    Trends and Indexes

    Wednesday, January 7

Good Luck on day #7 of 2009!

For College Football and the NFL, watch for separate threads:

    • “NCAAF Bowl Season Trends and Indexes 12/20 through 1/8”
    • “NFL Divisional Round Trends and Indexes 1/10 and 1/11"

For now, the balance of the sports menu in this thread will consist of the NBA, College Basketball, and the NHL until their seasons are played out. Also, general sports news and notes will still be posted here.

    NOTE:
As information becomes available, we will attempt to post the trends and indexes as soon as possible.
Information is posted from what we believe are reliable sources.
Any opinions expressed are not necessarily those of the posting member or BettorsChat.

    Daily Sports Roundup

    Wednesday, January 7

The Portland Trail Blazers will be looking to assert themselves in their game against the Detroit Pistons Wednesday night. Here's your Daily Sports Roundup.

    The Gridiron Spotlight

While the road teams got a lot of love from the oddsmakers in the first round of the NFL playoffs, the home teams are all pegged as the favorites in the second round this weekend. The biggest chalk right now are the Carolina Panthers, who are listed as 10-point home favorites versus the Cardinals in one NFC matchup.

The other NFC matchup sees the Giants giving up four points at home against the division-rival Eagles. Over in the AFC the story is generally the same, with the Steelers favored by 6 points at home against the Chargers, and the Titans favored by 3 points at home against the Ravens. That Baltimore/Tennessee game will kick off the weekend action; it's slated to begin at 4:30pm ET Saturday.

    Other Notable Events

Greg Oden and the Trail Blazers will be looking to end a two-game losing streak on Wednesday night when they play host to the Pistons. The Blazers are coming off back-to-back losses to the Hornets (92-77) and Lakers (100-86) and now sit at 20-14 straight-up and 16-18 against-the-spread on the season. Portland guard Brandon Roy is expected to be out of action for a week with his hamstring injury.

There are a dozen games in total on the NBA's schedule for Wednesday, including a high-powered Eastern Conference matchup between the Magic and Hawks in Atlanta. Rounding out the slate: Toronto at Washington, Charlotte at Cleveland, Houston at Boston, Memphis at New Jersey, Philadelphia at Milwaukee, Oklahoma City at Minnesota, Miami at Denver, Indiana at Phoenix, New Orleans at Utah, and finally the Lakers on the road against Golden State.

    The Rest of the Schedule

The North Carolina Tar Heels fell 85-78 to Boston College in their last outing, and as a result they dropped from No. 1 to No. 3 in the latest edition of the AP's college hoops Top 25. North Carolina will take on Charleston Wednesday, while new No. 2 Duke will host Davidson. Other ranked teams in action include No. 11 Syracuse vs. DePaul, No. 15 Tennessee vs. Gonzaga, No. 17 Boston College vs. Harvard, No. 18 Marquette vs. Rutgers, and No. 23 Louisville vs. South Florida.

Finally, there are just two games on the NHL's schedule for Wednesday, with Vancouver at Edmonton and Montreal at the Rangers. The Habs outgunned the Panthers 6-5 in their last contest, and they're hoping to get starting goaltender Carey Price back in the lineup soon; Price has been out with a lower-body injury.

    News from the Wire

The Rays dipped into baseball's free-agent waters by signing outfielder Pat Burrell to a two-year, $16 million contract on Monday . . . Lakers forward Luke Walton is expected to be out for two weeks with a foot injury . . . Ducks forward Corey Perry is serving a four-game suspension and can return on Sunday night.

    A Peek at the Future

Thursday's NBA doubleheader sees New York visiting Dallas and San Antonio hosting the Clippers . . . a busy Thursday around the NHL includes Minnesota at Philadelphia, Toronto at Montreal, Dallas at Detroit, Chicago at Colorado, and Anaheim at Los Angeles . . . Florida opened as a 1.5-point favorite for Thursday night's BCS Championship against Oklahoma, but that line is now up to 3.5 or 4 points at most books, with a total of 70.5. Kickoff for that game is set for 8pm ET.

      Six-pack for Wednesday

Some NBA knowledge with the season almost half over........

-- Dwyane Wade has taken 714 shots, 64 more than anyone else, so not surprising that he leads NBA in scoring at 28.7 ppg. Lebron James is second at 27.5, then Kobe Bryant at 26.8.

