    Daily Sports Roundup

    Saturday, April 4

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Final Four tips off at Detroit's Ford Field with Villanova meeting North Carolina, and Michigan State taking on Connecticut.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

It's Orlando at Atlanta on Saturday night in a battle between two of the top teams in the NBA's Eastern Conference. That pair of Southeast Division rivals last met on January 9, when the Magic cruised to a 121-87 home win as a 5-point favorite. The teams last took to the court in Atlanta just a couple days earlier on January 7, with Orlando taking that decision as well (106-102 as a 2-point 'dog).

Philadelphia will host Detroit in another key Eastern matchup on Saturday, while it'll be Toronto at New York, New Jersey at Chicago, Miami at Washington, Memphis at Milwaukee, and the Clippers at Denver. The Nuggets picked up their 50th victory of the season on Thursday night against the Jazz, winning 114-104.

Winding down the Big Dance . . .

The Final Four gets started with Michigan State vs. Connecticut at 6:07pm ET at Ford Field on Saturday. The Spartans impressed with a 64-52 win over top-seeded Louisville in the Elite Eight last weekend, but they're still listed as 4-point underdogs against the Huskies (with the total at 133.5 points). UConn got past Missouri 82-75 in their quarterfinal game, with Kemba Walker scoring 23 points. Hasheem Thabeet scored just five points in that win, but grabbed 13 rebounds.

Villanova will then take on North Carolina at approximately 8:47pm ET to decide the other tournament finalist. The Wildcats also knocked off a top seed to get to Detroit; they edged Pittsburgh 78-76 in the Elite Eight on 28 points from Sam Young and late heroics from Scottie Reynolds. The Tar Heels dispatched Oklahoma 72-60 last time out, with Ty Lawson scoring 19 points in that win. The oddsmakers have UNC favored by 7 points on Saturday, with the total at 158.5.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The Bruins and their newly-wealthy starting goaltender will take to the ice at home on Saturday afternoon for a game against the Rangers. Boston netminder Tim Thomas has inked a big new contract, and he and his team will be looking to stay on a roll as they cruise into the postseason as the top seed in the East. The Rangers dropped a key game to the Canes by a final score of 4-2 on Thursday night, and they're just trying to stay in the top eight of the conference standings.

The rest of the NHL's Saturday action will take place in the evening, and the slate includes New Jersey at Buffalo, Montreal at Toronto, Pittsburgh at Carolina, Philadelphia at Ottawa, Tampa Bay at the Islanders, St. Louis at Dallas, Columbus at Nashville, Anaheim at San Jose, Phoenix at Los Angeles, and Vancouver at Edmonton. A late surge has pushed the Canucks into contention for first place in the Northwest Division; they lost in OT to the Ducks on Thursday.

      NCAAB
      Write-up

      Saturday's games

Huge crowd in Detroit's Ford Field should be pro-Spartan (only 75 miles away). Since 1999, #1 seeds are 8-3 SU when facing a lower seed in the national semifinals; UConn starts three seniors with 7-3 junior Thabeet, who is huge force on defense, especially against team that doesn't shoot a lot of 3's (Michigan State scores 22% of points from arc). Huskies are 3-0 vs Big 11 teams, winning by 19 over Wisconsin, 8 vs Michigan, 12 against Purdue. Spartans just beat Louisville, beat team in Big East; they lost by 35 to North Carolina in this building Dec 3rd. State starts pair of seniors-- Suton will try to draw Thabeet from hoop with jumpers.

In six of last seven Final Fours, there was an upset in one of the semis. North Carolina is 1-5 in national semifinal games since '95-- they were a favorite in five of the six games. Tar Heels are 2-0 vs Big East, winning by 22 vs Rutgers, by 15 over Notre Dame- they start three juniors, two seniors and don't utilize the bench as much as previous Carolina teams. Villanova ranks 23rd in the country in % of points scored from foul line; they're still a young team (only one senior starter). Tar Heels played in this building in December, waxing Michigan State by 35. Villanova beat Duke by 23, in its only game this season against an ACC opponent.

