      Ice Picks: NHL best bets
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ottawa Senators at Carolina Hurricanes (-150, 5.5)

The Ottawa Senators have won nine of their past 10 games while the Carolina Hurricanes haven’t lost at home since February 17th.

Canes puck stopper Cam Ward has started 39 of the last 40 games including 22 in a row.

The Senators have turned things around as of late and leading the way is Captain Daniel Alfredsson.

"I think it's just the energy, compared to the season early on. Mentally, really more than physically, it was tougher, and there was not a lot of energy coming to the rink," Alfredsson said following Sunday's 2-1 win over the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. Alfredsson has 15 points in his last 10 outings.

Ottawa has won two of the three head-to-head meetings this season, but the Hurricanes have won 16 of 21 on home ice.

      Pick: Carolina

Florida Panthers at Buffalo Sabres (N/A)

Florida and Buffalo (outside of the weather) have a lot in common right now. The Panthers and Sabres are both in a dogfight to try and catch Montreal for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. They are also each getting back arguably their most important player for the stretch drive.

Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller skated with the team earlier this week and will be back in the line up shortly.

"My plan is to get in as quick as possible, but I really can't tell you when that's going to be," Miller said. "It's all dependent on how quickly I get myself up to speed and how my ankle reacts. You don't want to do anything too quick."

The Panthers coaching staff is happy to see team leader Nathan Horton back in action. Horton returned to the lineup on Monday night against the Hurricanes and had one assist in just under 20 minutes of ice time.

With the playoffs so close to being a reality it’s surprising to see both the Panthers and Sabres struggling as of late. Florida and Buffalo have each won just three of their last 10 games.

The Sabres have been forced to play a more wide-open game without their No. 1 goalie between the pipes and the team’s recent totals represent that. The Panthers rely on a tight, shutdown style of play. All three head-to-head tilts have finished under the total of 5.5 this year.

      Pick: Under

Boston Celtics at Orlando Magic [ESPN | 8 PM ET]

Celtics: Boston is bringing All-Star forward Kevin Garnett back slowly from a knee injury, something that might be the difference against Orlando's Dwight Howard. Garnett would like to play more, but head coach Doc Rivers also needs to make sure he is healthy as the Celtics begin to defend their NBA title in about a month. “It’s very tough,” Garnett said. “The reasons why when I’m out I’m not out there on the bench is because I might jump out there in street clothes and start hooping. One of the hardest things for me is to sit down. My teammates will tell you it’s not easy being hurt, especially for me.”

Celtics are 3-11 ATS in their last 14 games overall.
The UNDER is 19-8 in Boston's last 27 road games.

Key Injuries - F Leon Powe (knee) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 87 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Magic (-3.5, O/U 191.5): Orlando trails Boston by just one game for the second playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, something head coach Stan Van Gundy believes is an important goal for his team. “No question,” Van Gundy said. “Homecourt, I think it’s huge. Every day, you’re playing for something.” Earning the #2 seed in the East would result in homecourt advantage for a second-round playoff series between the teams, and the Magic can also win their second straight Atlantic Division title with a victory on Wednesday. “We look at it all the time,” Orlando's Rashard Lewis said. “The most important part is we’re right on the tail of Boston and we’re trying to catch them. I think the farther we move up the better off we’ll be having homecourt advantage.”

Favorite is 2-6 ATS in the last 8 meetings.
The UNDER is 5-0 in Orlando's last 5 games overall.

Key Injuries - G Jameer Nelson (shoulder) is OUT.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 90

Utah Jazz at Phoenix Suns [ESPN | 10:30 PM ET]

Jazz: Utah is coming off a 99-86 win over Houston at home on Tuesday but has struggled on the road with a 14-20 mark. In fact, the Jazz have not beaten a Western Conference opponent with a winning record on the road all season. However, they are 10-3 since Carlos Boozer returned to the lineup and an impressive 26-6 when center Mehmet Okur scores at least 19 points. Both Boozer and Okur could have big games without Amare Stoudemire defending the paint for the Suns. Utah has surprisingly won three of the last five visits to Phoenix.

Road team is 7-2 ATS in the last 9 meetings.
The UNDER is 9-2 in Utah's last 11 games overall.

                    Key Injuries - NONE

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 111

Suns (-3.5, O/U 229): Phoenix is riding a season-high five-game winning streak, averaging 126.4 points with an average margin of victory of 16 points. The Suns edged Denver 118-115 on Monday, which was the closest win over that stretch and the only game they did not cover during the winning streak. “We can always play like that when we are focused and playing the right way,” Phoenix center Shaquille O'Neal said. “We have to rely on the teams ahead of us to falter. We have to keep fighting and see what happens.”

Suns are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
The OVER is 20-7 in Phoenix's last 27 Wednesday games.

Key Injuries - G Leandro Barbosa (knee) is OUT.
F Amare Stoudemire (eye) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 118 (Side Play of the Day)

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kentucky Wildcats at Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-2.5, 144.5)

The best two-man tandems in the NIT collide in South Bend Wednesday. Both the Wildcats and Fighting Irish are driven solely by an inside-out combo.

Kentucky’s one-two punch of scoring guard Jodie Meeks and athletic big Pat Patterson has carried UK in its first two NIT tilts. They are combining for almost 40 percent of the team’s total offense this postseason.

Notre Dame’s thunder-and-lightening twosome of center Luke Harangody and shooter Kyle McAlarney are also shouldering the load for their school, netting more than 50 percent of the Irish’s postseason points.

The difference may come down to who else contributes for their team.

The Wildcats have finally got production out of junior forward Perry Stevenson, who scored a combined 23 points and grabbed a total of 14 rebounds in the opening rounds. His frontcourt mate Ramon Harris has also shown flashes of brilliance, grabbing 10 rebounds one game while dishing out eight assists in another.

"Just the flow of the game," Harris told the Lexington Herald-Leader. "I knew they were going to key on Pat and Jodie, as always, and force us to make plays."

Notre Dame’s surprise contributor has been guard Tory Jackson, who scored 16 points in the team’s win over New Mexico Thursday. He’s made up for weak performances from Ryan Ayers, who averaging just eight points during the NIT.

Kentucky has more hands on deck when it comes to supporting its dynamic duo.

                            Pick: Kentucky +2.5

St. Mary’s Gaels at San Diego State Aztecs (-3, 128.5)

If great individual matchups are your cup of tea, than the NIT is the tournament to watch.

Thursday, fans were treated to Patty Mills vs. Stephen Curry. Now, after Mills dropped 23 points and 10 assists on the Wildcats, the Gaels’ floor general faces the Aztecs’ star, Kyle Spain.

This isn’t the first time these teams have tangled. San Diego State and St. Mary’s have met three times in the past four seasons, most recently in December when the Gaels claimed a three-point victory in San Diego. Mills and Spain each scored 13 points in that contest.

“Our kids remember that we lost,” SDSU coach Steve Fisher told reporters. “Our kids know their names. They know our names. They know that they've got really good players. I guess the familiarity part will be there for both of us. I think there's mutual respect.”

The Aztecs made the mistake of focusing on Mills and forgetting about the other talent on the Gaels’ roster. Big men Omar Samhan and Diamon Simpson combined for 35 points and 19 rebounds in that win and come into Thursday’s game at the top of their game.

                            Pick: St. Mary’s +3
