    Daily Sports Roundup

    Thursday, March 5

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Mavericks meet the Hornets and the Nuggets take on the Blazers, while the PGA Tour tees off at The Honda Classic.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

It's Dallas at New Orleans in the opener of the NBA's doubleheader on Thursday night. The last time these teams met on the court was back on January 14 in Texas, with the Hornets pulling out a 104-97 road upset. Chris Paul led the way for New Orleans with 33 points in that win, while David West and Peja Stojakovic had 16 apiece. Jason Terry tossed in 28 points in that losing cause for the Mavs.

The Nuggets will then host the Blazers in the second NBA game of the night. Denver and Portland last played in a back-to-back set on December 22 and 23, with each team winning at home. Portland grabbed a 101-92 win at home on the 23rd, covering the 8-point spread. A day earlier in Denver the Nuggets rolled to a 97-89 win as a 3.5-point favorite; Chauncey Billups had 19 points in that contest.

    The march toward Madness . . .

There are a couple of ranked Pac-10 teams in action on the college hoops schedule for Thursday night, with Stanford at No. 21 Arizona State, and Oregon State at No. 20 UCLA. The Bruins have struggled at just 3-3 over their last six contests, but they did manage to beat California 72-68 in their outing on Saturday.

No. 11 Villanova hosts Providence on Thursday, while No. 23 Illinois is at Penn State. As well, it'll be Dayton at No. 17 Xavier in Atlantic-10 action. When the Musketeers and Flyers clashed back on February 11 Dayton rolled to a 71-58 home win. Chris Wright tossed in 19 points for the Flyers in the game, while Derrick Brown had a team-high 17 points for then-No. 14 Xavier in a losing cause.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The Coyotes will be in Boston to play the Bruins in one of nine games on the National Hockey League schedule for Thursday night. Boston came up short in a battle of top Eastern clubs on Tuesday, falling 4-2 to the Flyers. Phoenix hasn't played since last Saturday, when they dropped a 3-1 home decision to the Blues.

Philadelphia returns to action on Thursday by hosting Calgary, who knocked off the Senators 6-3 on Tuesday in the first game of their Eastern swing. Also on the slate: Toronto at Washington, Edmonton at Ottawa, Pittsburgh at Florida, Columbus at Nashville, Dallas at Los Angeles, and Minnesota at San Jose. As well, the Islanders have a date with a division rival when they host the Rangers.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The PGA Tour hits the links at the PGA National Champion Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida on Thursday morning in The Honda Classic. Sergio Garcia is pegged as the 7/1 Vegas favorite to take home the trophy on the weekend, with Ernie Els right behind him on that list at 8/1 odds. Els is the defending Honda Classic champion, beating Luke Donald by one stroke in 2008.

Camilo Villegas is next at 10/1 odds to win this week, followed by Rory McIlroy at 12/1 odds, and then Robert Allenby at 15/1 odds. Donald won this tournament in 2006, but he has withdrawn from this year's event. As well, 2007 champion Mark Wilson is back at 35/1 odds to get another win in this tournament, while Justin Leonard, who won The Honda Classic in '03, is listed at 20/1 on the Vegas chart.

Thursday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a cold winter night

        13) Texas Tech 84, Kansas 65. Last year, Jayhawks whacked Tech in Lawrence, 109-51. The last week of the regular season is weird.

        12) Underdogs were 5-0 vs spread in first round of Sun Belt tourney, with Florida International's upset of UL-Lafayette the first upset in 13 conference tournament games; favorites were 6-2 vs spread in the two conference tournaments played Tuesday.

        11) Someone explain to me how Jerry Tarkanian is not in the Hall of Fame in Springfield-- I need to know. Dick Vitale is in, and Tark the Shark isn't. This suggests a problem with the selection process.

        10) Memphis won at Houston for its 57th straight Conference USA win, the third longest conference win streak ever. Kentucky won 64 straight SEC games in the late 40's; West Virginia won 59 games in a row in the Southern Conference in the late 50's.

        9) Clippers' DeAndre Jordan is a poster boy for staying in college, as opposed to jumping too early to the NBA. Granted, he is making lot of money, but if he had stayed an extra year and developed his game more (college teams practice so much more than the pros), then his value would have gone through the roof. Jordan is averaging 3.7 ppg in 14.2 minutes a game. Seems like a waste.

