    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, February 24

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Lakers and Cavaliers take on cupcake opponents, Pittsburgh meets Providence, and the Bruins get set for the Panthers.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

Both Kobe Bryant and LeBron James will be looking to pad their scoring stats on Tuesday night when their respective teams go up against a couple of the league's bottom feeders. The Lakers will be in Oklahoma City to face the Thunder, while the Cavaliers will be at home to face the Grizzlies. The Thunder and Grizzlies have a combined 28 wins so far as they play out the string this year.

The top matchup of the night, though, will take place in Texas, where the Spurs will host the Mavericks. Those rivals haven't met since a high-scoring affair back in early December; Tim Duncan put up 32 points in a 133-126 double-overtime road win for San Antonio. Detroit will be in Miami to play the Heat in the top Eastern matchup for Tuesday, while it'll also be Minnesota at Toronto, Orlando at Chicago, and Portland at Houston, with Charlotte at Phoenix to finish the evening.

    The march toward Madness . . .

Pittsburgh picked up their seventh straight victory last time out, rolling to an 80-61 win over DePaul with 20 points from DeJuan Blair. The 25-2 Panthers (14-7 against-the-spread) will be trying to run that streak to eight games on Tuesday night when they travel to the Dunkin' Donuts Center to meet Providence. The Friars (16-11 SU, 8-15 ATS) were pounded 103-84 by Notre Dame last contest.

Syracuse will be trying to build on a big overtime win versus Georgetown when they take on St. John's on Tuesday night, while LSU will play host to Florida in Baton Rouge. The Tigers knocked off Auburn by a final score of 79-72 on Saturday, with Marcus Thornton pouring in a team-high 25 points in that victory.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The Panthers and Bruins will have a rematch in Boston on Tuesday night, with Florida coming off a 2-0 blanking of the Bruins on Saturday night. Tomas Vokoun stopped all 41 Boston shots in that contest, while Radek Dvorak potted both Panthers goals. Tim Thomas allowed two goals on 31 shots in that losing cause.

There are 10 other games on the NHL schedule for Tuesday, including Alexander Ovechkin and his Capitals hosting the Flyers. Washington edged Philadelphia 2-1 when the teams last met in early January. Also on the slate: Anaheim at Buffalo, Colorado at Atlanta, Carolina at Ottawa, Vancouver at Montreal, Chicago at Nashville, Los Angeles at Minnesota, Phoenix at St. Louis, and Tampa Bay at Edmonton, with Columbus at Calgary rounding out the night.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The NHL's trade deadline is just over a week away, which means the league's Vegas futures list could see some changes very soon. The Red Wings continue to lead at 3/1 odds to claim this year's Stanley Cup, followed by the Sharks at 7/2, the Bruins at 5/1, and both the Flames and Capitals at 8/1. The Canadiens, who have struggled both on and off the ice of late, are next at 10/1 odds to win the Cup, and could be one of the teams making big moves in the week ahead.

Tuesday's List of 13: Conference races coming down to wire

        13) Big East-- Four teams seem locked into top four, which is worth a double-bye at conference tournament; pretty good dogfight to get into top eight, which gets you a first-day bye.

        12) Atlantic-14-- Rick Majerus' Saint Louis Billikens are 17-10, 8-5, have been playing better lately. Xavier, Dayton would both appear to be in, but Flyers are missing their point guard rest of the way......

        11) Big 11--Top five teams get first-day bye, and pretty good battle is going on, with five teams vying for last two spots. Hard to believe Illinois is 10-5 in league, when they lost their last home game, 38-33.

        10) Colonial-- Six teams are from 10-6 to 12-4, as bottom four teams in league are combined 16-48. Going to be couple damn good games in quarterfinal round, which is early for really evenly-matched games.

        9) America East-- Vermont, Binghamton are both 12-3; tournament is here in Albany, but finals are in gym of highest-seeded survivor, so it is huge to see which teams wins regular season title.

        8) ACC-- How is Miami 5-8 and in 10th place out of 12? BC lost at home to Harvard, but beat Duke and North Carolina. Wake Forest is 0-4 in last four road games. Lot of incocnsistent teams.

        7) Big 12-- As it stands now, poor Colorado would have to play an angry Texas team in first round of Big 12 tournament, which doesn't seem fair- Buffs recently lost to Longhorns at home in overtime.

        6) Ivy-- Only league without a conference tournament, so Cornell's two-game lead with four games to play over four other squads is big. Big Red went 16-0 in league last year, so they've regressed a little.

