      Ice Picks: NHL Bets
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Montreal Canadiens at New York Rangers (-130, 5.5)

Both the Montreal Canadiens and the New York Rangers benefited from solid goaltending in their most recent contests.

Considering the teams' last few series meetings have been high-scoring affairs, it's likely each could use a solid performance in net on Wednesday night, when the Canadiens seek their third straight victory over the Rangers but their first in five visits to Madison Square Garden.

The teams are currently separated by one point in the Eastern Conference. The Rangers are battling with Philadelphia for the top spot in the Atlantic Division, while the Canadiens are second in the Northeast behind East-leading Boston.

Montreal enters having won four of its last five games. Backup Jaroslav Halak was pulled after allowing three goals on 22 shots in losing at New Jersey on Friday, but regrouped by stopping all three shootout attempts he faced in a 6-5 home victory over Florida on Sunday.

Halak had 30 saves in regulation and overtime, while Andrei Kostitsyn had two goals before Andrei Markov scored the lone tally in the tiebreaker for the Canadiens, who have collected points in seven of their last eight games (6-1-1).

In that span, Halak has won three of his four starts despite a 3.40 goals-against average. He's expected to make his third straight start with goalie Carey Price - one of four Canadiens voted by fans to start the All-Star Game in Montreal later this month - sidelined by an undisclosed lower-body injury.

Halak is 1-2-0 with a 3.35 GAA in four career starts against the Rangers. Both losses came at Madison Square Garden, where the Canadiens are 0-3-1 after winning six in a row from Oct. 11, 2002-Oct. 31, 2005.

New York has outscored Montreal 15-5 in those four victories, including a 4-1 win most recently on Jan. 12, 2008.

This season, the Rangers are 14-7-2 on home ice, and Henrik Lundqvist has started all but one of those 23 games, compiling a 2.38 GAA and a .915 save percentage.

      Pick: Rangers

Vancouver Canucks at Edmonton Oilers (-110, 5.5)

Center Mats Sundin is expected to make his Vancouver debut soon. It can't come soon enough for the slumping Canucks.

Sundin believes there's a "good chance" he'll make his highly-anticipated season debut Wednesday night, when the Canucks will be aiming to avoid a third consecutive defeat as they visit the Northwest Division rival Edmonton Oilers.

Despite not appearing in a game since March 9, the 37-year-old Sundin is optimistic he's ready. The nine-time All-Star is Toronto's all-time leading scorer with 987 points, and has a total of 555 goals and 766 assists in 17 NHL seasons - the first four spent with Quebec.

"If nothing changes until tomorrow morning I think it should be a good chance I'll play tomorrow," Sundin said Tuesday. "If not, then obviously Friday" at home against St. Louis.

Whenever Sundin does play, he'll try to re-energize a Vancouver squad that has dropped five of its last seven games and is 7-9-3 following a season-high four-game winning streak from Nov. 19-24. The Canucks have also dropped seven of their last 10 road games, and three of their last four visits to Rexall Place.

The Oilers also won their only previous home game in the season series, 3-0 on Dec. 13 behind Dwayne Roloson's only shutout of 2008-09. He made 23 saves in that contest, and 25 on Monday night in a 3-2 victory over the New York Islanders.

Edmonton's top scorer Ales Hemsky (35 points) has missed the last four games and remains day-to-day with a concussion.

Vancouver continues to play without injured goaltender and captain Roberto Luongo (strained groin), but Jason LaBarbera - acquired from Los Angeles in a Dec. 30 trade - has been a bright spot, compiling a 1.90 goals-against average and a .943 save percentage in three starts for his new team.

      Pick: Over

Pick 'n' Roll: Wednesday's best NBA bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Pistons at Portland Trail Blazers

Why did the Pistons trade Chauncey Billups?

It’s simple: they traded Billups because they had Rodney Stuckey.

Stuckey led Detroit to a perfect 4-0 week averaging 23 points, 5.3 assists, and 4.5 rebounds along the way. Since the former Eastern Washington standout was moved to the starting lineup, Detroit is 10-3 and has won seven straight.

“One thing about Stuckey is that when he sees an opportunity to attack, regardless of what the play call is, he attacks,” Pistons coach Michael Curry told reporters. “Those are the things we saw within him and that’s why he’s becoming a really, really good point guard. He’s picking and choosing when to be aggressive.”

Stuckey has been looking for his shot lately. He scored a career-high 40 points last month against the Chicago Bulls and followed up with 38 points Friday against the Sacramento Kings.

The Pistons should have both Richard Hamilton and Rasheed Wallace back in their lineup against the Blazers. Hamilton missed all four games last week and Wallace missed three, both due to nagging injuries.

The road team is 5-1 against the spread (ATS) in the last six tilts between the Pistons and Blazers.

        Pick: Pistons

Minnesota Timberwolves at Oklahoma City Thunder (-6.5, 202.5)

It’s not the most exciting matchup on Wednesday, but it is worth taking a look.

Minnesota, which is 2-0 in 2009, is 4-2 straight up (SU) in its last six overall and has already doubled its total number of wins through the first two months of the campaign. It is 6-1 ATS in its last seven overall.

The Thunder, meanwhile, haven’t been so lucky. They have lost eight of their last 10 and are just 1-16 on the road.

Thunder forwards Nick Collison and Joe Smith will be sidelined Wednesday with injuries. Expect Minnesota center Al Jefferson to take advantage and put up big numbers against Oklahoma City.

        Pick: Timberwolves

Davidson at #2 Duke [ESPN | 7 PM ET]

Davidson: The Wildcats will try to end a 66-game winning streak for Duke at home against non-conference opponents, something Stephen Curry is looking forward to in his second trip to Cameron Indoor Stadium. “They’re going to be into it. To go into that kind of atmosphere is something that prepares you for down the road,” said Curry, the nation's leading scorer with 29.2 points per game. “It’s just a special environment, so we’re going to enjoy it while we’re playing and have fun while we’re up there.” Davidson has one win in 31 previous trips to Cameron and trails the all-time series 17-86.

Davidson is 2-6 ATS in its last 8 Wednesday games.
The UNDER is 10-1 in Davidson's last 11 games vs. Southern Conference.

Key Injuries - G Stephen Curry (ankle) is probable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 66 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Duke (-13.5, O/U 153.5): The Blue Devils are coming off one of their best defensive performances in nearly 27 years after beating Virginia Tech 69-44 on Sunday. Duke held the Hokies to just 13 points in the second half on 6-of-18 shooting and held a 22-10 edge on the boards during that stretch. “We want to have that be our staple - we want to bring defense and rebounding to every game,” Blue Devils forward Kyle Singler said. “We know we can rebound the ball and play defense. If we do that, we’ll have a good enough chance to win as many games as we want to.”

Duke is 7-1 ATS in its last 8 games vs. Southern Conference.
The UNDER is 8-2 in Duke's last 10 games vs. Southern Conference.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 80