        8) UNLV had last weekend off; coach Lon Kruger took advantage by being the grand marshal of the NASCAR race in Vegas Sunday.

        7) NCAA is now investigating Arizona, which is going to make it lot harder for Wildcats to attract a high profile head coach this spring. It could be good news for interim coach Russ Pennell, who has done an admirable job but isn't thought to be a serious contender for the job.

        6) Jimmy Dykes hinted on air the other night that Alabama will also be going after a high profile candidate this spring, but they've had lot of success in Tuscaloosa, and there's still lot of apathy about hoops in Alabama. Its just something to do before spring football starts, so doubtful they're going to get a big-timer to come there to coach.

        5) Georgia 90, Kentucky 85. Tough times for Billy Gillispie, who is in charge of the most joyless basketball program in America. Loser of the Florida-Kentucky game Saturday night is probably NIT-bound; actually, both of them might be going to NIT either way. Way too much pressure on the Kentucky kids-- they just look real tight.

        4) There are no games in America in the first round of World Baseball Classic, with games in Tokyo, Mexico City, San Juan and Toronto.

        3) Let me see, Jimmy Rollins and Derek Jeter are both on American team; Jose Reyes and Hanley Ramirez are both on Dominican side, so managers are going to have tough job keeping those big stars happy. Maybe they can DH one and play one in the field.

        2) Toronto Maple Leafs' last seven games all went into overtime, as Maple Leafs won four of the last five.

        1) If 49ers were so interested in signing Kurt Warner as a free agent, why was Mike Martz fired as offensive coordinator?

                Tips and Trends
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dallas Mavericks at New Orleans Hornets [TNT | 8 PM ET]

Mavs (NA): Dallas owner Mark Cuban deserves some credit for sparking his team to a 107-102 win over San Antonio on Wednesday night just two days after suffering an embarrassing 96-87 loss to Oklahoma City just two days earlier. Cuban said he was not afraid to turn over the roster 100 percent following the loss the Thunder, and the Mavs responded with a key victory. “If we play hard every possession like we did tonight, we can beat a really good team,” Cuban said. “Now it’s up to the guys to keep on doing it. I knew what we were capable of. We got leadership from Dirk and Josh and Jason Kidd. Everybody was really good. Now we’ve got to do this again and again.”

Mavs are 6-21-1 ATS in their last 28 Thursday games.
The UNDER is 3-1 in the last 4 meetings.

Key Injuries - F Josh Howard (ankle) has returned.

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Hornets: New Orleans head coach Byron Scott isn't afraid to admit his team has been a bit lucky during a current five-game winning streak. The Hornets have beaten the Mavs five straight times in New Orleans though, and Scott seems to believe their best basketball is ahead of them. “We really haven’t played our best basketball in the last five games, but we just keep finding ways to win games,” Scott said. “I think we have some confidence in ourselves that when the game is on the line, we are able to get things done to win the game.”

Hornets are 3-12 ATS in their last 15 Thursday games.
The UNDER is 9-3 in New Orleans' last 12 games vs. Southwest Division.

Key Injuries - F Peja Stojakovic (back) is questionable.

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Portland Trail Blazers at Denver Nuggets [TNT | 10:30 PM ET]

Blazers: Portland has pulled within a half-game of Denver for the lead in the Pacific Division thanks to winning three straight and six of eight heading into this key meeting. The Blazers are coming off a tough 107-105 home win over Indiana on Wednesday but have gone just 13-17 on the road this season. “It’s going to be nice,” Portland forward Travis Outlaw said of facing Denver. “I just wish we didn’t have to get them on a back-to-back, but we’ll be ready.”

Blazers are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 Thursday games.
The OVER is 9-3 in the last 12 meetings at Denver.

Key Injuries - C Greg Oden (knee) is OUT.

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Nuggets (-5, O/U 198.5): Denver has struggled on both the offensive and defensive ends lately in going 2-5 in the last seven games. The Nuggets are averaging 5.5 points less while also giving up five more points per game during that stretch. They will have leading scorer Carmelo Anthony back for this game though after he was suspended one game for refusing to leave the court in a 100-94 loss at Indiana on Sunday. “He’s got to coach," Anthony said of head coach George Karl. "We’ve got to play. I mean, at all times during the 82-game season, everybody’s not going to always agree, and that was just one of them times I didn’t agree.”

