    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, April 7

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Red Sox meet the Rays, the Phillies battle the Braves, and the NBA and NHL head into their league's home stretches.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA takes back the basketball spotlight from the NCAA Tournament on Tuesday, with nine games set for the pro hardwood. The Bobcats will be looking to keep their slim playoff hopes alive on Tuesday by getting past the Sixers in Charlotte. The Bobcats enter play this week on a three-game losing streak, and they're three games back of the Bulls and the Pistons for eighth place in the East.

The Bulls will host New York on Tuesday, while it'll also be Atlanta at Toronto, New Orleans at Miami, Portland at Memphis, the Lakers at Sacramento, Minnesota at the Clippers, San Antonio at Oklahoma City, and Orlando at Houston. The Spurs are just a half-game ahead of the Rockets in the Southwest Division standings heading into Tuesday night, with the Hornets two games back.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The Braves will be looking to knock off the defending-champion Phillies for the second straight game on Tuesday night when they continue their season-opening series in Philadelphia. Atlanta got a strong pitching performance from Derek Lowe on Sunday as they won their opener by a score of 4-1. Righthander Jair Jurrjens (13-10, 3.68 ERA in 2008) will take to the mound for Atlanta on Tuesday; the Phillies will counter with lefthander Jamie Moyer (16-7, 3.71 ERA).

The other National League matchups on Tuesday: Milwaukee at San Francisco, Washington at Florida, the Cubs at Houston, Pittsburgh at St. Louis, the Dodgers at San Diego, and Colorado at Arizona. The Rockies will go with righthander Ubaldo Jimenez on Tuesday; he was 12-12 with a 3.99 ERA last season. The D-Backs counter Jimenez with Dan Haren, who was 16-8 with a 3.33 ERA in 2008.

Over in the American League, the Red Sox and Rays will try to get their season started in Boston; their Monday matchup was called off due to the threat of rain. Boston's Josh Beckett (12-10, 4.03 ERA in 2008) will take on Tampa Bay's James Shields (14-8, 3.56 ERA), weather permitting. Also on the AL slate: Kansas City at the White Sox, Detroit at Toronto, Seattle at Minnesota, and Oakland at the Angels. Jered Weaver (11-10, 4.33 ERA) will get the call for L.A.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The Panthers and Rangers will continue their respective quests for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference on Tuesday night, with Florida in Philadelphia and New York hosting Montreal. The Panthers picked up a big win at home against the Penguins on Sunday, which moved them into a tie with the Rangers at 89 points through 79 games. New York fell to the Bruins on Saturday.

A busy Tuesday night schedule in the National Hockey League has 11 other games on tap, including the Islanders at Carolina, Toronto at New Jersey, Washington at Atlanta, Boston at Ottawa, Pittsburgh at Tampa Bay, Dallas at Minnesota, Chicago at Nashville, Los Angeles at Edmonton, St. Louis at Phoenix, and Colorado at San Jose. As well, the Flames will be in Vancouver to take on the Canucks, with both teams looking to end in top spot in the Northwest.

      Six-pack for Tuesday

-- 14 of 30 major league teams have cut their payroll, 10 by $10M or more. Expect that trend to continue for the forseeable future.

-- Mets' Daniel Murphy had one too many ABs last year, so last year was his rookie season, or else he'd have good shot at winning Rookie of the Year this season.

-- In case you hadn't heard, CBS is televising the Masters this week

-- ESPN is televising the Par 3 tournament from Augusta 3pm on Wednesday; hopefully, Chris Berman won't be involved.

-- Pitches thrown during intentional walks shouldn't count towards a pitcher's pitch count- they're soft tosses, not real pitches.

-- Sean Miller changes his mind and signs on to coach Arizona; he is in for a major rebuilding job with the Wildcats, while a Xavier team he leaves behind could be in the Final Four next March.

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

      Late Night Update

-- A's new DH-laden lineup made Joe Saunders look a lot like Steve Carlton Monday night, as Angels beat Oakland 3-0.

-- North Carolina won the worst national championship game I can remember, hammering an overmatched Michigan State squad 89-72 in front of a ton of mostly disappointed fans in the Motor City.