        5) Big West-- The two teams tied for first are 13-12/12-12 overall, so really bad year for this league. Long Beach State had three freshmen on the court for a lot of their game vs Green Bay Saturday.

        4) Mountain West-- Any league where UNLV is 5th is pretty strong league; it sets up scenario where the 4-seed would have road game in first round of MWC tourney, with top seed Utah having road game in second round, if Rebels win their first game.

        3) Pac-10-- Looking like could be Round 3 of Civil War (Oregon St- Oregon) the first night of tournament. Ducks are really only bad team in league, but Stanford still hasn't won road game in conference play.

        2) WAC, WCC-- Gonzaga, Utah State have three-game leads in their respective leagues; Zags are in NCAAs no matter what. Utah State is going to have to win WAC tournament, or they'll go to the NIT.

        1) Sun Belt-- No clear-cut favorite between Western Kentucky and Arkansas-Little Rock (13-3) or Troy State (12-4); South Alabama is getting hot at right time, and North Texas is pretty good, too.

Dallas Mavericks at San Antonio Spurs [5:30 PM ET]

Mavs: Dallas should be well-rested for this divisional matchup after pounding Sacramento 116-95 on Saturday. The Mavs were able to play their reserves for a majority of the second half thanks to a 70-50 halftime lead. Brandon Bass and James Singleton each enjoyed season highs with 20 and 19 points, respectively. “We just thought it was a good opportunity to let it ride with those guys,” Dallas head coach Rick Carlisle said. “They had a good rhythm. They were defending and they were scoring.”

Underdog is 19-7 ATS in the last 26 meetings.
The UNDER is 9-3 in Dallas' last 12 games vs. Southwest Division.

Key Injuries - G Jason Terry (hand) is OUT.

              PROJECTED SCORE: 93

Spurs (-4, O/U 190.5): San Antonio returns home for the first time this month following an eight-game road trip that lasted 19 days while the rodeo took over the AT&T Center. “Every year, we seem to make something out of it,” Spurs All-Star Tim Duncan said. “There’s no way to deny it. Every year, we come out of this road trip a better team. We find a way to bond. We find a way to do something on the road. It works for us.” San Antonio lost Manu Ginobili during the trip to an ankle injury that will sideline him another two weeks, but Roger Mason Jr. stepped up with 25 points in a 98-67 rout of Washington on Saturday to close out the trip.

Spurs are 8-2-1 ATS in their last 11 games overall.
The OVER is 7-2 in San Antonio's last 9 home games.

Key Injuries - G Manu Ginobili (ankle) is OUT.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA best bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Memphis Grizzlies at Cleveland Cavaliers (-13.5, 189.5)

The Cavaliers hammered the Detroit Pistons Sunday.

Expect an even bigger blowout victory against the lowly Grizzlies Tuesday.

Cleveland is virtually unbeatable at home. In fact, it is 24-1 straight up (SU) and 19-6 against the spread (ATS) at home this season.

The Cavaliers rolled to a 30-point triumph over the Pistons Sunday. It was their third double-digit home victory in their last four overall in Cleveland.

“I thought our guys did a nice job defensively at the beginning of the game,” Cleveland coach Mike Brown told reporters. “We did a nice job contesting shots.”

Memphis, meanwhile, has lost four straight and is just 8-16 ATS overall on the road.

                Pick: Cavaliers

Charlotte Bobcats at Phoenix Suns (-6.5, 222)

Phoenix shouldn’t have a problem outscoring the Bobcats. Charlotte is ranked last in the league in scoring (92.3 PPG) and 22nd in field goal percentage (44.9 percent).

The Suns, meanwhile, have put up more than 140 points in three of their last four games.

Phoenix is 3-1 since Terry Porter was fired and replaced by Alvin Gentry, who rehashed the clubs up-tempo style that was played so well under Mike D'Antoni.

The Suns topped the 140-point mark against the Oklahoma City Thunder Friday without All-Star forward Amare Stoudemire. He is expected to miss the rest of the season after undergoing eye surgery to repair a partially detached retina suffered in Wednesday’s win over the Los Angeles Clippers.

“I think this proves if we really push the ball and make good decisions, we can score no matter who is in the lineup,” Steve Nash told reporters.

The Suns are 5-2-1 ATS in their last eight against the Bobcats.

                Pick: Suns

Penn State at Ohio State [ESPN | 7 PM ET]

Penn State: The Nittany Lions can reach the 20-win plateau for the first time in eight years with one more victory, but whether or not that comes on Tuesday remains to be seen. They also have not made the NCAA tournament since they last won 20 games and clearly find themselves on the bubble going into this crucial conference showdown with another bubble team. “I think the biggest thing for us is to win games,” Penn State head coach DeChellis said. “Then the pot of gold will be at the end of the rainbow.”

