Ice picks: Friday's best NHL bets
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Anaheim Ducks at Pittsburgh Penguins

When you've fallen as far as the Penguins have, you begin to think if things could sink any lower. And they have.

Along with suffering their 17th loss since November to Washington Wednesday, Pittsburgh watched captain Sidney Crosby limp off the ice with an apparent knee injury. Early reports say the injury is not as bad as expected. Crosby skipped Thursday's practice and is a game-time decision for Friday's tilt.

He wasn't the only guy wearing a black and gold jersey to go down. Pittsburgh also lost blueliner Rob Scuderi and forward Maxime Talbot Wednesday. Both players' status for Friday is unknown.

Crosby has just three goals in his past 10 games but has seven assist in the last four contests. He's also the Penguins' top faceoff man. Scuderi is averaging more than 18 minutes a game for a defensive corps that without top blueliner Sergi Gonchar. Talbot has five goals and five assists on the season.

Pittsburgh is 2-8 in its last 10 games and have dropped six of its past seven games inside Mellon Arena.

    Pick: Anaheim

New York Rangers at Chicago Blackhawks (-168, 5.5)

Blackhawks leading scorer Patrick Kane still has a hitch in his giddy up due to a high ankle sprain. He's played in the past four games but has struggled to produce the same numbers as when he was healthy. Kane hasn't score in the last eight games and has registered just three assists during that span.

“It’s one of those things where you’ve got to play through pain,” Kane told reporters. “I watched a couple of games from the bench and I couldn’t do it anymore. I had to get back on the ice.”

His lack of production hasn't slowed the Blackhawks in the past two games. Goaltenders Cristobal Huet and Nikolai Khabibulin posted back-to-back one-goal games. The two have split starts over the last 12 games. According to that pattern, Khabibulin should get the start Friday.

Plenty of rumors have swirled around the goalie's future in the Windy City. Huet is locked into a long-term deal and many teams would love to swoop in and grab Khabibulin. He's posted a 13-3-4 record with a 2.34 GAA and a .925 save percentage.

    Pick: Under 5.5

            Six-pack for Friday

-- Jim Haslett is out in St Louis, as Rams apparently are waiting on Rex Ryan; otherwise, they'd make an offer to Spagnuolo or Frazier, who are available now. Guess I have to root for Steelers on Sunday, so Ryan becomes available and Rams can hire a new coach.

-- Cavaliers lost to Bulls, also lost Delonte West with broken wrist after he had scored 11 points in first quarter Thursday. Bad night.

-- Michael Young agreed to move to 3B for Rangers this season; he had previously volunteered to move from 2B to SS when Rangers dumped ARod for Alfonso Soriano. Not all guys would do that.

-- Padres signed David Eckstein to play second base, day after they signed Mark Prior, who hasn't pitched since 2006. Already looks to be a long season for the Padres- spring training is still month away.

-- Lions signed Tennessee DC Jim Schwartz as its new head coach; seems like most of this year's new coaches are defensive guys.

-- USC held James Harden without a basket Thursday, rallying in second half to beat Arizona State 61-49. ASU led by 11 in 1st half.

Friday's List of 13: Our college basketball List of 13

As always, this isn't a ranking, just list of observations on teams that impressed me, for better or for worse.......

              13) Northwestern-- Had promising December, to point where there was discussion of Wildcats' first-ever NCAA appearance. Now, they are 0-4 in Big 11, and looking a lot like the same ol' Wildcats.

              12) Minnesota-- Orlando (Tubby) Smith can flat-out coach; Gophers won in OT Thursday at Wisconsin after being down 11 points at the half, their best win of the Tubby era.

              11) Oklahoma State-- Last year, Cowboys averaged 65.7 possessions a game (211th in country) in Sean Sutton's final year in Stillwater; the Cowboys are averaging 71.9 possessions this year, in Travis Ford's first year- that ranks 71st in country. They're playing faster, better.

              10) Georgia Tech-- This is fourth year in a row Jackets' starting PG is a freshman; thats not a good way to have a winning program.

              9) Long Beach State-- Dan Monson has 49ers atop Big West at 4-0, with four freshmen in rotation; he basically started from scratch with the Niners last year, and has done a terrific quick fix.

              8) Rutgers-- They spend so much money on football, but cut corners in basketball; no disrespect meant here, but the Big East has Calhoun, Pitino and Huggins as head coaches, while the State University of NJ has Fred Hill. The Big East is no place for an entry level head coach.

