    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, March 31

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Lakers take on the Bobcats in Charlotte, the Habs host the Hawks, and the NIT semifinals get underway in New York City.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

Kobe Bryant and the Lakers will be looking to get in the way of the Bobcats' playoff aspirations on Tuesday night when the two teams collide in Charlotte. The Lakers, who are cruising to the top overall seed in the Western Conference, fell 86-76 in Atlanta on Sunday, with Bryant scoring just 17 points. The Bobcats are looking to catch the Pistons or Bulls for eighth place in the Eastern standings, and they helped their cause Saturday by picking up a 96-85 win over the Knicks.

There are eight other games on the NBA's schedule for Tuesday, including Detroit at Cleveland and Chicago at Indiana. As well, it'll be Atlanta at Philadelphia, Dallas at Minnesota, Oklahoma City at San Antonio, New York at Denver, New Orleans at Sacramento, and Utah at Portland. The Jazz and Trail Blazers are both looking to catch Denver for first place in the Northwest Division.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The race for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference continues on Tuesday night as Montreal hosts Chicago and Florida gets a visit from Ottawa. The Canadiens fell 4-3 in overtime to the Sabres on Saturday, but at least managed to pick up one point in the standings. The Panthers knocked off Dallas 6-3 on Saturday, and they now trail the Canadiens by one point for eighth place.

It's Nashville at Columbus, Vancouver at Minnesota, and Anaheim at Edmonton in the key Western Conference clashes on the National Hockey League schedule for Tuesday night as those teams scramble to get into postseason position down the stretch. As well, East-leading Boston will play host to Tampa Bay, and the fading Stars will be looking for some signs of life when they travel to Los Angeles.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The National Invitational Tournament stages its semifinal round at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night, with Baylor vs. San Diego State and Notre Dame vs. Penn State. Baylor edged Auburn 74-72 in the quarterfinals, while San Diego State got past St. Mary's 70-66; the Bears are 1-point favorites on Tuesday with the total at 136 points. Notre Dame knocked off Kentucky 77-67 last round, and Penn State rolled past Florida 71-62; the oddsmakers have the Fighting Irish pegged as 4-point favorites, with the game's total now at 138 points.

As well, the championship game of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament will take place on Tuesday night, with Old Dominion at Bradley. The Braves got past Pacific 59-49 in the semifinal round of the tournament, and the oddsmakers have them listed as a slim 1-point favorite in the championship game (with the total at 127.5 points). The Monarchs are coming off an 81-43 win over James Madison.

      Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Virginia signed Tony Bennett as basketball coach, excellent hire. Not a good day for Washington State, though.

-- 22,397 turned out Sunday for first-ever ballgame at Citi Field, the Mets' new stadium; Georgetown beat St John's, for the record.

-- Oakland A's beat the Las Vegas over/under win total posted for them in seven of the last eight seasons.

-- Villanova coach Jay Wright worked as an administrative aide for the USFL's Philadelphia Stars, way back in 1983.

-- Memphis has won 61 Conference USA hoop games in a row; how happy will the other 11 coaches be if Calipari bolts for Kentucky?

-- Underrated stat: Tom Izzo, five Final Fours in last eleven years.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA best bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dallas Mavericks at Minnesota Timberwolves (N/A)

The Mavs stunk up the joint Sunday (at least in the second half) in Cleveland but caught a break when the Phoenix Suns lost to the lowly Sacramento Kings. Phoenix’s setback meant Dallas was able to maintain its 3.5-game lead over the Suns for the final playoff spot in the West.

There’s a chance that Dallas might get back Josh Howard for this contest. Coach Rick Carlisle said the team’s third-leading scorer is getting closer to a return to action for the first time since March 5. But Carlisle added that Ryan Hollins will continue to be one of the first big men off the bench even when Howard is back.

"(Hollins) does things very decisively out there," Carlisle said to reporters. "He brings a positive vibe to our team. He’s earning the minutes that he’s getting."

Dallas, which has lost four of its past five road games, might face a Minnesota team missing its best perimeter threat. Combo guard Randy Foye seems likely to sit this one out after not playing Sunday. The Mavs have covered their past five in the Twin Cities and are 2-0 (1-1 ATS) against Minnesota this year.

                Pick: Dallas

Utah Jazz at Portland Trail Blazers (-6.5, 194)

The Blazers enter this one well-rested and off back-to-back 20-point home wins over Phoenix and Memphis.

Portland’s magic number for clinching its first playoff spot since 2003 is four with nine games left. The club is 30-7 at home, making it the third Blazers team in franchise history to register 30 wins at the Rose Garden in one season. They can become the first to win 31 on Tuesday.

Utah will be playing the second of a back-to-back after hosting the hosting the Knicks Monday night. Portland, which is a season-high 19 games over .500, is 19-4 against teams in that scenario. The Blazers also have covered the past five against Utah at home.

Portland is 1-2 against the Jazz this season, with that one win coming by 14 points at home.

                Pick: Portland

                        NIT
Interesting contrast in styles; Baylor (13th in offensive efficiency) likes to score the ball, San Diego State (20th on defense) is a terrific defensive team; Aztecs won eight of last nine games, losing only by hoop to Utah in MWC final- they beat Kansas State of Big 12 70-52 in second round, holding Wildcats to 31.7% from floor. Baylor starts three seniors; they won five of last six games since horrible 2-10 skid to end its conference season. Bears are 14-2 outside of conference play.

Notre Dame won three home games to get back to New York, where it lost 74-62 to West Virginia in second round of Big East tourney three weeks ago. Irish split pair vs Big 11 teams, beating doormat Indiana by 38 in Maui, then losing by five to Ohio State two weeks later. Penn St. is 8-3 in last 11 games, with wins at Illinois, Florida. Irish start pair of seniors and three juniors, but don't sub much. Nittany Lions start three sophs and a pair of seniors.

                        CIT
Bradley won five of last six games, but covered just two of last seven; one win was in double OT vs Drake, another on 70-foot heave at horn to nip Oakland. Braves won their last six home games. Old Dominion won nine of last ten games, losing to VCU in CAA semis by 8; they won four of last five road games, but haven't been on foreign soil since winning in OT Feb 28 at Northeastern. Both side have one senior starter.
