    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, January 19

An American holiday Monday features plenty of afternoon matchups around the world of sports. Here's a look at all the day's action in your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

The Super Bowl matchup was set on Sunday - and it'll be Arizona vs. Pittsburgh in the big game this year. The Cardinals were the first to win their conference championship on Sunday, jumping out to a 24-6 lead by halftime and holding on for a 32-25 victory. Arizona was pegged as a 3.5-point home underdog in that contest, while the combined score went OVER the posted total (47). The Steelers then took the AFC title with a 23-14 win over the Ravens on Sunday night, covering the 6-point spread at home. The combined score went OVER the 35.5-point total.

    Other Notable Events

While there are plenty of matinees around the NBA on Monday, the top matchup of the day doesn't tip off until 10:30pm ET, with LeBron James and his Cleveland Cavaliers travelling west to take on Kobe Bryant and his Los Angeles Lakers. The Cavs got past New Orleans 92-78 last time out, improving to 31-7 straight-up and 27-11 against-the-spread this year. The Lakers are coming off a 109-103 loss to Orlando, and they sit at 31-8 SU but just 18-21 ATS so far on the season.

The NBA begins its day with afternoon action in Philadelphia and New York, with the Mavericks taking on the Sixers and the Bulls meeting the Knicks in 1:00pm ET contests. Other matinee games include Toronto at Atlanta, San Antonio at Charlotte, Denver at Houston, Minnesota at the Clippers, Indiana at New Orleans, and Washington at Golden State, while Memphis hosts Detroit at 5:30pm ET. The Suns are then in Boston for an 8:00pm ET tipoff with the Celtics, while the other game on the schedule has Portland playing host to Milwaukee.

    The Rest of the Schedule

The National Hockey League features a couple of afternoon games on Monday as well, with St. Louis at Boston and Washington at the Islanders. Later action features Dallas at Tampa Bay, Carolina at Toronto, Buffalo at Florida, and Minnesota at Chicago, while the Devils will be in Nashville to play the Predators.

Finally, there are just a handful of notable games on the college hoops schedule for Monday, including Syracuse at Pittsburgh; the Panthers are coming off their first loss of the season, falling 69-63 to Louisville on Saturday. As well, it's Louisiana-Lafayette at UAB, Cincinnati at Providence, and Texas A&M at Kansas.

    News from the Wire

Clippers center Marcus Camby sprained his ankle on Saturday, leaving him questionable to play on Monday afternoon . . . Knicks rookie forward Danilo Gallinari finally returned from his back injury on Saturday . . . Pistons guard Allen Iverson hurt his knee on Saturday, but was able to finish the game . . . Newly-signed Devils forward Brendan Shanahan is expected to debut on Monday night.

    A Peek at the Future

A quieter Tuesday in the NBA has just four games, most notably Atlanta at Chicago. As well, it'll be Indiana at San Antonio, Sacramento at Denver, and Minnesota at Utah . . . the NHL has eight games on tap for Tuesday, including Anaheim at the Rangers and Vancouver at San Jose; the league's All-Star Break begins on Thursday . . . Ranked Duke will host N.C. State in hoops action on Tuesday, with Tennessee taking on Vanderbilt, and Michigan battling Penn State.

        Tips and Trends
        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleveland Cavaliers at Los Angeles Lakers [TNT | 10:30 PM ET]

Cavs: LeBron James has had no problem getting motivated when he plays Kobe Bryant and the Lakers. James is averaging 37.3 points in the last three meetings with LA, and his team owns a five-game winning streak in the series. He totaled 41 points and nine rebounds in a 98-95 victory at Staples Center the last time the teams met nearly a year ago. However, Cleveland has dropped three of four away from home this year and begins a tough four-game West Coast road trip in LA.

Cavs are 6-1 SU & ATS in the last 7 meetings.
The UNDER is 6-2 in Cleveland's last 8 games vs. Western Conference.

Key Injuries - G Delonte West (wrist) is OUT.
C Zydrunas Ilgauskas (ankle) is OUT.

        PROJECTED SCORE: 99

Lakers (-4, O/U 202): LA head coach Phil Jackson gave his team the day off on Saturday before returning to practice on Sunday following two straight losses for the second time this season. The Lakers are battling through one of their toughest stretches of the year and will try to take advantage of a Cavs team that will be lacking depth due to injuries to Delonte West and Zydrunas Ilgauskas. Still, Jackson does not see any edge. "There's no advantage to home court in this situation," Jackson said. "We have to stop this bleeding right now."

Lakers are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games overall.
The UNDER is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings.

Key Injuries - F Luke Walton (foot) is questionable.