-- Atlanta's Joe Johnson is leading NBA in minutes per game (40.1) followed by the Knicks' Chris Duhon (39.8). Oddly, Allen Iverson and Stephen Jackson, #'s 3-4 in minutes played, have both been traded during the season.

-- Chris Paul makes a strong case as one of five best players in the league, leading NBA in assists (11.5/game), steals (2.87/game).

-- Toronto's Jose Calderon leads NBA in assists/turnover ratio with a 4.03 mark; Paul is second in this category (3.83).

-- Dwight Howard leads NBA, grabbing 13.6 rebounds a game, with Marcus Camby (13.5) and Andris Biedrins (12.1) next in line.

-- Rashard Lewis has taken most 3's, making 41% of his 249 tries, but Jason Richardson has made highest percentage (47-97, 48.5%).

Wednesday's List of 13: Odds and ends on a winter Wednesday

Wednesday's List of 13: Odds and ends on a winter Wednesday

        13) Giants' defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo made more cash this season than Eric Mangini did as head coach of the Jets.

        12) Have the Jets fired their team doctors yet? How was Brett Favre playing with a torn tendon in his bicep? Did they know he had the injury, and if so, why was he allowed to play? I mean, the coach got fired because the QB didn't play well, but the QB was hurt, so you can make a case that Mangini got fired because Favre played hurt.

        11) Sacks became an official stat in 1982; the Chiefs had only 10 as a team this season, the least by any team since 1982. Lions picked off only four passes this year, the least by any team in a full season.

        10) Celtics lost five of last seven games since their 19-game winning streak ended Christmas Day- they lost in Charlotte last night.

        9) NFL teams spend so much money on scouting, but Steelers cut James Harrison three times before he stuck with the team, and how he is one of the best players in the league. Same with the Patriots and Tom Brady, who was drafted in the sixth round, after all.

        8) Conference play is starting to rev up in college hoops; Seton Hall took Villanova to OT last night, before losing by four.

        7) Arkansas upset Texas at home, its 7th straight home win against a Top 25 team. Pelphrey is working wonders with the young Hogs.

        6) Indians got sucked into signing Carl Pavano to an incentive-laden contract; he is guaranteed $1.5M in '09, with a possible $5.3M he can earn in incentives. Pavano started 26 games the last four years since he was 18-8 for the Marlins in 2004. Good luck with him.

        5) Earth to Oakland: Jason Giambi turns 38 on Thursday.

        4) I'm neutral on the NFL's overtime debate; the current system isn't unfair; after all, if you stop the other team, then you get the ball, but the college system is kind of fun, too. It wouldn't be horrible if they guaranteed each team one possession on offense.

        3) FBI has apparently lost lot of people to attrition, so they posted around 3,000 job openings, 850 for agents, 2,100+ support people. Good opportunity for someone to get in with the federal government.

        2) Tulsa crushed a disappointed Ball State in the GMAC Bowl, with much of the second half played in a monsoon. Second year in a row the Golden Hurricane won big in Mobile.

        1) If Oklahoma beats Florida Thursday, how does Texas not get some votes as national champion? Sooners, Longhorns would both have a single loss, and Texas beat Oklahoma in their head-to-head meeting. It would seem ridiculous to keep Texas completely out of the picture.

Miami Heat at Denver Nuggets [ESPN | 9 PM ET]

Heat: Miami begins a seven-game road trip in Denver and hopes to break a six-game series losing streak against the Nuggets. Dwayne Wade certainly can't be blamed for that skid, as he is averaging 27.6 points per game in nine career meetings with Denver. Wade leads the NBA in scoring at 28.7 points per game and has not gotten much help in the Heat's last three losses. He is averaging nearly 29 points in those games as well, accounting for almost 35 percent of the team's total offense.

Heat are 0-3 ATS in their last 3 games overall.
The OVER is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings.

                Key Injuries - NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: 95

Nuggets (-5, O/U 200): Denver will be without star forward Carmelo Anthony for at least three weeks with a broken bone in his shooting hand, putting a damper on the team's best start in over 30 years. The Nuggets sit atop the Northwest Division with a 24-12 mark thanks in part to the acquisition of point guard Chauncey Billups, and fortunately Anthony will not require surgery. “Hopefully the healing process will be a lot quicker,” said Anthony. “It hurts,” Billups said. “That’s our best player, that’s our No. 1 option.”

