          Six-pack for Saturday

-- Ichiro Suzuki has a bleeding ulcer, starts the season on the DL.

-- Absolutely no idea what the Mets will do with Gary Sheffield, who seems better suited to be a DH than play for a NL team.

-- Chicago Blackhawks clinched their first NHL playoff berth in the last seven years, so good for them.

-- Oregon State made 12-19 from the arc, upset UTEP 81-73 in the championship game of second annual CBI tournament in El Paso.

-- Giants cut Plaxico Burress Friday; how would you like to be his agent? Burress has lost a fortune to stupidity; what a nitwit.

-- Very early returns from Citi Field show a pitchers' park, but it is way too soon to form a definitive opinion; one thing is obvious- the outfield at Citi Field is huge-- you'll need fast outfielders there.

          ----------------------------------------------------------------------

          Late Night Update

-- Dana Eveland allowed three hits in six IP as A's beat Giants 2-1.

-- Nomar Garciaparra is batting .455 for Oakland this spring.

-- Yovani Gallardo shut the Dodgers out for five innings; Brewers won 7-2 at Dodger Stadium.

-- Sacramento Kings lost 139-111 in Phoenix, have now allowed 282 points in their last two games. Just a terrible team.

Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

            13) Want to win a bar bet? David DeJesus led major leagues, hitting .419 with runners in scoring position. Ian Kinsler was next, at .413.

            12) Johan Santana, Paul Maholm tied for major league lead, with nine quality starts in their no-decisions.

            11) In 2008, Pirates were 12-2 when they hit 3+ homers. 13-14 when they hit two, 23-31 with one, 19-48 with none; they were only major league team with a losing record when they hit two homers in a game.

            10) Pirates did have a 12-6 record in extra innings, best in baseball.

            9) Pirates have a new pitching coach, highly respected Joe Kerrigan, whose main student figures to be Ian Snell, who had only 16 innings last year with 10 or less pitches thrown, compared to 55 innings with 20+ pitches. Snell has some talent, but hasn't harnessed it yet.

            8) Last year's Oakland A's scored least runs of any AL team since the 2003 Tigers; their 9th place hitters reached base more than the guys in the #1 spot, which gives you an idea of how putrid they were.

            7) None of Oakland's four regular infielders hit more than .237.

            6) There were some bright spots for the A's; reliever Ziegler induced 20 ground ball double plays in just 59.2 IP, which is hard to do.

            5) Justin Duchscherer is really good when he isn't hurt; batters hit .211 against him LY, and had on-base %age of .268, which was better than Roy Halladay's numbers. His ERA of 2.541 was just a little but worse than Cliff Lee's 2.539. Problem is, he gets hurt a lot.

            4) Duchscherer started 146 innings LY, and got the side out in order 74 times, making him the only starting pitchers with 20+ starts who got 1-2-3 innings in more than 50% of the innings they started.

            3) Phillies gave Joe Blanton 5.68 runs per start last season.

            2) Temperature forecast for Opening Day in Cincinnati? 42. Yikes.

            1) Bronx Bombers have a new slogan, "Greatness has a new home", but they're not telling anyone that new home is St Petersburg, where the American League champ Tampa Bay Rays play home games.