              7) Xavier-- Won tough game at Rhode Island Thursday, are now 3-0 and tied for first in A-14 with surprising Duquesne. Looking at their schedule, Musketeers ain't losing anytime soon.

              6) ACC-- Home favorites of less than 10 points are 1-9 vs spread in ACC games so far this season; double digit favorites are 4-1.

              5) Wake Forest-- Just as impressed by their easy win at BC as I was by their upset of North Carolina-- 16-0 Clemson is up next Saturday.

              4) Georgia Tech-- Horrible foul shooting team; TV folks made a point during last game that if Tech had made 102 straight foul shots, they would still be ranked last in ACC in free throw shooting. Jeez.

              3) Kentucky-- Will end SEC's stretch of not having team in Top 25. That Meeks kid scoring 54 at Tennessee, a memorable performance.

              2) Mountain West-- San Diego State, UNLV took hits on road this week. One of things that hurts this league is that except for Air Force all the lesser teams in league have tough home courts to visit.

              1) Billy Packer-- Did you think he was going to go away quietly? It will be curious to see him and Bob Knight sitting in a casino talking about the NCAA tournament. Imagine Knight playing poker with Mike Matusow in Vegas? That would make a good pay-per-view.

                Daily Sports Roundup

                Friday, January 16

The NBA takes over the sports spotlight on Friday, with the Spurs, Hornets, Cavaliers, Jazz, Magic, and Lakers in action. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup.

                The Gridiron Spotlight

An Arizona/Baltimore Super Bowl matchup opened at 50/1 odds to come to pass, but that line is now down to just 5/1 as we head into conference championship weekend. Still, that's the longshot of the group, with the Philadelphia/Pittsburgh matchup the favorite at 5/4 (it opened at 8/1). Next up is Arizona/Pittsburgh, which opened at 30/1 and now sits at 9/4. The Philadelphia/Baltimore matchup was pegged at 25/1 odds on the opening line, but it's at just 3/1 odds right now.

                Other Notable Events

The Hornets will try to be the first team to pick up a win in Cleveland this season when they take on the Cavaliers in NBA action on Friday night. LeBron James and company head into that marquee matchup with a 19-0 home record; every other team in the league has lost at least twice in their own building this season.

The other big battle on Friday has Orlando on the road against the Lakers. The Magic head into that game on a five-game winning streak and with a sizeable lead in the Southeast Division standings. Rounding out the Friday slate: New York at Washington, Toronto at Indiana, San Antonio at Philadelphia, Detroit at Oklahoma City, Utah at Memphis, Minnesota at Phoenix, and Milwaukee at Sacramento, while Golden State will get a tough home matchup against Atlanta.

                The Rest of the Schedule

There are a half-dozen games on the ice around the National Hockey League on Friday night, including New Jersey on the road in Columbus. The Devils are coming off a 5-3 road win in Vancouver, with Dainius Zubrus picking up a goal and an assist and Scott Clemmensen making 26 saves. The Blue Jackets slipped past Colorado 4-3 at home in their last outing, getting three points from Kristian Huselius. Rookie goalie Steve Mason stopped 23 of 26 shots in the win.

Three of New Jersey's Atlantic Division rivals are also in action on Friday, with Pittsburgh hosting Anaheim, Philadelphia in Florida, and the Rangers in Chicago. As well, Toronto will be on the road in Atlanta, and Colorado will host Edmonton.

                News from the Wire

Celtics center Kendrick Perkins is out with a shoulder injury; he isn't expected to suit up for the team this weekend . . . Raptors guard Jose Calderon continues to miss time with a hamstring injury, while center Jermaine O'Neal is still day-to-day with his lingering knee problem . . . Flyers center Daniel Briere has been sent on a minor-league conditioning assignment and should return to action next week.

                A Peek at the Future

Saturday is full of big NBA matchups, including Boston at New Jersey (at 1:00pm ET), New Orleans at Detroit, Miami at Houston, Utah at Dallas, and Orlando at Denver . . . No. 9 UCLA will host No. 16 Arizona State in a Pac-10 college hoops matchup on Saturday afternoon, while No. 1 Pittsburgh will be on the road in Louisville . . . the Red Wings will take on the Sharks in NHL action on Saturday.
