        Ice Picks: NHL best bets
        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ottawa Senators at Florida Panthers (-145, 5.5)

The Florida Panthers got a couple of much needed road wins last week to help them stay in the playoff hunt. After an 0-2-1 slump, Florida beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-2 Thursday and then defeated the Dallas Stars 6-3 Saturday night helping them move within one point of the Montréal Canadiens for the eighth and final playoff spot in the East.

“We wanted to get two of three on this trip, and we got them,” Panthers head coach Peter DeBoer told reporters. “We’ve got three home games and we’ve got to take care of business. Hopefully at the end of the day we’ll look up and be in [the playoffs].”

The Panthers will play four of their last six games at home starting with tonight’s contest against the Ottawa Senators. The Senators have little hope of making the playoffs sitting in 11th place and 10 points behind the Habs. But this doesn’t mean the Senators aren’t playing to win.

Ottawa has won seven of its last 10 games including a 3-0 victory over the Lightning Sunday night. Goalie Brian Elliott’s first shutout win was even sweeter since it came less than 24 hours after giving up four goals on 21 shots to the Atlanta Thrashers.

“I really didn’t feel I played too bad [in Atlanta]. It’s a case where the whole team was a little off and it looks bad on the goalie. Having the chance to redeem myself was definitely what I wanted.”

Look for the Senators to make things difficult for the Panthers.

        Pick: Senators

Nashville Predators at Columbus Blue Jackets (-155, 5.5)

The Nashville Predators have stepped up their game at just the right time. They capped off a big week with wins over the San Jose Sharks Thursday night and over the Detroit Red Wings Sunday night placing them in the seventh spot in the Western Conference with six games remaining on the schedule.

“We’re in the fight of our lives,” Steve Sullivan, who racked up one goal and one assist in Nashville’s 4-3 win over Detroit, told reporters. “We’ve still got a lot of work to do.”

They will have another tough game against the sixth-place Columbus Blue Jackets. Columbus wasn’t as successful Sunday falling 5-2 to the St. Louis Blues. Goaltender Steve Mason made a costly mistake when he tried to clear the puck down the ice and instead handed it to Brad Boyes who fired it into the net giving the Blues a 2-1 lead.

“That was probably the turning point,” Mason said. “If you’re trying to pinpoint the play that made us lose the game, that was it.”

Mason, who has been extraordinary all year and is the main reason the Blue Jackets are in playoff contention, will want to make up for Sunday’s mishap.

        Pick: Blue Jackets

NIT Semifinals: Baylor vs. San Diego State [ESPN2 | 7 PM ET]

Baylor (-1, O/U 136): The Bears didn't reach their ultimate goal of playing in the Big Dance back-to-back years, but they have still thrived this postseason in winning six of seven games, starting with the Big 12 conference tourney. The only loss during that stretch came to Missouri in the Big 12 title game, and senior Curtis Jerrells has been focused on finishing his career strong after starting out with a team that played just a half-season as a freshman following the shooting death of Patrick Dennehy. “I’ll tell you this, I would want another year if we hadn’t made the NIT and played like we did in the Big 12 tournament,” said Jerrells.

Baylor is 5-2 ATS in its last 7 games overall.
The UNDER is 12-3-1 in Baylor's last 16 games overall.

Key Injuries - G LaceDarius Dunn (shin) is probable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 66 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

San Diego State: Aztecs head coach Steve Fisher caught lightning in a bottle 20 years ago when he led Michigan to its last NCAA basketball title, and he knows his team this year was deserving of making it to the NCAA tournament. "We’ve had a good team all year," Fisher said. "We felt like we can play with anybody. We were disappointed we didn’t get into the NCAA, yet determined that we were going to play well in the NIT, and we’ve done that. We’re going to play on a national stage in a historic, prestigious building in New York City, and it’s got all of us excited. If we can go in and win two games, I think it will be a major, major accomplishment for this program.”

San Diego State is 6-1 ATS in its last 7 games overall.
The UNDER is 7-1 in San Diego State's last 8 neutral site games.