Nuggets are 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings.
The OVER is 10-3 in Denver's last 13 home games.

Key Injuries - F Carmelo Anthony (hand) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 105 (Side Play of the Day)

Detroit Pistons at Portland Trail Blazers

Why did the Pistons trade Chauncey Billups?

It’s simple: they traded Billups because they had Rodney Stuckey.

Stuckey led Detroit to a perfect 4-0 week averaging 23 points, 5.3 assists, and 4.5 rebounds along the way. Since the former Eastern Washington standout was moved to the starting lineup, Detroit is 10-3 and has won seven straight.

“One thing about Stuckey is that when he sees an opportunity to attack, regardless of what the play call is, he attacks,” Pistons coach Michael Curry told reporters. “Those are the things we saw within him and that’s why he’s becoming a really, really good point guard. He’s picking and choosing when to be aggressive.”

Stuckey has been looking for his shot lately. He scored a career-high 40 points last month against the Chicago Bulls and followed up with 38 points Friday against the Sacramento Kings.

The Pistons should have both Richard Hamilton and Rasheed Wallace back in their lineup against the Blazers. Hamilton missed all four games last week and Wallace missed three, both due to nagging injuries.

The road team is 5-1 against the spread (ATS) in the last six tilts between the Pistons and Blazers.

                  Pick: Pistons

Things are upside down in Missouri Valley, as perennial contenders now seem to be rebuilding; Missouri State won seven of last nine games with Evansville, losing here LY for first time in last five visits. Faves are 6-2 vs spread in last eight series games. Aces were down 10 at half Sunday, but rallied to win by six at Indiana State- they're 2-1 in Valley so far.

Wisconsin won six of last seven vs Northwestern, last four by average of 12 points; Wildcats lost three of last four visits here, with losses by 15- 17-12 points- they're 0-2 in Big 11, losing home games by 4-11 points, despite leading both games at half. Badgers won first two Big 11 games, giving up 61 points in both, winning by 12-4 points.

Gonzaga beat Tennessee 83-74 in Orlando in November, making 11-20 from arc, shooting 52% from floor, but Zags lost four of last five games overall, losing by 5-5-1-7 points- only the 66-65 loss at Utah was true road game. Vols are 4-3 in last seven games, losing 92-85 at Kansas on Saturday- they open SEC play at Georgia this Saturday.

Duke beat Va Tech by 25 in ACC opener Sunday, visit Florida State in next game Saturday- they covered six of last seven tries as favorite, now host Davidson squad that misses PG Richards from LY's team, and was down 21-0 in game at Purdue last month, losing 76-58 (their other loss was 82-78 at Oklahoma). ACC home favorites are 22-20 vs spread.

Charleston has beaten TCU, South Carolina, lost to Temple by four and Davidson by five, but they're catching North Carolina off shocking home loss to Boston College Sunday- Heels shot 38% from floor, 15-27 from line, 7-22 from arc. Probably a bad time to be visiting Chapel Hill. Road dogs from Southern Conference are 13-22 against the spread.

Davidson: The Wildcats will try to end a 66-game winning streak for Duke at home against non-conference opponents, something Stephen Curry is looking forward to in his second trip to Cameron Indoor Stadium. “They’re going to be into it. To go into that kind of atmosphere is something that prepares you for down the road,” said Curry, the nation's leading scorer with 29.2 points per game. “It’s just a special environment, so we’re going to enjoy it while we’re playing and have fun while we’re up there.” Davidson has one win in 31 previous trips to Cameron and trails the all-time series 17-86.

Davidson is 2-6 ATS in its last 8 Wednesday games.

Duke (-13.5): The Blue Devils are coming off one of their best defensive performances in nearly 27 years after beating Virginia Tech 69-44 on Sunday. Duke held the Hokies to just 13 points in the second half on 6-of-18 shooting and held a 22-10 edge on the boards during that stretch. “We want to have that be our staple - we want to bring defense and rebounding to every game,” Blue Devils forward Kyle Singler said. “We know we can rebound the ball and play defense. If we do that, we’ll have a good enough chance to win as many games as we want to.”

Duke is 7-1 ATS in its last 8 games vs. Southern Conference.
The UNDER is 8-2 in Duke's last 10 games vs. Southern Conference.
