Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA loads up with 11 games on the schedule for Wednesday night, including an East/West clash between the Spurs and Hawks in Atlanta. San Antonio and Atlanta last met on December 10 in Texas, with the Spurs pulling out a 95-89 home victory as a 6.5-point favorite. Those two teams last played back on March 8, with Orlando pulling out an 86-79 road victory as a 2-point underdog.

    A break from the Madness . . .

The NIT, CBI, and CollegeInsider.com postseason tournaments all offer up games on Wednesday night as a prelude to Thursday's Sweet 16 action. In the NIT on Wednesday it'll be quarterfinal matchups between San Diego State and St. Mary's, and Notre Dame and Kentucky, with the winners of those games heading to the semifinals on March 31. The championship game will be April 2.

Meanwhile, the CBI and CollegeInsider.com events will both stage their semifinal rounds on Wednesday night. In the CBI semifinals it'll be Stanford vs. Oregon State and Richmond vs. UTEP, with the championship of the tournament a three-game series on March 30, April 1, and April 3 (if necessary). Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The National Hockey League offers up a half-dozen games on Wednesday night, including the Sharks on the road in Chicago. Those Western Conference contenders last met on January 31, when the Blackhawks rolled to a 4-2 road win. Also on the NHL's schedule for Wednesday: Florida at Buffalo, Ottawa at Carolina, Minnesota at the Islanders, Calgary at Pittsburgh, and Anaheim at Colorado. Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

        13) Bad news for NFL fans who don't have DirecTV; they just made a deal with NFL that pays the league $1B a year from 2011-14, and still pays off, even if the NFL has a lockout in 2011, which it might.

        12) Someone please explain to me why Korea pitched to Ichiro in the 10th inning Monday night, with men on 2nd/3rd and two out, score tied. Other than Pete Rose, Mr Suzuki might be the greatest singles hitter ever-- pitching to him was plain stupid, even if it would have worked, which it didn't.

        11) Oriental teams obviously are very good at baseball, but they have some odd ideas; Sunday night, up two runs in 8th inning, Americans have guy on 3rd and one out, and Japan brings the infield in. Why?? Major league manager does that, he might get fired the next day.

        10) Tennessee hooper Wayne Chism scored 11 points in 28 minutes in Vols' loss to Oklahoma State Friday, which doesn't seem like much of a game, then you hear the kid played with a broken left thumb, so he is pretty tough. Had to hurt like hell every time he touched ball.

        9) Florida Marlins finally got their new stadium approved, on site of the old Orange Bowl in Little Havana; a $515M stadium with one of those retractable roofs for rainy days. Now Jeffrey Loria, time for the club to start spending money and acting like you want to win.

        8) Thats right, the new stadium in Miami will have a roof on it, but a new stadium in Minneapolis, where it is cold until mid-June, will not. Go figure.

        7) You watch the Baylor Bears cut through the NIT field, and there are five other Big 12 teams in the Sweet 16, and maybe that league is a little underrated, while maybe the ACC was somewhat overrated.

        6) Baylor won at Auburn Tuesday because the Tigers can't make one foul shot on their home court with 0:08 left. Tough loss for team that played really well down stretch- they deserved better.

        5) NFL players are against changing the overtime rules, to allow both teams a possession in the extra period. Some media people have been pushing for new rules, but they ain't going to happen.

        4) NFL games on Thanksgiving Day: Packers at Lions, then for some odd reason, the Raiders at Dallas, and the Giants are out in Denver.

        3) Liberty's Seth Curry, younger brother of Davidson's Stephen, will transfer from Liberty to play at a higher level. Pretty big blow for one of the Big South's better programs.

        2) Sign of the times: Went to work wothout my cellphone today, and felt like I left my shoes home. Funny how you get attached to things.

        1) Labor Day is September 7 this year, as late as it can be, so start of the NFL season is September 13, as late as it can be. There will be a single game on the 10th, but the first NFL Sunday is the 13th.

