Ottawa Senators at Buffalo Sabres (-201, 5.5)
Just two weeks after predicting the Senators would have a miracle turnaround, owner Eugene Melnyk looks like he may finally be ready to face reality. Rumours are swirling that Melnyk is looking to replace current head coach Craig Hartsburg with Junior Team Canada head coach Pat Quinn.
The Sens are 12 points away from making the playoffs and at 13-18-3-3 hold the worst record in the Northeast division. Their underachieving offence has only managed to score 2.32 goals per game, ranking them last in the league.
The lack of productivity is inexcusable with talented scorers like Daniel Alfredsson, Dany Heatley and Jason Spezza all healthy and in the lineup.
“It’s a tough situation,” Alfredsson told reporters when asked about talk involving Hartsburg’s dismissal. “Expectations are high on us. We should be higher in the standings.
“But if we were waiting for something to happen (like a new coach or GM), it’s a mistake. That’s not the issue. It’s us. It’s the players.”
The Sens have lost five of their last six and will be playing their seventh straight road game.
Pick: Buffalo
San Jose Sharks at Calgary Flames (+125, 5.5)
The Flames left the Windy City frustrated after Sunday night’s 5-2 loss to the Blackhawks. Prior to the loss, the Flames were riding a five-game winning streak
Calgary will no doubt be looking to redeem itself tonight against the Sharks. Jarome Iginla and Michael Cammalleri, who combined for a total of 10 points in their New Year’s Eve victory against the Oilers, had a minus-4 rating in Sunday’s defeat.
The Sharks haven’t looked as sharp in recent games. They lost two of their last four games and although they came away with a win against the Islanders on Saturday night, they let the team with the fewest points in the league score two late goals to make it a one-point game.
