    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL bets
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Maple Leafs at Buffalo Sabres (-191, 6)

The banged-up Buffalo Sabres are searching for consistency as they try to stay in playoff position in a crowded Eastern Conference.

Playing just their second home game in nearly four weeks probably can't hurt.

Coming off their longest road trip of the season, the Sabres will now play five of their next six at HSBC Arena, starting on Wednesday against the Northeast Division rival Toronto Maple Leafs.

Nine of Buffalo's last 10 games have been on the road, including the last six in a row spanning the All-Star break. The club's difficult January slate included visits to a trio of top contenders in Boston, Detroit and Calgary.

The Sabres went 4-5-0 in their last nine road games, but hung on to seventh place in the East - leading three teams by four or fewer points in the standings. A return home should help considering they're 5-1-1 in their last seven at Buffalo.

But their recent stretch has been even more difficult with coach Lindy Ruff's club missing four regular defensemen, as Jaroslav Spacek, Henrik Tallinder, Teppo Numminen and Andrej Sekera are injured. All except Spacek are on injured reserve.

It was no surprise the Sabres (26-20-5) were outshot 37-23 in Monday's 3-2 loss at Anaheim, but Ruff was more upset with his offense, which has scored two goals in three consecutive games since a 10-2 win at Edmonton.

    Pick: Toronto +178

Anaheim Ducks at Minnesota Wild (-135, 5)

Minnesota has struggled on offense in two matchups versus the Ducks this season. After the Wild fell 4-2 in Anaheim on Dec. 14, Ducks backup Jonas Hiller made 30 saves in a 3-0 win at Xcel Energy Center on Jan. 17.

Hiller is 2-0 with a 1.89 goals-against average in four career appearances against Minnesota.

He is 7-4-0 with a 2.13 GAA in his last 12 games overall, and made 21 saves Monday in his fourth outing since the break. All-Star starter Jean-Sebastien Giguere, meanwhile, is 1-5-2 with a 3.68 GAA in his last nine contests for the Ducks.

While Anaheim's goaltending situation is uncertain for Wednesday, Minnesota is likely to open its four-game homestand with Niklas Backstrom in net.

The All-Star has won six of his last nine starts at Xcel Energy Center, and is 8-4-0 with a 2.17 GAA in his last 12 games overall.

To continue his recent success, Backstrom will have to contain a Ducks offense which has scored 16 goals in four games since the All-Star break. Anaheim has at least one power-play goal in nine consecutive games, and scored two on Monday.

Perry has five goals and three assists during a five-game point streak against the Wild.

Anaheim, which is opening a three-game road trip, has won two of its last three visits to Minnesota after losing five straight there.

    Pick: Over 5

College Funds: Wednesday's best NCAAB bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

USC Trojans at UCLA Bruins (-9, 130)

UCLA's first matchup with USC was tightly contested, with the Bruins prevailing despite shooting 42.0 percent. The Trojans shot 49.0 percent, and DeMar DeRozan led the team with 15 points.

The freshman forward had a game-high 19 points in USC's 73-62 win over Cal on Saturday night. DeRozan was outstanding on both ends of the floor as the Trojans won their third straight and fifth in their last six games.

He shot 8-of-12 and helped limit Golden Bears sharpshooter Theo Robertson in check. Robertson, who leads the nation in 3-point shooting at 56.9-percent, missed his lone attempt from beyond the arc and finished with four points.

"I really try to use my defense to create my offense," DeRozan said. "I know we can get out and get easy baskets when were defending well.

"In high school, I always had to play against the other teams best player and it would usually be, who outscores who, but coach (Tim Floyd) emphasizes defense. Its college and you really have to go out and guard."

DeRozan is one of four players averaging double figures in scoring for USC. Junior forward Taj Gibson leads the Trojans with 14.9 points a contest. He had 13 points in last month's matchup with the Bruins.

UCLA has won three straight and eight of 10 against USC, and leads the series 127-100. The Trojans won last season's game at Pauley Pavilion, 72-63.

            Pick: USC +9

Texas A&M Aggies at Oklahoma Sooners (-12, 138)

Blake Griffin and Willie Warren have led Oklahoma to its longest undefeated start in conference play in more than two decades. Based on the team's first meeting with Texas A&M, the Sooners could need someone else to step up to keep their streak alive.

Griffin and Warren hope to deliver better performances in their second meeting with the Aggies as the second-ranked Sooners look to improve to 8-0 in Big 12 competition Wednesday night in Norman.

Oklahoma (21-1, 7-0) has the best record in the country with the third-best one-loss start in Big 12 history. The Sooners are also tied with Kansas atop the Big 12 with their longest undefeated start to conference play since they won their first 11 games in the Big Eight in 1985.

Griffin gets most of the credit for the Sooners' impressive start. The 6-foot-10 sophomore forward leads the Big 12 with 22.4 points per game and leads all Division I players with 14.1 rebounds per game and 18 double-doubles.

Warren's emergence has given the Sooners a valuable second scoring option to help spread the floor for Griffin. The 6-foot-4 freshman guard is averaging 15.5 points and shooting 50.5 percent from the field and 39.4 percent from 3-point range.

Neither player, however, lived up to his lofty standards in the Sooners' 69-63 road win over the Aggies (17-5, 3-4) on Jan. 17.

Griffin got into early foul trouble and was limited to 24 minutes, finishing with 16 points and a season low-tying six rebounds. A 63.8 percent shooter on the season, he was 6-for-14 in that game.

The Aggies also managed to keep Warren in check, holding him to nine points.

            Pick: Texas A&M +12
