San Jose was the best overall NHL team in the league this year. They held a league best 53-18-11 overall record and were most impressively 32-5-4 at home. When you watch this team play you see a group of talented BIG forwards with speed and the combination of that is far and few between. The Sharks were 2nd in the league in goals against behind the Bruins only allowing 204 goals in 82 games for an average of just 2.49 per game. San Jose's goalie Evgeni Nabokov had another stellar year boasting a 41-12-8 record with a GAA of only 2.44, save percentage of .910, and 7 shutouts. In the 6 meetings between the Sharks and the Ducks this year San Jose was 4-2 winning 2 on the road and 2 at home. They really are a balanced all around team. Also what makes things even better is this rediculously short price because of the Ducks playoff success in past years but quite frankly Anaheim is a much worse team this time around and were very shaky for most of the year. A really bad thing about the Ducks is their lack of discipline. They are so boneheaded sometimes with the penalties they take they simply cannot stay out of the box. One of the most undervalued stats heading into this series is that the Sharks had the #3 power play in the league this year converting at 24.2%. The Ducks penalty killing was one of the worst ranked #23 out of 30 teams. The Ducks gave up the 4th most power play goals against in the entire league this year. Only Toronto, Atlanta, and Tampa Bay gave up more which are 3 of the worst teams in the league. Also I love how everyone in the media and sports shows if giving the Ducks a chance here because they won the Cup two years ago but I just dont see it. Sharks dominate the special teams department here and also pride on defense and goaltending and take this series in 5 games!!!
Ok one done and that took longer than I thought...gonna do them post by post I guess..this will also allow my thread to be bumped regularly for attention and more views...Detroit Red Wings write up to follow shortly..
Oh shit baby let the best time of the year begin. I dont care what anyone says but you cannot I repeat CANNOT consider yourself a true sports fan and not enjoy Nascar
I agree Chado.Talladega is coming up in 2 weeks and no weeks off until July.I couldn't have said it better myself
The Detroit Red Wings were also one of the best teams in the league this year and quite frankly have been one of the best over the past decade. I dont think there is much to be made of their struggle down the stretch as I think when you make the post season year in and year out (20 straight times or something like that) as a team you almost get bored with meaningless regular season games and just want the big dance to begin. This team is playoff ready every year. The defending Stanley Cup champs are pretty much the same as last year but have added 40 goal scorer and power forward Marian Hossa from the Pens in the off season. He has been out recently with a groin injury but he will be fine and ready to go. The Wings finished the year again as the Central division champs. Dont know how many times in a row that is or how often but its dominant to say the least. With a record of 51-21-10 the Wings were #1 in goals scored for average of 3.60 per game. No one was even close the #2 team in goals scored were the Bruins with a significant 21 less. So guess who had the #1 power play in the league this year. Of course the Wings with those kind of offensive numbers. One thing we can not forgot to mention is that Columbus was DEAD LAST in the league on the power play this year converting at only 12.7% thats almost unheard of for a playoff bound team. Detroit does not have the one two punch of Hasek and Osgood this year as he retired and Ozzie really hasnt played well at all. This could however hinder the chances of repeating and defending their Cup however they put the puck in the back of the net with so many weapons it may not matter. Rookie goaltender sensation of the Jackets has played amazing this year but he has not seen on offensive juggernaut like the Wings possess. Mason and Nash will not be enough to get past the reigning Wings. Detroit in 5!!!
oh really? like when they got swept by the ducks in 03, 2nd round exit in 04, first round exit to edmonton in 06 and got taken to 6 games by nashville last year?
I'm not saying they are going to lose, but they certainly aren't dominant by any means at the start of the playoffs.

I agree vondie. San Jose chokes year after year after year in the playoffs. They have the best record in the league and all the experts say they have the most pressure on them. They say that because of their horrible postseason track record.
GL Chad but i agree with vondie and thought the same thing as him when i read that.
This wager for me is based primarily on three things. Martin Brodeur, home ice advantage, and value. If the Devils didnt struggle down the stretch and the Canes didnt heat up this line would have easily been -200 IMO. The Devils really struggled over the past month of the season and frankly so did the Wings. Both teams pretty much had their division wrapped and up and had a ton of meaningless games throughout the month of March and April. Both teams are built for playoffs and I really feel they can flick the switch and get it done. Martin Brodeuer is the best goalie of all time. Recently this year he broke Patrick Roy's record for all time wins. He was injured for most of the year and this team continued to win games with Clemennson and Weekes. This for me was a big shock as I always thought of the Devils as Brodeur and nothing else but this was above and beyond what they could do and a real testament for me. Both teams are in the middle of the pack on the power play and penalty kill so no edge there for either. The Devils were 28-12-1 at home this year while the Canes were just 19-16-6 on the road. Even though Carolina won 3 of the 4 meetings against the Devils 2 of 3 were in the past month all in games in which the Canes were fighting for a playoff spot and the Devils had pretty much alredy clinched division champs. New Jersey has won 5 of the past 7 meetings at home against the Canes and I expect them to hold serve at home. I dont know what it is but I am not sold on Carolina here at all. They won 11 or 12 in a row at home this year but are only 26-14-1 overall at home. What happend before that. Also when 3 of the 5 teams in your division are non playoff teams that you play 6 times per year it makes a bunch of your wins a little inflated. I know the return of Erik Cole gave them a boost but I feel the defensive presence of the Devils trap will be too much for Carolina to handle. In the NHL playoffs your goaltender can be your most important player and in Martin Brodeur, a year in which he set the record for most wins all time, I trust in him to not lose in the first round at least. Call it a hunch call it what you will but I feel that either the Devils or the Bruins will be representing the East in this years Stanley Cup and have thought this for quite some time and a -135 line this was to good to pass up in this spot. Devils in 6!!!

Good points man and I appreciate your input. I got a little carried away with that part of my writeup. I guess what I was meaning to say was in reference to how they have made the playoffs in more "consecutive" seasons than any other major sports team in history. Every single year since 1990 I think? So they are always there and always ready.
GL Chado,,,,,I agree totally with you about playoff hockey.....it is an awesome time of the year,,,and for me nothing except a Super Bowl run can beat it...and well we all know who won the Super Bowl, so even a couple of rounds with my Pens will do......anything extra will be a miracle....
