Vancouver Canucks at Montréal Canadiens (-105, 6)
The Montréal Canadiens are going through tough times.
If their current losing streak which led to Kovalev being excluded from the team’s two-game trip wasn’t bad enough, they also had to deal with reports that brothers Andrei and Sergei Kostitsyn and to a lesser extent Roman Hamrlik have ties to a man facing criminal charges.
But the Habs set aside these distractions beating the Ottawa Senators 5-3 in front of a relieved home crowd Saturday night.
“I’m very satisfied,” coach Guy Carbonneau told reporters. “When you have a situation like we had this week, you hope it will bring players together, but you never know.”
Alex Kovalev looked refreshed and energized from his time off, picking up one goal and two assists in that game. Montréal also managed to score on its first three power plays and is now 7-for-12 with the man advantage since acquiring Mathieu Schneider.
The Canucks are on fire, winning eight of their last nine games. One of these victories came at home against the Habs a little over a week ago. Expect Montréal to want to get even.
Pick: Canadiens
Philadelphia Flyers at Washington Capitals (-147, 6)
The Washington Capitals are almost unstoppable at home this season, earning a 23-5-1 record inside the Verizon Center. And four of their five losses at home have been to Colorado, Columbus, Edmonton and Los Angeles – all of which have struggled this year.
The Capitals bounced back from an ugly 4-1 home loss to the Colorado Avalanche Friday night by crushing the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-2 Sunday.
“We played terrible against Colorado,” Ovechkin told the media. “We didn’t play our game, we didn’t play our system and we tried to play too cute. But tonight we played simple, played our system with great energy and our four lines played awesome. Sometimes, you need to lose like that to realize you have to work harder and do a better job.”
When the Capitals are on their game, they put the puck in the back of the net often. They have scored more than four goals a game in their last 10. The Flyers have averaged five goals a contest in their last four games, all of them going over.
