    Ice Picks: NHL best bets
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Columbus Blue Jackets at Nashville Predators (N/A)

The Predators and Blue Jackets both enter Thursday night coming off high-scoring victories.

Nashville needed overtime to dispatch the Oilers 6-5 on Tuesday. The Predators have been rolling offensively scoring 23 goals in their last four games.

“It's weird," said David Legwand, who scored two goals against Edmonton and extended his goal-scoring streak to a career-best four games. "Everyone knows the season is a roller-coaster ride. It's coming at the right time. But there are still 18 games left — maybe if we could save a couple and not let as many in."

The Blue Jackets have had troubles putting the puck in the back of the net recently scoring just 10 goals in their last five games. Five of those markers came in a one-goal win over the Los Angeles Kings.

"I knew how tough this game would be," Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock said. "I know how I feel personally and the players felt 10 times worse, but we gutted it out and it was a huge two points."

A couple of interesting trends point to under. The under is 7-2 in the Blue Jacket’s last nine games against the Western Conference and 10-4 in Nashville’s last 14 games following a win.

The main reason we look to go below the total is the battle between the pipes. Steve Mason and Pekka Rinne should put on a show.

    Pick: Under

New York Rangers at New York Islanders (N/A)

All the talk in Ranger land is on Sean Avery. John Tortorella says he is willing to give Avery a fair shot.

“I haven’t coached Sean, I want to see what he’s all about. I’ve seen him play. When he’s concentrating on playing under a team concept, he’s an effective player.”

The Rangers have lost nine in a row on the road and have managed to win just one game since John Tortorella took over behind the bench.

On the other side of the Big Apple battle the Islanders have been playing some decent hockey. Yann Danis and the Isles have won back-to-back games over Buffalo and Colorado.

Danis has been superb since he took over for the injured Rick DiPietro. In his last five starts the netminder has allowed a total of just six goals.

    Pick: Under

Pick 'n' Roll: Thursday's best NBA bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dallas Mavericks at New Orleans Hornets (N/A)

New Orleans (37-22) is one game ahead of Dallas in the fight for the postseason thanks to its season-high five-game winning streak.

All-Star forward David West did his part to keep that run alive Monday night, finishing with 30 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in a 98-91 win over Philadelphia.

"I've just been trying to go out and make the initiative," said West, averaging 28.8 points and 10.4 boards during the streak. "I feel like if I play well, it gives us a better chance to win games."

Hornets coach Byron Scott knows his team still has plenty of room for improvement, but he likes what he's seen recently.

"We really haven't played our best basketball in the last five games, but we just keep finding ways to win games," Scott said. "I think we have some confidence in ourselves that when the game is on the line, we are able to get things done to win the game."

The Hornets delivered when it counted in their only previous meeting with the Mavericks this season, outscoring them 25-18 in the fourth quarter to take a 104-97 road victory Jan. 14. Point guard Chris Paul had 33 points, 11 assists, 10 rebounds and seven steals for his second consecutive triple-double against Dallas.

Jason Terry led Dallas with 28 points off the bench in that game. He had 17 points and six assists Wednesday, his third game back after an eight-game absence with a broken hand.

      Pick: New Orleans

Portland Trail Blazers at Denver Nuggets (-5, 198.5)

A losing stretch has the Denver Nuggets in danger of losing their lead in the competitive Northwest Division. The Portland Trail Blazers, meanwhile, are in position to take advantage.

With Carmelo Anthony expected back from a brief suspension, the Nuggets look to avoid their third straight loss and increase a slim division lead as they meet the surging Trail Blazers on Thursday night at the Pepsi Center.

Two weeks ago, Denver (39-22) held a 3 1/2-game lead over Portland in the Northwest. Things were going well for the Nuggets until Feb. 20, when a 116-99 loss at Chicago began a 2-5 stretch.

Portland (38-32), meanwhile, has won three in a row and six of its last eight to move within one-half game of Denver heading into the teams' third meeting of the season. Each has won on their home court.

"It's going to be nice," Portland forward Travis Outlaw said of the showdown. "I just wish we didn't have to get them on a back-to-back, but we'll be ready.''

While the Trail Blazers have played better of late, the Nuggets should be confident at home with Anthony set to return after serving a one-game suspension from coach George Karl for refusing to come out of Denver's 100-94 loss at Indiana on Sunday.

Having Anthony (21.6 ppg, 7.4 rpg) should certainly help the Nuggets, who have won 16 of their last 18 at home against Portland, including a 97-89 victory on Dec. 22.

Denver is 22-7 at home, while Portland is 13-17 on the road.

      Pick: Denver -5

Dallas Mavericks at New Orleans Hornets [TNT | 8 PM ET]

Mavs: Dallas owner Mark Cuban deserves some credit for sparking his team to a 107-102 win over San Antonio on Wednesday night just two days after suffering an embarrassing 96-87 loss to Oklahoma City just two days earlier. Cuban said he was not afraid to turn over the roster 100 percent following the loss the Thunder, and the Mavs responded with a key victory. “If we play hard every possession like we did tonight, we can beat a really good team,” Cuban said. “Now it’s up to the guys to keep on doing it. I knew what we were capable of. We got leadership from Dirk and Josh and Jason Kidd. Everybody was really good. Now we’ve got to do this again and again.”

Mavs are 6-21-1 ATS in their last 28 Thursday games.
The UNDER is 3-1 in the last 4 meetings.

Key Injuries - F Josh Howard (ankle) has returned.

PROJECTED SCORE: 91 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Hornets (-6, O/U 193): New Orleans head coach Byron Scott isn't afraid to admit his team has been a bit lucky during a current five-game winning streak. The Hornets have beaten the Mavs five straight times in New Orleans though, and Scott seems to believe their best basketball is ahead of them. “We really haven’t played our best basketball in the last five games, but we just keep finding ways to win games,” Scott said. “I think we have some confidence in ourselves that when the game is on the line, we are able to get things done to win the game.”

Hornets are 3-12 ATS in their last 15 Thursday games.
The UNDER is 9-3 in New Orleans' last 12 games vs. Southwest Division.

Key Injuries - F Peja Stojakovic (back) is questionable.

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 97

Portland Trail Blazers at Denver Nuggets [TNT | 10:30 PM ET]

Blazers: Portland has pulled within a half-game of Denver for the lead in the Pacific Division thanks to winning three straight and six of eight heading into this key meeting. The Blazers are coming off a tough 107-105 home win over Indiana on Wednesday but have gone just 13-17 on the road this season. “It’s going to be nice,” Portland forward Travis Outlaw said of facing Denver. “I just wish we didn’t have to get them on a back-to-back, but we’ll be ready.”

Blazers are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 Thursday games.
The OVER is 9-3 in the last 12 meetings at Denver.

Key Injuries - C Greg Oden (knee) is OUT.

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 94

Nuggets (-6, O/U 198.5): Denver has struggled on both the offensive and defensive ends lately in going 2-5 in the last seven games. The Nuggets are averaging 5.5 points less while also giving up five more points per game during that stretch. They will have leading scorer Carmelo Anthony back for this game though after he was suspended one game for refusing to leave the court in a 100-94 loss at Indiana on Sunday. “He’s got to coach," Anthony said of head coach George Karl. "We’ve got to play. I mean, at all times during the 82-game season, everybody’s not going to always agree, and that was just one of them times I didn’t agree.”

Nuggets are 11-5 ATS in their last 16 Thursday games.
The OVER is 13-6 in Denver's last 19 games vs. Northwest Division..

Key Injuries - F Carmelo Anthony (suspension) has returned.