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday's List 13: Random thoughts from Opening Day..........

      13) When college basketball practice started in October, would have been hard to find anyone who didn't think North Carolina would win the national title, and for once, everyone was right. National titles are now decided by who enters the NBA Draft and who doesn't.

      12) Would be remiss if I didn't point out that this year's tournament hasn't been as good as usual; some of it was that the mid-majors had a down year, some of it is that the gap between the big boys and little guys has widened, thanks to all kids having to play college ball for at least a season. Bottom line is that CBS can't be real happy with this year's tournament. Hopefully next year will be better.

      11) North Carolina won all its games in this year's tournament by at least 12 points. LSU gave them their stiffest test in the tournament; they were tied with the Tar Heels with 8:10 left, but lost by 14.

      10) Anyone who thinks Clark Kellogg is an improvement over Billy Packer as a college basketball analyst is delusional. Packer wore out his welcome by being a curmudgeon, but Kellogg has regressed as an analyst and offers very little analysis other than the obvious.

      9) If you mortgage your house so you can go to a ballgame down in the Bronx, keep in mind that a 16-ounce beer is $9, a bad of freakin' Cracker Jack is now a hefty $5.75. Almost as bad as the prices of the food at movie theaters in this great country of ours.

      8) Toronto Adam Lind's knocked in six runs for the Blue Jays; out in the desert, Felipe Lopez and Tony Clark both homered twice for the Diamondbacks in their wild 9-8 win over Colorado.

      7) Cliff Lee gave up seven runs Monday; last year, he didn't give up his seventh earned run until May 18th.

      6) CC Sabathia faced 25 batters Monday in Baltimore; 13 of them got on base, six of them scored, none of them struck out.

      5) It drives me nuts when a team puts a shift on a hitter with hitter's team trailing by more than a run, and the hitter doesn't just punch the ball the other way to get on base and get a rally started. Either selfish or stupid, really not sure which is worse.

      4) Opening Day is ton of fun, even when the pitchers on my fantasy team get pounded on like a pinata at a birthday party.

      3) Jeff Garcia's nomadic football career will continue in Oakland this fall; he signs with the Raiders, bad news for JaMarcus Russell.

      2) Few years ago in July, was at an AAU basketball game down in Florida, at Poinciana HS near Kissimmee-- a team from Kansas City against a team from Albany. Watched the game with a young coach named Josh Pastner, who was an assistant coach at Arizona at the time. Monday, Pastner was named the new hoop coach at Memphis.

      1) For 90 minutes, I picked his brain, asked ton of questions, and he was polite and answered all of them, and taught me a lot about how the business of college hoop works. I wish him well at Memphis, in a tough job with high expectations and very little upside.

            Tips and Trends
            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Orlando Magic at Houston Rockets [8:30 PM ET]

Magic (-1, O/U 188.5): Orlando's Dwight Howard wasn't happy following an 88-82 victory at Atlanta on Sunday. His team shot just 38 percent from the field and remains a half-game behind Boston for the #2 seed in the Eastern Conference. “We didn’t play with good enough energy like we needed to, so we really had to grind it out,” Howard said. “We weren’t focused at the beginning of the game. I talked to my guys and told them we’ve got to kick it up. We’re playing for something right now.”

Magic are 2-11 ATS in the last 13 meetings.
The UNDER is 8-3 in Orlando's last 11 games overall.

Key Injuries - G Mickael Pietrus (knee) is questionable.
G Jameer Nelson (shoulder) is OUT.

            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Rockets: Howard has struggled in nine career meetings with Houston, averaging just 12.8 points on 45.9 percent shooting and 10.4 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, Houston's Yao Ming has averaged 24 points on 55.6 percent shooting and 9.8 rebounds vs. Howard. The Rockets are still trying to clinch home-court advantage in the first round. “We play as hard as any team in the league,” Rockets head coach Rick Adelman said. “We for the most part defend, but it’s our concentration during parts of the game that lacks, and you can’t afford to do that. I know we have young guys in a lot of spots, but that’s something that we have to continue to get better (at) in the last five games.”

Rockets are 21-6 ATS in their last 27 games vs. Southeast Division.
The OVER is 3-1 in Houston's last 4 games overall.

