tampa Bay from his days with Toronto, going 7-4 with a 2.98 ERA in 16 starts versus the Rays. He went 1-2 with a 3.15 ERA against them in three starts in 2008. Carlos Pena is 2-for-19 with 9 strikeouts against Burnett, while Evan Longoria is 1-for-10 with 5 strikeouts.

The Over is 6-1 in the last 7 meetings.
The Yankees are 8-2 in their last 10 vs. a team with a winning record.

Key Injuries - 1B Mark Teixeira (wrist) is day-to-day.
3B Alex Rodriguez (hip) is on the 15-day DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side Play of the Day)

Rays (-125, O/U 8.5 ): In the regular season, Matt Garza is 13-6 with a 3.04 ERA in his career against the AL East. That success continued last Thursday at Boston, when Garza yielded one run and four hits over seven sharp innings to earn a 4-3 victory in his season debut. “He’s got dominant stuff when he settles in. You saw it last year,” reigning AL MVP Dustin Pedroia said. “He’s got some of the best stuff in the major leagues.” However, Garza is 1-2 with a 4.56 ERA in five appearances, including four starts, in his career versus New York.

The Rays are 2-10 in Garza's last 12 starts vs. a team with a losing record.
The Rays are 44-13 in their last 57 home games vs. a right-handed starter.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Boston Red Sox at Oakland A's [10:05 PM ET]

Red Sox (-155, O/U 8.5): Coming off a season in which he lost 3 times in 29 starts, Daisuke Matsuzaka suffered his first defeat of 2009 in his season debut, allowing 4 runs on 3 home runs in a 4-3 loss to Tampa Bay on Thursday. The Japanese right-hander struggled with efficiency, throwing 100 pitches in 5 1-3 innings and walking 3. “Right now, not being able to go deep in games is stressful, both for myself and the bullpen,” said Matsuzaka. He went 2-0 with a 2.55 ERA in three outings against Oakland last year, but averaged fewer than 6 innings in those starts despite giving up just 8 total hits.

The Red Sox have lost four straight and 11 of 14 at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.
The Red Sox are 14-2 in Matsuzaka's last 16 road starts.

Key Injuries - SS Jed Lowrie (wrist) is on the 15-day DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

A's: Dana Eveland gave up three runs in six innings against the LA Angels on Wednesday, in a game the A’s won 6-4 by scoring all their runs in the final 2 innings. “I kept the team in the game, which is obviously the goal,” Eveland said. “With the team we have this year, you just get back on the mound, throw strikes, get as deep into the game as I possibly can, and let our big bats go to work.” Eveland was unable to do that in his lone previous start against the Red Sox. He gave up 9 runs in two-plus innings at Fenway Park last Aug. 2, allowing home runs to Jason Bay and Kevin Youkilis in Boston’s 12-2 win.

The A's are 7-1 in their last 8 home games vs. a right-handed starter.

Key Injuries - 3B Eric Chavez (shoulder) is DOUBTFUL.

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 5