      Tips and Trends

Final Four: #2 Michigan State vs. #1 Connecticut [CBS | 6:07 PM ET]

Michigan State: The Spartans are definitely the sentimental favorites to win the national title in nearby Detroit, especially after knocking off #1 overall seed Louisville in the Elite 8. Around 30,000 fans attended their practice on Friday, giving them confidence that they will have home-court advantage. “We’re trying to put smiles on people’s faces,” said Michigan State point guard Kalin Lucas, a Detroit native. “We have the city on our back and we’re going to come out tomorrow and we’re going to make sure we hold it down for the Motor City.”

Michigan State is 6-2 ATS in its last 8 Saturday games.
The UNDER is 11-4 in Michigan State's last 15 games overall.

      Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 67 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

UConn (-4, O/U 134): The Huskies have proven many doubters wrong in the Big Dance, covering every game with ease en route to the Final Four. They have been hit with allegations of possible recruiting violations while head coach Jim Calhoun has been dealing with his third diagnosis of cancer. Still, UConn remains on track to play for its third national title in 10 years. “This team has given me incredible joy this season,” Calhoun said. “They were the tonic, quite frankly, the best medicine I could ever possibly receive.”

UConn is 4-0 ATS its last 4 games overall.
The OVER is 7-1 in UConn's last 8 NCAA tournament games.

Key Injuries - F Jeff Adrien (knee) is probable.
C Hasheem Thabeet (finger) is probable.
G Jerome Dyson (knee) is doubtful.

      PROJECTED SCORE: 70

Final Four: #3 Villanova vs. #1 North Carolina [CBS | 8:47 PM ET]

Villanova: No team has been more impressive in the NCAA tournament than the Wildcats, who have beaten such perennial powers as UCLA, Duke and Pittsburgh en route to the Final Four. Some bettors are still waiting for their magical ride to end, as there are still doubts that this team has the same chemistry as the team that won the national title after shooting 78.6 percent against Georgetown in 1985. “Our players believe they can win,” Villanova head coach Jay Wright said. “We use a term, ‘We don’t have to play perfect, we just have to play together.’ That’s how we’re going to play, and our guys believe we’re going to win that way.”

Villanova is 16-3 SU in its last 19 games overall.
The UNDER is 9-2 in Villanova's last 11 non-conference games.

Key Injuries - G Scottie Reynolds (thumb) is probable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 77 (Side Play of the Day)

North Carolina (-7, O/U 158.5): The Tar Heels will be looking to atone for last year's poor performance in the Final Four, when eventual national champ Kansas jumped out to a 40-12 lead and never looked back. Four NBA prospects chose to return this year just to win the NCAA title, including preseason National Player of the Year Tyler Hans-brough. “It was our first Final Four,” Hans-brough said. “Now, I guess we’ll be more prepared.” Hans-brough and his teammates better hope so because another loss will leave them subject to major disappointment once again.

North Carolina is 4-0 ATS in its last 4 games overall.
The UNDER is 4-1 in North Carolina's last 5 games overall.

      Key Injuries - NONE

      PROJECTED SCORE: 81

Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA best bets
            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Raptors at New York Knicks (-2, 218)

It must be tough for losing teams to stay motivated down the stretch. While the Toronto Raptors don't appear to be giving up, the New York Knicks just don't seem to have enough depth to stay competitive.

Coming off one of their biggest victories of the season, the Raptors look to win six straight for the first time in over two years as they kick off a home-and-home series with the banged-up Knicks on Saturday afternoon.

Toronto (29-45) is virtually out of playoff contention in the Eastern Conference, trailing eighth-place Chicago by six games with eight to play. New York (29-46) and Washington (18-59) are the only teams that have a worse record than the Raptors in the conference.

Still, Toronto has managed to put together its longest run of the season and has a chance for its first six-game winning streak since Feb. 4-15, 2007. Though the Raptors are far out of the playoff picture, they're still playing as though they have a chance.

"It's not bittersweet. It's not over," All-Star forward Chris Bosh said. "It's not over yet. We're going to keep playing, see what happens. We still have a chance."

Bosh had 24 points to lead the Raptors to a 99-95 win over East powerhouse Orlando on Wednesday night, making a 22-footer with 29 seconds left that put the game out of reach.

Toronto is playing loose and intends to finish the season strong.