                This Day in Baseball
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On April 7 in Baseball History...

1958 - The Dodgers erect a 42-foot screen in left field at the Los Angeles Coliseum to cut down on home runs. Left field is only 250 feet down the line.

1963 - A public stock offering of 115,000 shares in the Milwaukee Braves is withdrawn after only 13,000 shares are sold to 1,600 new investors.

1969 - Bill Singer of the Dodgers is credited with the first official save as Los Angeles defeats Cincinnati, 3-2.

1970 - Major league baseball returns to Wisconsin as the Brewers play their first game in Milwaukee, losing to California 12-0 before a crowd of 37,237.

1971 - The dismissal of Curt Flood's suit against baseball is upheld by a three-judge U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

1973 - Cleveland sets day-game and opening-game records as 74,420 fans watch the Indians beat the Tigers, 2-1.

1977 - Al Woods hits a pinch home run in his first major league at bat as the Toronto Blue Jays are 9-5 winners in their Exhibition Stadium debut against the White Sox.

1978 - The U.S. Court of Appeals upholds an earlier court decision in support of Commissioner Kuhn's voiding of attempted player sales by A's owner Charlie Finley in June 1976. Finley's appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court will be rejected on October 2.

1979 - In the earliest no-hitter in major league history, Ken Forsch of the Astros shuts downs the Braves, 6-0. Ken and Bob Forsch, who hurled a no-hitter in 1978, are the first brothers to pitch no-hit games.

1983 - Major League Baseball, ABC, and NBC agree to terms of a six-year television package worth $1.2 billion. The two networks will continue to alternate coverage of the playoffs, World Series, and All-Star Game through the 1989 season with each of the 26 clubs receiving $7 million per year in return. The last package gave each club $1.9 million per.

1984 - Tigers right-hander Jack Morris no-hits the White Sox 4-0 at Comiskey Park, walking six and striking out eight.

1986 - On Opening Day at Tiger Stadium, Boston's Dwight Evans achieves a major league first by hitting a home run off Jack Morris on the first pitch of the entire season. Detroit's Kirk Gibson later hits two home runs of his own to lead the Tigers to a 6-5 victory.

1987 - Atlanta's Rick Mahler ties the N.L. record with his third Opening Day shutout. He beat the Phils 6-0 on three hits.

1996 - N.L. umpire Eric Gregg is given a leave of absence following a Sunday night meeting between A.L. president Gene Budig, N.L. president Len Coleman, and umpires union head Richie Phillips. Gregg, listed at 325 pounds but visibly heavier, makes the decision in the wake of John McSherry's sudden death during a game.

1998 - On the same day that major league baseball returned to Wisconsin 28 years earlier, National League baseball returned to Milwaukee for the first time in 32 years. It's a complicated story with a happy ending: The Milwaukee Braves were an N.L. team that moved to Atlanta in 1966 the Seattle Pilots, who formed as an A.L. West expansion team in 1969, moved to Milwaukee and played their first game as the Brewers on April 7, 1970. Five years after their team owner became commissioner of baseball, the Brewers became an N.L. club. And on this day they were 6-4 winners over the Expos in their home opener.

PROJECTED SCORE: 93 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Key Injuries - F Carl Landry (calf) is OUT.
F Tracy McGrady (knee) is OUT.

Rays: James Shields will toe the rubber for Tampa Bay knowing he will be pitching for the defending AL champions. “Teams aren’t taking us too lightly any more,” Shields said. “There’s a long of teams around the league that have a lot more respect for us. Teams aren’t coming in thinking they’re going to beat us every time. I think I saw that starting the second half of last season.” Shields is 2-4 lifetime vs. Boston with a 5.23 ERA.

Red Sox (-140, O/U 8.5): Boston ace Josh Beckett hopes to put a rough season behind him and will be looking for consistency after throwing well early on only to falter in the middle of games. "The thing that bothers me most about it is you feel like you've made good adjustments, and then the results end up being poor," Beckett said. "It's frustrating when people come up to you and say you did a good job of this or that, things you were trying to make adjustments on, but the results, like I said, it takes a day to get over that."