Boston Celtics at Orlando Magic [ESPN | 8 PM ET]

Celtics: Boston is bringing All-Star forward Kevin Garnett back slowly from a knee injury, something that might be the difference against Orlando's Dwight Howard. Garnett would like to play more, but head coach Doc Rivers also needs to make sure he is healthy as the Celtics begin to defend their NBA title in about a month. “It’s very tough,” Garnett said. “The reasons why when I’m out I’m not out there on the bench is because I might jump out there in street clothes and start hooping. One of the hardest things for me is to sit down. My teammates will tell you it’s not easy being hurt, especially for me.”

Celtics are 3-11 ATS in their last 14 games overall.
The UNDER is 19-8 in Boston's last 27 road games.

Key Injuries - F Leon Powe (knee) is OUT.

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Magic (-3.5, O/U 191.5): Orlando trails Boston by just one game for the second playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, something head coach Stan Van Gundy believes is an important goal for his team. “No question,” Van Gundy said. “Homecourt, I think it’s huge. Every day, you’re playing for something.” Earning the #2 seed in the East would result in homecourt advantage for a second-round playoff series between the teams, and the Magic can also win their second straight Atlantic Division title with a victory on Wednesday. “We look at it all the time,” Orlando's Rashard Lewis said. “The most important part is we’re right on the tail of Boston and we’re trying to catch them. I think the farther we move up the better off we’ll be having homecourt advantage.”

Favorite is 2-6 ATS in the last 8 meetings.
The UNDER is 5-0 in Orlando's last 5 games overall.

Key Injuries - G Jameer Nelson (shoulder) is OUT.

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Utah Jazz at Phoenix Suns [ESPN | 10:30 PM ET]

                Jazz:

Road team is 7-2 ATS in the last 9 meetings.
The UNDER is 9-2 in Utah's last 11 games overall.

                Key Injuries - NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

                Suns (-3.5, O/U 231):

Suns are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
The OVER is 20-7 in Phoenix's last 27 Wednesday games.

Key Injuries - G Leandro Barbosa (knee) is OUT.
F Amare Stoudemire (eye) is OUT.

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA best bets
                  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Charlotte Bobcats at Washington Wizards (NA)

The Bobcats are fresh off an embarrassing 25-point home setback to the Indiana Pacers, but are just one-game back of the eighth-seed Chicago Bulls.

Prior to Saturday’s thumping, the Bobcats had been strong ATS play. They are 3-1 ATS in their last four, including a 13-point road victory over the Toronto Raptors.

“The way we ended that game, the way we played vs. Toronto, we’ve got to play every night like that from here out,” Bobcats guard Raymond Felton told reporters.

Felton is right; his club can’t afford to drop a game to the lowly Wizards if it hopes to snatch the eighth-seed from the Bulls.

“If we want to be a playoff team we are going to have to play little bit better,” Bobcats forward Vladimir Radmanovic told reporters.”

The Bobcats are 4-0 ATS in their last four tilts against Washington.

                  Pick: Bobcats

Milwaukee Bucks at Toronto Raptors (-3, 200.5)

Toronto has had a disappointing season and is out of the playoff hunt but it should step up against the Bucks.

The Raptors are just 12-21-1 at home but are 2-1 ATS in their last three home dates, including a 24-point victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

“When we come out and play the way we did it's fun," Raptors star Chris Bosh told reporters Sunday. “That’s what I think we have to get to now. We just have to have fun playing the game of basketball and the way you have fun is play defense, lock them down and run.”

Toronto was in desperate need of a victory heading into Sunday and should be hungry for another Wednesday against the Bucks, who have lost seven of their last 10.

The Bucks are just 2-8 ATS in their last 10 overall and are now two games back of the Bulls for the eighth and final playoff spot.

Milwaukee is 1-8 ATS in its last nine contests overall.

                  Pick: Raptors