        PROJECTED SCORE: 103

          Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA bets
          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Knicks at Chicago Bulls (-2.5, 210)

The Knicks haven't had much success against the Bulls lately, losing 12 of the last 16 meetings.

After winning its previous two games, Chicago is coming off Saturday's 92-87 loss to San Antonio.

The Bulls had another solid defensive effort, but their offense was held to their fourth-lowest point total of the season. Chicago has allowed an average of 94.3 points in its last three games, and is 10-2 when allowing 95 points or fewer this season.

"I thought we played good enough to win," said Andres Nocioni, who had 17 points and a season-high 15 rebounds. "But that's the way we have to play every night. The last four games we played together and with much more effort."

Ben Gordon, who is averaging a team-high 20.2 points, had 20 on Saturday after scoring a season-low five in Thursday's 102-93 overtime victory over Cleveland. Gordon, who grew up just outside of New York City, has scored 25 or more points in three of his last five trips to Madison Square Garden.

This will be Derrick Rose's first NBA game at MSG.

The top overall pick of the 2008 draft finished with 12 points on just 6-of-21 shooting on Saturday, but did have eight assists. Rose had 15 points and seven assists in the Bulls' win over the Knicks in December.

          Pick: Chicago -2.5

Cleveland Cavaliers at Los Angeles Lakers (-4.5, 202)

LeBron James is having a MVP-caliber season in helping lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to the top of the Eastern Conference with the league's best record. Considering the way he has played against the Los Angeles Lakers lately, he probably would receive reigning league MVP Kobe Bryant's vote.

In a matchup featuring the best team from each conference, James looks to help lead the Cavaliers to their sixth straight win over Bryant and the Lakers as they open a four-game road trip Monday at Staples Center.

After falling to Boston in the East semifinals last season, James has Cleveland (31-7) poised to make a run for its first NBA title. The Cavaliers, who have not won a division title since 1975-76, have a 9 1/2-game lead over second-place Detroit in the Central Division, and are competing with Orlando and Boston for the best record in the East.

Los Angeles (31-8) once again looks like it might control home court throughout the Western Conference playoffs, as it has a five-game lead atop the conference. The Pacific Division-leading Lakers lost to Boston in last season's finals and are seeking their first title since 2001-02.

Bryant, who received his first MVP award last season, recorded his 15th career triple-double and first since April 1, 2005 his last time out.

The 10-time All-Star had 28 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists in the Lakers' 109-103 loss to the Magic on Friday, but missed two jumpers in the waning moments.

The Lakers have lost two straight games after winning 10 of 11. They have not dropped three in a row since Jan. 23-27 of last season, which included a loss to Cleveland.

"We have to back it up and stop this bleeding right now," Los Angeles coach Phil Jackson said.

Facing the Cavs might not be the answer, though.

Cleveland has won five straight games over the Lakers since a 99-98 loss on Jan. 12, 2006 - the longest win streak by the Cavs in the series.

In their last meeting on Jan. 27, Cleveland won 98-95 at Los Angeles, behind James' 41 points and nine rebounds. James, the league's second-leading scorer (27.8 points per game), is averaging 37.3 points in his last three games versus the Lakers.

          Pick: Cleveland +4.5

                    Ice Picks: NHL Bets
                    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington Capitals at New York Islanders (+250, 6)

The Islanders might have to strap the ole' shooter tutor between the post with the way they're burning through goaltenders.

New York has had to turn to Yann Danis since losing starter Rick DiPietro for most of the season and most recently backup Joey MacDonald, who will be sidelined for at least two weeks with a groin strain. Danis has played well in this emergency role. He's lost all three games but is allowing just over two goals per game in that stretch.

Danis hasn't received much support on the scoreboard. The Islanders have mustered just three goals in each of Danis' starts and are averaging only two goals per game during their seven-game losing streak. New York has all but conceded the remainder of the schedule since winning just 12 games. Coach Scott Gordon has admitted he's trying to give the younger, inexperienced players more minutes and has started looking ahead to next season.

                    Pick: Under 6

Buffalo Sabres at Florida Panthers (-118, 5.5)

Tomas Vokoun was supposed to have the night off Saturday. But after the Panthers went down big in the first period, Vokoun came off the bench in relief of Craig Anderson and stopped all 22 shots he faced and helped Florida edge state rival Tampa Bay.

Vokoun has backstopped the Panthers playoff push heading into the All-Star break. He's won four of his last five appearances and has a given up under three goals per game during this span. Florida has made it easy for the five-year veteran, scoring four or more goals in each of those wins.

The Panthers edged the Sabres earlier this season. Vokoun sat out that December 4 meeting which Florida won 2-1 despite being outshot 46-25.

                    Pick: Florida -118