Road team is 8-2 ATS in the last 10 meetings.
The OVER is 6-2-1 in Penn State's last 9 Tuesday games.

Key Injuries - F Billy Oliver (concussion) is OUT.

Ohio State (-6, O/U 126.5): The Buckeyes seemed to be closing in on an NCAA tournament berth but have taken a step backward following three straight losses. They suffered a tough 70-68 setback at home to Illinois on Sunday following back-to-back road losses at Wisconsin and Northwestern but may have received a motivational boost with David Lighty returning to practice. While Lighty is still not ready to play in a game, the energy surrounding the team has changed, according to head coach Thad Motta. “It was the most ridiculous thing I’ve seen in my life,” said Matta.

Ohio State is 7-1-1 ATS in its last 9 Tuesday games.
The OVER is 7-2 in Ohio State's last 9 Tuesday games.

Florida at #18 LSU [ESPN | 9 PM ET]

Florida: The Gators are in a three-way tie atop the East Division in the SEC and face a tough stretch to end the regular season, starting with this visit to LSU. After this game, they host Tennessee on Sunday and then visit Mississippi State before closing out at home against Kentucky. “We’re really excited and up for the challenge,” Florida forward Alex Tyus said. “We’re really going to see where we’re at as a team. We might have been unsure earlier, but now we know we can do it. We have a lot of confidence. We feel like we’re coming on.”

Underdog is 6-2 ATS in the last 8 meetings.
The UNDER is 6-2 in Florida's last 8 road games.

Key Injuries - F Allan Chaney (heel) is OUT.

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 71

LSU (-4, O/U 151): The Tigers can clinch at least a share of the SEC title on Tuesday, as they own a three-game lead on the Gators in the race for the regular-season conference championship. LSU has won 11 straight games in league play following a loss to Alabama in the conference opener and clinched the West Division title with a 79-72 win over Auburn on Saturday. “There is more out there for us to accomplish,” Tigers head coach Trent Johnson said. “Nobody in the locker room wanted to cut down the nets. They were very subdued and relaxed. It was a businesslike approach. We just want to win the next game.”

LSU is 0-3 ATS in its last 3 home games.
The OVER is 6-2 in LSU's last 8 home games.

                        Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 80 (Side Play of the Day)

Florida Gators at LSU Tigers (-4, 151)

While the Tigers already have their division wrapped up, winning the East won't be easy for Florida.

After visiting LSU, the Gators host Tennessee on Sunday, visit Mississippi State on March 4 and close the regular season at home against Kentucky three days later.

"We're really excited and up for the challenge," said forward Alex Tyus, Florida's second-leading scorer (12.4). "We're really going to see where we're at as a team. We might have been unsure earlier, but now we know we can do it. We have a lot of confidence. We feel like we're coming on."

The Gators haven't played since last Saturday's impressive 82-68 win over Vanderbilt. Florida had five players in double figures, shot a season-high 61.2 percent from the field and made 10-of-19 from 3-point range.

"When we get that kind of balanced scoring, it's tough to beat us," said Nick Calathes, who finished with 14 points despite playing with the flu. "If we get that every game, contributors like that, we're a really good team."

Calathes, averaging a team-high 18.6 points, had 16 points and seven rebounds against LSU last season.

Florida improved to 15-0 in Gainesville this season with the win over the Commodores, but has just two wins in seven road games. Breaking out of their road funk in Baton Rouge won't be easy for the Gators against an LSU team that is 18-1 at home.

                          Pick: Florida +4

Pittsburgh Panthers at Providence Friars (+8, 157.5)

The Friars (16-11, 8-7) looked like they might be NCAA tournament-bound late after opening Big East play 6-2, but they've struggled since. Providence has dropped five of seven, most recently losing 103-84 at home to Notre Dame on Saturday.

"What's a defense going to do?" coach Keno Davis said after the Fighting Irish made 11 first-half 3-pointers. "It seemed like they got whatever they wanted, whether they wanted to go inside or outside."

The loss certainly wasn't on the shoulders of senior guard Weyinmi Efejuku, who had a career-high 31 points. Efejuku is averaging 23.7 points in his previous three games.

Junior guard Sharaud Curry, who had 23 against the Irish, averaged 22.0 points in his last two games against Pitt.

                          Providence is 1-10 all-time against top-ranked teams.

                          Pick: Pittsburgh -8