            Pick: Toronto +2

Los Angeles Clippers at Denver Nuggets (N/A)

The Nuggets have three wins at the Clippers' expense this season. Denver needed overtime to pull out a 113-103 road victory Oct. 31, then outlasted Los Angeles 106-105 on Nov. 26. Smith scored 17 points off the bench in Denver's 107-94 home win March 14.

The Nuggets' stars, however, have had their problems against the Clippers. Carmelo Anthony has scored 24.0 points per game in two games against them, but he's been held to 14-for-37 shooting from the field (37.8 percent).

Los Angeles has also done a good job containing Chauncey Billups, who's averaged 8.5 points and shot 25.0 percent (4-for-16) in two games.

The Clippers (18-57) have had a hard time trying to stop opponents lately. They've given up 107.1 points per game in losing 14 of their last 17, including a 104-98 home loss to New Orleans on Wednesday night.

Buoyed by the return of point guard Baron Davis from a two-game absence, the Clippers shot 50.0 percent. But they allowed the Hornets to shoot 53.1 percent.

Los Angeles might have an easier time keeping up with Denver if Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin can't play. Martin, who just recently returned to full health after dealing with a bad back for a month, left Thursday's game with a cartilage strain in his left rib cage. X-rays were negative.

Martin, who didn't know how he got hurt, said he was in a lot of pain after the game and wasn't sure if he'll be able to play Saturday. Karl hopes Martin's absence is brief.

"I like challenges but I would prefer to be healthy," Karl said. "I think 'Melo's getting healthier and everybody seemed to be on the route of getting healthier and had more bounce in their step. I'm hoping this is just a few-day injury and not much more than that."

This will be the second game in Denver for Clippers center Marcus Camby, who spend the last six seasons with the Nuggets. Camby had 11 points and seven rebounds in his first game back March 14.

            Pick: Los Angeles

                  Ice Picks: NHL best bets
                  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Rangers at Boston Bruins (-181, 5.5)

The Boston Bruins may have regained their swagger just in time for a run at their first Stanley Cup in 37 years. With one more point, they will secure the top seed in the Eastern Conference.

They also wouldn't mind sending a message to the team that could await them in the first round.

The Bruins look to extend their winning streak to six Saturday afternoon against the visiting New York Rangers, who are still clawing for one of the conference's final playoff spots.

Boston (50-17-10) already has its first 50-win season in 16 years, and is now on the verge of clinching home-ice advantage throughout the East playoffs just two years removed from missing the postseason. Its lead over second-place Washington is eight points, and the Capitals have four games left.

"You can play for one team your whole career and never get 50 wins - and still have some real good seasons," goalie Tim Thomas said. "It's a credit to the team, the way it's built and the way the guys play together.

"But if you're running the Boston Marathon and you're leading after 20 miles, you don't stop to say, 'Man, I'm leading.'"

The Bruins had been embroiled in a 6-9-4 funk before their current winning streak, which has been sparked by superior special teams play. They're 7-for-17 on the power play in the last five games, while killing 18 of 19 penalties.

                  Pick: Boston -181

Pittsburgh Penguins at Carolina Hurricanes (-120, 6)

Carolina set the record with Thursday's 4-2 win over the New York Rangers to surpass the mark set in 2005-06 - when it went on to win the franchise's first Stanley Cup. The Hurricanes haven't been to the playoffs since but that looks like it's going to change.

"We've got to keep this train rolling," said center Eric Staal, who had a goal and an assist against the Rangers.

Chad LaRose and Rod Brind'Amour scored 28 seconds apart in the third period Thursday for Carolina, which is on its longest win streak since reeling off nine in a row in 2005-06.

Goalie Cam Ward, who won the Conn Smythe Trophy for the 2006 playoffs, has been instrumental to Carolina's success, making 25 consecutive starts. He made 36 saves Thursday and is 17-6-2 with a 2.29 GAA and two shutouts since his last day off.

Although Ward has been a staple in Carolina's net for the past two months, he has only made one start against the Penguins this season, stopping 32 shots in a 2-1 victory on Jan. 20. He is 8-3-1 with a 2.47 GAA lifetime versus Pittsburgh.

The Hurricanes have three more games at the RBC Center before wrapping up the regular season next Saturday in New Jersey.

                  Pick: Carolina -120