                    Key Injuries - NONE

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 65

NIT Semifinals: Notre Dame vs. Penn State [ESPN2 | 9 PM ET]

Notre Dame (-4, O/U 138): The Fighting Irish were one of the most disappointing teams in college basketball this past season, as Luke Harangody and Kyle McAlarney were supposed to lead them into the NCAA tournament. Instead, they struggled in the Big East but have enjoyed a second life in the NIT. Notre Dame is coming off a 77-67 win over Kentucky last Wednesday night in their final game of the year at the Joyce Center and return to Madison Square Garden for the third time this season after losing to St. John's there and bowing out of the Big East tournament. "We're extremely excited and we're looking to cut down the nets there in the Garden, so it's not over yet," said McAlarney.

Notre Dame is 7-14 ATS in its last 21 games overall.
The UNDER is 8-1 in Notre Dame's last 9 games overall.

Key Injuries - F Zach Hillesland (shoulder) is probable.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 68

Penn State: Like all of the last four teams standing in the NIT, the Nittany Lions felt like they deserved to be playing in the Big Dance. Still, they are making the most of their chance to finish their season with a championship victory. “I don’t know if you can really compare it to the NCAAs - that was a big goal for us,” Penn State senior forward Jamelle Cornley said. “But from a senior standpoint, if you’re not going to end your career in the NCAA tournament, what better way to go out than in Madison Square Garden?”

Penn State is 4-1 SU in its last 5 games overall.
The OVER is 5-2 in Penn State's last 7 games overall.

                    Key Injuries - NONE

                      Tuesday's best NIT bets

Baylor Bears vs. San Diego State Aztecs (pick, 135)

The Baylor Bears' performance in the NIT has many people wondering how the talented program would have done in the big dance. The Bears are playing their best basketball after an inspired run in the Big 12 tournament. They've taken back-to-back road wins to advance to the semifinals in New York.

On any given night, Baylor can have five or six players in double figures on the score sheet. Against Auburn in the quarterfinals, Kevin Rogers, Curtis Jerrells, LaceDarius Dunn and Tweety Carter combined for 63 of the team's 75 total points. And against Virginia Tech in the second round, Baylor had all five starters and reserve Henry Dugat toss in 10 or more points.

"They've gone on the road to Blacksburg and won, and I mean, they dominated Virginia Tech," Aztecs coach Steve Fisher told the Union-Tribune. "Then, to go on the road to Auburn, Ala., and beat Auburn. With everybody else they've beaten and they gave Missouri a good game, too it's all so impressive what Baylor's done.

"They're playing really good basketball. But so are we."

San Diego State hasn't faced a team as deep as the Bears this postseason. The Aztecs were able to limit the damage from St. Mary's Patty Mills, KSU's Denis Clemente and Weber State's Kellen McCoy in the first three rounds but will have a hard time keeping track of Baylor's talent. Even with the 12th ranked defense in the country, SDSU is bound to let one or two players slip through the cracks.

                      Pick: Baylor

Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. Penn State Nittany Lions (+4, 139.5)

It was just a few weeks ago that the Fighting Irish fell to West Virginia at Madison Square Garden. Notre Dame was taken apart by the Mountaineers' arsenal of scoring threats who, despite a poor shooting day, rained 33 points from beyond the arc.

Notre Dame's defense has been in question all year and is the main reason why the program is competing in the NIT and not the NCAA tournament.

The Nittany Lions are 27-for-64 from beyond the arc in the NIT and are shooting almost 48 percent for the tournament. Leading scorer Taylor Battle will be rebounding from a poor shooting night in Gainesville the game before. He's averaged more than 17 points in the tournament but went 1-for-8 from 3-point range against Florida.

Penn State assistant coach Lewis Preston knows Notre Dame all too well. He was once an assistant at South Bend for six years and helped with the recruiting of star center Luke Harangody. Preston's knowledge of the Gators, another former team, helped the Lions advance to the semifinals.

The Nittany Lions should also have a slight home-court advantage Tuesday. Around 20 buses are headed to the Big Apple from Happy Valley and will be in a frenzy following a pep rally in the MSG lobby before the game.

                      Pick: PSU +4