Nuggets are 11-5 ATS in their last 16 Thursday games.
The OVER is 13-6 in Denver's last 19 games vs. Northwest Division..

Key Injuries - F Carmelo Anthony (suspension) has returned.

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Dayton Flyers at Xavier Musketeers (-10, 130)

Xavier knew it had to improve defensively after last month's loss at Dayton. The Musketeers were able to do so immediately, and now they're a win away from clinching at least a share of their third straight Atlantic 10 regular-season title.

Xavier closes out its home schedule Thursday night against the Flyers, who haven't won on the road in this series in 23 games.

The 17th-ranked Musketeers (23-5, 11-3) continued their run of outstanding defense in a 68-54 victory over St. Joseph's on Thursday. Xavier, which snapped a three-game slide on the road, has held teams to 37.4 percent shooting and 56.3 points per game in winning three of its last four.

The current stretch started after a 71-58 defeat to Dayton on Feb. 11, when the Flyers shot 50.0 percent from the field.

"We got our road nastiness back,'' said Xavier junior Derrick Brown, who had 18 points and 10 rebounds Thursday and became the 46th player in program history to reach 1,000 points. "We were just trying to get it back in time and I think we're in the right direction."

The Musketeers are giving up 62.7 points per game and 38.6 percent shooting on the season.

They can secure at least a share of the conference crown with a victory Thursday, but a loss would create a three-way tie for first place with Dayton and Rhode Island. The Rams host Massachusetts on Saturday afternoon in their regular-season finale, while the Flyers return home to face Duquesne that night.

The Musketeers will be going for their 24th straight conference victory at the Cintas Center, but they'll be facing a Dayton team that's allowing 60.4 points per game and 39.3 shooting.

The Flyers (24-5, 10-4) snapped a two-game slide Saturday, beating Temple 70-65. They'll be trying to end a much longer skid at Xavier, as their last victory there came Jan. 10, 1981.

Dayton needs one victory to surpass the 1953-54 team for most wins in a season in school history.

On Saturday, the Flyers improved to 11-1 this season in games decided by five points or fewer behind Chris Wright's season-high 20. The sophomore forward had a team-high 19 points, including the Flyers' final nine, as they ended a six-game losing streak to Xavier last month.

                        Pick: Dayton

Illinois Fighting Illini at Penn State Nittany Lions (+2, 116)

The Big Ten's reputation as a conference that prides itself on tightly contested, defensive battles has been around for a while, but what Illinois and Penn State provided in their first meeting this season went well beyond the league's low-scoring stigma.

After combining for the fewest points in a Division I game in more than three years last month in Champaign, the No. 23 Fighting Illini and Nittany Lions will both hope for a better offensive showing Thursday night in University Park in a key conference showdown.

Penn State (20-9, 9-7) and Illinois (23-7, 11-6) are sixth and seventh, respectively, in scoring in the Big Ten, which is well on its way to its seventh consecutive season of being the lowest-scoring major conference in the nation.

That defensive nature was taken to the extreme Feb. 18 at Assembly Hall, where the Nittany Lions won for the third straight time despite shooting a season-low 28.3 percent. Illinois shot 30.0 percent in a 38-33 loss, becoming the first team to not attempt a free throw at the 46-year-old venue.

It was the lowest-scoring game in Division I since Monmouth beat Princeton 41-21 on Dec. 14, 2005.

"(James) Naismith probably rolled over several times," Penn State coach Ed DeChellis said in reference to basketball's founding father.

Illinois' point total was its lowest since a 33-31 loss to Minnesota in 1947.

The Illini have clinched a first-round bye in the Big Ten tournament, and with 23 wins - including a victory over No. 15 Missouri and a season sweep of No. 19 Purdue - their place in the NCAA tournament has been secure for weeks.

A dreadful non-conference schedule has Penn State firmly on the NCAA fence despite victories over the league's top three teams - No. 8 Michigan State, Purdue and Illinois.

Penn State narrowly survived what would have been a devastating blow to its NCAA hopes Saturday. Talor Battle, the conference's second-leading scorer at 17.0 points per game, had 16 and eight rebounds in a 61-58 home win over last-place Indiana.

"We've got a lot of things to improve on but we're happy to just walk out of here with a win," Battle said.

The Nittany Lions are 10-0 when Battle scores 21 or more and 0-5 when he has 10 or fewer.

                        Pick: Over
